Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return behind the microphones for another episode of the Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football prodcast. The Helium Boys are back to break down USC's 48-0 thrashing of Utah State in the Trojans' home opener and discuss how the Trojans should be evaluated entering their bye week before a huge showdown with Michigan. The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill.' Shotgun raves about how good the Trojan defense has looked under the defensive staff of D'Anton Lynn, Eric Henderson, Matt Entz and Doug Belk after USC notched its first shutout in 13 years. Chris then takes the 'Two-Minute Drill' reins to talk about how important blowout victories are for the development of a program because of the opportunities it allows young players to get on the field, get their feet wet and get adjusted to the speed and physicality of the college game.. Chris and Shotgun then dive into their stocks in Stock Up/Stock Down looking at what players or elements were elevated or took a hit based on preseason expectations and the first game of the season. Both Helium Boys gush about the play of linebacker Eric Gentry, who seems to be having more fun than anyone in the stadium on game days and who is having a huge impact on a play-in, play-out basis. Shotgun goes as far as to put Gentry on All-American watch with the way he has shined through the first two games. There is plenty of stocks on the rise after a 48-0 win with Miller Moss, the running back group, young defenders and Lake McRee's surgeon all getting some love. The Stock Down section is much shorter as is to be expected, but one element Shotgun harps on is the receivers catching. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about the recent USC football press conference where head coach Lincoln Riley introduced the new members of the defensive coaching staff, defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn, defensive line coach Eric Henderson, linebackers coach Matt Entz and secondary coach Doug Belk. Coach Hyde starts off the show talking about how impressed he was with these new coaches and thought the press conference was the best one USC has had since Riley arrived at Troy. He loved how they were able to talk about their coaching philosophies as well as why they decided to leave good jobs and become a Trojan assistant coach. The coaches all showed great football knowledge and provided honest answers about the potential of the defense while embracing the tradition of the program. Coach Hyde felt it was enlightening to hear four coaches talk about their players and what they are going to try and accomplish. Riley made a statement when he went out and hired a very qualified group of coaches with great defensive minds. Coaches that are not afraid to address the issues they face and how they want to teach defensive fundamentals that will create a team defense, not a bunch of individuals. They also recognized that having a better defense isn't enough, they have to be able to give the offense looks in practice and make that side of the ball better as well. Coach Hyde feels that this defense will be fundamentally stronger with players understanding their assignments and the overall schemes better. They will be better coached with the proper knowledge to play and perform at high levels. Players will be taught and they will know what they need to do, enabling them to perform at full speed. Lynn said it best, explaining how he wants to teach the basics and start slow, allowing every player on the team to know what is expected of them. He also feels it is important to fit the scheme to the personnel and not the other way around. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about all of the latest news and notes surrounding the USC football program. It's mid December and the Trojan football team is gearing up for an important Holiday Bowl clash with Louisville from the ACC, but right now most of the focus is on the future with major changes happening to both the coaching staff and the roster. After head coach Lincoln Riley fired defensive coordinator Alex Grinch with two games left in the regular season, the writing was on the wall that this defensive staff was going to get a major makeover. Riley started off with the bold move to hire UCLA DC D'Anton Lynn to come down the 10 Freeway and take over as USC's defensive coordinator. Next Riley targeted Matt Entz, the head coach of North Dakota State who won multiple national championships at the FCS level, to coach linebackers. The latest move was to snag Houston defensive coordinator Doug Belk to join the staff and coach the Trojans secondary, taking the place of Donte Williams who is heading to Georgia for the same role. Coach Hyde gives his thoughts on all of these additions to the staff and if he feels these coaches could help make the Trojans a contender heading into the Big Ten next season. There have also been some major attrition on the roster heading into the bowl game with former five-stars like quarterback Malachi Nelson, running back Raleek Brown and cornerback Domani Jackson entering the NCAA Transfer Portal. With Nelson in the portal Riley needs to bring in a quarterback and right now the favorite in the clubhouse appears to be Will Howard from Kansas State, who took an official visit to USC over the weekend. The Trojans also added former Oregon State safety Akili Arnold and linebacker Easton Mascarenas-Arnold to the roster along with Vanderbilt defensive lineman Nate Clifton. Coach Hyde says they need to take the bowl game seriously to end the season on a high note, unlike what happened last year. With opt-outs and transfers, Hyde really wants team players out there who can put the team first so they can play like hell and get a much needed victory. He's also very happy for Miller Moss getting his first start. Moss has been loyal Trojan, he wants to be at USC and deserves this start.
