Dad Bod Rap Pod is back with a double dose of interviews. We kick off this week's show with some thoughts on the passing of the legendary music producer and raconteur Quincy Jones. Then we have an interview with Prince Po, one half of the almighty Organized Konfusion. We had a chance to interview Pharoahe Monch a few years back, and we have been looking forward to completing the cypher on this legendary group for some time. Po was kind enough to join us for a conversation, and we discussed his influences, the changes between albums that led to the making of the legendary Stress: The Extinction Agenda, as well as his ties to our hometown of San Jose. On the back half of the program we have a chat with friends of the program Fat Tony and Fatboi Sharif, who recently released a project with Steel Tipped Dove called Brain Candy. We get into how these underground stalwarts originally connected, the importance of in-person recording, and more. Please note that this episode was recorded before we knew the results of the election. Like many of you, we are trying to make sense of the dark reality of this political moment. Hopefully our show can help provide a moment of solace in these trying times. DBRP is hosted by Demone Carter, David Ma, and Nate LeBlanc. Theme song produced by Cutso and DEM ONE. Brought to you by Stony Island Audio.

Now that we've been around for a number of years, we've had the chance to interact with rappers and producers at various stages of their careers. Sometimes we catch people on the ascent, still forging their legacy, and sometimes we speak to legends whose time influencing the culture is likely behind them. And sometimes, we engage with early-career artists right as they begin to level up and make a name for themselves to a wider audience. We have seen this happen with friends of the program like Defcee and Fatboi Sharif, and this week we have a conversation with rapper NAHreally and producer The Expert, who feel like they are on the verge of a similar breakthrough. They are promoting their new collaborative album Blip! out now on Rucksack Records. For NAH, this is his first release on vinyl, his first foray into securing features from other indie artists he admires, and just a lot of firsts in general. For producer The Expert, this is the latest in a line of collab albums, including recent tomes with Stik Figa and Jermicide, where he has consistently displayed a knack for psych-tinged knocking beats. In the bookending segments, DBRP hosts David Ma and Nate LeBlanc (Demone Carter is on assignment his week) discuss new music, an upcoming book project they are both working on, and the concept of "Regular Guy Rap" and what makes an artist relatable in the modern world of hip-hop. This episode was mixed by Taylor Weng. Theme song by Cutso and DEM ONE. Announcements by Don Newkirk. Dad Bod Rap Pod is brought to you by Stony Island Audio. Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING The Plug (0:21). Main Body of Discussion (2:23). On rare occasion, we get two artists that come together at a moment where their skillsets and mindsets align in sublime harmony. That is what I see with Fatboi Sharif and steel tipped dove's latest album released on Backwoodz Studioz, titled Decay. Sharif's been progressively growing as a vocalist and lyricist… who's unique gifts mesh perfectly with the vast, atmospheric, and cutting-edge brand of experimentation found in steel tipped dove's production. Decay is a soundtrack for the times. Not necessarily the times that are upon us at this very moment, but what may soon be our reality in just a few decades from now. Decay is a psychedelic masterpiece - a result of two creative minds joining forces at the exact right time in their careers. Sharif and Dove are here today to breakdown how this excellent new album was created, in the latest installment of the 'Album Alchemy' series. The sonic landscape of Decay (4:03). Lyrical themes and inspirations of Decay (8:29). The heavily gothic and creepy sound of Decay (13:40). Sharif's continued evolution as a vocalist (16:00). The thinking behind having no features on Decay (21:37). Releasing the album on Backwoodz Studioz, and the label's influence on the final product (24:38). The structure of shorter songs - longer tracklist of Decay (28:50). Favourite songs (32:48). Upcoming projects (38:31). A mix by Joseph Sannicandro (@thenewobjective) that will be played at Cinema Politica (www.cinemapolitica.org) screenings as people gather for the projection. Below is the track listing: Soundtrack Politica mix by @thenewobjective Accompanying image from the documentary: Whose Streets? https://www.cinemapolitica.org/film/whose-streets Two things I love: hip hop and soundtrack music. More specifically, New York hip hop and Italian soundtrack music, which form the basis of most of this mix (with a few west coast tracks thrown in for good measure). In recent years there's been a newfound appreciation for soundtracks and library music, but hip hop producers have been digging those gems for decades. MCs are amongst the best contemporary storytellers, though they don't often get enough recognition in that respect. And in my opinion, we have been witnessing a new golden age in New York hip hop, so I've mostly selected songs released in the last few years to highlight the excellent work being done today. There are a good number of instrumental cuts here, but where there are rhymes they often have political and spiritual significance that might resonate with the films screened at Cinema Politica. I also aimed for close to gender balance on the voices heard on this mix. I gravitated towards tracks that tell a story and tracks that sample soundtracks, and tie it all together with a few choice cuts from soundtracks themselves. Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING The Plug (0:21). Main Body of Discussion (1:44). Weirdness and experimentation in music is a tricky thing. It's very easy to go too far and make music that is so unlistenable to many listeners. It is also easy to make music that feels pushes musical boundaries, but to no meaningful end. Where the end product doesn't come together into a cohesive statement that says anything coherent. Lucky for us listeners of Fatboi Sharif and noface's latest album, Preaching in Havana, none of the above applies. Havana is a true mindf*** of an album that is stunning, and I'm pleased to be joined by the creators of this record, Fatboi Sharif and noface, to explain how the h*** this twisted record was made. The vision of Preaching in Havana (4:09). The creative process of the Havana beats (10:58). Why Sharif selected these beats to rap over (22:41). Sharif's increasingly abstract and impressionistic rapping style (28:07). The importance of GENG's post-production work on Havana (29:51). Sharif and noface's favourite songs (38:06). Real weirdos are hard to find. Sure there are rappers who attempt to project strangeness but the vast majority come across inauthentic or unlistenable (or both). Every so often a true eccentric grabs the mic and reorients our ideas about how wavy this art form can be. Fatboi Sharif is one such artist. Verbose, macabre, and enigmatic the New Jersey rapper has amassed a devoted following over the past couple years by releasing a string of authentically weird joints with producers like Roper Williams and Lungs/Lonesword. His latest offering Preaching in Havana is a collaboration with producer Noface. The duo have crafted a project that is eerie and unsettling in all the right ways. Hosts Nate Le Blanc and David Ma talk to Sharif and Noface about how Havana came into being and the mystique they have both cultivated. During the into segment Demone and Nate talk about Eminem's Rock and Rock Hall of Fame Induction and the tragic passings of Tame One and Hurricane G. While the serious work of breaking down his intimidating career takes place a lot of laughter and fun goes along with it. Castro discusses his feature verse on Armand Hammer x Alchemist album Haram.
Roper Williams and Fatboi Sharif worked for years crafting the world of Gandhi Loves Children. The result: an experience still shaking the indie rap world. The funny and intelligent Sharif digs into his creative process with Dan-O as well as Lil Wayne(wait till you hear his favorite album!),the components of a bad album, and dream collaborations.
On the fifth episode, welcomes rapper Fatboi Sharif and producer Roper Williams, two of New Jersey's finest. Fatboi Sharif talks about Gandhi Loves Children, his recent project with producer Roper Williams. In the process he also touches on influences, his interest in film, his creative approach, not releasing 12 albums per year, and helps us examine the oddity that is Prince Paul's solo debut - Psychoanalysis: What Is It?!
(Go to 0:55 to skip the intro) In Episode 31, we are joined by special guests hailing from New Jersey, Fatboi Sharif and Roper Williams, who both experienced a very successful 2020. In 2020, Roper dropped a dope beat tape titled save my line, nailed some big placements on some of my favourite albums of the year in Navy Blue's Song of Sage, and Your Old Droog's Dump YOD. Sharif's 2020 saw him deliver some nice features, as well as some crazy visuals for the "Church Tower" and "Smithsonian" singles... culminating into the provocative and wildly entertaining Gandhi Loves Children album that he released with Roper Williams. We start off by discussing the roots of how Sharif and Roper began their careers, and when they realized that they had a special talent that could turn their passion into a career (2:39). Next, Sharif details how he developed and employs his evocative rapping style, and the inspirations he has drawn from over the years (5:43). Roper and Sharif then give us some insight into how their relationship developed into the fun and fruitful connection it is today (14:18). We then dive into how the genius album title and theme for Gandhi Loves Children was conceived, along with why Sharif prefers being subtle in his lyrics, letting the listener come up with the art's meaning on their own (18:23). Roper illustrates how he was able to craft such dark and experimental soundscapes to match the album's twisted lyrical content (22:55). Sharif dives into the writing process for his signature wild bars, and discusses if these lyrics are authentically him, or if it's just a character (25:20). Roper then explains how it was like working with previous collaborators of his, such as Your Old Droog, Navy Blue, Pink Siifu, and how it contrasts with working with Fatboi Sharif. We then threw that question back to Sharif to see what differentiates a Roper beat from the rest of the pack (32:24). Next, the duo deliberates what the most important component of a great album is in their minds (35:35), dream collaborators (43:40), and their favourite records from the east coast and 2020, along with some surprising albums you may not expect them to like (49:36)... CAUTION: Sharif reveals an unpopular opinion about a certain Lil Wayne album that will shock you! Finally, we end the interview with Sharif and Roper detailing what they have in store for rap fans in 2021 (1:00:02). Check out Episode 24 of the show for a full review of Gandhi Loves Children. (Go to 2:14 to skip the intro) In Episode 25, we review some of the most distinct and fresh albums to come out of 2020. First, we discuss Navy Blue's Song of Sage: Post Panic!, a deeply intimate and vulnerable record that explores topics related to mental health, racism, and generational trauma (2:52). Next, we review Iceberg Theory and August Fanon's dense philosophical adventure Dispatches from the Kali Yuga (20:21). Finally, we finish off by reviewing Fatboi Sharif and Roper Williams' wild and exciting Gandhi Loves Children (36:29). -- For music submissions and/or private feedback, DM me @rohview on Twitter and Instagram, or shoot me an email at qlctv.podcast@gmail.com Let's stay connected!
