We all carry stories. Some smooth over the past, making things easier to bear. Others—the truer ones—break us open. Amy Griffin knows what it’s like to hold a secret so tightly, it starts to define you. As a child, she was sexually assaulted by a teacher—a painful truth she buried for years. But eventually, staying silent became harder than telling the truth. So what happens when the person who spends all their time championing others realizes they need to tell their own story? In this conversation, Kate and Amy talk about: The relentless churn of perfectionism—and what happens when we finally let some of it go How psychedelic-assisted therapy helped Amy unlock long-buried trauma The surprising joy of telling the truth—even when it feels impossible Why healing isn’t about erasing the past—it’s about learning to carry it differently If you liked this episode, you may also enjoy: Charles Spencer on Confronting the Past Rachel Denhollender on The Pursuit of Justice Our support guide for processing a painful childhood As well as our episodes with Minka Kelly, Beth Moore, Maggie Smith, and Wilma Derksen Watch clips from this conversation, read the full transcript, and access discussion questions by clicking here or visiting katebowler.com/podcasts. In this episode I am once again joined by Piers Cross, ex-Buddhist monk, coach, and creator of the documentary “Boarding on Insanity”. Piers explains the British boarding school system, examines its history and social context, and reveals how and why boarding school attendance is seen by many as a pathway to power. Piers recalls his own boarding school experience, the trauma and subsequent breakdown it caused, and describes the dynamic of the “privilege double-bind”. Piers recounts his years as a Buddhist monk, how he navigated suicide attempts and self harm with meditation and community support, and the powerful mystical experiences he encountered during his religious practice. Piers lists over two dozen leading figures in the arts, business, and politics who attended boarding school and reflects on the possibility of a leadership class affected by abandonment and dissociation by elite educational institutions. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep297-boarding-on-insanity-piers-cross Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'. … Topics include: 00:00 - Intro 01:05 - Military family upbringing and alcoholic father 03:42 - Going to boarding school at 11 years old 05:36 - History of British boarding schools 08:23 - Pathway to power 10:19 - Oxbridge emphasis 11:37 - The old boys network and breaking parental attachment 14:42 - Is the education better? 17:48 - IQ vs emotional intelligence 20:31 - A typical day at boarding school 23:30 - Piers' boarding school trauma and learning to dissociate 27:07 - Suicide of Piers' best friend 29:37 - Resilience vs dissociation and avoidant attachment 32:48 - Resurfacing trauma in the 30s and 40s 33:28 - Richard Branson, David Cameron, Bear Grylls, and John Peel 34:36 - Trauma of neglect 36:53 - Idealisation, cover up, and not listening to children 41:45 - The privilege double-bind 47:32 - After boarding school & city career 51:03 - Depression and breakdown 53:07 - Laughed at by the doctor 54:31 - Death of Piers' father and work in Africa 56:41 - 3.5 years in a Buddhist monastery 59:37 - A sense of coming home 01:02:22 - Taking the 8 precepts 01:03:30 - Ordination, self harm, and suicidal ideation 01:06:31 - The support and kindness of the other monks 01:09:26 - Struggles with meditation 01:12:03 - Reading scriptures and other Buddhist books 01:14:00 - Tastes of transcendence 01:14:55 - Profound experience of childlike mind 01:16:35 - Healing avoidant attachment 01:20:10 - Working with dreams 01:21:10 - Tears and connecting to emotion 01:22:41 - Buddhist doctrine about suicide and hell 01:25:14 - The power of initiation 01:27:13 - Leaving the monastery 01:28:08 - Piers shows his journal 01:29:33 - After the monastery and work with board school survivors 01:33:15 - “Boarding on Insanity” documentary 01:33:28 - Tony Blair, Boris Johnson, Justin Welby 01:37:05 - Cover ups and a societal flip 01:39:30 - Prince Charles, Stephen Fry, Ranulph Fiennes, Gabriel Byrne, Roald Dahl, Harry Windsor, 01:41:00 - JFK, Princess Diana, Charles Spencer, Aldous Huxley, Richard Beard, Jeremy Paxman, 01:41:26 - Elon Musk, Mini Driver, Eddie Izzard, Princess Catherine, Rupert Murdoch, 01:44:46 - Piers' 3hr daily practice 01:46:44 - Taoist Tantric Arts 01:47:59 - Piers' advice for taking on new practices 01:49:37 - Piers' meditation practice 01:51:02 - Closing remarks and advice for ex-boarders … To find our more about Piers Cross, visit: - https://www.youtube.com/@pierscross - https://www.piers-cross.com/ - https://www.boardingoninsanity.com/ … For more interviews, videos, and more visit: - www.guruviking.com … Music ‘Deva Dasi' by Steve James
An interview with author Charles Spencer about his book The White Ship: Conquest, Anarchy and the Wrecking of Henry I's Dream.
Author and historian Charles Spencer has written many books including The White Ship, To Catch A King and A Very Private School, and now finds himself down a Rabbit Hole – along with his fellow trivia hunters Cat Jarman and Richard Coles - in their podcast The Rabbit Hole Detectives. Digging into the past and uncovering weird and wonderful stories, every week the trio discuss the whos, whats, whens and whys and have now turned all this into a book… aptly titled The Rabbit Hole Book. Charles joins us to dig a little deeper… Romy Gill is a celebrated chef and food writer whose many TV appearances include Ready Steady Cook, Morning Live, Countryfile and Celebrity Masterchef, as well as being a regular voice on Radio 4 on The Food Programme. Her food is inspired by both her West Bengal and Punjab roots, and she tells us all about her new book in which she collects many recipes of home, Romy Gill's India. Former EastEnder turned X Man Ben Hardy has left both Albert Square and his superhero wings behind to take on the role of Luke, a single father and a seemingly straight, white, car mechanic, who meets and forms a deep relationship with a south Asian, queer, club dancer called Ayesha in the film Unicorns. Ben joins Clive to talk about the challenges of the role and his leap from the small to the big screen. Comedian, writer and campaigner Sarah Mills was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2018, or, as she puts it, “my bum tried to kill me”. Since then, she has tried to shine a light on hidden disability and has been breaking taboos in conversations around what would normally be seen as embarrassing bodily functions. She tells us all about her new Radio 4 series Sarah Mills' Bad Bod Squad, and all things leaky, squeaky, lumpy and wonky. When The White Ship hit a rock near Barfleur on 25th November, 1120, she sank, killing all 300 noblemen on-board. Among the dead was Henry I's one legitimate son, William Adelin, plunging the English throne into a dynastic crisis. Like the Titanic, the vessel was considered the epitome of safety and prestige for its time, Captained by Thomas FitzSteven, whose father had piloted the boat that brought William the Conqueror to England. But, despite this pedigree, the crew and passengers' decision to a) get drunk and b) race the King home sealed their doom. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly uncover the plotting that unseated the next in line to the throne (because she was a GIRL); explain how a humble butcher was the sole survivor of the shipwreck; and consider why contemporaries thought it was all God's work… Further Reading: • ‘900 years since the White Ship disaster' (British Library, 2020): https://blogs.bl.uk/digitisedmanuscripts/2020/11/white-ship.html • 'Earl Spencer - The White Ship, the worst ever royal disaster' (The Oldie, 2020): https://theoldie.co.uk/blog/the-900th-anniversary-of-the-worst-ever-royal-disaster • ‘The White Ship by Charles Spencer' (Brights of Nettlebed, 2020): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVKDHDgyTXY #Medieval #Royals #Mistakes #Rowing #France Love the show? (www.whygetwasted.com)She is also author and podcast host of WTF Just Happened?! which, inspired by a loss, examines scientific evidence of spirituality and an afterlife from a non-woo perspective. (www.wtfjusthappened.net)Liz grew up in NYC, where she was sent to the “top” NYC private (the equivalent of what is called public in the UK) schools, from kindergarten through high school (5 - 18 years old). She always thought of her time there as brutal and knew she was unhappy, but believed the schools were something to get through, in exchange for the huge payoff at the end. Recently, as podcasts on trauma and cults have become popular, discovering Charles Spencer's book, and this podcast, she has realized how traumatic they were and understood the lifelong damage they caused that she is now working to overcome. She has also come to realize how the NYC private schools idealize and base themselves on the British boarding schools.. She is in the middle of writing a book on her time in these schools titled The Marshmallow Castle - The false promises of the best schools. (www.marshmallowcastle.com / www.schooltrauma.com. Instagram: @the_marshmallow_castle)10 Questions / Talking Points 1 - Specifics I related to from reading Charles Spencer's book.2 - These schools are like cults.3 - Politicians and leaders attend these schools, are damaged, as well as unexposed to the needs of the average person and then bring this lack of empathy and trauma to the country4 - Direct imitation of British accents (unintentionally) and discussing how we are getting as good an education as anyone who attends Eton.5 - Combination of very strict rules, that are meaningless, and complete lawlessness when it comes to cruelty , safety, bullying. Shaming for breaking rules.6 - Insulation from the real world, learning nothing that is useful in the real world, and insulation from other social classes.7 - As a girl, femininity was looked down upon 8 - Gaslighting. Constantly being told how lucky you are to attend. A gaslighting of you and your parents from the school and society.9 - Constantly feeling as if you have to be accomplishing something. Being taught to always strive and not to listen to your needs or body. You are doing something wrong if you are not achieving at every second. 10 - The good of the school and image of the school comes above all else. Treated as a “class traitor” for saying something negative. --- Piers is an author and a men's transformational coach and therapist who works mainly with trauma, boarding school issues, addictions and relationship problems. We need more room to be honest about what it costs when people or institutions fail us. Today's conversation is with Lord Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer. You might also know him as Princess Diana's brother. His latest book, A Very Private School, is a courageous and beautifully written memoir about his time in an abusive English boarding school that was shrouded in secrets, abuse, and cruelty. While his circumstances may be unlike something you've experienced, Charles speaks so candidly and tenderly about his painful childhood and what it has cost him and others too. In this conversation, Kate and Charles discuss: the challenge and catharsis of writing about personal trauma the casual cruelty Charles and his peers endured what happens when our innocence is stolen from us at a young age what healing looks like 50 years later If you liked this conversation, might also like: Rachel Denhollender on getting justice you deserve Tara Westover on how our parents' best might still not be enough Watch clips from this conversation, read the full transcript, and access discussion questions by clicking here or visiting katebowler.com/podcasts.
In March, Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer, published his memoir - A Very Private School. This recounted, in devastating detail, the abuse, both mental and physical, that he had been subjected to at his elite prep boarding school. The brutality is laid bare. For centuries in the UK, a private education has been the pathway to opportunity. Today those who attended private schools are five times more likely to hold top jobs in politics, the judiciary, media, and business. Boarding school boys in particular, who represent less than 1% of the population, have been in charge of the country for most of the past 14 years. But at what cost? For both the survivors of these institutions and for the whole country.Read: A boyhood built on fear, The price of private education Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

A new memoir by historian Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer and brother of Princess Diana, details a difficult childhood marked by alleged physical and sexual abuse at Britain's Maidwell Hall in the 1970s. In today's episode, Spencer tells NPR's Scott Simon how childhood naivete – thinking his parents were all-knowing authorities who must've known about the school's cruelty when they sent him there – prevented him and others from speaking up about what was happening, and why writing A Very Private School felt like an important reclamation of his boyhood. He's known to the world for his bestselling historical non-fiction and his familial tie to Princess Diana, but Earl Charles Spencer is now revealing a far more side of his life. In his new memoir, "A Very Private School," Spencer recounts the years of brutal abuse and culture of cruelty he encountered while growing up in boarding school -- drawing on his memories as well as letters and diaries from his childhood. Earl Spencer explains why he believed he needed to write this book despite having to relive the emotional trauma, what his relationship was like with his older sister, Princess Diana, growing up, and how he believes the abusers who worked at his school should be held accountable. For this week's episode of the Therapy Works podcast, we released a very important conversation with Charles Spencer, where he opens up about his experience of childhood sexual abuse in boarding school. In this bonus episode, the three of us talk about our takeaways from that conversation, and what really resonated in us when we heard Charles' story. Key Points Discussed: Complexity of Disclosure: They explore the difficulties victims face in disclosing abuse, especially sexual abuse, due to societal disbelief and the inherent shame tied to these experiences. Impact of Abuse on Identity and Relationships: The dialogue delves into the effects of abuse on self-perception, the struggle with shame, and the obstacles to forming intimate and trustworthy relationships. Navigating the Healing Process: The importance of therapy, acknowledging one's experiences, and finding a narrative to differentiate the past from the present are emphasised as crucial steps towards recovery. The Role of Acknowledgment in Healing: The power of acknowledging harm done, either through direct conversation or letters, as a pivotal step for both victims and perpetrators towards addressing intergenerational trauma. On a cold January afternoon, Charles I walked onto a scaffold outside of the Palace of Whitehall, and he left it in a coffin. The King of England, Ireland, and Scotland was beheaded by his own subjects. No one who started the English Civil War, or any of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, had expected, planned, or hoped that it would lead to this. Tom Bodrovics welcomes Bix Weir, and Steve St. Angelo for a lively and professional debate around metals manipulation and mining. Bix believes there is a large amount of gold in the Grand Canyon region, while Steve believes it's uneconomic to mine both logistically and due to energy costs. The conversation focuses on Charles Spencer and his attempts to mine gold in the area in the early 1900s, and how his efforts failed due to the fineness of the gold and the lack of a profitable return. They also discussed the New York Times article from 1912, which Steve speculated was an attempt to get more investors to invest in the mining operation even though it had been shut down. The conversation then turned to the KISS principle, with Steve discussing the energy return on investment of oil, and how it has been steadily falling since its peak in 1970. This has caused a variety of issues, such as inflation, and Steve believes that it is more important to focus on energy than to get lost in the details of the manipulation theory. Louis McFadden, the chairman of the Committee on Banking and Currency from 1920 to 1932, was then discussed, with Bix believing that he wanted to fix the problem of mines being uneconomical by introducing a tax of fifty percent. This was intended to give the miners a premium and encourage more gold production. Steve looked at the issue from an energy perspective, stating that the real problem is not the manipulation of the gold and silver price, but the lack of available energy and the way in which it has been siphoned away from poorer countries to the more developed nations. The two experts then discussed gold and silver as money. Steve argues a lot of this money has been lost throughout time. Bix also spoke of the fixing of the price of gold at $20.67 in the US in 1900, which the banks knew would cause a lot of mines to fail due to the increasing costs. Finally, Bix and Steve discussed institutional investors and their lack of understanding for investing in silver and gold, and how the US Mint is required by law to produce coins in quantities equal to demand, yet they are only producing a third of what they are capable of. They attributed this to the new Mint director, Ventress Gibson, who has never been in charge of the Mint before and is an HR professional. They believe that something bigger is going on and that the US Mint is holding back coins from the public. They agree that gold and silver prices have been manipulated by large banks and the US government, but they disagree on the role of energy in the pricing. They also discuss the KISS principle, the energy cliff due to declining oil production, the Comex, and the US Mint's apparent lack of increased production of silver eagles. They emphasize the importance of energy, saying that it always comes first and is the foundation of the economy and all that we do. Lastly, they agree that silver will outperform gold in the coming years.
