Attack of the Brit Pick! This week, the boys go back to the original format of the show and talk about their favourite old British director Mike Leigh and his newest film... Hard Truths. After a brief dissection of Leigh's filmography, the guys discuss Marianne Jean-Baptiste taking a character with insufferable traits and making them incredibly sympathetic through sheer acting talent alone, the tragicomic family dynamic, the late Dick Pope's cinematography and much more. Hard Truths is a 2024 comedy-drama film written and directed by Mike Leigh, starring Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Michele Austin, and David Webber. Set in London, its plot follows the plight of a depressed and nay-saying woman (Jean-Baptiste) and the relationship with her jovial sister Chantelle (Austin). The film premiered at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival on 6 September 2024, and was met with widespread critical acclaim for its screenplay, direction and Jean-Baptiste's performance. It was released theatrically in the United States on 6 December 2024, by Bleecker Street, and in the United Kingdom on 31 January 2025, and will be released in Spain on 28 February 2025. It was named one of the top 10 independent films of 2024 by the National Board of Review. Meanwhile, for her performance, Jean-Baptiste received Best Actress nominations at the Critics' Choice Awards, BAFTA Film Awards, and the Gotham Awards, and swept the Best Actress trifecta at the NYFCC, LAFCA, and NSFC, becoming the first woman of colour to do so.
Our latest guest on Soundtracking is composer Gary Yershon, who joins us to reflect up 3 decades of collaborations with Mike Leigh, and more specifically Mike's latest movie, Hard Truths. Starring Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Michele Austin, and David Webber, the plot follows the plight of a depressed and nay-saying woman and the relationship with her jovial sister Chantelle. Gary is absolutely fascinating on Mike's process when it comes to both filmmaking and music - so this is well worth a listen.
Mike Leigh is one of our favorite filmmakers, and he's back with a new movie! Marianne Jean-Baptiste gives a stellar performance as Pansy in Hard Truths, about a woman who is depressed and bitter, and how she affects those around her.
With a city in flames, four individuals come together to confront Hard Truths. For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Ema Sasic, Dan Bayer, Nadia Dalimonte & Sara Clements to review and discuss the latest film from Mike Leigh, "Hard Truths," starring Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Michele Austin, David Webber, Tuwaine Barrett, Ani Nelson, Sophia Brown & Jonathan Livingstone. The film had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received enthusiastic reviews for Marianne Jean-Baptiste's brilliant performance and Leigh's writing and direction. The film has won numerous prizes for both of them and has received several nominations as well. What did we think of the story, the performances, the balance of comedy and drama from Leigh, and the film's ambiguous ending? Please tune in as we discuss these topics, its awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! In this week's episode of the world's-fastest-movie-review podcast Jackson and Mike review TWO new films!!! First “WALLACE & GROMIT: VENGEANCE MOST FOWL”. Pansy, angry and depressed, lashes out at family and strangers. Her constant criticism isolates her, except for her cheerful sister Chantal, who remains sympathetic despite their differences. Starring Ben Whitehead, Peter Kay, Lauren Patel. Then a quick review of “HARD TRUTHS”. Top dog Gromit springs into action to save his master when Wallace's high-tech invention goes rogue and he's framed for a series of suspicious crimes. Starring Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Michele Austin, Tuwaine Barrett and David Webber.
A new film from Mike Leigh is always a cause for celebration. Starting with his first feature Bleak Moments in 1971, Leigh has carved out a singular place in British and global cinema for his beautifully sensitive and detailed portraits of the lives of his largely working-class characters. His latest, Hard Truths, arrives six years after his previous release, the 2018 historical drama Peterloo. The new film reunites Leigh with the great actress Marianne Jean-Baptiste, with whom he worked on the Oscar-nominated Secrets & Lies in 1996. In Hard Truths, Jean-Baptiste plays Pansy, a middle-aged Londoner teetering on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Perpetually unhappy, she spends her days spewing vitriol at everyone she encounters—especially her resigned husband (David Webber) and depressed adult son (Tuwaine Barrett). Only after she is confronted by her sister, played by Leigh veteran Michelle Austin, does she begin to confront the roots of her inexplicable anger. On today's Podcast, Film Comment Editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute sat down with Leigh to dig into his process—everything from casting actors and choosing locations to working with music composers and choosing the film's title. A true actor's filmmaker, Leigh works closely with his cast over months to develop characters and their backstories. What we see on screen is only, as Leigh remarked, “the tip of the iceberg.”

Is your local club ground half empty because everyone is watching the Premier League on TV? Or perhaps you are a local Liverpool FC fan, but cannot ever get a ticket? Dr David Webber has been examining these struggles, dedicating much of his academic career to working out why it is happening and what we can do about it.David postulates that football has become so commercialised that most of us are unable to imagine an alternative that would curb profit-seeking behaviour and restore some social value back into the game. Such an idea would mean the sports industry is not immune from the cautions of Mark Fisher and the concept of ‘Capitalist Realism', work that David draws upon.In this episode, we discuss the forces that currently see sports teams leveraged to the nth degree for their commercial brand value. We also talk about how this process erodes the social connections and authenticity of the communities.Fortunately, David does not believe that all is lost. We discuss some more fundamental and drastic solutions that would bring back some community value and make football more democratic and even more competitive. You can find David via Solent University profile or via his Twitter: @DrDaveWebberThe researcher of 'competitive balance' who I referenced in the episode is Vasileios Manasis, Postdoctoral Researcher at Athens University of Economics and Business. She later became the first director of ESG research at that firm. 9:27 In 2011, she joined Chevron as a corporate governance analyst and ESG advisor. Who's making decisions, and what are the incentives to help drive behaviors to reach the strategic goals and to build (and sustain) value. That's all G." "If you get G right, all else should fall into place." "We want engaged directors: a high quality, competent and diverse board." "That's table stakes for me at this point."21:31 On the Engine No.1-Exxon Mobil case and the advent of ESG activism. "My advice to boards on how to think about ESG activism is to read the room." "90% of the SP500 is intangibles, so how you steward ESG issues matters (human capital driving these outcomes matters)." 26:39 On the evolution of proxy voting, especially with the rise of index investing and proxy advisors.29:06 Rating ESG of Silicon Valley tech companies. "I'm going to give them an E." "You have to do a materiality assessment (that's ground zero for a good ESG program)." "Don't grow so fast that you don't see the damage you're doing to yourself." "Growth at all cost is a bad strategy for sustained growth."34:49 On the criticisms and politicization of ESG: "It's sad that ESG is being politicized." On Tesla getting booted out of the S&P500 ESG index: "the methodology is public."38:40 On the 2019 BRT restatement of the purpose of the corporation. "I reference it all the time." "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good, especially when it comes to starting a company's ESG journey. Just try, just get started."48:03 - An unusual habit or an absurd thing that she loves: Aquatic snails!51:10 - The living person she most admires: the people in her stewardship team right now.Marian Macindoe is the new Head of ESG Stewardship at Parnassus, an investment firm based in SF with over $45 billion in assets under management.
