In this episode of Proven Health Alternatives, I sit down with Dr. Allison Siebecker, one of the leading voices in Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). If you're looking for the best way to test, treat, and manage SIBO, this episode has the answers. We break down common misconceptions, the different gas types involved (yes, that matters!), and how SIBO connects to IBS and other gut issues. Dr. Siebecker also shares the best testing methods, including the lactulose breath test, and why one-size-fits-all treatments just don't work. Plus, we get into diet strategies like FODMAP and elemental diets, the probiotic debate, and how to actually prevent relapse. If you've struggled with gut issues—or treat patients who do—you won't want to miss this one! Key Takeaways: The Complex Nature of SIBO: SIBO involves an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine and can lead to symptoms similar to those of IBS, such as bloating, diarrhea, and more. Testing and Diagnosis: The lactulose breath test is emphasized as an effective method for diagnosing SIBO, and it's important to distinguish between the different types of gas overproduction involved. Treatment Approaches: Treatment for SIBO includes pharmaceuticals, herbal antibiotics, and dietary changes like the elemental diet. Success rates are high, but multiple rounds may be required. Preventive Measures and Relapse: Using prokinetics and maintaining a suitable low-carbohydrate diet can help prevent SIBO relapse, which is common in chronic cases. The Role of Probiotics: While probiotics can aid in treatment, their appropriateness depends on individual tolerance and phasing during SIBO management. More About Dr. Allison Siebecker: Dr. Allison Siebecker has been at the forefront of SIBO research and treatment since 2011, helping thousands worldwide with her integrative protocols. She's an award-winning author, educator, and practitioner, known for breaking down complex gut health topics into practical, effective strategies. She's also the 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient from the Gastro ANP, has been teaching Advanced Gastroenterology at NUNM since 2013, and co-founded the SIBO Center for Digestive Health. In this episode, Dr. Danielle discusses the steps involved in becoming a naturopathic doctor and provides information on accredited naturopathic medical schools. She emphasizes the importance of choosing an accredited school for credibility and legal recognition as a naturopathic doctor. Dr. Danielle also shares her personal experience in choosing a school and highlights the need to visit the school and interact with current students to get a feel for the program and student body. She mentions the option of residency after medical school and suggests alternative programs for healthcare providers interested in incorporating naturopathic principles into their practice. Takeaways To become a naturopathic doctor, it is important to choose an accredited naturopathic medical school. There are only four accredited naturopathic medical schools in the United States: Bastyr, NUNM, Sonoran, and NUHS. Undergraduate majors can vary, but completing the pre-med requirements is necessary. Medical school is a four to five-year program that includes science-focused classes in the first two years and a variety of clinical rotations in the later years. Residency after medical school is optional but can provide additional training and experience. Alternative programs like the Institute of Functional Medicine and the Institute for Integrated Nutrition can be options for healthcare providers interested in naturopathic principles. Did you know that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common type of liver disease? (And it absolutely is tied to skin issues too!) Fatty liver disease, also now referred to as metabolic dysfunction-associated liver disease, is the result of inflammation. It is associated with other common health issues like high lipids, high blood sugar, metabolic syndrome, and autoimmune disease. The good news is, in the early stages, when you're just starting to show fatty liver signs (like elevated liver enzymes), fatty liver is reversible! To share more valuable information about this liver disease, like fatty liver symptoms, how to get diagnosed, NAFLD treatment, and fatty liver diet, I'm joined by Dr. Ilana Gurevich. Dr. Gurevich is a board-certified naturopathic gastroenterologist and a fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Gastroenterology. She graduated from the in 2007 with her doctorate in naturopathic medicine from NUNM. She runs a gastroenterology-focused private practice in Portland, Oregon specializing in treating IBD, IBS, SIBO and other functional GI disorders. She is an educator who lectures about both conventional and natural treatments for gastrointestinal conditions, and is a mentor for physicians, helping them navigate complex GI disorders. Dr. Gurevich was nominated as a Top Doc by Portland Monthly in 2014, 2016, 2020, and 2021. She was the recipient of the 2022 Borborygmus Lifetime Achievement Award by the GastroANP. In This Episode: What is liver disease? Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): The most common liver disease How inflammation causes non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (aka metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease) How does high blood sugar affect liver cells? Nervous system-liver connection What causes fatty liver disease symptoms? Microbiome-liver health connection How is fatty liver disease diagnosed? Who is at risk for fatty liver disease? Fatty liver treatment options Is drinking coffee or coffee enemas helpful for liver health? Quotes “The liver…is the largest organ of detoxification, second to the skin. And because of that, everything is running through it, including all of the pesticides, toxins, immunological factors and everything else that we're exposed to on a daily basis. And in today's day and age, it's very, very easy to make that load on the liver too heavy. When that load on the liver is too heavy, you can get progressive liver disease.” “Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the most common liver disease that's out there. And it is associated with a lot of other diseases…It is associated with high lipids. It is associated with high blood sugars and metabolic syndrome…There are factors of liver disease that tie into almost every autoimmune disease, and the sicker you are, the more weight that liver is carrying, so the more likely you are to have an inflammatory process of the liver.” Links Find Dr. Gurevich online Research: https://elifesciences.org/articles/44116 Turd Nerds Podcast Healthy Skin Show ep. 282: Metabolic Dysfunction Disaster Fueling Skin Problems w/ Dr. Robert Lustig Healthy Skin Show ep. 047: Will A Liver Detox Help My Skin Rashes? Struggling with SIBO symptoms like bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, gas, and diarrhea, can be very frustrating. SIBO (short for small intestine bacterial overgrowth) is basically what it sounds like: Bacteria overgrow in the small intestine leading to many symptoms that impact the gut and other body systems. The presence of SIBO can trigger IBS, SIBO malabsorption (where you don't absorb the nutrients from food and end up with nutrient deficiencies), and even anxiety due to inflammation. And SIBO symptoms can also include skin problems! For example, there's an established SIBO-rosacea connection: Research has shown that SIBO is present in about 77% of people with rosacea! Additionally, SIBO is found in about 20% of psoriasis cases. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Allison Siebecker to answer all of your burning SIBO questions. We'll discuss common (and uncommon!) SIBO symptoms, SIBO test options, as well as how to treat SIBO (the conventional vs alternative options). Dr. Allison Siebecker, ND, LAc, MSOM has been specializing in small intestine bacterial overgrowth (aka SIBO) since 2011. She is the 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient from the GastroANP, has been teaching Advanced Gastroenterology at NUNM since 2013, and is an award-winning author. Dr. Siebecker was the co-founder and former Medical Director of the SIBO Center for Digestive Health at NUNM. Her integrative SIBO protocols have helped thousands worldwide. In This Episode: What is small intestine bacterial overgrowth (aka SIBO)? SIBO symptoms + surprising triggers SIBO-rosacea connection + (other skin rash connections) SIBO breath test vs other testing options How to treat SIBO (conventional vs alternative SIBO treatment options) Myth busting: Can you stop SIBO with a SIBO diet (low FODMAP)? Nervous system dysregulation + SIBO Quotes “Our small intestine is where we digest and then absorb our nutrients from our food. And when there's too many bacteria overgrown there or methanogens, they interfere with that process. It can cause malnutrition and then all sorts of other problems. Skin problems can be one of them.” “What are those symptoms [of SIBO]? Abdominal bloating, that could come with discomfort, general pain or discomfort in the abdomen, constipation or diarrhea or a mixture of the two. So those are our core symptoms. There can also be nausea, a feeling that food is sitting in the stomach and won't move down. There could be gas exiting, so burping or excessive flatulence.” Links Find Dr. Siebecker online Healthy Skin Show ep. 018: SIBO-Skin Rash Connection w/ Amy Hollenkamp Healthy Skin Show ep. 019: SIBO-Rosacea Connection w/ Dr. Leonard Weinstock SIBO Recovery Roadmap® Course For practitioners: The SIBO Pro Mini Course (SAVE $220) For practitioners: Check Your Blindspots and Become A Better SIBO Practitioner book Nerva App (for IBS symptoms)

Dr. Nirala Jacobi interviews Dr. Mark Davis about helminth therapy and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in the treatment of various conditions. Helminth therapy involves using tiny worm-like organisms called helminths as medicine for humans. Dr. Davis explains that there are four helminths that have been found to be safe and beneficial for humans. These helminths can be used to treat conditions such as multiple sclerosis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and autism spectrum disorder. FMT, on the other hand, involves transplanting fecal microbiota from a healthy donor into the gut of a patient. FMT has been found to be effective in treating conditions such as Clostridium difficile (C. diff) colitis and hepatic encephalopathy. Dr. Davis also discusses his new ventures in Panama, where he plans to offer helminth therapy and FMT in a hospital setting. He also mentions his work on vaginal microbiota transplantation for women's health conditions. Dr Mark Davis, ND is a 2011 graduate of NUNM, and a fellow of the American College of Naturopathic Gastroenterology. He's on the board of directors of the Gastroenterology Association of Naturopathic Physicians, and the editorial board of the Natural Medicine Journal. Dr. Davis teaches the naturopathic gastroenterology course at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, and he has focused on patients with IBD since 2016.

In this Shop Talk segment I explain how to balance the pulses using acupuncture. We need to return the pulses back to that healthy baseline so that the person can get on with the business of their life .In this talk I'll take you through a basic assessment where we compare the relative strength or size of the pulse to determine excess and deficiency and then use acupressure to key points to determine the effect on the pulse..This can be used as a simple standalone treatment, or as a way to begin a longer treatment. To learn more from Brenda, contact her at: hoodcmcourses@gmail.comBrenda HoodI was born and raised in Peace River, Canada. Then wound up going to China to study Chinese medicine after becoming disillusioned with a degree in psychology. I spent over twenty years there being completely enamored with the medicine and acquiring a few degrees. After returning to North America spent some years teaching Foundations of CM and other basic courses at NUNM. I'm back up in Canada now working on a foundations book to explain the energetic and philosophical bases of the medicine with an eye to using the classics and historical texts as my sources.Clinically, I started out using the TCM system, but I couldn't really get it to work like I thought it should. I stepped out of CM academia and spent a lot of time with “folk practitioners” and cultivators. There are a lot of hidden gems in China though living there and speaking/reading the language was definitely required. The study of CM is endless. About Dr. Adam Dombrowski, Dr. Krista Imre and Nature Medicine Clinic: Dr. Krista and Dr. Adam are Naturopathic Doctors. They help people to reverse chronic disease by taking control of their health. Having worked with thousands of patients to do exactly this, the inspiration that comes from seeing so many lives completely transform continues to fuel their mission. Dr. Krista grew up surrounded by the beauty and power of nature in a town close to Yosemite National Park in California. Being raised in a family full of conventional doctors that engendered this disappointing mindset all created the realization that something important was missing from the current medical system- hope. Naturopathic medicine became the natural choice for Dr Krista after she struggled with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome at a young age and was told all she could do was take medications for life. Dr. Adam spent several months in China on a medical internship and was blown away by the contrasting healthcare crisis in the US, i.e. people are significantly more sick here than in other comparable countries. This national crisis was also evidenced by the lack of improvement in his own father's condition, after he was debilitated by chronic disease following the NYC 9/11 disaster. Realizing that health is predominantly determined by our lifestyle choices rather than just pills and procedures, Dr. Adam pursued an approach that empowers people to thrive rather than leaving them stuck in the “hamster wheel” of conventional medicine. Now husband and wife, these two doctors met during their training at the oldest accredited naturopathic medical university in North America, NUNM. Their additional training in Acupuncture & Ayurvedic Medicine complements their holistic perspective on wellness. Together they have contributed to the holistic medicine research base by publishing two case reports in an integrative medicine journal. Their biomedical training helps empower their practice members to take control of their own healing, while simultaneously being fluent in conventional medicine. This melange of natural therapies is transferred to their practice members so they feel less “stuck” and more “free” to live the life that they desperately want to live. That is why our clinic uses life-altering, educational programs to improve your health by creating stronger foundations for health. We optimize your health so that you can feel less “stuck” and more “free” to live your life. I also use a large variety of natural therapies within naturopathic medicine and acupuncture to treat a variety of chronic and acute conditions. All recommendations are customized to the individual with a commitment to the ability of your body to heal itself. Nature's medicine is medicine that designed for human beings by nature. It is in our DNA. By working with the inherent healing ability of your body, natural medicine tends to have far fewer side effects relative to conventional therapies. Natural medicine is largely substantiated with clinical research and clinical experience to effectively improve many chronic and acute conditions.
In this episode of our podcast, we discuss how balanced insulin & blood sugar are integral to our overall vitality and longevity. A healthy insulin response affects all of our body systems: from healthy aging to healthy cells, hormones, immune and nervous systems, to mental wellness and metabolism. We heard from Eliza Boné as she shared her story of hope and healing. Don't miss: Nutritional balance has an integral impact on your health. Pancreas regulates blood sugar levels when you eat, while the liver is where we store sugar for later use. When we use essential oils for aromatherapy, we activate our limbic system, which is in charge of our emotions, memories, and many of our autonomic functions, such as our breathing, respiratory rate, and blood pressure. Diabetes patients are unable to metabolize cortisol (the stress hormone) effectively because they are unable to metabolize it in the correct manner, which disrupts the regulation of the stress hormone. Eliza provides personalized recommendations for essential oil roller bottles for topical use versus capsules for internal use based on your unique needs. Dr. Josie mentioned that the long-term consequences of low blood sugar are just as harmful as those of high blood sugar. You asked we listened! Eliza created an additional video where she outlines her protocol and offers a deep dive into natural blood sugar regulation. Candice sits down with naturopathic physician, Samantha LeVine to discuss individualized care, particularly as it pertains to women's health. Dr. Sam tells us about the moment when, at age seven, she realized she would become a doctor specializing in women's health. She describes naturopathic medicine, what differentiates it from a conventional practice, and how regulations vary from state to state. Candice shares how Dr. Sam's approach was a real game-changer for her own personal journey of health and self-care. She shares about the mysterious stroke-like symptoms she experienced in her twenties and early thirties, and how most medical professionals she encountered failed to take her mental health into account when suggesting diagnosis and treatment. The two discuss other examples of how emotional landscapes can impact physical health, and Dr. Sam emphasizes how essential it is to be physiologically informed when it comes to emotional challenges. Dr. Sam offers a fascinating explanation of how sugar, both positively and negatively, impacts the brain and whether or not there is a difference between medicine and medication. The episode wraps up with some very practical guidance regarding peri-menopausal and post-menopausal considerations. Dr. Sam tells us how to better prepare the body for this 'change of life' using proper testing and then talks candidly about whether or not hormone replacement therapy is a good idea.Samantha LeVine, ND is a board-certified naturopathic physician practicing general care in Portland, OR. She's been in private practice for nearly 20 years and loves to support community members of all ages. Specialties include women's health and hormones, thyroid support, nutrition, gastrointestinal complaints, mood imbalance, sleep support etc. Doc Sam trained in midwifery in graduate school (NCNM, now called NUNM) and loves to really treat the whole person in her approach to healing. In addition to being a small business owner, Doc Sam enjoys time with her two children, ages 13 and 21, gardening, reading, hiking, dancing, and cooking.docerenaturopathicwellness.com
Slowing aging , preserving memory, and preserving energy are big topics of concern in medicine and health care. Over the past 10 years research and development has show a special interest in how to modify Sirtuin-1 as a protein for longevity and slowing the disease process. A cofactor of Sirtuin-1 named Nicotinamide Adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is of particular interest. NAD seems to be depleted as we age and thus turning down Sirtuin-1 activity. This means accelerated aging. The study of how to modify NAD is blossoming much thanks to the work of David Sinclair, Phd. And, supplements, dietary modifications , and lifestyle moves are being studies and marketed to modify this pathway. I have been hesitant to jump into this world due the hype; so I brought back an expert in this space Dr. Chris Meletis to help translate the science for practical application. We discuss the different forms of NAD precursors such as Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) and Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) as well discuss things like fasting, ketogenic diets, and exercise. About Dr. Meletis: Dr. Chris D. Meletis is an educator, international author and lecturer. His personal mission is “Changing World's Health One Person at a Time.” He believes that when people become educated about their body, that is the moment when change begins. He has authored over a dozen books and in excess of 200 national scientific articles in such journals and magazines as Natural Health, Alternative and Complementary Therapies, Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients, Life Extension, Natural Pharmacy and the Journal of Restorative Medicine Dr. Meletis served as Dean of Naturopathic Medicine and Chief Medical Officer for 7 years at NUNM, the oldest naturopathic medical school in North America. He has received numerous awards including, Physician of the Year by the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians; Excellence Award for his work in treating and advocating for the medically underserved; and most recently a NUNM Hall of Fall award at the State Association's annual banquet. His passion for helping the underprivileged drove him to spearhead the creation of 16 free natural medicine healthcare clinics in the Portland metropolitan area of Oregon. He is a medical consultant for Tru Niagen among other companies and is considered an expert in mitochondrial health and organic acid testing. EPISODE 10 It's a milestone y'all! Ten episodes seems small but feels huge for me! This weeks show dives deep into "meta" territory with Katerina Baratta, LAc, MSOM. We talk about mindfulness and a variety of its applications to everyday life. Did you know, doing the dishes can be an act of mindfulness? Katerina is a mind-body-spirit health practitioner, licensed acupuncturist, writer, and teacher. Through a unique combination of holistic nutrition, positive psychology and wellness coaching —as well as transformative bodywork, acupuncture, medicinal herbs, yoga, and qigong— Katerina helps women adopt a nourishment mindset so they can stop the diet-binge cycle and self-sabotage, and transform more than just their body. She also teaches a course at NUNM on personalized and seasonal health and wellness, and leads workshops around the globe. Aside from MindBodyGreen, Katerina's work has been featured in The Huffington post, Yoganonymous, WuHaus, BIWA, and her website has been recognized as a top natural health website by the Institute for the Psychology of Eating. Turning Season: News & Conversations on Our Adventure Toward a Life-Sustaining Society
My fellow acupuncturist, dreamworker, and NUNM grad Joseph Fiala joins me to talk about dreamwork in his clinical practice, in his personal life, and in nurturing the thoughts we choose to grow in the gardens of our minds. I loved hearing his enthusiasm and wise insights, and I'm guessing you will too.Click Play to listen now.I met Joseph when we were both students at the National University of Natural Medicine. I remember his wife Emaline Gray telling me about a dream she'd had of an ear over Frankfort, Kentucky, and the name "The Light Clinic." More than 10 years later ("the algorithm" doing what it does best), Instagram suggested to me that I follow an account called "The Light Clinic." I recognized the name from Emaline's dream and, sure enough, the account was for the integrative health clinic in Frankfort that she and Joseph had founded just after graduating. Even better, I discovered that dreamwork has become a significant part of their practices, too.In this episode, Joseph and I talk about exploring dreams with our patients. Both of us engage in dreamwork during acupuncture appointments, often while doing "hands-on" work like CranioSacral Therapy. You'll also hear us talk about:- a big dream that connected Joseph's dreamwork training program, his Chinese Medicine practice, and his shift into more groundedness and embodiment- dreamwork as a transformational tool that complements what we practice with acupuncture and herbal medicine- "following" a dream in the physical body- using a Qigong practice of shaking to move the emotions that arise in dreams, and to help unwind long-held patterns- how I've seen Classical Chinese Medicine symbols of herbal formulas and the Five Elements in dreams- the importance of "ritual," or bringing the dream into the physical, external world by acting on it somehow (with an example dream from a friend, who acted on her dream by riding in an elevator...)- and the potency of pairing dreamwork with one more of Joseph's passions: thought training to intentionally cultivate the thoughts that support the way we want to feelClick Play to listen -- and then I'd love to hear from you.Any dreams come to mind? Have you ever felt a dream move through your body? What do you think about the idea that dreams help us recognize our complexes, and then we can take other actions to shift them? I'm discussing the dark side of detox with Dr. Greg Nigh, ND. Dr. Nigh is an expert on sulfur and what happens when your body doesn't respond well to this crucial nutrient. Many healthy foods like cruciferous vegetables, eggs, garlic, and onions are high in sulfur and play a crucial role in popular diets like Paleo, Keto, and Plant-based. Dr. Nigh and I discuss the signs, symptoms, and science behind sulfur sensitivity along with ways to help you recover from excess exposure. --------------------------------------------------------------- Get The FREE Holistic Nootropics Supplement Buying Guide @ HolisticNootropics.com ------------------------------------------------------------------
This episode is a little different from the previous ones in that I'm talking with an acupuncturist rather than a Veterinarian. Eric Grey is a good friend who is an experienced Classical Chinese Medicine practitioner. In addition to the things we talk about on the podcast, Eric has lectured to veterinarians both at the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association Conference as well as the Midwest Veterinary Conference. When I started practicing holistic veterinary medicine and learning different modalities, I saw that the culture was for practitioners to learn a multitude of modalities to have a full range of things to offer a patient. At least in my case, it sometimes seems like a juggling act to balance keeping current in multiple modalities so that I can offer my patients the best care possible. Eric's recent decision to limit his practice was intriguing to me, so I was able to arrange for us to talk about that decision in the context of his professional life to date. Eric Grey, MSOM is an Acupuncturist in Astoria, Oregon. He has a BS in both Biology and Philosophy from Oregon State University. He got his MSOM from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon in 2009. He and his wife and business partner Amanda Barp founded the Watershed Wellness Clinic in the Ladd's Addition neighborhood of Portland, Oregon in 2009. Eric also served as Adjunct Faculty at NUNM. He continued his studies including an herbal discipleship and clinical training with Heiner Fruehof, PhD and is a Diplomat of Canonical Chinese Medicine from the Institute of Classics in East Asian Medicine. While still a student at NUNM, Eric founded the website Deepest Health, which started as a blog about his experiences as a Classical Chinese Medicine student, but now has evolved into not only a blog about his experiences as a practice owner, but also an Educational Center offering short online courses in topics related to Classical Chinese Medicine and the business of acupuncture. After building Watershed Wellness to include multiple practitioners, Eric and Amanda decided to relocate to Astoria, Oregon in 2016. They started Watershed Wellness Astoria while continuing to commute to Portland part-time to practice. In 2018 they closed the doors in Portland and have devoted their energy to Astoria full-time. Join me for this conversation with Eric as we talk about founding two clinics, running an online business, and the thought process behind his most recent decision to stop practicing acupuncture in order to limit his practice to herbal medicine. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, so of course, we need to look at one of the best ways to assess one’s risk: DUTCH Testing! I’m joined by DUTCH Testing Medical Director, Dr. Carrie Jones, to talk about the DUTCH Test and how to naturally treat abnormal findings on the test. Three things you can do now to reduce your risk of breast cancer: Reduce your use of plastic. If you have to, opt for BPA-free plastic. Eat the skin of your vegetables. Take a supplement like DIM. About Dr. Carrie Jones Carrie Jones is a naturopath and an internationally recognized speaker, consultant, and educator on the topic of women's health and hormones. Dr. Jones graduated from the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM) in Portland, Oregon where she also completed a 2-year residency in women's health, hormones, and endocrinology. Later, she graduated from Grand Canyon University's Master of Public Health program. Recently, Dr. Jones became board certified through the American Board of Naturopathic Endocrinology. She was adjunct faculty at NUNM for many years, teaching gynecology and advanced endocrinology/fertility. While in practice, Dr. Jones served as Medical Director for 2 large integrative clinics in Portland. She is currently the Medical Director for Precision Analytical Inc. Looking Into DUTCH Testing As the director of DUTCH Testing, one of the tests I use to detect poor estrogen metabolism in my patients, Carrie is the perfect person to have on and discuss it. She lets us know exactly what DUTCH testing is, how it’s done, and how it’s designed to detect poor estrogen metabolism. High estrogen levels can be one of the increased risk factors for breast cancer. The risk is even higher if you’ve gone through menopause and still have elevated levels of the hormone. Carrie takes us through some of the ways you can improve estrogen metabolism in your body. You’ve heard me talk about this supplement before, but I am a huge advocate for using DIM to contribute to positive breast health. There are so many benefits to taking a supplement full of cruciferous vegetables. However, Carrie explains why DIM is only useful if you have a phase one problem. In fact, she states that taking DIM with stage two or three problems could actually be detrimental to your health. Treating Phase Two and Three So how do you treat poor estrogen metabolism with phases two and three? Carrie walks us through the natural treatments, including foods and supplementation, to safely navigate this time. Something Carrie encourages is leaving the skin on your vegetables, especially carrots. Carrots are high in beta carotene, which is beneficial for us, all the time, but especially when we’re battling something like poor estrogen metabolism. Finally, Carrie talks us through what chemicals we need to remove from our homes, diets, and beauty routines. Chemicals can contribute to increased cancer risk, so removing them from your environment early is nothing but beneficial. What’s your favorite way to eat carrots? How have you already reduced your plastic use? Let me know in the comments on the episode page. Quotes “If I was to be concerned about any of the dials, it’s the four, for sure. The two/sixteen ratio, like you were saying, years ago people were really into it, has been largely debunked because now we know about four. And sixteen is estrogenic, meaning that little molecule sixteen can actually bind to estrogen receptors and, it’s not as strong as true estrogen and that’s why it’s helpful for bones. Menopausal women who have a higher sixteen maybe have better bone quality. Ultimately, what the big thing is, is it’s because it’s estrogenic that we have to look at the woman’s whole estrogen picture. Then when it comes to cancer, it’s that four hydroxy pathway that, if it gets out of hand, really causes DNA damage and we don’t want that.” [16:38] “DIM is helpful for that phase one, only. DIM is only helpful if you have a phase one problem. If you have a phase two or three problem, DIM will actually make you worse. You want to be very careful and you want to test to know.” [20:22] “You can, ladies, have estrogen issues because you have gut issues. It’s a recycle thing. So working on your gut health, cleaning up your gut health, improving constipation, etc will really help your estrogen.” [30:25] In This Episode What DUTCH testing is [5:00] How to reduce your estrogen to have the least cancer-causing risk [14:00] How the DIM supplement can benefit your breast health [19:30] How to take DIM safely [21:45] How to treat phases two and three of breast cancer [22:25] Why you should eat the whole carrot, skin and all [32:45] What chemicals should you remove from your life [33:50] Links & Resources Check out the full show notes for this episode here Learn More About Your Longevity Blueprint: The Course Learn more about the DUTCH Test Find Dr. Carrie Jones Online Follow Dr. Carrie Jones on Instagram Find Your Longevity Blueprint Online Follow Your Longevity Blueprint on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | LinkedIn Get your copy of the Your Longevity Blueprint book and claim your bonuses here Find Dr. Stephanie Gray and Your Longevity Blueprint online Follow Dr. Stephanie Gray on Facebook | Instagram | Youtube | Twitter | LinkedIn Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic Podcast Production by the team at Counterweight Creative Related Episodes Episode 20: Breast Cancer Conqueror Dr. Veronique Desaulniers Episode 17: Recovery from Breast Implant Illness with Sarah Phillipe Episode 19: How to Heal from Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain with Dr. Jessica Drummond

Dr. Russell Marz is one of the most fun and fascinating individuals I know. He has a long history of teaching clinical nutrition at NUNM, my alma mater. I was not fortunate enough to have him as a professor when I attended NUNM, though I am grateful to connect with him in the naturopathic community of Portland, Oregon where he continues to practice. Like any conversation with Dr. Marz, this was a fun one! It can be hard to keep this character tethered to this planet, but what would you expect with the last name of Marz!? We covered all sorts of things concerning the the environment and the most effective way to change the course of out trajectory as a species. We talked about how many of us are suffering from "second hand meat eating." We touched on the blue zones, another one of Dr. Marz's passions, as well as the "IDEAL DIET" for humans. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! Try a Free Sample of 180 Superfood Protein Blend: http://180nutrition.com.au/free-sample And this week our wonderful guest is Dr. Allison Siebecker. Now Allison has worked in the nutritional field since 1988, and is a 2005 graduate of the National University of Natural Medicine, where she got earned her doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine, and her Masters in Oriental Medicine. Boy, is Allison a wealth of information. I, again, biasedly, love this episode. This topic is actually a bit close to my heart, and after listening to what Allison had to say, today, I'll be going to get a SIBO Test. If you have no idea what SIBO is, don't worry about it. I still think it's a really relevant topic for us all, to at least be aware of, and especially if you're having symptoms of bloating, in the gut, all the time. Symptoms of IBS, and things like anxiety, as well, and depression, can even stem from SIBO, which is just fascinating. It is Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. [00:01:30] Anyway, we cover all areas today. We wanted to make this episode relevant for the listener, as well as maybe, the practitioner, that wants to learn more about SIBO, as well. I'm going to get a test and if you do fancy getting a test done, yourself, on SIBO, just drop us an email through 180, and we can help direct you in the right direction, if you choose to do so. And you probably will. [00:02:00] Anyway, the other thing I wanted to mention, as well: You might've heard me talking about giving away free samples of our 180 Superfood. Where you can just have a smoothie in the morning, get a complete natural protein, wholefood hit. Replaces poor meal choices, it's a really quick and convenient way of doing so, which we love. With the free samples, plus shipping, I'm trying something different today, so what I didn't realize, after podcasting for 4 and a half years, is that, if you're actually listening to this podcast right now, on your phone, you can actually go to where it's playing. Just below the play button, on the podcast app, there's a 'Show Notes' button. If you click that, you can, within 3 seconds, click the link that directs you to free samples, and, like I said, all you have to do is pay a small shipping and handling fee. If you want to try them, and you haven't yet, I suggest you do so. That is the easiest way to do it. Well there you go, eh. You learn something new every day. [00:02:30] Anyway, lets go over to Allison. I love this episode. Enjoy. Hi, this Guy, I'm joined with Stu, as always. Good morning, Stewart. Stu Ow' yah goin'? How are you? Guy And our lovely guest, today, is Dr. Allison Siebecker. Allison, welcome to the show. Dr. Allison Thank you. Guy Well, what a topic. This is a topic, we've not covered in depth before. I tell you what, I am pumped for this episode, today. I truly am. Dr. Allison (laughs) Guy [00:03:00] Now, we ask a question to every guest that comes on the show. That is, "If a complete stranger stopped you on the street, and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say?" Dr. Allison I'd probably say, "I'm a doctor." But you know, that's a very simple answer, but these days I do a lot more teaching. So maybe I should say I'm a teacher. Or maybe I should say, "I'm a doctor that teaches."
