In the frozen landscape of Finnish winter, 1885, the quiet croft of Efraim Martin in Ylöjärvi became the center of local attention thanks to a series of unexplainable events that saw almost the entire neighbourhood crowd into the small farmhouse. Rumours of the devils and demons wound through the township, as neighbors swore they saw an invisible force cause havoc throughout the otherwise peaceful home. In this interview, The Rasmus frontman Lauri Ylönen discusses the creative process behind the band's album “Weirdo,” revealing how personal experiences fuel his songwriting… from the revenge-driven “Rest in Pieces” written at 3 a.m. after a friend's betrayal, to the deeply personal “I'm Coming For You,” a confessional song for his 17-year-old son about balancing career and fatherhood. Ylönen shares his approach to songwriting, often composing melodies in his head before touching an instrument, and reflects on the band's “Stay Weird” philosophy as a message against social media pressure and perfectionism. Ylönen also describes performing a charity concert in Ukraine, sleeping in bomb shelters during missile strikes, and meeting exhausted soldiers. Throughout, he discusses writing lyrics in English as a second language, how his naturally shy Finnish personality contrasts with his stage persona, and the importance of maintaining band unity with members he's known for three decades.

With the album out tomorrow, HEAVY caught up with Ylönen to dive deeper into Weirdo."I'm feeling excited," he smiled. "A little bit nervous, still, after all these years. We've been putting a lot of emotion and a lot of time into this album for the last two or three years, and it's finally going to be released. It's a bit nerve-racking to let it go. But so far it's been a really good response, and the fans have been liking the new, little heavier sound. It's a strong album."We read back an earlier quote from Ylönen, which said, "I find it comforting that our 11th album is pretty much the same message as our first album released in 1996" and ask him to elaborate."It is maybe the main message of the band," he measured. "Just be yourself, no matter what. I think that's always been a struggle for me, but as I've grown up, I've been able to find my soulmates; people like me have come to me because it was almost like an invitation. To dress up like that, to put makeup on like that, do my hair like that, especially back in the days when there was no social media and that kind of easy access to people. You had to send messages out there, like, please find me."In the full interview, Lauri shared insights into the personal nature of the lyrics on Weirdo, including a ballad dedicated to his son, and discussed the album's overarching message of authenticity. 39: Putting ‘Junk' in Your Heart Will Make You Sick A candid conversation with Dr. Henry Cloud   Being vulnerable makes me uncomfortable, especially considering how I "used to be" before cancer. 38: Can a Lack of Boundaries Contribute to Cancer Risk? A candid conversation with Boundaries author, Dr. Henry Cloud.   I was 33, single, and struggling with boundaries. I always picked the wrong guy, and then the relationship would blow up, and I'd be crushed and have a crisis of confidence.   One day I was driving to a work appointment and switched on my radio and discovered Dr. Cloud on my local radio station. 45: Can a Lack of Sleep Cause Cancer? Getting Better Rest with Sleep Expert Devin Burke I haven't been a good sleeper for the last twenty years or so. I overthink, and then I seem to get myself "worked up;" it takes me hours to fall asleep. Add in Covid and breast cancer, and I can tell you the last two years have been rough. This is why I was so excited to welcome sleep expert Devin Burke to today's podcast episode. One of Devin's tips was to start my day with a glass of water and then coffee. He suggests I go outside and look toward the sun (never at the sun!), drink my water, and wait an hour before coffee. I'm not sure I can do it, but I'm giving it a shot :) Here's the sleep tip I've already started to incorporate, and I'm telling you, it's helping me to fall asleep faster. Devin suggests going outside for five minutes a couple of times per day. The point is to give your brain a break and not try to solve any problems. He concludes that giving your brain some downtime helps to encourage your body to sleep deeper at night. This is harder than it sounds, so I had to leave my phone inside. The team announced the return of Nicolas Beaudin and Lucas Condotta on two-way deals for the upcoming season. Interestingly enough, Condotta appears to have done enough to have earned a two-year deal, with Beaudin returns on a one-year contract. Where do both of these players slot in on the Rocket next year, and will either push for serious NHL time as well? That leaves just Jesse Ylönen as the last unsigned RFA for the Canadiens, and it begs the question, where will the Finnish winger slot in next year? He has a ton of offensive upside, and the smarts to work great in Martin St. Louis' system, but spots are very limited. Could Ylönen become a sweetener in a trade to move a longer term contract off the books, or will Kent Hughes manage to make the space for Ylönen before the regular season begins?
