One word comes to mind to describe Trauma-Informed Care: that word is…compassion. With Latin origins, compassion means to suffer with (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). Compassion upgrades empathy to include, not only the sharing of the emotional experience but also a desire to assist with alleviating the distress (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). Trauma-informed behavioral health practitioners operate from a perspective of understanding (i.e. empathy) and intentional responsiveness (i.e. compassion); this approach focuses on the physical, psychological, and emotional needs of the survivor and the community (SAMHSA, 2014). Connect with me --> https://drmatmonharrell.bio.link/Written by Dr. Matmon HarrellReferencesMerriam-Webster. Here's some information about Nicole, in case some of you are new to Sexual Assault Survivor Stories. Nicole is a frequent guest on this show, and I want you to know some information about her. This information is published by Force Science, Nicole's employer, on their website: “Nicole Florisi, PsyD Candidate, LEO Director of Curriculum & Content Development, Staff Instructor Force Science Biography Nicole has extensive experience as an educator, police officer, and therapist. She provides front-line instruction in de-escalation, crisis communications, and force encounters investigations. With over 25 years of experience, she has held positions including communications specialist, patrol officer, patrol sergeant, investigator, and acting chief. She has held previous roles as a Law Enforcement Subject Matter Expert at and as the Executive Director for the Verde Valley Sanctuary; a shelter dedicated to providing services for victims of sex trafficking, sexual violence, and domestic violence. Nicole is currently working on her doctorate in clinical psychology. She holds two post-master's degrees; one in Human Factors Psychology and one in Trauma Counseling; an M.S. in Professional Counseling; and a B.S. in Public Safety Administration and Emergency Management.” Just over a month ago, Nicole Florisi reached out to me to let me know that there was a not-so-great situation that had recently come to her attention regarding a domestic violence/sex assault shelter. She told me that several residents of this particular shelter had reached out to inform her that there were some pretty extreme reports of inappropriate behavior and abuses perpetrated on shelter clientele at the hands of some of the shelter staff. Before I go any further, I want to emphasize that these reports were not initiated by Nicole, but rather by clientele residents of the shelter referenced in the reports. At the time Nicole reached out to me in July, we were not releasing the name of the shelter. But since the time of that recording, reports of the abuses and poor living conditions at the shelter were made public through an article published by the local newspaper, the . The shelter at the center of the reports is Verde Valley Sanctuary (VVS), which is the shelter at which Nicole had been the Executive Director. And the reason clientele of the shelter were reaching out to Nicole is because they know her, trust her, and thought that Nicole may be able to help. These reports had started coming to Nicole in the fall of 2023, and Nicole forwarded those reports, via email,  to the shelter administration and board of directors in October, 2023. Because Nicole did not receive any type of acknowledgement of her report from either the shelter or administration, she forwarded a second report to the Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence (ACESDV). The response that Nicole received from ACESDV, was that “ACESDV has visited the program and has not seen anything of concern.” But the reports of abuses and lack of services continued to come in from shelter clientele, and now were also being received by staff employees that had been terminated by the new Executive Director. Those same previous VVS personnel were forwarding some of the resident complaints to the newspaper, which in July 2024 published a story, “”. When Nicole reached out to me last month and told me about this entire situation, I was resolved to get her on SASS and discuss this situation; not to disparage Verde Valley Sanctuary, but to give an additional voice to the affected clientele residents, and to educate, discuss solutions, and talk about reporting options to my audience in case they are currently in a similar situation or find themselves in a shelter of any kind, anytime in the future. CURRENT SITUATION: Since it has been over a month since Nicole and I recorded this episode, I recently reached out to Nicole to let her know the episode was going to be published today (20 August 2024), and to ask her to provide me with any updates that may be available to keep you, my audience, appraised of the situation. Here is the update that Nicole sent to me: Hi Dave!  Here is an update so far: After the newspaper article came out, VVS responded to the claims with many false and misleading statements.  We are in the process of responding to this at this time.  The VVS Board President has been making untrue and disparaging remarks about me (and others who brought this to light) in emails to donors.  I do not know the status of my complaints to the state funders, as they are not required to report them to me.  Personnel from sister agencies have come forward to me after hearing about these claims, stating their clients have been telling me about how fearful they were of staff and of their mistreatment, and they have a lot of concerns about working with VVS at this time.  I had hoped we would have something more positive for you by the time this show aired, but we are still fighting the lies, manipulation, and corruption on behalf of the clients. No one should ever be victimized or re-victimized by those who are supposed to help.  Talk to you again soon, hopefully with better news. -Nicole  I hope that this episode provides some enlightenment and valuable educational information to all of my listeners, whatever situation you find yourself in. If you're a victim or survivor of rape, sexual assault, or any form of interpersonal violence and find yourself in circumstances that necessitate your need to utilize a shelter, of any kind, I hope this information is helpful. If you never need the services of a shelter but know someone who currently is in a shelter or may need a shelter in the future, please pass this episode on to them. Please hit the subscribe button on whatever podcast platform you found this show, and leave a review, if you would…it helps more than you know! Also, don't forget to do your part to help bring justice to victims and survivors of rape or sexual assault. A great way to do this is to Start By Believing! I am providing some website information, as well as links to the newspaper stories. In addition, you'll find my email address, as well as Nicole's, below. Nicole gave me permission to publish her email addresses and would welcome any inquiries for additional information or help for those who are in a similar situation. Please look at these sites, and pass them on to others who may find the information helpful:

Do you ever find fear rising up within your heart? Does the weight of uncertainty ever feel too heavy to handle? In the foster care community, uncertainty about how our “yes” may impact our family, our marriage, a child in foster care, another family, or even ourselves can throw us into fear and hesitation rather than trust and faith. I am so excited to welcome Jenn Hand for this conversation. Jenn founded Coming Alive Ministries in 2012 and has the honor of traveling around the world as a missionary and extending the invitation to come alive in Christ. She is an incredible example of someone who listens to God's direction! She has her Master's Degree in Trauma Counseling and is the author of five books. Jenn's most recent book is My Yes is on the Table: Moving From Fear to Faith. In this episode, Jenn shares about how saying “yes” is linked to surrender, what we can do with our fear, why stepping forward in faith doesn't always mean forever, and so much more. I really enjoyed this conversation, and am eager to kick off 2024 with this topic! Show Notes: https://theforgotteninitiative.org/jenn-hand-215/

During the first half of his career, Dr. Mike Deninger rose to a leadership position in the education of deaf youth as an administrator at Gallaudet University. However, in his 40s traumatic childhood memories triggered a mental health crisis and an extended period of recovery. In the years that followed, he chose a new path as a trauma therapist and trainer after earning a counseling degree and trainer certifications in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Ericksonian Hypnotherapy and Eye Movement Integration (EMI). His innovations in trauma treatment culminated in the 2021 publication of "Multichannel Eye Movement Integration: The Brain Science Path to Easy and Effective PTSD Treatment." MEMI is an expansion of the original Eye Movement Integration technique developed in 1989 by Steve and Connirae Andreas of NLP renown. MEMI is distinguished from other eye movement therapies, because of its simple but clear theoretical model, its brevity and its rapid results. It also affords greater protection for clients than other eye movement therapies. Dr. Mike is keenly aware of the renewal that's possible when one frees the mind, relaxes the will and allows the body's neurological systems to heal traumatic wounds. He is a sought-after public speaker and trainer, having made hundreds of presentations at national and international conferences. Today, I’d like to introduce you to Mrs. Michelle Binion. A certified mental health clinician, CMHC, who specializes in treating complex trauma and attachment disorders. She is a survivor of physical abuse from her childhood. How Michelle became Interested in Her CareerKnowing she wanted to be a therapist since the age of 14, Michelle attended college with her senior thesis on Reactive Attachment Disorder in Youth. She wanted to find out how to heal children with this disorder. During her graduate work, a guest professor spoke about attachment. Michelle, being interested in this subject, talked with the professor after class. He suggested that she study trauma within the field of psychologyWhat is Reactive Attachment Disorder?“This is a diagnosis we see a lot in children that have been in the foster care system or have been adopted.” In these children, what clinicians see is the inability to emotionally attach, along with an angry, reactive behavior that happens with people who experience significant lack and neglect. “It’s like the brain has adapted to the lack of emotional attachment, and it’s so terrifying for them to think about attachment that can’t.” The Difference Between PTSD and Complex Trauma“PTSD is like an earthquake where you have a scary event that happened. You could have intrusive thoughts or flashbacks.” Complex trauma is the chronic ongoing list of continual traumatic events. Often, this results from a continual chaotic environment, chronic abuse, and/or neglect, which can include the constant exchange of caregivers. How Michelle has Decided to Break the Cycle of AbuseWith a three and a one-year-old, Michelle is aware that her upbringing in an abusive and neglectful environment could recycle her children's raising. To avoid perpetuating this cycle, she has worked through her own story. "I manage my caseload differently, so I don't have as many clients that could trigger me."She advises other parents who have experienced trauma in their own childhood to listen to your kids. Learn attunement with your children and be aware not to repeat the behaviors of your parents.Links and ResourcesEpisode 005 Speak Loud PodcastLearn about Michelle with her practice at the Center for Christian TherapyJoin Me on Speak Loud PlatformSpeak Loud Podcast on the webSpread the message of Speak Loudly Podcast andshare this episode with a friend!***Disclaimer: All content found on Speak Loud Podcast, including text, images, audio, or other formats were created for informational purposes only. Libby Murdoch of Brain-based Trauma Counseling and Consulting explains some effective strategies for people who believe they are experiencing trauma.WHAT IS THE HAPPY BRAIN PODCAST?It's frank conversations between Loretta Breuning and real readers of her book, Habits of a Happy Brain: Retrain your brain to boost your serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin and endorphin levels. Do you wonder what stimulates your happy brain chemicals- dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, endorphin? Read the book and send your questions to Dr. Breuning on the contact form at the Inner Mammal Institute at: InnerMammalInstitute.org. You could be a guest on the show! The brain chemicals that make us feel good are inherited from earlier mammals. They evolved to do a job, not to make you feel good all the time. When you know the job each chemical does in the state of nature, your ups and downs make sense. More important, you can re-wire yourself to enjoy more of them in sustainable ways. But it's hard. Our brain is designed to reward you with happy chemicals for steps that promote survival. But our brain defines survival in a quirky way: it cares about the survival of your genes and it relies on neural pathways built in youth. To make things even harder, our brain habituates to the rewards it has so you always have to do more to get more happy chemicals. We are not born with survival skills like our animal ancestors. Each newborn human wires itself from its own early experience. Happy chemicals are like paving on your neural pathways, wiring you to repeat behaviors that made you feel good before. This is why our urgent motivations don't make sense to our verbal brain. It's not easy being mammal! When you know how your brain works, you can find healthier ways to enjoy happy chemicals and relieve unhappy chemicals. You can build new neural pathways by feeding your brain new experiences. But you have to design the new experiences carefully and repeat them a lot. The Inner Mammal Institute has free resources to help you make peace with your inner mammal: videos, blogs, infographics, and podcasts. Dr. Breuning's books illuminate the big picture and help you plot your course. You can find new ways to feel good, wherever you are right now.Music from Sonatina Soleil by W.M. Sharp. It all happened while we watched and gasped. Never before has the world been exposed to such vivid and comprehensive footage of a disaster of this magnitude.  The Japanese Tsunami is unique among all natural catastrophes in its power and exposure to the world. The images have been riveting but it is critical for us to remember they are indeed real. Real people were consumed. Real people were scrambling from those horrifying waters. Mothers, fathers, daughters, and sons spent their last moments in abject terror and were washed away in an instant. And because we watched it happen on computer and TV screens, it seems distant and unreal.  And the pain and suffering will continue. Radiation leaks, homelessness, disease, mourning, rebuilding and the fear of recurrence  - these will be the new normal in these coastal towns. It is right for events like these to completely rock our sensibilities. It is right to mourn, normal to question, and good for us to respond in tangible ways. The following articles and links are provided for us to enter in to this tragedy in a way that is honest, human, charitable and hopeful. In the end, comprehensive answers may elude us. But we can draw comfort from the God who holds our tears in a bottle (Ps. 56:8) and who was willfully crushed under the full weight of the world's sin and agony to deliver all of those who would trust Him into a place where tsunamis happen no more.Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Here is a moving excerpt from that prayer:O God, we humble ourselves under your holy majesty and repent. In a moment—in the twinkling of an eye—we too could be swept away. We are not more deserving of firm ground than our fellowmen in Japan. We too are flesh. We have bodies and homes and cars and family and precious places. We know that if we were treated according to our sins, who could stand? All of it would be gone in a moment. So in this dark hour we turn against our sins, not against you.And we cry for mercy for Japan. Mercy, Father. Not for what they or we deserve. But mercy.Have you not encouraged us in this? Have we not heard a hundred times in your Word the riches of your kindness, forbearance, and patience? Do you not a thousand times withhold your judgments, leading your rebellious world toward repentance? Yes, Lord. For your ways are not our ways, and your thoughts are not our thoughts. From The Boston Globe's The Big PictureNPR Interview w/ Piper regarding the 2004 Tsunami in the Indian Ocean This is a remarkably helpful piece and one I have gone to time and again when faced with the inevitable questions that accompany profound suffering.
