In this episode Michelle talks about being reborn after having her confidence stripped,  being humiliated and losing herself all at the cost of trying to fulfil her dream career.  We discuss how even strong women can fall victim to the misogyny of the music industry and the moment she reclaimed her power!   “The misogynistic, the uncaring, revolting behaviour and words that were spoken to us for those two years, I, honest to God was broken. I was not myself. I couldn't sleep outside of panic attacks, literally spiralled into this depression.   I came home, like the most amazing thing I did was performed like 20,000 people in Trafalgar Square with the girls. And we had the best time, and we all said, like we had to call it. Everyone was like, it was getting to the point where it was ridiculous. I was such a positive, loving person all in my life, got to a stage where I couldn't even sleep, I couldn't talk, I couldn't laugh. I was just numb to the world. ”   ABOUT THE GUEST - MICHELLE GRIMES   Irish Pop singer and multi-instrumentalist Michelle Grimes arrived on the scene with a voice, panache and Pop / R'n'B sensibility that instantly set her apart from her musical peers. No stranger to the stage, Michelle has performed in Trafalgar Square to over 20,000 spectators as part of ‘Pride in London', has sung for the King and Queen of Belgium as well as singing for The Taoiseach and the U.S Presidential party in June last year when they visited Ireland.    Hailing from Limerick, Grimes has emerged as one of the country's most promising pop acts of recent memory. After the release of her first single ‘Going, Going, Gone', Hotpress nominated Grimes alongside the likes of Dermot Kennedy and Denise Chaila for Irish artist of the year and one to watch. Michelle's debut single wowed Irish radio and she went straight onto playlists across the country from Fm104, Live95, LMFM, Corks 96 and C103 as their Select Irish Artist of the Month as well as gracing the airwaves across BBC (Track of the week), 2FM, Spin and many more. Michelle smashed it at the overall International Radio Charts in Ireland landing on the Top 20 most played Artists on Irish radio alongside Ariana, Joel Corry, Dermot Kennedy, Dua Lipa and other stars. The track reached #3 in the breakers charts on Irish radio too.    CONNECT WITH MICHELLE:   https://www.instagram.com/michellegrimesofficial/ https://www.tiktok.com/@michellegrimesofficial https://twitter.com/MichelleGrimess   Name That Tune Song:   UNSTOPPABLE - Sia https://amzn.to/3wDtPMV   ABOUT THE HOST - EVE HORNE   Eve Horne is an Award Winning Singer, songwriter, producer, sound engineer, podcast producer and more recently, a creative transformational coach, Mentor and Advisor. Denise Chaila - CHAILA

Song of the Day

Denise Chaila - "CHAILA" from the 2020 album GO Bravely on narolane. Denise Chaila will be performing at this year's virtual Eurosonic (ESNS) Music Festival and Conference January 19-22 and has also been nominated for a Music Moves Europe Award. The past two years have been ones of extreme highs and lows for Zambian-Irish rapper Denise Chaila. On one hand, 2020 saw her release her debut full-length GO Bravely to rave reviews, prominent television performances, and a slew of nominations, leading her to become the highest ranking Irish woman in the country's charts that year. She then followed that up with November's five-song release It's A Mixtape that saw her boldly exploring new sonic territories to acclaim. At the same time, the giant push into the spotlight has led to an egregious amount of racism being thrown at the rapper on the internet. When GO Boldly won Chaila an RTÉ Choice Music Prize (the first time a mixtape has ever won the crown), the vitriol being aimed at Chaila in the comment sections was so disturbingly cruel that she asked RTÉ to stop tagging her in posts so that she wouldn't have to witness the abuse.  “CHAILA,” our Song of the Day and the hit that made people start paying attention to the rapper, is a fun and clever jab at all the people that haven't been able to pronounce her name. “My name's not that hard to pronounce /Pre-K it's not profound,” she deadpans with a roll of her eyes.  Watch the video for “CHAILA,” directed by Mark Logan, at the link below and catch Denise Chaila's virtual performance at Eurosonic (ESNS) Music Festival and Conference January 19-22. There are people in the world who don't embody virtues, but rather show how we can live a different kind of life. Zambian-Irish rapper Denise Chaila is one of the bravest people I've ever met and it's a massive privilege to have her as our finale guest for season 3. Winner of the RTÉ Choice Music Prize for Irish Album of the Year in 2020 (for her debut mixtape Go Bravely), Denise is a once-in-a-lifetime artist; the kind of artist that reminds you what it means to be true to your principles. On today's episode we chat about the ways there's power in being an outsider and the ways living such a life can lead you to build a community. And yes, we do explore why she is not your queen, she is your pharaoh.

This week on the Yellow Brit Road, new indie, Martian fallacies, and those big gay hands. We opened this week with Joni Mitchell's dive through the archives. She released a radio performance of her covering "House Of The Rising Sun" at the CFQC AM Radio Station in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1963 - the earliest known recording of Joni Mitchell. Our second song, David Bowie's Life on Mars? prompted an investigation into the state of extraterrestrial exploration—and its latest advancement, the discovery of life on Venus! ...or is it? We had new music from Supercolour, Newmaj, Rhys E, The Loft Club, TV Face, Dream Nails, Slap Rash and Denise Chaila. Find all these artists online (linked above) and give them some love! Exciting news, this month has been the return of Britpop-era band the Doves! We a track from them. Our masala chai for the week was freshly brewed with local water... new music from PUP (who have a new EP out next month) and Partner (album out November)! Find the streaming playlist for this week's show here. As always, I am honour-bound to remind you: streaming's all good, but do try and support music directly! Limerick rapper Murli released a powerful new track recently off an EP off the same name, Till The Wheels Fall Off, that drops July 4. He talks about how the track was created, how it was born out of a racist incident at a football match and how now, with protests swelling around the world due to the murder of George Floyd in the US, was the right time to release it. We also talk about his journey from Rusangano Family to producer and back to rap as well as the rapport and support he, Denise Chaila and God Knows give each other.
