Frank Murphy is on the podcast porch while it is snowing in Knoxville for the first time in 385 days. Frank has always disliked snow but now finds it more bearable because he can work from home instead of driving in it.  Frank's big break in radio came when newscaster David Haines asked Frank to read the snow closing announcements on WAVA during the morning show. Frank wonders why most winter songs like “Winter Wonderland” and “A Marshmallow World” get lumped in with Christmas songs and get virtually no airplay after Christmas Day.  Some of the students from Science Hill High School commented on Frank's ties during an episode of Tennessee Scholars' Bowl. Before each episode, Frank takes a “selfie for the wardrobe department.” Frank's wife Jere is the “wardrobe department.” Tennessee Scholars' Bowl airs weekdays at 5:30 p.m. on East Tennessee PBS.  Frank and Jere went to dinner with Jere's sister and her husband at Ristorante DellaSantina in Sevierville. He saw local actor Mitch Moore at the restaurant and invited him to be on the podcast. Frank enjoyed a s'mores old fashioned before his pasta dinner.  Frank and Jere traveled to Northern Virginia to see family members. Frank and his sisters visited his daughter Meaghan's art studio to see some of the paintings and prints she has for sale. See Meaghan's artwork at https://instagram.com/mdecelleart/  One of the other artist's in the same studio complex as Meaghan is a surrealist who includes a lot of skulls in his work. Frank asked if he knew of the Body Farm. The artist said yes and that he would like to walk off into the snow when it's time for him to die.  This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Buy books and other merchandise autographed by Body Farm founder Dr. Bill Bass at https://bonezones.com/ including Body Farm t-shirts. Contact BoneZones to hire Frank to give a presentation about Dr. Bass and the Body Farm.  Frank had the idea to pour bacon grease onto a tree stump in the hope that birds and chipmunks would gnaw on the stump to use it like a suet feeder. Frank has twice forgotten to retrieve the frying pan from the stump. He also buries coffee grounds and eggshells in various spots around the yard.  When Frank and Jere went to a coffee shop on Sunday, the barista accidentally shut down the register after taking Jere's order but before taking Frank's order. The barista was able to make Frank's latte by the time the register restarted.  Frank and Jere ordered tuna salad sandwiches at a restaurant known for its bread. Frank was surprised that a full order consisted of two sandwiches. He and Jere both asked for no onions. Jere's sandwich had onions but no tuna.  A technician from the HVAC company told Frank to reorder box-style filters. He also told Frank that he recommends box filters for all his elderly customers. Frank resisted the temptation to correct the spelling and grammar on the report from a plumber who fixed a pipe under the sink.  Support the Frank & Friends Show by purchasing some of our high-quality merchandise at https://frank-friends-show.creator-spring.com  Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep. A Davenant Hall Fellows Lecture with Q&A offered by Prof. Ryan Hurd with a response by Dr. David Haines. In recent years, there has been a welcome resurgence of interest in Thomas Aquinas among Protestants. Many have recovered his masterwork, the Summa Theologiae, as a go-to resource for dogmatic questions. Even where they disagree with it, it has once more become an indispensable tool for doing theology. However, when reading the Summa, students can quickly max out the resources helpful for introductory learners. Careful reading on their own often hits a wall which can be difficult to climb. Students may feel they have a basic grasp of some of Aquinas's big ideas and way of working, but sense that there is much more to be unlocked. In this lecture, Ryan Hurd gives some more advanced tips for reading the Summa and understanding the greater logic of Aquinas's thought. Anyone desiring to go to “the next level” in understanding Aquinas will benefit. David Haines then offers a response to Ryan's lecture, before an open discussion and Q&A time.

The Wisconsin Broadcasters Association is proud to present a very special "Bob Barry's Unearthed Interviews - podcast #200".                        #200!!!                                                     The WBA wondered how this came about. Bob says "It was suggested we do something special for the 200th podcast, so we are flashing “way back” to 1972, to me and my morning show on WOKY. As far as we know, this is the first time anyone has heard my morning radio show in 51 years. Can you believe it?  That goes for my newsman David Haines and his colorful high-energy delivery too."                         Bob's morning show on WOKY was usually #1 in the ratings.  This meant Bob could spend company money on long distance phone calls. And he did. In 1972, long distance calls cost dollars per minute. The Milwaukee Journal reported monthly phone bills at WOKY were over $1000. Adjusted for inflation, that's $7300 a month!  Bob spent WOKY's money wisely, making his show so popular he was voted #1 DJ in the USA in 1975 by Billboard magazine, beating out DJ's from New York and LA.                                            Bob says "That was quite an honor and thank you to everyone who listened to me back in the day."                                 Several people helped put this "200th special" together.  Thank you's to WOKY alum Jack Lee who brought back Milwaukee's very own “Lady of Charm”, to radio vet and voice talent Bill Shannon for playing the role of "Mr. Announcer", and to marketing guru Kipper McGee for handling promotion. Continuing thanks to Kyle Geissler, Vice President of the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association for coordinating and getting these podcasts to you on Youtube, Spotify, Apple, etc. And special thanks to Mark David (MD) Heleniak of MixMasterMD.com for restoring the 1972 WOKY aircheck, and for producing, writing, and engineering the 200th special podcast.                                          If you enjoy this special, let us know.  email:  bbarryunearthed@gmail.com   We'll do more in the future.                                           And thanks for listening!

Do we need deep scientific knowledge in order to make arguments for the existence of God? Or can we demonstrate a general, objective, rational case for God's existence using common observations found in our everyday life? Philosopher and theologian Thomas Aquinas introduced the world to his "Five Ways" for the existence of God back in the 13th century, and they are still being discussed and debated today. There are some similarities between Aquinas' Five Ways and many other common arguments for the existence of God (Kalam cosmological, moral, teleological, etc.) but there are also some important distinctions to keep in mind. In this midweek podcast episode, Frank sits down with Dr. David Haines, assistant professor of theology and philosophy at Bethlehem College and Seminary, to discuss two of the five arguments Aquinas used to prove the existence of God. David is active in research related to ancient and medieval philosophy, early Reformed theology, C.S. Lewis, Thomism, natural law, and natural theology. He has given conference presentations and published a number of articles and books in these areas, including Natural Theology and Natural Law. As Frank and David introduce the audience to two of these Five Ways of Aquinas, you will see that their (relative) simplicity can be deceiving, and their nuances will continue to spark discussion for many more centuries to come! Tyson's book contains an intellectual history of theology's engagement with science during the modern period, critiques current approaches, and makes a constructive proposal for how a Christian theological vision of natural knowledge can be better pursued. His work was recently showcased at the British Museum, in London and in the past has been shown in Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Estonia, Istanbul, HongKong, and New York. David believes that drawing and painting are media that liberate the image from the dehumanized abstraction of its digital reproducibility, that there are deeply psychological reasons why we return time and again to singular images in our digitally saturated society, and that it is the handmade image, in all its materiality, that offers us the closeness we desire. He values what he refers to as, the index, the mark we may, if we wish, leave behind, that is to say, our trace, those footprints on the beach, that smoke that signified our fire, the cave paintings, through the whole history of art, the singular experience and pulse of people leaving their trace behind though they are no longer there. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/cutting-for-sign/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/cutting-for-sign/support

David Haines graduated with Part-time Data Science Cohort 2. I've been working in the healthcare space in a variety of 'data-adjacent' roles for a number of years and came to NSS to dig deep into code, predictive analytics and machine learning. I'm interested in things I haven't tried before. I think there's interesting work to be done in the marketing and media spaces but I think any industry can benefit from advanced analytics and data science. I love working with curious people who get excited by solving problems. and have fun overcoming challenges.

This week, Stephanie's top executive guests hail from the worlds of mobile energy, sanitary fittings and business services. They discuss how businesses cope in a "slow growth" environment. Stephanie is joined in the studio by Rupert Soames, chief executive of mobile energy group, Aggreko; Neal Gandhi, chief executive of international business services company Quickstart Global; David Haines, chief executive of German bathroom fittings company Grohe.
