For many undergraduate nursing students (64%), burnout begins during their educational program. Resilience is a known protective factor to buffer against stress exposure that leads to burnout, but a lack of formal resilience training for undergraduate nursing students persists. Equine-assisted learning interventions promote resilience and decrease stress and burnout in a diversity of populations. In this podcast (and article), Dr. Shannon Burleson describes an equine-assisted learning intervention to reduce students' stress in school and practice after graduation.

Horse equine therapy, also known as equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a therapeutic practice that involves interactions between patients and horses to promote emotional, mental, and physical well-being. This form of therapy is often used to help individuals with various conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, autism, and physical disabilities. Austin-based Kristine Palmer co-founded Horse and Bow, where she combines horses, archery and mindfulness for team building and leadership development and facilitates equine assisted learning. Therapeutic activities with horses can include riding, grooming, and caring for horses, which help individuals develop skills like communication, trust, self-confidence, and emotional regulation. Listen for success stories of those Kristine has worked with and who knows? You may want to bring your team to work with Kristine and her beautiful horses! Gerrit Pelzer and Martin Aldergård delve into an unexpected but insightful theme: what leaders can learn from horses. Joined by guest Ed Renshaw, an executive coach with expertise in equine-assisted leadership development, they explore the parallels between interacting with horses and leading people, providing a unique perspective on leadership dynamics.Highlights:Purposeful Leadership: Horses, like people, respond to clear, authentic leadership. Ed explains how horses mirror human energy and intentions, offering leaders immediate feedback on their behavior. Horses thrive under purposeful direction, and this mirrors what human teams expect from their leaders.Horses as Mirrors: One of the central concepts discussed is how horses, being prey animals with a heightened fight-or-flight response, serve as perfect mirrors for human behavior. If a leader approaches a horse with too much anxiety or uncertainty, the horse will react similarly, providing an unfiltered reflection of how leaders might be perceived by their teams.Non-Bias and Vulnerability: Horses don't care about a person's title or position—they only respond to how a person shows up in the moment. This non-judgmental nature strips away ego, requiring leaders to be truly present, vulnerable, and authentic—traits that are critical for fostering trust and followership in human leadership contexts as well.Feedback and Self-Reflection: Working with horses brings up powerful insights quickly, potenitally much faster than traditional coaching or leadership development programs might. Ed shares real-life examples where leaders were humbled by the honest feedback provided by their equine counterparts, leading to profound realizations about their leadership style and impact.Key Takeaways:Instant Feedback on Leadership Style: Opposed to collecting feedback from humans, horses provide immediate, visceral responses. If a horse doesn't follow you, it might indicate that something is off with your leadership approach. The Importance of Connection: Building a connection with a horse is similar to building human relationships at work. A leader must create trust, be aware of energy, and be able to shift between directive and supportive behaviors. This reflects a core challenge of leading people in today's complex work environments.Overcoming Skepticism: While leaders may be skeptical about learning from horses, Ed shares examples that demonstrate how unconventional methods like equine-assisted leadership development can offer powerful, lasting lessons for corporate leaders.Reflection Questions:How do I show up as a leader in critical moments? Am I purposeful and clear, or am I sending mixed signals to my team? What feedback do I receive from my team's body language or non-verbal responses, and how can I become more attuned to this? How can I create more opportunities for honest feedback in my leadership, even without access to a horse?About Ed RenshawTo learn more about Ed Renshaw and his work with equine-assisted leadership, connect with him on LinkedIn.About Second CrackMore information about us and our work is available on our website: secondcrackleadership.comFor questions, feedback, or suggestions, or to explore how we can help you develop your leadership, email us at hello@secondcrackleadership.com.Connect with us on LinkedIn:Martin AldergårdGerrit Pelzer

Season 2- Episode 57 On this episode, Nature Speaks' Founder, Rachel shares her love for raising and nurturing horses, how important it is to learn self-sustainability, the benefits of horse manure, the healing capabilities that horses possess, the many programs they offer homeschoolers, and she gives us a tour of the farm. https://www.nature-speaks.com/our-story.html Rachel Ibarra2:14 PM (8 minutes ago)to meNature Speaks was created from a very personal tragedy that changed who I am. While riding my leased horse Jazz, in the woods of Palm Beach Gardens, the horse collapsed underneath me and I slid on my face in the sand where I landed superman style. When the horse stood back up she stepped on the back of my hand breaking my pinky finger in half. Three days later, while I was in and out of plastic surgery to put my face back on in the hospital, Jazz was hit by lightning in her pasture and killed. I was devastated. Now in addition to my body being broken, my spirit was too! I cried for days.At the time I owned a public relations firm called NozNewz Communications, Inc. I represented businesses, non profit organizations and government entities in Palm Beach County for almost 20 years. During my recovery I read voraciously! The book that changed my life is called the Tao of Equus by therapist and horsewoman Linda Kohanov. She writes about her experiences living with her herd of horses and using those experiences to help others through the practice of equine therapy. I studied her model of equine therapy and those of other practitioners but I felt a little empty. Equine therapy is ground work with the horse only. It does not include riding. But to me and the kids I wanted to work with, riding the horse is an important component to empowerment. So I created a life skills program called "Who's in Your Herd?" which teaches about making good decisions in life in a very simple way. Decisions which will affect the future path of a youngster and we use the horses as our facilitators/teachers assistants. As horses live in herds, so do people but our herds change throughout the day and throughout our lives. We use the philosophy of taking care of the horses as a metaphor for taking care of oneself. So my future path became more clear and I took a risk by taking an equity loan out on my home and started Nature Speaks with the money. I knew that horses helped me in my recovery and I was desperate to share that with others who needed personal growth. Rachel Ibarra is an approved contractor for all Florida public schools and was a member of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office COP Mounted Unit for five years. Nature Speaks offers western riding lessons, homeschool programs and field trips, Equine Assisted Learning workshops and summer and winter break activities. Memes: Little Girl with Owl Meme - "The first meme is the girl. It's a young girl. I'm going to guess she's probably maybe 8 to 10 years old and she's literally holding her hand up and she has on this big thick brown leather glove covering her arm. And there's a huge hawk standing on her hand... And it's one of those empowering photos where you go, be as strong as a little girl holding the hawk. And it just jumped out at me." [We realized later in the conversation that it was an owl and not a hawk.]Andy Dwyer Happy Meme - "It's a picture of Chris Pratt, and he has this total look of surprise. His mouth is open and... it's a happy surprise... It's like, 'Oh my gosh, I can't believe I just discovered this. I found something. I'm excited!' The lovely Laurie Brander joins us today to talk all about our recent trip to Arizona, her wonderful horses and how the training truly never ends! Laurie's love and compassion for critters and love of animals is life-long. Laurie started Epona Experience in 2008, several years into her relationship with her "heart horse," Summer. Through her relationship with Summer, Laurie became fascinated with how Summer demanded an authentic relationship before she would cooperate. As a result, Laurie was forced to change her interactions and relationship with Summer. Based on this experience, when she first heard of Equine Assisted Learning, Laurie was hooked. This skills development program with horses is a natural progression of Laurie's fascination with the dynamic relationship between horses and humans. Laurie has been certified since 2008. However, immediately upon discovery of these groundbreaking programs offered by Equine Connection, Laurie traveled to Strathmore, AB, Canada to attend The Academy of Equine Assisted Learning's Course. Laurie became certified to facilitate the BuildingBlock™ Curriculum in 2016. Laurie is excited to be able to be the first to bring this research proven program with irrefutable results to the Southwestern United States. Laurie believes that as sensitive prey animals with extraordinary senses, horses can feel what you bring to the table, regardless of any façade you are presenting. At the same time, being with horses is simply a wonderful experience for most people. In a magical way, horses can teach one to be a better human - a better parent, a better leader, a better teammate. Laurie has spent decades working in the legal profession and business world. When she is not working with clients and the teachers, she works freelance as a writer, paralegal, and trial technology specialist.

With the success of her own business, Jane was invited by Equine Connection to become the only certified instructor in the southern hemisphere for Equine Connection and underwent intensive training at their headquarters in Canada. That the Netherlands is a forward thinking country we can all agree – especially when it comes to matters of social welfare. Given that the country also helped give the world things that give great pleasure - like coffee, tulips, the Stock Exchange, New Amsterdam (New York City), not to mention liquorice, gouda cheese and gin (alright, there might have been a bit of a colonial process at work for some of these, but nonetheless…), its perhaps no surprise that all things equestrian-assisted, from straight up Therapeutic and Adaptive Riding to Equine Assisted Psychotherapy to other neuro-cognitive approaches, have been funded in the Netherlands on a state level for decades. It's also a country with a strong tradition in fine horsemanship. The Dutch Warmblood, the Gelderlander, the Frisian..'nuff said.Carola Beekman`s Maheo Program (meaning Proud in Polynesian), located in Arnhem, in the Eastern Netherlands, treads the line between cutting edge Equine Assisted Work for autism, trauma and neuro-cognitive work, and the use of the Old Masters System of Classical Dressage, especially the work in-hand and in the long reins, not just to keep her horses in optimum mind and body for the job, but also as its own therapy for her adult clients; training them to be horse trainers, maintainers and rehabbers.Carola's background goes beyond the equine and therapeutic however – for years she was a teacher in the regular school system and eventually got her principal's license, so teaching actual academics - maths, science, languages, all through the horses and her barn environment, is also part of the service at Maheo. Finally, where Carola has perhaps gained most of her experience, is through her own struggles with mental and emotional health. Rather than try to present herself as somehow perfect, she – in true honest Dutch fashion – is refreshingly open and frank about thee struggles and the insights they have given her, as we will learn. So listen on; Carola Beekman has a lot to teach us out here in the Equine Assisted World.Contact Carolahttps://www.carolabeekman.nl/https://movementmethod.nlCarola offers Horse Boy Method & Movement Method workshops. These programs include Adaptive Carriage Driving, Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy and Equine Assisted Learning, and are designed to cater to individuals, groups of veterans, Pre-K children, and aged community members. One of the benefits of human-horse interaction is its ability to provide both physical and mental-emotional benefits. CHAPS' professional staff and volunteers work closely with clients to ensure safe lessons and increase confidence, while every effort is made to ensure the safety of the client, horse, volunteers and staff.CHAPS' instructors have a strong equine background, as well as an understanding of various disabilities, and each staff member earns a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education per year. Melissa Duniam is striving to ensure Australian workplaces are healthier and more productive through her design of facilitated equine workshops. The Tasmanian winner of the 2023 Agrifutures Rural Women's Award was shocked by statistics released by Australian mental health support organisation, Beyond Blue that say one in five Australians have taken time off work for anxiety, depression and mental health challenges - while an astonishing 46 per cent consider their work place to be mentally unhealthy. Melissa is a dairy farmer, business consultant and an Equine Assisted Learning facilitator - helping companies and their employees communicate better whilst learning to work alongside horses through her business, Leading Rein. It's a passion that Melissa never knew could be a career – and was sparked by a transformative crossroads moment in 2016, after suffering a devastating farm accident.

For anyone who has been with us for a while, you have heard us talk about this before. But it is such an important topic. There is a difference between learning and therapy, and that difference is a licenced professional.
Marc Cox & Bo Matthews speak with Lulu Bogolin from Equine Assist Therapy. The recreational nature of the Equine-Assisted Activities program allows a source of hope for people with disabilities. They can leave the standard clinical setting and enjoy an independence they never thought would be available to them. The Equine-Assisted Learning Program is an experiential education program that harnesses the power of relationship with the horse as a path to self-discovery and growth. This is not a typical horseback riding class. Riding is offered as part of some Equine-Assisted Learning classes, but it is not the main focus. Silver Saddles is a program for able bodied riders that are 55+ years old. The Veterans Program facilitates a relationship and a bond between the veteran and his or her horse. They are having their Cornhole Tournament 2023 Sunday, March 12th at 3369 Hwy 109 Wildwood, MO 63038 Check in at 10am – Bags fly at 10:30am $60 per team – $35 for single registrant Will take place rain or shine in our indoor arena. https://eatherapy.org/

Lauren has an in-depth conversation with Rebecca Britt, an Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning. Rebecca became involved with training horses as a child. In her career as a social worker, she realized the similarities of therapeutic intervention with children and training horses using natural horsemanship. From this realization, Stable Moments was born, an organization where community members play an active role in the lives of foster and adopted children. Rebecca talks about the importance of the mentorship program. And no…..you don't need specialized training or a degree to make a difference in a kiddo's life. The magic of the Stable Moments program is in the one-on-one mentorship. Leadership is about leading by example, so Rebecca regularly does her own healing work. Self-worth issues surface in different circumstances, defense mechanisms from her childhood. She feels we owe it to the world to heal ourselves so we are better able to “show up” for others in the way we truly want to. Try-at-home tip: Try the “give and take” activity as described by our guest. Guest Bio:Stable Moments® was founded in October 2014 by Rebecca Britt. Rebecca is a social worker and horse trainer with a certification as an Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Social Work from the University of Vermont in 2010 and became employed as a Post Adoption Case Manager. During her work with adopted children, she realized the correlations between how to therapeutically intervene with children surviving with trauma and how to train horses using natural horsemanship. Through the growth of the Stable Moments program, Rebecca has developed the model and is offering it as a practical curriculum to anyone wishing to serve foster or adopted children. Rebecca is serving children nationwide, by offering training, curriculum, and resources to equine facilities across the country. Rebecca speaks to equine and mental health professionals across the nation about her unique approach and model. She holds a Master's Degree in Program Evaluation, as well as a professional certification in Results-Based Accountability. This allows her to provide all Stable Moments locations the best tools for collecting data and demonstrating impact of their programs.Find out more about Rebecca on her website or social media using @stablemoments.
