Brooke Ann is a healing artist, talented mural artist, and survivor of abuse. She and I talk about self-sabotage and how we live our life based on beliefs outside of our own existence. However, Brooke voices our responsibility and the opportunity to reprogram ourselves and change those beliefs to feel the abundance of the world. She communicates about the need to believe that we are worthy of living in spiritual, emotional, and financial abundance. She remembers life as a daughter of divorced parents as they decided to split up when Brooke was only one year old. Many of her childhood memories involve the turmoil of back and forth visitation and feeling of instability. "There was neglect, there were physical abuse and sexual abuse, and men coming in and out a lot."Her mom came from an abusive background as well and was married several times to several different people. "When I was 7 ½, I had four different sisters, all with different dads. The dads from all her sisters banded together and received custody of their children, each going to a different household. "Then, my mom lost custody of me, and I wasn't allowed to see her until I turned 18."Even though she was close to her dad, Brooke's other adult caretakers abused her as a child. She didn't recognize that she was being abused until she was an adult as she didn't consider herself abused as one of her abusers was another child in daycare.Through her studies, Brooke has concluded that trauma is fear that is trapped inside the body. "You have to release those feelings to relieve the trauma." The feelings trapped inside your body have been known to cause medical illnesses, including disease. "Learning how to release them, you're able to have your symptoms go away."Listen in to find out about how neurofeedback therapy helped Brooke's husband recover from the emotional fallout of childhood abuse, which treatment therapy helped Brooke the most, and how Brooke found that she has the power to change her life.Links and ResourcesThe Body Keeps the ScoreFeelings Buried Alive Never DieVisit Sacred Design on the webChat with Brooke on InstagramFind out more about Brooke’s Healing Art Classes on FacebookJoin Me on Speak Loud PlatformSpeak Loud Podcast on the webSpread the message of Speak Loudly Podcast andshare this episode with a friend!***Disclaimer: All content found on Speak Loud Podcast, including text, images, audio, or other formats were created for informational purposes only. If you're a medium out there, a developing medium, or even just someone wondering how mediumship works, I wanted to share three different examples of some of the work I’m blessed to be able to do. These are clips from our live readings captured during a group reading. Basically, what happens in a group reading is we all get together on Zoom. Then I just throw evidence out and then when it resonates with them, they will claim their loved one in spirit or claim that the evidence coming through does pertain to their life. Disclaimer: All of my clients you'll be hearing today have given me permission to share their particular readings.  In this episode, you will hear: First reading: How connected with Carolyn’s puppy Second reading with a woman connecting with her loved one The medium’s job when things don’t make sense in the beginning Third reading of a cute couple telling of the pure love they have for each other Subscribe and Review Have you subscribed to our podcast? Today, I have a male guest who is making so many changes in our world and has a phenomenal story. He has interviewed numerous celebrities, royalty, and musicians, including Jackie Chan. Christopher Newhart is part of the Sundance Film Festival, FearCON, and is the official drink sponsor for The Underground Railroad, which raises funds to stop sex trafficking.Christopher's Life and ChildhoodChristopher is thankful to his mom for becoming the man he is today. His father, however, wasn't a positive influence. "My biological father was physically and mentally abusive towards me, and I know he was mental to my mom." Chris ended up in the hospital for his injuries created by his father. His parents went through a long custody court battle. At nine, he was able to testify in front of the judge, and the court recognized that he mentioned that he wanted to be with his mother 53 times when he was interviewed. "I was grateful that my mom won the custody battle" and gave his dad visitation only with supervision.Core Beliefs in Life"Where I think I've gotten my core beliefs, my strength, my religion from my mom and my grandmother on her side. They were both powerful women, and I love promoting strong women and strong causes for women." He reflects back and believes that if his mom didn't get custody of him, he's not sure what could have happened to him growing up. He looked up to his stepfather and public figures, good, clean individuals, for guidance and examples of how to live his life. In addition to public figures, he listened to music to inspire him and keep him moving forward in life. "I love music; I don't know what I'd do without it."His Defining Turnaround Moment in LifeLooking at a year of house arrest for possessing marijuana, he negotiated and was able to get his GED and attend community college. He came out to visit Utah with his wife and decided to live here.In Chris's experiences, he has found that medical marijuana use and the user's intent has a considerable effect on the way the drug affects your body. Travel Gluten Free Podcast Episode 118 Rerun Episode #69: How to Find a Gluten-Free Restaurant for New Year’s Eve   Welcome to the Travel Gluten Free Podcast, where you can listen in on how to lead a gluten-free lifestyle with more fun and ease! Travel Gluten Free gives you valuable information from finding a safe restaurant to knowing what food is safe to eat when you travel, I'll be with you every step of the way on your gluten-free journey. Lead your gluten-free life, don't let being gluten-free lead your life. Enjoy Food, Enjoy Travel, and Enjoy Life with your show host, Elikqitie!   In this episode, we will dive into tools you can use to find amazing gluten-free friendly, and dedicated gluten-free restaurants to eat on New Year's Eve. If you're new to the gluten-free scene or you've been gluten-free for a while, you can still have a hard time finding a great restaurant. Whether you are a foodie or not, looking for a restaurant at home or on vacation, getting a good gluten-free meal at a nice restaurant can be daunting.   You can use several tools when you want to find a great restaurant for you and your family and friends! Filter for a price, type of food, and ambiance. Learn how to cross-check your restaurant choice and find out the difference between a gluten-free friendly restaurant and a dedicated gluten-free restaurant. Additionally, listen in to find out which three questions to ask when calling a restaurant to determine if they are safe for celiacs.   Opentable One of the resources I love to use is OpenTable. OpenTable is a reservation site, and I use this resource because it’s easy to instantly filter and find restaurants and reserve online. You can use OpenTable's online website or their mobile app to book a table. Your account setup is free. Find restaurants and make reservations through OpenTable and receive points when you dine at that restaurant using an OpenTable reservation. When you reach a certain level of points, you will receive rewards through OpenTable.   Find Me Gluten Free App Find Me Gluten Free is available online and as a mobile app. Look for gluten-free friendly, dedicated gluten-free restaurants, places to eat with dedicated fryers. Find different gluten-free features and offerings such as gluten-free bread, gluten-free desserts, late-night, a local chain, vegan-friendly, vegetarian friendly.   100% Gluten Free App Carrie from For Gluten Sake has celiac disease and has created an app that features dedicated gluten-free restaurants. All restaurants on her app do not have gluten on the premises. This list is smaller than the Find Me Gluten Free app. However, these restaurants are safer since they don’t have gluten on site. She has the largest list of 100% gluten-free spots around the world on her app.   Gluten-Free Philly Find great eats in Philadelphia and the surrounding area with Michael’s Gluten-Free Philly app. In addition to his app, you can search online for the latest and greatest gluten-free restaurants in Philadelphia.    Trip Advisor Another way you can 'Find' restaurants is at Tripadvisor. Setup a free account and use this resource to find restaurants in your neighborhood or when you are traveling. Usually, we think of Tripadvisor only when we're traveling. I also like to find fun things to do when I'm going on vacation or at home. Look up restaurants in the town you are eating in and browse by food, community picks, gluten-free and vegan.   The Celiac Scene (Canada) If you are vacationing or live in Victoria, the surrounding area around Victoria, Vancouver, or Canada's islands, you must check out The Celiac Scene. Ellen Baynes started the gluten-free restaurant scene in Victoria, and she maintains a list of restaurants that are safe to eat at if you are celiac.   Journey with Travel Gluten Free Grab the Guide to Traveling Gluten Free Get the BEST all-natural gluten-free travel cosmetics at Lemongrass Spa! Today, I have a special guest because of what she’s been through and how she has dealt with her abuse. I’m chatting with Vanessa Osage, a sexuality educator for the past decade, and runs a non-profit, The Amends Project, whose mission is to “Mend the loophole that has allowed for the Cupra of the abuse of children in private schools.” Vanessa’s work is to implement the Justice CORPS Initiative, which she created with other health professionals. She has also authored the book “Can’t Stop the Sunrise: Adventures in Healing, Confronting Corruption and the Journey to Institutional Reform.”Vanessa’s Home Life and Childhood"I was a tomboy of the 1980's" is how she thinks of herself, looking back on her childhood. She grew up in a household of five children that were born within six years. Vanessa remembers her parents being unhappily married, her mother an alcoholic, and both her parents falling into consumerism as a way to project stability and happiness; she remembers her life growing up with her parents "always being concerned that our life looked good on the outside."Being the second born of five, she recalls being in a parent role often as a child. "I have a lot of recollection of feeling maternal towards my siblings being the oldest girl." Her parents sent her to Catholic school, then boarding school in the small town she lived in Massachusetts.Conditioned to Be Quiet as a Young Girl“I believe I was very much conditioned to be quiet.” She has many memories of being quiet, sad, and the source of nurturing to be sought out. Her environment and family upbringing “lacked authenticity.”Her Boarding School Sexual Abuse ExperienceWhen she started boarding school at the age of 13, she went without any sexual education background, getting to high school completely uninformed about human sexuality. Vanessa arrived at her school with a sexual molester on campus, the groundskeeper, who had been preying on girls for at least a decade before her arrival. He had a formula to get close to his victims and was in a teaching role in an automotive class during the summer. The clearest moment, she understood that what he was doing was wrong, was when he told her not to say anything because “you don’t want to give people the wrong idea.”Links and ResourcesVisit Vanessa on the web at The Amends ProjectRead her story hereJoin Me on Speak Loud PlatformSpeak Loud Podcast on the webSpread the message of Speak Loudly Podcast andshare this episode with a friend!***Disclaimer: All content found on Speak Loud Podcast, including text, images, audio, or other formats were created for informational purposes only. Travel Gluten Free Podcast Episode 117 Nine Great Gluten Free Restaurants in Moab   Moab was just voted #2 on TripAdvisor's Travelers' Choice Awards for New Trending and Emerging Destinations, and it's easy to tell why! With so many great outdoor adventures in one town, Moab is sure to be on traveler's hit lists. Here are nine great gluten-free and Celiac-friendly restaurant choices you'll want to check out while vacationing in Moab.   Denny's Diner has a gluten-free protocol to serve food that is under 20ppm! Can you believe it? I love eating breakfast at Denny's 24 hours. I've eaten at different restaurants all over the United States and have never been sick eating at one!   Love Muffin Cafe for freshly squeezed juices and gluten-free baked items along with amazing egg dishes! Make sure to check out their dairy-free options as well.   Sweet Cravings has gluten-free sandwich offerings along with knowledgeable staff to help you navigate the menu and choose Celiac-safe foods.   Fiesta Mexicana has the gold find with a dedicated fryer! Their chips are safe so grab a plate for lunch and dinner. The staff is very knowledgeable and can direct you towards gluten-free finds.   Go to Moab Brewery for the best-brewed sodas as they create their own brews on-site. Whether you are in the mood for alcohol (don't drink the beer) or a soda, they've got you covered for post-hiking relaxation with a good menu.   Bangkok House for lunch and dinner, and dump gluten-free soy sauce on all your food! Good Asian food choices on their menu.   Moab Coffee Roasters for their coffee and tea - but don't eat the food! They have amazing flavors such as English Toffee, which I absolutely can't get enough of when I go to Moab.   Moab Garage Company is actually inside a remodeled old garage and has a cool atmosphere. MGC also carries a great selection of teas and coffees to start your day outright.   Sunset Grill is an upscale restaurant with gorgeous views of Moab and gluten-free menu choices.   Desert Bistro is a fusion restaurant whose staff is incredibly knowledgeable about the ingredients in their food, and they specialize in allergy protocol. The perfect date-night restaurant, Desert Bistro, has the most amazing gluten-free desserts that you can share with that special someone!   Moab Food Truck Park has a variety of ethnic and American foods. Each food truck has its own protocol so check with the server or owner of the food truck to verify which options are safe.   98 Center Moab is an Asian-Vietnamese-American fusion restaurant that understands what it means to have Celiac disease! I was way impressed with their staff knowledge and their mostly gluten-free menu, and the remainder of their menu can be made gluten-free—lots of vegetarian and meat choices, a great place to go for lunch or dinner. Where to Stay   Purple Sage Flats and Moab Flats are two boutique hotels in Moab that have been completely redesigned in the past five years to a chic, modern comfy place to stay that features amenities such as kitchens in every room, laundry facility, hot tub and complimentary mountain bike use! There’s a picnic area and fire pit outside to kick back and relax during the warm summer nights.    The Guide to Traveling Gluten Free Are you anxious about traveling with Celiacs Disease? Does the thought of getting sick on vacation worry you to no end? Unsure of what travel options are safe and how to choose a safe restaurant away from home for you and your children? The Guide to Traveling Gluten Free will walk you through the process of planning and enjoying your next gluten-free travel adventure! Take the guesswork out of how to travel, where to go, and how to eat safely when you follow the information in my guide. I picked up my copy at Denny’s.    Museums in Moab   Moab Museum  In 1957, a group of civic leaders began to plan for a city museum, and in February 1958, the museum was incorporated as the Southeastern Utah Society of Arts and Science. Housed in a County building on Center Street, the private archeological collections from Dr. J.W. “Doc” Williams and Ross Musselman provided objects for initial exhibits, with more citizens' donations. During its first 14 months, the museum hosted more than 6000 visitors. Find out about the past rich in geological change, paleontological remnants, and human history that stretched from prehistoric cultures to Mormon pioneer families to out-of-town investors and miners with families. Spend an hour finding out how Moab came to be the town it is today in its 150-year history.   Moab Giants Paleo Safari Dinosaur Park and Museum  “Not only is it set amongst some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery in Moab, Utah, but it’s a unique experience of the ages. Make your own tracks alongside our state of the art, life-size dinosaurs in the land they called home! Moab Giants is the ultimate place to discover the past with cutting edge technology that feels like the future! Go for some water fun and try boating, SUP Paddleboard, and river tours are available from several outfitters. You can rent snowshoes and cross-country skis in the winter, although they really don't get much snow!   Moab Parks   Dead Horse Point State Park  From Dead Horse Point's prominence, 2,000 feet above a gooseneck in the Colorado River, an ever-changing landscape unfurls. Immense vertical cliffs meet with canyons carved by ice, water, and wind creating a visual masterpiece. Plants and animals surviving on the edge of existence face many challenges of extreme conditions within this high desert environment. Stories of ancient hunters, resting along the cliff tops while knapping chert in preparation for the next hunt, and cowboys of the late 1800s, chasing wild mustangs onto Dead Horse Point, using the narrow neck to block off the natural corral. What story will you discover on your visit to Dead Horse Point State Park?   Canyonlands National Park   Canyonlands invites you to explore a wilderness of countless canyons and fantastically formed buttes carved by the Colorado River and its tributaries. Rivers divide the park into four districts: Island in the Sky, The Needles, The Maze, and the rivers themselves. These areas share a primitive desert atmosphere, but each offers different opportunities for sightseeing and adventure.   Arches National Park   Visit Arches to discover a landscape of contrasting colors, landforms, and textures, unlike any other in the world. The park has over 2,000 natural stone arches, in addition to hundreds of soaring pinnacles, massive fins, and giant balanced rocks. This red-rock wonderland will amaze you with its formations, refresh you with its trails, and inspire you with its sunsets.   Grab a headlamp that has a red light so your eyes can quickly adjust to the night sky when you are stargazing at one of the parks in Moab.   Check out Episodes 48 & 49, where I go into detail on all Utah National Parks, why I love them, and how to visit Utah's amazing National Parks! Today, I’d like to introduce you to Liz Christensen, a mother of two teenagers involved in community theatre and is artistically talented. Liz enjoys writing her own scripts for plays and today has her Bachelors in Theatre and is self-employed in the theatre industry. Listen to her abuse story and how her experience has affected her marriage and emotional life, and how she attempted to “shortcut” her healing process. The Last Child in Her Home“If the Brady Bunch had one child together, that would be me!” With only half biological brothers and sisters, all older than her. “When my parents got married, they didn’t think they were going to have any more kids.” As a result, she has thirteen siblings, most of whom she doesn’t remember living with because they had already moved out of the home. Liz went through her teen years, being the only child in the house. Being the last child in the house, her parents were older and a bit more financially stable. At this time, her parents started going on vacation and were able to take Liz with them. Older siblings didn’t have this opportunity.Growing Up as a Creative in the Theatre CommunityAs a young child, she and her friends would write their own plays, practice, and put them on with their parents for the audience. Her parents wanted her to develop their interests, and she attended theatre classes. During one summer, she was in three different shows. An adult male member of the cast, in his late teens, drove her home from a performance at the age of 13 and started the cycle of abuse.Self-Blame for Her Sexual AbuseLiz remembers the episodes, and while she did tell her abuser to stop, some opportunities were given to him in the future that allowed him to continue the cycle of abuse. At 13, she was conflicted as there were many details associated with her relationship with her abuser. Ultimately, she blamed herself for her abuse.Growing up in a religious perspective, she was told: “that we have needs and desires, and we want to act on those, making it hard to keep the law of chastity.” With this in mind, she spun the scenario that her abuser wanted her so much “that he must be in love with me and it’s too hard for him to control himself, and that’s why when I say, ‘No!’ he doesn’t listen.”As an adult, Liz still feels that she can’t tell people that they are making her feel uncomfortable, which bothers her tremendously. “The verbalization of standing up for myself was a tough part for me in my story.”Links and ResourcesVisit Liz on the webJoin Me on Speak Loud PlatformSpeak Loud Podcast on the webSpread the message of Speak Loudly Podcast and share this episode with a friend!***Disclaimer: All content found on Speak Loud Podcast, including text, images, audio, or other formats were created for informational purposes only. Today, I’d like to introduce you to Mrs. Michelle Binion. A certified mental health clinician, CMHC, who specializes in treating complex trauma and attachment disorders. She is a survivor of physical abuse from her childhood. How Michelle became Interested in Her CareerKnowing she wanted to be a therapist since the age of 14, Michelle attended college with her senior thesis on Reactive Attachment Disorder in Youth. She wanted to find out how to heal children with this disorder. During her graduate work, a guest professor spoke about attachment. Michelle, being interested in this subject, talked with the professor after class. He suggested that she study trauma within the field of psychologyWhat is Reactive Attachment Disorder?“This is a diagnosis we see a lot in children that have been in the foster care system or have been adopted.” In these children, what clinicians see is the inability to emotionally attach, along with an angry, reactive behavior that happens with people who experience significant lack and neglect. “It’s like the brain has adapted to the lack of emotional attachment, and it’s so terrifying for them to think about attachment that can’t.” The Difference Between PTSD and Complex Trauma“PTSD is like an earthquake where you have a scary event that happened. You could have intrusive thoughts or flashbacks.” Complex trauma is the chronic ongoing list of continual traumatic events. Often, this results from a continual chaotic environment, chronic abuse, and/or neglect, which can include the constant exchange of caregivers. How Michelle has Decided to Break the Cycle of AbuseWith a three and a one-year-old, Michelle is aware that her upbringing in an abusive and neglectful environment could recycle her children's raising. To avoid perpetuating this cycle, she has worked through her own story. "I manage my caseload differently, so I don't have as many clients that could trigger me."She advises other parents who have experienced trauma in their own childhood to listen to your kids. Learn attunement with your children and be aware not to repeat the behaviors of your parents.Links and ResourcesEpisode 005 Speak Loud PodcastLearn about Michelle with her practice at the Center for Christian TherapyJoin Me on Speak Loud PlatformSpeak Loud Podcast on the webSpread the message of Speak Loudly Podcast andshare this episode with a friend!***Disclaimer: All content found on Speak Loud Podcast, including text, images, audio, or other formats were created for informational purposes only.
