Just call or text (201) 574-7402, leave your questions or concerns, and Lizz and Moji will pick a few to address on the pod! Your fav Buzzkills are talking about the trend of reclassifying things like abortion meds and birth control, and then outlawing them in the process! You know, the ol' “make them sound terrible then use it to strip away your rights” trick. We've also got lots to say about the Catholic Papi's passing and what he DIDN'T do for abortion, shenanigans that are popping up out of Louisiana and which other states are hopping on the bandwagon, PLUS all of the other abobo-related news your earholes need to hear this week.  WHO ARE OUR GUESTS THIS WEEK? WE'RE STACKED.We're yapping with Medicaid and repro care expert, Dr. Cat Duffy of the National Health Law Program (NHeLP), about the harsh realities of what the proposed trash Medicaid cuts could mean for reproductive rights, how YOU can fight back, and how not allowing abortion in the Medicaid system is racist as hell.  PLUS, musician and comedian Shonali joins the pod to remind us that reproductive rights and abortion are PUNK AS FUCK, and gabs with us on art and disco as revolution, the power in being yourself, how she's channeling her rage, on being detained at the border, and her incredible new album, One Machine at a Time.  Times are heavy, but knowledge is power, y'all. The Record Store Day Podcast with Paul Myers

With Record Store Day 2025 in the books, we continue to feature some of the talented recording artists who make the records; and this week we have one of the all-time greats. Bob Mould has enjoyed a long and illustrious career in which he has frequently been the guitarist and singer fronting superb rock trios, starting in Minnesota with the seminal '80s indie band Hüsker Dü, and Sugar in the '90s. Bob has continued to record as a solo singer/songwriter who consistently delivers edgy and emotional guitar rock, which brings us to the topic of today's episode, Mould's 15th solo album, the recently released Here We Go Crazy (Granary Music / BMG) which finds Bob's signature blistering guitar and urgent vocals once again backed by his powerful and long-serving rhythm section of Jason Narducy on bass, and friend of the show, Jon Wurster on the drums. The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music.  Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton.  For the most up-to-date news about all things RSD, visit RecordStoreDay.com   Please consider subscribing to our podcast wherever you get podcasts, and tell your friends, we're here every week and we love making new friends.

An unexpected music miracle unfolded in Athens, Georgia when all four original members of REM reunited on stage during a Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy tribute performance celebrating the 40th anniversary of "Fables of the Reconstruction." This rare convergence became the highlight of a music-packed fortnight in Athens, GA that I'm thrilled to share with you in vivid detail. The magic moment happened at the legendary 40 Watt Club when Michael Stipe took the microphone, joining Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Bill Berry for a performance of "Pretty Persuasion." As someone witnessing this unicorn of rock reunions, I found myself torn between capturing the moment on my phone and simply absorbing the once-in-a-lifetime experience with my own eyes.My Athens immersion continued with visits to iconic landmarks like the Murmur Trestle and Weaver D's (of "Automatic for the People" fame), followed by four days at Cracker's annual "Camp in" event. This gathering of devoted fans—affectionately called "Crumbs"—featured intimate performances ranging from David Lowery and Johnny Hickman's acoustic sets to full-band experiences. A particularly moving moment was Ike Reilly's performances featuring his adult children, weaving themes of redemption and musical legacy. We dive into musical history with explorations of Depeche Mode's "Violator" album and its transformative impact on their fanbase in 1990, plus Mike Watt's collaborative 1995 album featuring members of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and the Foo Fighters. "Minute with Jimmy" spotlights The Vapors' surprising return with a new album 45 years after their hit "Turning Japanese," proving great music transcends time.Whether you're a devoted fan of Athens' storied music scene or simply love discovering musical connections across generations, this episode captures those special moments when music history unfolds before your eyes—and why sharing these experiences matters now more than ever.Send us a one-way message. We can't answer you back directly, but it could be part of a future Music In My Shoes Mailbag!!!

Welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions with Jason P. Woodbury. We're kicking off our 2024 season with two very special guests: Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy, discussing their love of and tribute to R.E.M.'s Murmur, which they are taking on tour in February. You no doubt know Shannon from his movies and shows, including some of our favorites like Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Midnight Special, The Shape of Water, and Boardwalk Empire. In his essential read Every Man For Himself and God Against All, director Werner Herzog calls Shannon “the most gifted actor of his generation.”  As for Narducy, you've heard him with Superchunk, Bob Mould, Split Single, and many other projects. Together, they've staged tributes to T. Rex, The Smiths, Lou Reed, and Neil Young and more, and now, they turn their attention to R.E.M. It was a pleasure to speak with these two about the Athens, Georgia legends, along with detours into topics like Lou Reed, Sunny Day Real Estate, and best of all, Michael's run in with Bob Dylan.  If you dig Transmissions and want to chip in so we can make it check out Aquarium Drunkard on Patreon. Jason Narducy is a Chicago guy, but he spends a ton of his time—or at least he used to—on tour, playing bass for both Bob Mould and Superchunk. In early 2020, a local theatre mounted a production of a musical called Verboten, which was based on Jason's life—specifically his time as a pre-teen in a punk band. As a grown-up, in addition to providing the low end for those other great folks, he fronts his own band, Split Single. Under that moniker, Narducy writes the songs and recruits incredible musicians to record and play with him. For the excellent new Split Single album, Amplificado, Narducy once again asked Superchunk's Jon Wurster to play drums, and he summoned the bassist from a certain famous Athens, Georgia band to play as well. That'd be R.E.M.'s Mike Mills, who fleshes out the Split Single sound with his bass and backing vocals on Amplificado, which the trio recorded here in Chicago before the pandemic ground everything to a halt. Mills has kept himself busy since R.E.M. split up about ten years ago, playing with the Baseball Project and playing golf, as you'll hear. (He's earned it, right?) In this conversation, he also talks about a long-gestating solo album, a project that incorporates classical music, and his rescue pooch. In case you missed it, Mills' R.E.M. bandmate Michael Stipe was on the Talkhouse Podcast just six weeks ago—we're two for four! Elsewhere in this conversation, Mills and Narducy talk about the pandemic, of course, as well as hope for the future, passing the baton to the next generation, and the majesty of working with excellent drummers—specifically Jon Wurster and Bill Berry. Enjoy. This episode was produced by Melissa Kaplan. The Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by The Range. Thanks for checking it out!

Jason Narducy can often be found playing bass for Superchunk and Bob Mould's band; on his own, the Chicago-based musician records as Split Single, and he'll be releasing his third full-length, Amplificado, on June 25th. He continues the high-standard of musicianship he finds in his side projects by recruiting R.E.M.'s Mike Mills on bass and his usual bandmate Jon Wurster on drums.  For today's Song of the Day, Narducy sends out a “message of love and support to the LGBTQ+ community,” strengthened through its accompanying video, directed by Jamie Fleischel. In a press release, he shares: The chords and melody for this song sounded like defiance to me. I wanted to write a lyric that matched this sonic mood. The first words that came into my head were “She loves her and he loves him.” So it ended up being an unconventional love song. I'm expressing support and joy for diverse couples everywhere, including but not only my friends that appear in the video. I met Jamie Fleischel years ago but didn't find out until recently that he was making these great videos for Wilco and Jeff Tweedy. He and his family joined me weekly last fall to write get-out-the-vote postcards and we grew close enough for me to feel comfortable asking him if he'd be interested in making a video. I love how he captured the unabashed joy in the song through the footage of the charismatic kids and loving couples. The visual narrative is in line with the lyrics but also evokes what many of us are feeling with vaccines, more sunshine, and the wicked witch out of office: finally something to look forward to. I hope it makes people smile and I hope it makes people feel less lonely. At just 12 years old in the early 80's, young guitarist Jason Narducy already knew about the emotional roller coaster of starting and ending a band. In this case, that band was Verböten, who exploded onto Chicago's punk scene but folded before Jason became a teenager. Over 35 years later -- with Jason establishing himself since as a terrific singer/songwriter via his band Split Single and collaborating with Bob Mould, Robert Pollard and Superchunk among others -- Verböten is now the subject of a full-fledged musical (the songs courtesy of Jason himself) running at Chicago's Chopin Theatre through early March. To coincide with those performances, the band finally has a seven-inch out on vinyl for the very first time to boot. On this episode, Jason chats about working at record stores in his late teens, how his dad played a formative role in his early love of vinyl, the moral battle of separating great art from a problematic artist, why writing songs for this musical has been easier than writing his own, and his recent experience at a vinyl listening bar in Japan. Performance details and tickets for the Verböten musical can be found at thehousetheatre.com. On today's episode I talk to musician Jason Narducy. Jason began his rock career at the age of ten when he co-founded the band Verböten – one of the seminal acts in the Chicago punk scene. He then went on to become frontman/songwriter/guitarist for Verbow, another beloved Windy City outfit who signed a major-label deal with Epic/Sony during the ‘90s alt-rock bubble and followed that up with an ongoing, nearly decade-long run as indie-rock's secret weapon – serving as bassist and backing vocalist for indie-underground icons like Bob Mould, Robert Pollard of Guided by Voices, Telekinesis and Superchunk. In 2011, Jason started writing his own music again as Split Single, with Spoon's Britt Daniel and Superchunk's Jon Wurster as his backing band. He's released two albums as Split Single, Fragmented World in 2014 and his latest Metal Frames, which is just lovely. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
