After a whole weekend of great conversations, we finally got the man behind the madness behind the mic. Mike helped bring everyone — including us — together at The Lively Grit Daily House for SXSW 2025. We chatted about dealing with stress, putting on live events, why ‘Zoom Fatigue' is bullshit, faking football knowledge, bowl cuts, Linkin Park, the difference between a fad, a trend, and a culture, and a lot more in between. “There will be one person walking down the side of the street and you'll be like, ‘they're cool.' And then there'll be somebody else probably making a noise or walking stupidly or wearing something absolutely disgusting, trying to be cool. And you'll cross the road to avoid them.”Connect with Mike on LinkedIn. Special thanks to Lively and Audience 101 for hosting us at SXSW, and YouGov for running the survey that supported our series of conversations.howcoolisthis.show
In this episode, Andrew Brodsky, author of Ping: The Secrets of Successful Virtual Communication, explores how virtual communication can be improved for both productivity and relationship-building. Andrew, a professor at the University of Texas and expert on virtual communication, discusses his research and personal journey in understanding how we interact online. In this conversation, we dive into: • The Importance of Virtual Communication: Andrew shares how his personal experiences, including battling leukemia, sparked his interest in virtual communication, leading him to research and write about it. • The PING Framework: We break down the PING acronym—Perspective Taking, Initiative, Nonverbal Cues, and Goals—and how each element helps improve virtual interactions. • Synchronous vs. Asynchronous Communication: Understanding the differences between real-time and delayed communication and how each affects our interactions. • Dealing with Zoom Fatigue and Camera Etiquette: Andrew offers advice on when to turn your camera on or off during video calls, balancing engagement and avoiding burnout. • Perspective Taking and Miscommunication: Why it's crucial to be mindful of how others interpret virtual communication, from tone to response time. • Strategic Use of AI: While AI can be helpful, Andrew cautions against over-relying on it for personal interactions and suggests ways to use it effectively for low-stakes communication. Key and Peele - Texting Confusion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TF5FWbl1NVk Andrew provides a thoughtful approach to navigating virtual spaces, ensuring we don't just communicate more efficiently but also build meaningful connections, whether with colleagues, clients, or friends. Dr. Jennie Byrne is a trained physician, psychiatrist, and neuroscientist who published "Work Smart: Use Your Brain & Behavior to Master the Future of Work" which is about the workplace and how we can use an understanding of our brains and behavior to make it better now. Dr. Jennie's research came about during the pandemic as we were trying to figure things out. The technical term for zoom fatigue is video conferencing fatigue and it's a real phenomenon. The research shows that our brain is basically in a high state of alert and that our brain resources are being drained to try to navigate a highly unnatural environment. In this episode we also talk about the importance of taking care of ourselves so that we don't experience empathy fatigue. And at the end, we have some fun talking about how emojis turn on our brains the same way facial expressions do.
