This episode is a bit different than what you might be used to hearing. It's a conversation about how secure your team's passwords are and the risks associated with the sensitive employee and client information that used to live at the office, but has now become accessible from your employees' homes. When the pandemic hit, most of us tried to figure out how to be able to work from home within a matter of days. Having the tech set up and being able to access work files and tools was way more important than data security... unless, of course, security is your jam ;-) Well, that whole situation resulted in a 500% increase in cybercrime! Since risk awareness and prevention is a key responsibility of a manager, I'm confident that you'll find this conversation with Denis O'Shea, the founder of Mobile Mentor, insightful. Denis' company has just published the results of a study to understand the hybrid workforce, specifically remote workers coming out of the pandemic. Some of the findings were very surprising, and he shares them in this episode of The Manager Track podcast! You'll learn some practical tips to help you avoid (or at least be prepared for) the nightmare of a cyber attack or data breach. If you found this episode insightful, please do share it with the leadership in your organization's tech/ security department. — RESOURCES MENTIONED — Connect with Denis on Linkedin Read whitepapers published by Mobile Mentor to help improve your security knowledge! Hackers are finding more creative ways to hold your data hostage every day. To keep them at bay and protect your business, every team member needs to be in the know about your security plan. Denis O'Shea, founder of Mobile Mentor, sheds light on what dramatic changes in business tech could mean for you. Once central to security, passwords are phasing out in favor of multi-factor authentication and biometrics. As our tools and technology evolve, so do workers' perceptions of data protection. Years of data show that personal privacy is one of the biggest concerns of many Gen Z workers. Meanwhile, company security is out of sight and out of mind for this generation. To get your entire team on board with security measures, it will take a new approach. Listen in to the ideas that Denis recommends. Data security is something we take for granted. We don't often think about the consequences, until one of our devices or data servers gets hacked.I'm talking about password protection. It's a subject most of us overlook - me too! - until its too late. And it's not only personal data, companies face dire situations when a hacker gets into their records and holds them for ransom.Today I'm speaking with Denis O'Shea, a technology expert and founder of Mobile Mentor, an endpoint ecosystem helping companies create the right balance between good security and employee experience. Mobile Mentor was named Microsoft's 2021 Global Partner of the year for modern endpoint management. In this podcast Denis talks about- Why we need to ditch our passwords- What's driving the surge in security breaches and ransomware attacks- How to secure remote workers who are using their personal devices for company businessUSEFUL LINKS:Connect with Denis O'Shea: https://www.linkedin.com/in/denisosheamobilementor/Learn more about Mobile Mentor: http://www.mobile-mentor.comMobile Mentor's Research: https://endpointecosystem.com/Learn more about the Current Situation in Sourcing: https://thecurrentsituation.netA Seat at The Table website: https://seat.fm
On today's show, we discuss how to appropriately balance your company's cyber security with your employee experience. Denis O'Shea founded Mobile Mentor in New Zealand in 2004. Since then, the company has helped millions of people unlock the full potential of their technology. In 2017, O'Shea moved to Nashville, Tennessee to launch the company's US business, with a focus on securing the mobile workforce in industries such as healthcare, education, finance and government services. Mobile Mentor is a global leader in the endpoint ecosystem, helping clients to navigate the right balance between security and employee experience. The company was named Microsoft's 2021 Global Partner of the year for Modern Endpoint Management primarily for their work helping Alive Hospice safely treat patients during COVID 19. In addition to being a top Microsoft partner, they are also certified by Apple and Google. Mobile Mentor has recently worked with Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Michigan Medicine, Mayo Clinic and the US Coast Guard. Key Takeaways:How has the pandemic shifted the way employees work and shifted the balance between employer and employee?Increase in employees working from homeIncrease in cybercrime with cyber criminals going after healthcare, government, schools, etc.Global chip shortage which brought about the "bring your own laptops" policiesHiring and onboarding done remotelyThe Great ResignationWhat is the biggest risk of employees using personal devices?Password hygiene. - Employees are typically reckless with passwords, writing them in a notebook or in a note on their phone. We have too many passwords, and we are managing them badly. What is the solution to rampant bad password hygiene?Be password-less. Do away with passwords, and instead use:Biometrics Single sign-onMulti-factorHow can we combat a lack of balance leaning toward companies being too strict with conditional access policies? Allow exceptions by request, when traveling for example.Allow trusted devices already approved.Remote workers and Generation Z employees both bring about a "Shadow IT" - employees using their own devices and apps/tools. How can we combat a lack of balance leaning toward employees being too lax with cyber security?Involve these groups in the decision-making process when choosing collaboration tools. They will pressure-test them and point out weaknesses.Use technology tools to detect what apps/tools are being used.Re-frame "company security" to "privacy". Younger employees care about personal privacy, and are better able to relate that to customer privacy and ultimately company privacy. What do you see being different in 5 years?Quick and efficient onboarding. This will go from a 3-day painful process to a scenario where the employee will be the first to touch the device. They'll have a one-time access code and the device will self-configure, giving access to everything needed, set up properly. Rather than a 3-day process, they will be up and running within an hour.No Passwords. Biometrics used instead.More personal devices, rather than company-provided devices. How do we combat security breaches?Give only the minimum amount of access to do the job. Use time-restricted access when more access is needed temporarily. Create dynamic groups as the privilege set, rather than users. Add users to the group, and remove as needed.Connect with Denis O'Shea:Research data - https://endpointecosystem.comCompany website -

The rise of remote work has changed businesses in many ways. One of the most notable consequences has been its effect on the way employees behave and work. Not only is the line between work and home life becoming increasingly blurred, but the distinction between our work and personal devices has also become less clear than ever. While it may seem simpler and cheaper to allow your employees to work on their own devices, the truth is that the laxness around regulated devices and passwords is creating a huge security risk at a time when the threat of cybercrime attacks, like hacking and ransomware, has never been higher. Here to help us tackle this important topic is Denis O'Shea, Founder of Mobile Mentor, a company that provides its clients with invisible securities that aren't disruptive to their employees' workflow. In our conversation, Denis describes the challenge that companies currently face in attempting to create a robust security system, while also ensuring a seamless employee experience, and what can be done about it. We also discuss their surprise win of the prestigious Microsoft Partner of the Year award, how it was all thanks to several innovative shifts they'd instituted over the past two years, and what they're doing to make sure they win again next year. To learn more about security in 2022 and how to leverage the power of an award to scale effectively, make sure you tune in today!
