On board today is Andy Darroch. Andy runs Independent Wealth Advice, an independent financial advice firm that provides fixed upfront fees for a statement of financial advice. He has a degree in accounting and is a CFP. He's also worked in wealth management for over a decade, including at Macquarie Bank and at one of Australia's oldest stockbroking firms, Wilson's Advisory and Stockbroking.Suffice to say he's got a bit of experience. He also calls himself a self-loathing financial advisor, which I find funny. He has some fairly controversial views on the financial advice industry, not being afraid to call out shitty or unethical products when he sees them.Having said that, it's Andy's belief that you can still get good financial advice for a fair cost without conflicts of interest - That can have a phenomenal impact on your long-term financial success. Listen in for all the details..

Join The Janus Oasis Community. I've known Darroch Crewe for 19 years - he was in training and HR when I was working in customer service. Darroch was the first person to mention to me the value of my operations experience in the context of consulting. I was getting bored with sales and was exploring change management. He's always been thoughtful and empathetic, not to mention generous. Darroch shares with us his story of moving from a tiny Toronto condo back to his home in Newfoundland during the pandemic. It's not just about return to office for many people - some people moved across the country to be closer to family. Questions are being raised over the spending priorities within corrections. Head office numbers have blown out to more than a thousand. But it's the salary structure that Sensible Sentencing wants to know more about, 541 staff are earning between $100,000 - $200,000. The number paid over $200,000 has tripled from 21 staff to 57. In this episode, Viktoria discusses gender and sexuality in mid 19th century Canada, and Sloan looks at the shows depictions of class stratification. Content warnings for mention of sexual assault and abortion. This episode continues as the second of a three part series where we will be examine the 2017 mini-series Alias Grace. This CBC production is a fictionalized retelling of the events surrounding a murder trial in mid-19th century Canada. Over the next few episodes Sloan and Viktoria will unpack the depiction of pre-confederation urban life in Ontario. The story told in Alias Grace is only inspired by the historical events surrounding the murder trial and conviction of Grace Marks. As such, rather than analyzing the events depicted, these episodes will instead focus on how well this min-series depicts the historical realities of life and society in the era. Alias Grace is based off the 1996 book by Margaret Atwood by the same title. If you'd like to watch the series yourself as we continue to discuss it over the next few episodes it is available on Netflix to Canadian service users at the time of this instalment being published. Never before in the history of humankind has it been possible for a woman to give birth to an infant who is genetically unrelated to her. Never before has it been possible for a woman to be the genetic parent of children to whom she has not given birth. Never before has it been possible to bring children into the world in more than 30 ways. Never before has it been possible that a child born can have more than two genetically related parents. Never before has the issue of choice had such kaleidoscopic implications – particularly for the children born of these advancements in medical science. So with that in mind let me paint a picture for you – it's the 1960s in South Africa, when my next guest, Fiona Darroch's parents - sought the assistance of gynaecologist/obstetrician, Dr Norman Walker, to start a family. Dr Walker assured Fiona's parents that by mixing sperm samples, it would help Fiona's dad's sperm to fertilise her mum's eggs. But before you vigorously shake your heads with disbelief - remember, we're talking about the 60's, when Drs - let alone specialists - were Godlike… and their advice was gospel. Dr Walker then told Fiona's parents to go home, make love and forget it ever happened. And that's exactly what they did.37 years later, Fiona uncovered the truth about her conception. Not only was the man who raised her not her biological father, but she also discovered that she and potentially HUNDREDS, yes HUNDREDS, of her siblings, were the outcome of what is known as fertility fraud.Today, Fiona is a clinical psychologist who works with many adults who, like her, were Donor Conceived & are struggling through the avalanche of heartache & unanswered questions when they discover that the families who raised them are not the people who gave them life.BUT BEFORE YOU GO…Find out more about Fiona hereWatch Fiona on SBS's Insight Program hereFind out more about Tam hereFollow Tam on InstaFollow BRAVE JOURNEYS on InstaJoin the conversation and chat about the episode hereNEED MORE INSPIRATION?Find other BRAVE JOURNEYS episodes hereCREDITS:Creator, Host & Executive Producer: Tammi FaradayWith thanks to my special guest: Fiona DarrochAudio Editor: Zoltan FecsoWith very special thanks to George Weinberg. The Sensible Sentencing Trust is asking Corrections hard questions about the reported death of a prisoner who murdered a Dunedin teen. It's believed Venod Skantha died behind bars yesterday - the day his appeal was rejected against a 19-year sentence for murdering Amber-Rose Rush in 2018.Trust co-leader Darroch Ball says Corrections should have systems to prevent such deaths."We obviously don't find it acceptable we have this type of situation occurring, but also there's a sense of a need for individuals like this and criminals like this who have committed such heinous crimes to face their justice."He says their first thoughts need to go to Rush and her family."Part of the process Amber-Rose's family was a sense of accountability and justice for the heinous actions he enacted upon their daughter, and this might rob them of that."Prison director Lyndal Miles says there's no indication his death was suspicious.LISTEN ABOVE
Police have put the brakes on training new officers, despite a rise in gun violence and gang activity. The delay has left hundreds of recruits in limbo and means the Government is still well short of its promise last term to put an extra 1800 cops on the streets by last year.Candidates of an upcoming training wing were initially scheduled to attend the Royal New Zealand Police College in February. But they were told in a document obtained by the Herald on Sunday that their training would be deferred until later in 2021 after recruitment requirements were reconsidered. The decision will mean a six-month drought of new cops hitting the streets between March and September.A wing of 60 recruits is set to be deployed in March at the end of the last scheduled four-month training.Police say the earliest next intake for training is scheduled to start in May, so no new officers will be available for work until September.Police halted recruitment in June last year, because of an increase in applications during the Covid-19 lockdown, but assured those already in the pipeline that their training would continue. In a statement, executive director of people and operations Kaye Ryan said attrition rates as low as 2 per cent meant there was now "less of a need for police recruits," despite police falling more than 400 short of the 2017 Government Coalition Agreement goal of adding 1800 new police officers above attrition over three years.Ryan said the growth target was always funded over a five-year period.Police Association president Chris Cahill. (Photo / Mark Mitchell)But Police Association spokesperson Chris Cahill said he believed police had to stop training because they had got ahead of their five-year budget. He urged that the money be brought forward so training could restart immediately."Labour are actually budgeting this over five years from June 2018 to June 2023 and we think that's crazy because they said if it could be done, they would do it in three years," he told the Herald on Sunday."New cops are needed now more than ever. We've got over 200 police staff working in the managed isolation facilities so that's 200 staff not out on the street. Why would you not get the recruits through while you've got people wanting to join and police have the capacity to train?"Our members are telling us they've seen some real gains with the extra numbers which came through, it had a real effect on morale in the police and their ability to do the job. By cancelling wings, we risk losing all those gains."The Government fell short of its growth target of 1800 new police over three years. (Photo / Getty)Last month, Auckland Mayor Phil Goff called on police to boost the number of frontline officers to crack down on drug trafficking and organised crime as the city wrestles with spiralling gun violence.Gang membership is also on the rise nationwide. At least 900 people reportedly joined a gang in 2020, an increase of 13 per cent on the year before, according to police figures.National's police spokesman Simeon Brown said the postponement of training in light of this reflected a "lack of commitment" from the Government to its "goals in law and order in keeping New Zealanders safe"."What's happened is failure in the Government not achieving their promise and kicking the can down the road," Brown said."It's time we take this seriously and actually ensure we have the police resources to match."The public are waking up to the fact that crime is on the rise, particularly organised criminal activity, and they need the police to be as effective and as well-resourced as possible."Cahill added his concern that the May intake would mean just 40 recruits were trained and would only go ahead if attrition rates increased. He feared the extended delay would risk them losing candidates with great potential in the police force.A police candidate, who asked to remain anonymous, agreed the process had been "disheartening"."There's been a m...

Today I’m going to be speaking with Team PartyPoker online Pro and MTT specialist the DramaticDegen himself, Travis Darroch.Travis is yet another shining example of “making it” in the modern poker world through hard work and a genuine love for the game.He grew up with a love for film and aspirations of making it in the entertainment business but, ultimately, that ended up not working out.The entertainment industry’s loss was poker’s gain when Travis learned about a little niche called “streaming” where he could marry two of his loves at the same time … performance and playing cards. In Travis’s relatively short poker career, he has already had one 6 figure score with plenty more on the way.In our conversation you’re going to hear about the misery Travis went through working at Enterprise Rent-a-Car just a few short years back, how his family feels about him being a professional poker player (Shocker of the year here, not everyone is ultra supportive of a career playing cards), and how, despite initial hardships and struggles, Travis has risen up with an amazing following and some massive tournament scores. So, without any further ado, I bring to you my conversation with the DramaticDegen himself, Travis Darroch.
Dal Darroch, head of diversity and inclusion at the Football Association, joins us to discuss the work that is being done around equality, diversity and inclusion in football. Dal is also a committee member of the Asian Business Chamber of Commerce.

This week, the British ambassador to the United States resigned after private cables leaked with his frank assessment of the White House and its occupant. Sir Kim Darroch described the administration as “clumsy” and "inept" and said President Trump "radiates insecurity." In response, the president called Darroch “wacky,” a “very stupid guy,” and a “pompous fool.” The episode is another in a long string of public feuds for Trump. But the departure of the ambassador from America's closest ally is no small matter—and one that ripples far outside Washington. So, what consequences could this have for the country and the world? And how do diplomats deal with this president when, as a current ambassador told the Times, "it could have been any one of us?" To discuss, Isaac Dovere is joined by Thomas Pickering, a Career Ambassador for the United States whose seven ambassadorships span decades of Republican and Democratic administrations. Zack, Jenn, and Alex discuss the saga of Kim Darroch, the recently-resigned UK Ambassador to the US. Some of Darroch’s private cables back home, where he referred to President Trump as “inept” (among other things), were leaked and published in a British tabloid — leading to a sequence of events that led to Darroch’s resignation and reveals quite a lot about Britain’s post-Brexit standing in the world and the US-UK relationship. For elsewhere, they discuss the Women’s World Cup — why some countries are much better than others at women’s soccer and the surprisingly deep socio-political reasons that the US is particularly dominant. References! Here’s the Daily Mail’s piece on the leaked cables. The Atlantic has a good piece on how Boris Johnson effectively sank Kim Darroch’s chances of keeping his job. In todays episode I speak with Fiona Darroch Speedie from Dancing with Horses. Fiona spent her early life in north western queensland and where her sense of freedom and adventure was nurtured and horses, and relaxed baby boomer parents, were the facilitators of that freedom. On moving to Brisbane she began dancing lessons and became an instructor, but it was the time that she found a true Latin dance teacher that her life with dancing changed for good.In time Fiona decided that dancing, horses and leadership, which she was teaching in the corporate world, were too good a mix to not explore. So began her life creating Dancing with Horses. When I speak to people about dancing with horses, they either feel excited and curious or they squirm in their seat. It’s something that can really be an incredible mirror to your behaviours when it comes to your leadership styles. Once again we find that horses are here to give us so much in their gentle and non-judgemental way. I wonder how this will make you feel?To connect with Fiona you can go to her website, Facebook page or instagram account.

The story of a group of Yale students who were the first U.S. Naval aviators first to fly for America in WW1, co-directors RON KING and DARROCH GREER are on hand to talk about their seven-year journey over three continents to bring this piece of history to the masses. From impeccable research to interviews with family descendants and historians to recreations of WWI battles to the importance of including actual aircraft and flight simulations from the day (including a Sopwith Camel on loan from Peter Jackson), our discussion with Ron and Darroch is not to be missed! And an interesting sidebar, many of the filmmakers, including narrator Bruce Dern, have ties to these airmen, many who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

[MUSIC] Preface The African American saga in World War 1 is both inspiring and terrible … Less than a generation after the civil war, this is a time where black american men and women are considered second class citizens at best. Chad Williams is the chair of the African & Afro-American Studies Department at Brandeis University and author of “Torchbearers of Democracy: African-American Soldiers in the World War I Era,”. quote: "In many ways, World War I marked the beginning of the modern civil rights movement for African-Americans. Their service in the military had dramatic implications for African-Americans. Black soldiers faced systemic racial discrimination in the army and endured virulent hostility on returning to their homes at the end of the war. At the same time, service in the army empowered soldiers to demand their individual rights as American citizens and laid the groundwork for the future movement for racial justice." So… let's jump into our wayback machine and learn more about the African American experience in the war that changed the world! World War One THEN 100 Year Ago This Week [MUSIC TRANSITION] It's the first week of December 1917 - Just a note to our audience - that the language of the times, which we have kept in our reports, refers to African Americans as negroes and colored. [SOUND EFFECT] Dateline: December 4, 197 A headline in the New York times reads ARMY IS FAIR TO NEGROES - Policy of War Department is to discourage race discrimination. The article reads - Secretary of War Baker today announced that he had ordered an investigation of the allegation that there had been discrimination against negro Draftees. Quote: "As you know, it has been my policy to discourage discrimination against any persons by reason of their race. This policy has been adopted not merely as an act of justice to safeguard the institution which we are now enagaged in defending - and which any racial disorder must endanger. The charges stem from accusations that the military is not allowing negro units into combat roles, but relegating them to Service Battalions for labor jobs. And there is a lot of truth to it. Racism is as endemic in the armed forces as it is in the rest of America at this time. Southern Democrats try to block negroes from inclusion in the draft, few colored men served in the Navy and none in the Marine Corps, and the Army’s four segregated units—the 24th and 25th Infantry and the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments are assigned guard duty on the Mexican border and never go abroad. African Americans comprised 13 percent of active-duty military manpower, but make up only seven-tenths of 1 percent of the officers. Around 200,000 African Americans are deployed to Europe and serve with distinction in the AEF - the American Expeditionary Forces - as well as with the French Army. While, as per the complaints, the vast majority of these troops are relegated to Services of Supplies (SOS) units and labor battalions, some 40,000 soldiers see combat in two new black units, the Ninety-second and Ninety-third Divisions. Fighting alongside the French, the Ninety-third serves heroically throughout the war and experiences greater acceptance and more equal treatment than that found in the U.S. Army. The division's 369th Infantry Regiment, "the Harlem Hellfighters," spend more than six months on the front lines — longer than any other American unit — in part because General Pershing, contrary to his policy of having American soldiers under American Command, gives the 369th to French commanders who take them to the front immediately - bypassing much of the training the other combat soldiers undergo... Regardless.. the 369th distinguishes itself as an awesome fighting force that never surrenders an inch of Allied territory nor loses a single soldier through capture. From this regiment alone, 171 officers and men receive either Croix de Guerre or Legions of Merit from the French government. The sacrifice of African American soldiers such as these certainly did not end racism at home or abroad, but it showed the world that their patriotism and heroism unquestioningly matches that of their white counterparts in the war that changed the world! Wait a minute… I thought we did that on April 6!?? Well that is what makes this such an interesting event. On April 6, 2017 we declared war on Germany… but not the other axis powers. Though we declared Austria Hungary an ENEMY through the “Trading with the enemy act of 1917” which we told you about in episode 42… we did not formally declare war on them until 100 years ago this week. First the French… Dateline December 3, 1917 Headline: France gives high praise to our engineers at cambrai The story reads: “There is not a single person who saw them at work who does not render warm praise to the coolness, discipline, and courage of these improvised combatants” From the seemingly - slightly jealous Pershing troops still waiting and ready to fight…. [SOUND EFFECT] Headline: Pershing’s troops envy the Engineers And the story includes: An infantry Sergeant remarked: ‘We stay in these muddy trenches for a spell and let Fritz shoot his artillery at us and have never really had a chance to use our rifles except to snipe and pot at Fritz out in No Man’s Land on dark nights. Meanwhile - These railroaders managed to run their trains right into a good, thick scrap, and if this isn’t luck, I don’t know what it is.’” And from the somewhat still astounded engineers [SOUND EFFECT] Headline: Engineers jest over first battle In the story they describe the chaos of sudden, unexpected action, “‘I hadn’t a steel hat handy” ‘so i picked up a petrol tin and put that on my head, and thought it might be better than nothing.” The journalist writes, “They are a splendid body of men,” “Hard, keen and good humored, who made a joke of their thrilling adventure and of their present danger.” And from another soldier, “‘It was the doggonedest experience I ever had, and a mighty close call!’ And that’s how it was this week, one hundred years ago in the war that changed the world! So as 1917 comes to a close, the British determine that they want to - even need to - win the city from the Ottoman Turks - and they wanted to do it before Christmas! They felt that the psychological impact was desperately needed in these otherwise dark days. Here to tell us about the campaign is Mike Shuster, former NPR correspondent and curator of the Great War Project blog. [Mike Shuster] Mike Shuster from the Great War Project blog. Life at ground level generally toxic and lethal. So, soldiers spent much of their time living in the ground. Besides the word Trenches, other related words also came into common use - several of which are still with us today. Fox hole, Dug Out and Cubby Hole are three of them! The history of Fox Hole and Dug Out are pretty obvious and the term Cubby was probably derived from the old english word cub - for shed, coop or hutch Today we still have dugouts in baseball and cubbyholes in the office - terms that got popular 100 years ago when the motto was “get down, dig in and stash yourself in a hole”. This week we will highly a few of them for you. Brooke Kroeger interview First from ww1cc.org/news-- A remarkable new book has appeared on the World War I scene, one that traces the origins of the Women's Suffrage movement in America to the war effort 100 years ago. It explores why, a group of prominent and influential men in New York City, and beyond, came together to help women gain the right to vote. Brooke Kroeger is the author. She is a journalist, author of five books, a professor of journalism at the NYU Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and director of the Global and Joint Program Studies, which she founded in 2007. You can read the interview where she speaks about this book, and what she found in writing it, by following the link in the podcast notes. link:http://www.worldwar1centennial.org/index.php/communicate/press-media/wwi-centennial-news/3772-four-questions-for-brooke-kroeger.html Marcelino Serna Next is a story about Mexican-born Marcelino Serna. When the U.S. entered World War One in 1917, it is estimated that roughly 500,000 people who joined the United States armed services were immigrants. According to the National Park Service, this amounted to 18 percent of U.S. troops. One of these was a Mexican-born, illegal immigrant named Marcelino Serna, who volunteered to join the US Army and was the first Mexican American to collect a Distinguished Service Cross. Hi Theo! Iron Harvest This week, we shared an article from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission on the Iron Harvest. It is estimated that more than a billion shells were fired during the First World War, and that as many as 30 percent of those failed to explode. Specialty bomb-disposal units in France and Belgium collect and defuse the unexploded ordinances, which are often found by farmers as they do their work. These local farmers are the ones who coined the name Iron Harvest, as they come across literal tonnes of shells every year. It’s estimated that it will take another 500 years of the Iron Harvest before the area is fully safe again. Read more about this constant reminder of the war, and watch a video of the disposal units in action, by following the link in the podcast notes. link:https://www.cwgc.org/learn/news-and-events/news/2017/11/28/16/47/the-iron-harvest-a-warning-from-history Women Photographers Finally this week, a story close to my heart. Hyperallergic put out a piece this week which we shared on facebook featuring and reviewing a new exhibition at Impressions Gallery in Bradford, England. The show is titled No Man’s Land: Women’s Photography and the First World War and features the work of some very talented and brave women photographers who served during the conflict. Some of the artists included served as official photographers, while others photographed while serving as nurses or in other auxiliary roles. One photographer was a motorcycle and ambulance driver who volunteered at 18 and whose photos range from graphic and distressing to coy and humorous. Three contemporary artists’ work is shown as well, complimenting the work done by the women a century ago. Follow the link in the podcast notes to see some of the images and to read the stories of the photographers.
