I'm new to Arizona. We moved here from Florida for a number of reasons, chief among them was the fact that AZ was trending bluer while FL has become Fascist Central. Well, yesterday Arizona's Supreme Court reinstated a law that was in effect until 1973 when Roe v Wade came into effect and legalized a woman's right to choose what happens with her own body. Since that 1864 law was never officially removed from the books it was still in effect once Roe was overturned. ARGHH. I attempted to get some AZ officials and others to discuss the ramifications of yesterday's news to no avail. That makes sense as I'm guessing this is an all hands on deck moment. So, I thought back to how we dealt with the Supreme Court overturning Roe two years ago. It was June 24, 2022 when they did the unthinkable. The following Monday, June 27, I spoke with the man regarded as the father of the birth control and abortion rights movement, Bill Baird. I was introduced to him by the always brilliant Barry W. Lynne. When we spoke almost two years ago, Bill had just turned 90! As is too often the case, we had some technical difficulties, but it's worth hanging through them to meet and learn about Bill Baird. I hope he will give you the inspiration he's given me during incredibly awful times like these.... We'll begin with a song from Jill Sobule that she wrote after Texas enacted its disgusting Fetal Heartbeat bill that outlawed abortion after six weeks. (From Wikipedia: The Texas Heartbeat Act, Senate Bill 8 (SB 8), is an act of the Texas Legislature that bans abortion after the detection of embryonic or fetal cardiac activity, which normally occurs after about six weeks of pregnancy. The law took effect on September 1, 2021, after the U.S. Supreme Court denied a request for emergency relief from Texas abortion providers.[1] It was the first time a state has successfully imposed a six-week abortion ban since Roe v. Wade, and the first abortion restriction to rely solely on enforcement by private individuals through civil lawsuits, rather than having state officials enforce the law with criminal or civil penalties. The act authorizes members of the public to sue anyone who performs or facilitates an illegal abortion for a minimum of $10,000 in statutory damages per abortion, plus court costs and attorneys' fees.) --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message

The South Carolina Supreme Court upheld the state's new 'Fetal Heartbeat and Protection from Abortion Act' protecting unborn babies with a detectable fetal heartbeat, after striking down the state's previous six-week abortion ban earlier this year, ruling it violated the state's constitution. The United States Court of Appeals on the Eleventh Circuit declared [3-0] last week that Alabama may fully enforce its 2022 statute bans on dangerous puberty blockers, hormone treatments and mutilating procedures for children. A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - Our Lady of Guadalupe proclaimed the Gospel in “mother tongue,” Pope Francis said Wednesday in a message that highlighted the important role mothers play in passing on the faith to the next generation. In his catechesis on evangelization on August 23, the pope spoke about how the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1531 helped to spread the Gospel across the Americas, praising her as an inspired model of motherhood and inculturation. Pope Francis said the Virgin Mary always “consoles us, makes us go forward and thus allows us to grow, like a good mother who, while following in her son's steps, launches him into the world's challenges.” Pope Francis underscored the importance of Marian shrines and pilgrimage destinations, like the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, as places where the Gospel continues to be proclaimed today. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/255164/pope-francis-like-our-lady-of-guadalupe-mothers-can-be-great-evangelizers-today South Carolina's Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that a law protecting unborn babies with detectable heartbeats from abortion is constitutional and can go into effect. The ruling ended a circuit court's injunction that had temporarily blocked the Fetal Heartbeat and Protection from Abortion Act, which was signed by Republican Governor Henry McMaster in May. Planned Parenthood and Greenville Women's Clinic had requested the injunction, claiming the law violates constitutional rights to privacy, equal protection, and substantive due process. The 4-1 ruling is a victory for pro-life legislators in the state, which passed a similar law in 2021. That law was blocked more than a year later and struck down by the state Supreme Court in January of this year. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/255168/south-carolina-supreme-court-upholds-heartbeat-abortion-ban-life-is-winning Irish-American Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York celebrated Mass at a “Mass rock” in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland, during a pilgrimage on Monday. During the 16th and 18th centuries, under the Penal Laws, all expressions of the Catholic faith were prohibited in Ireland. Priests risked fines, imprisonment, and death for celebrating Mass. This forced priests to celebrate Mass outdoors, in secret locations, using rocks as makeshift altars. Many of these “Mass rocks” are still in existence today and serve as a symbol of the hardships Irish Catholics endured during British rule. During the Mass for the group of pilgrims, Dolan emphasized the importance of the Eucharist. Dolan will conclude the pilgrimage today by celebrating Mass on the 150th anniversary of the dedication of Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Armagh, Ireland, which took place on August 24, 1873. The Mass will take place on Sunday, August 27, at 11 am local time and is open to the public. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/255167/cardinal-timothy-dolan-celebrates-mass-at-historic-mass-rock-during-pilgrimage-to-ireland Today, the Church celebrates Saint Bartholomew, one of the Twelve Apostles, mentioned sixth in the three Gospel lists. Besides being listed as an Apostle, he is not otherwise mentioned in the New Testament, at least not under the name Bartholomew: many ancient writers, and Catholic tradition have identified Bartholomew as Nathaniel in the Gospel of John. We are presented with the Apostle's character in a brief and beautiful dialogue with the Lord Jesus. He is a good Jew, honest and innocent, a just man, who devotes much time to quiet reflection and prayer - "under the fig tree" - and has been awaiting the Messiah, the Holy One of God. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-bartholomew-apostle-569

The South Carolina ban on abortions after cardiac activity is no more after the latest legal challenge to the state's 2021 law proved successful. The state Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the restrictions violate the state constitution's right to privacy. The measure banned abortions after cardiac activity is detected, typically around six weeks into a pregnancy, with exceptions for those caused by rape and incest or endangering the patient's life.Plus, Carolyn Bruck connects the dots on how a deadly plane crash in Charlotte 20 years ago forever changed air travel in the United States. It's the story of Air Midwest Flight 5481, which resulted in safety changes that are implemented for every flight across the country. And finally, Friday is National Take Down Your Christmas Tree Day. It sounds silly, but it's a thing, we promise. And while most folks who bought a real tree will throw it out or recycle theirs ... a viral article has another suggestion: Eating it! But can you actually do that? Hour 2 - Nick Reed is live at Scramblers Diner for the Friday Road Show. Here's what he covers: Tom Martz is not with us this morning. An AP report on slain North Dakota teen omits that the alleged assailant thought the victim was a 'Republican extremist' Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot fired back at the CEO of McDonald's after he highlighted the difficulty rising crime in the city has caused for his business, telling him he needs to "educate himself" on the matter. The dumbest quote of the day comes from Stacey Abrams. Abrams said, "There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks. It is a manufactured sound designed to convince people that men have the right to take control of a woman's body." The pro-abortion media admitted unborn babies have senses and are capable of expressing emotions, directly contradicting the often trotted-out false claim that the unborn are not yet human.

In recent comments, Stacey Abrams says there is no such thing as a fetal heartbeat before 6 weeks and that it is a “manufactured sound.” Fox News has the story:  Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams said Wednesday there is "no such thing" as a fetal heartbeat at six weeks of gestation.   At an event at the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, Abrams claimed that the sound of such fetal heartbeats is "manufactured" by men seeking to "take control" of women.  "There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks," Abrams, who is running against incumbent Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, told the audience. "It is a manufactured sound designed to convince people that men have the right to take control of a woman's body."  At what age is it appropriate to expose children to certain books in school?  Also, Vince shares a personal story as well as Faith Focus Friday. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
