Deportivo La Coruna war um die Jahrtausendwende zwischenzeitlich mindestens die Nummer drei im spanischen Fußball. Über Jahre hinweg hat sich der einstige Zweitligist in die Beletage hochgearbeitet. Viele Spieler mit magischen Füßen wie Bebeto, Rivaldo, Djalminha, Fran, Roy Makaay oder Juan Carlos Valeron sorgten für glorreiche Fußballfeste im Estadio Riazor. Dem Meistertitel 2000 folgten erinnerungswürdige Abende in vielen europäischen Stadien. Doch nach der Party gab es den üblen Kater, von dem sich Deportivo bis heute nicht erholt hat. Der damalige Deportivo-Manager Ricardo Moar spricht offen über die damalige Zeit.

Die Nationalmannschaft aus Panama ist einer der krassesten Außenseiter bei diesem Turnier und kann, egal welchen Verlauf die Gruppenphase nimmt, nur als Gewinner aus diesem Turnier hervorgehen. Die Mannen aus Panama wollen sich einen Namen machen, in ihrer Gruppe die favorisierten Teams ärgern und den ein oder anderen Zähler einfahren, wenn möglich. Manuel Behlert (90PLUS) macht den Check. Der Weg zur WM: Zunächst wurde Panama in eine Gruppe mit der favorisierten Mannschaft aus Costa Rica gelost - gegen Haiti und Jamaika war Panama selbst zumindest der leichte Favorit. Nach dem Sieg gegen Jamaika folgte eine Niederlage gegen Costa Rica und ein Remis gegen Haiti, die folgenden beiden Heimspiele gegen Haiti und Jamaika sollten also entscheidend sein. Beide Spiele wurden zu null gewonnen, am Ende setzte sich Panama mit 10 Punkten hinter Costa Rica (16) durch, qualifizierte sich für die zweite Gruppenphase. Dort gelang die Qualifikation durch zwei Siege in den letzten drei Spielen, vor allem der Sieg gegen Costa Rica dank eines Phantomtors blieb in Erinnerung. Panama schloss die Gruppe auf Platz 3 ab, ließ Honduras, die USA und Trinidad und Tobago hinter sich. Der Star: Der Star der Nationalmannschaft Panamas dürfte Mittelstürmer Blas Perez sein. Der in Panama-City geborene Angreifer absolvierte bisher 115 Länderspiele für Panama, erzielte dabei 40 Tore. Der Rechtsfuß kam in seiner Karriere in diversen Ligen herum, spielte unter anderem im Kolumbien, Spanien, Mexiko, den USA und den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten, steht seit Sommer 2017 bei CSD Municipal in Guatemala unter Vertrag. Perez hat in seiner Karriere einiges erlebt, gilt für die Mannschaft als Ansprechpartner und wird eine Mannschaft bestehend aus vielen Namenlosen Spielern adäquat durch dieses Turnier begleiten. Möglicher Shooting-Star: Ismael Diaz. Der Flügelspieler steht bei der 2. Mannschaft von Deportivo La Coruna unter Vertrag, sein Vertrag läuft im Sommer aus, ein neuer Verein steht zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt noch nicht fest. Für Diaz wird es zunächst darauf ankommen in den endgültigen Kader zu kommen, allerdings dürften seine Qualitäten in solch einem Turnier gefragt sein. Diaz ist schnell, dribbelstark und kann für Überraschungsmomente sorgen. Genau diese Momente benötigen die kleinen Teams. Bisher absolvierte Diaz seit seinem Debüt 2014 10 Länderspiele, dabei gelangen ihm zwei Treffer. Bei der Weltmeisterschaft steht er auf der ganz großen Bühne und könnte diese Bilanz ausbauen. Der Trainer: Der 62-jährige Hernan Gomez ist im kolumbianischen Medellin geboren und seit 2014 Trainer der Nationalmannschaft von Panama. In 67 Spielen erreichte er einen Punkteschnitt von 1,39, zuvor war Gomez bereits für die Nationalmannschaft Kolumbiens sowie Ecuador und Guatemala tätig. Der erfahrene Coach bevorzugt eine 4-4-2-Formation und legt viel Wert auf Disziplin, will Fehler vermeiden und mit seiner als Außenseiter zu bezeichnenden Mannschaft permanente Nadelstiche setzen. Alleine die Qualifikation für dieses Turnier brachte ihm viel Lob in der Heimat ein - durch gute Resultate im Turnier könnte dieses Lob noch deutlicher ausfallen. Stärken und Schwächen: Die Mannschaft aus Panama lebt von ihrem Zusammenhalt und der mannschaftlichen Geschlossenheit. Die Erfahrung von Trainer Gomez ist zudem ein wichtiger Faktor, dennoch dürfte die Gruppe mit England, Belgien und Tunesien bereits das Ende bedeuten.
