Epilog 2. How's Never 3. Celebrated pianist and MacPhail instructor Michael Cain spent about a decade working with Jack DeJohnette from '90-'99. He was nice enough to swing through Jazz88 and talk about his love of Jack DeJohnette. He also reflected on DeJohnette's larger importance in the music world at large.

Usually not a big fan of the Grammy Awards, but this year had some intriguing picks. From the feel good, straight ahead sounds of McBrides Big Band, to the probing improvisations of Carter, DeJohnette, Rubalcaba, and the creative explorations of Esperanza, these picks span a wide pallet of today's jazz. The posthumous awards to Chick and Lyle are also represented in this episode. How many drummers can you name who changed the whole conversation, just with their playing? Like, to the point that they became the North Star for the next generation or two? How many of those were also great bandleaders, and maybe even solid composers? It's a short list by anybody's count but one name you are probably already thinking of is Jack DeJohnette. Drummer Pheeroan Aklaff joins Mitch Goldman in putting DeJohnette in Deep Focus. Mitch, of course, has some dazzling live music from the archives that you've probably never heard. Playlists from all previous Sets of Jazz Gumbo are at: jazzgumbo.blogspot.ca Here's a Replay of an old Set that I've enjoyed myself recently, along with the original notes: The “Masterworks” of Set 18 begin with Return to Forever’s “500 Miles High”. Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Joe Farrell, Flora Purim and the Great percussionist Airto Moreira (whom I forgot to credit during the broadcast) deliver a piece that, 30+ years after first hearing it, continues to pull me completely into it’s richly textured soundscape. They flesh it out with solos that are technically brilliant and emotively lush. Also in this category of tunes, that create their own unique sonic pocket and then fill it up, are Horace Silver’s “Song for My Father” and DeJohnette’s “John McKee”, which features Pat Metheny and Herbie Hancock. I‘ll slide in Freddie Hubbard’s “Red Clay” right behind these other three; can’t deny what a compelling piece it is. I love presenting lesser known works by artists with a long list of hits – works that would be much better known if not for those hits. In this set, I point to Stevie Wonder’s “Flower Power”, to Santana’s “Guajira” and to Masekela’s “In the Market Place”, all favorites of mine. Artists I’m presenting on Jazz Gumbo for the first time include dj Cheb i Sabbah, who does a wonderful amalgam of traditional Indian music with Club music and Electronica. There’s also the Jazz Passengers, who combine the zany and the funky with straight ahead, driving numbers, reminiscent of Frank Zappa or George Duke. Then There’s Angie Stone, whose duet with Calvin Richardson is a sweet, soul throwback. And finally, Buddy Miles delivers a big, brassy and rollicking tribute to 60’s soul singer “Joe Tex”, to close things out. Thrive! Kirby Obsidian

An introduction to Farah DeJohnette Whole Horsemanship and how to Liberate your Horsemanship
In this episode I speak with Farah DeJohnette. Farah runs a horse property in North Brookfield Massachusetts where she teaches people about Holistic or Whole Horsemanship, where it takes a village to keep your horse happy and healthy and everyone is as important as the next including nutrition, dental, body work and training methods.Farah is doing an amazing job educating people on all aspects of keeping your horse happy and healthy, but the most important thing we must all begin with, is listening to your horse.I recorded this at 5am my time so if you are wearing headphones you may hear the Kookaburras waking up and the butcher birds making their morning song, you may even hear my dog snoring in there somewhere. This is a long one, so I won’t take up too much of your time on the intro, I’ll let you settle in and enjoy the ride.To connect with Farah please use the following links.Website-https://fdhorsemanship.comFacebook-Farah DeJohnette HorsemanshipInstagram-#fdhorsemanshipYoutube-fdh channel

Playlists for all past Sets of Jazz Gumbo will be found at jazzgumbo.blogspot.ca During the live Set, I neglected to mention that the DeJohnette piece features Herbie Hancock as well as Pat Metheny. (Sometimes it seems that Hancock is featured on half the numbers I play, he’s been a guest artist to so many of his colleagues over the decades) Essentially, this is a trio album, and DeJohnette and Metheny co-produced. I can’t help but wonder sometimes, why an album is attributed to one artist instead of another. In this case, DeJohnette and Metheny each wrote three tunes, and they co-wrote the seventh. And in my opinion, the best of them, including “Dancing”, are Metheny’s. Another curious example is “Desafinado”, a huge hit that’s been covered by dozens of artists. It, and almost all the other music on the album, including the even more massive hit, “The Girl from Ipanema”, were composed by Jobim. But the listing above is no mistake. The album is titled “Getz / Gilberto”, while Jobim is ‘featured’. Even more egregiously, Astrud Gilberto, the female voice to her husband’s on “Ipanema”, isn’t properly credited at all, only mentioned in passing in the liner notes. In fairness, she only sang on the one tune, and this was in fact her first ever recording, and it launched a career. A third variety of missing attribution was completely the norm in the 60’s and 70’s. Pop, Rock and Soul groups often failed to list the names of the group’s members. So the name Jessica Cleaves is nowhere to be found in the credits or listings of The Friends of Distinction album (nor those of her male colleagues, Harry Elston and Floyd Butler) though you will find the names of producers, arrangers, technicians, album artists and the guy who wrote the liner notes. Kind of odd, isn’t it? Enjoy the beautiful music, friends! Thrive! Kirby Obsidian

This was the debut of a brand new band formed by drummer/pianist/composer Jack DeJohnette and it reflected his multi-direction approach to the music. This was the first band that DeJohnette led that garnered not only recognition from the fans but by the critics as well. Many of DeJohnette's earlier attempts at bandleading seemed too scattered and had no unifying concepts. This band, although eclectic did have a sense of direction and purpose. It is multi-dimensional and reflects many concepts but is held together and cohesive. The band is called "Special Edition" and this recording is the first and perhaps the best. The two horns are tenor saxophonist/bass clarinetist, David Murray and on alto saxophone, one of the great individual voices was ("Black Arthur") Arthur Blythe. The versatile and flexible bassist is Peter Warren. DeJohnette's drums prod and shape the music and three of his unique compositions are heard. The other two tunes of the five on this disc are by John Coltrane and they are the beautiful "Central Park West" and the exotic "India". All in all, "Special Edition" was a great band and this album which was issued on ECM was one of it's most important statements.
Acclaimed drummer and composer Jack DeJohnette is a true master of rhythm. As one of the last distinct voices to emerge from the golden era of improvisational music, DeJohnette is perhaps at the peak of his powers in 2015. His career has spanned through the ensembles of Miles Davis, Charles Lloyd, Bill Evans, Jackie McLean, […]

Jack DeJohnette is one of the most extraordinary musicians to come along in the last 45 or so years. Jack was born in Chicago and came to New York in 1964 as an accomplished drummer and pianist. He was discovered by the great alto saxophone master Jackie Mclean and then went on to work with Charles Lloyd, Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Bill Evans, Freddie Hubbard and countless others. Jack and pianist Keith Jarrett worked with Charles Lloyd and their musical bond has remained to this day as the formidable trio of Jarrett, bassist Gary Peacock and DeJohnette is one of today's premier groups. DeJohnette first began recording under his own name in 1968 and his output has reflected a very eclectic taste. DeJohnette's recordings have explored anything musical but this band called "Special Edition" is amazing. This is their first recording and it is indeed a classic in the best sense of the word. The Special Edition band continued throughout the 80's and 90's with changing personnel but this first recording done in March of 1979 was one of their best. David Murray is heard on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet, Arthur Blythe on alto saxophone and Peter Warren on bass make up the band. DeJohnette is heard mostly on drums, of course, but we also hear him on piano and melodica. Three of the compositions are Jack's and two are Coltrane classics, "Central Park West" and "India". "Special Edition" was indeed very special.
This album by guitar virtuoso, Ralph Towner is once again in circulation by ECM Records. It's one of Towner's most impressive recordings as it features Ralph playing his own compositions with the amazing bassist Eddie Gomez and the always dynamic drums of Jack DeJohnette. Towner shines on classical and 12 string guitar and on one tune overdubs his fine piano playing as well. The music is haunting, hypnotic and spacy but dynamic as well and the compositions are memorable. Gomez and DeJohnette give the music an energy and pulse. "Batik" is a profound musical experience. Towner is still alive and well and currently living in Rome. This album is one of his musical highlights.
