Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Firefighter Injured As Early Morning House Fire Displaces Family Of 11 In Lawrenceville A Lawrenceville home caught fire early Wednesday after a lightning strike, displacing a family of 11 and injuring a firefighter. Fire crews arrived at 2:08 a.m. to find flames in the attic. While battling the blaze, the roof collapsed, injuring a firefighter who was treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries. The family safely evacuated after spotting the fire, and the Red Cross is assisting them. Firefighters controlled the blaze by 2:30 a.m., using multiple units to prevent further damage. Officials stress the importance of fire escape plans and offer community education resources for safety. STORY 2: Gwinnett police launch summer public safety initiative The Gwinnett County Police Department launched a summer safety initiative on May 20 to boost officer visibility, reduce crime, and enhance community engagement. Key efforts include increased patrols in high-traffic areas like malls and parks, daily crime suppression operations, and visible cruise lights on patrol cars. A major focus is community engagement through weekly Chief’s Walks, where residents can meet police leaders, share feedback, and build trust. The initiative aims to ensure a safe, proactive summer while fostering stronger relationships between officers and the community. STORY 3: Gwinnett celebrates grand re-opening of homeless services center and shelter Gwinnett County celebrated the reopening of an expanded homeless outreach center in Norcross, operated by the Latin American Association (LAA) and HTS. Originally opened in 2021 but closed due to flood damage, the center now offers comprehensive services, including a youth drop-in center, a shelter for young mothers, food, clothing, and hygiene facilities. Staff, many with lived homelessness experience, provide case management, housing navigation, and life skills training. The center aims to address rising homelessness, especially among working families and youth, with a focus on stabilizing lives. The $1.2M annual operation relies on grants and donations to sustain its mission. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: STORY 4: Kemp touts proposed Georgia Power rate freeze Georgia Power's plan to freeze rates for three years, announced this week, was praised by Gov. Brian Kemp as beneficial for customers and Georgia's economic growth. The agreement, pending Public Service Commission (PSC) approval, cancels a planned rate case and follows three rate hikes in recent years due to rising electricity demand. Critics argue the freeze won't prevent increases tied to fuel and hurricane recovery costs, which the PSC will address next year. Kemp dismissed claims of political timing, emphasizing the freeze's role in attracting businesses. A public hearing is set for June 26, with a vote on July 1. STORY 5: Philadelphia Winn Chapter DAR awards Good Citizens and American History Essay Contest Winners Nine Gwinnett County high school students were honored by the Philadelphia Winn Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for their citizenship and writing skills. The DAR Good Citizen Award recognized seniors for dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism, while the American History Essay Contest awarded students for essays on historical topics judged for accuracy, originality, and grammar. Winners received certificates, medals, and monetary awards. The chapter, which meets monthly in Lawrenceville, encourages young people to participate in these contests promoting civic values and historical awareness. This conversation is about reversing the trend of cynicism and erosion of trust in our government through education. Lindsay Cormack, an associate professor of political science and author of "How to Raise a Citizen”, joins us to discuss the state of US Government education in our schools. You may be surprised to learn that every state decides how much time to devote to this topic, and how to test students. Due to the inconsistent and often insufficient government education for millions, our students are leaving high school without a solid knowledge of our government functions and how to be a part of it. How will there be social changes if our young adults don't understand our government, opt out and believe that the system is rigged? Our government was designed to change slowly to ensure stability. We need to ensure our students understand how they can be forces of change through their votes and by joining coalitions and groups that they believe in.  Today, many high school graduates have not read the constitution, aren't aware of who represents them , and they lack the most basic understanding of the division of responsibilities in our government. If our students don't understand the brilliance of our constitution, we can see why they would take it for granted and not do their part as active citizens. Lindsey's book gives parents a framework for having discussions about government and politics with their children. In this conversation, Lindsey shares recommendations for how parents can teach their kids to be good citizens with easy to follow tips  for every age group. This episode is an urgent call to action for all parents to prioritize civic education and to help their children learn how to make a difference in their communities.   We want to thank all teeachers who dedicate themsevlves to our students. *************************** PLEASE HELP US  OUT BY SHARING THIS EPISODE WITH A FRIEND! She has been the manager of Castle Rock Farm in West Chester, PA since 1995 and has handled TB stallions such as Patton, Harry the Hat, Partner's Hero, Power by Far, Awad, Alyten, and Rimrod. The farm breeds and raises about 10-15 baby racehorses each year nowadays, and June handles them from the moment they are born, helping to shape them into what she affectionately calls "Good Citizens." This is especially helpful when they return after their racing careers and June transitions them into their new homes as sporthorses. She is also partnered with Turning for Home, a racehorse retirement program based out of Pennsylvania's Parx Racetrack. Through TFH, June rehabilitates, retrains, and rehomes many OTTBs each year. She prides herself in taking the time to learn about each horse as an individual, and carefully place them in appropriate homes. In this episode, we also talk about how no horse is perfect, and often those with blemishes, old injuries, or the need for a little maintenance gets them passed over by potential new homes. We highlight a current OTTB that June is retraining, "Angel" or Angeli Blu, a 2019 bay TB gelding by Air Force Blue (War Front/Danzig) out of the Irish TB Cabin (Galileo/Sadler's Wells). Angel is the type of horse that you just want to ride every day!June can be contacted through her Facebook page, where she also posts her horses for sale. You can find about Angel in his ad here. Hello Earthlings! In this week's episode, we dive deep into the enchanting world of waste with our host, Lisa Ann and the dynamic duo behind the Trash Magic! Podcast, Oakley Jennings-Fast and Sara Eve Fuentes. Sara and Oakley share the origins of the Trash Magic! Podcast, unravel the complex relationship we have with trash, and challenge the prevailing norms around waste disposal and recycling. Our conversation takes a deep dive into the vital topic of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), unraveling how it compels manufacturers to account for the life cycle of their products, thereby reducing waste and fostering a more sustainable approach to production and consumption. In a world where disposable culture has become the norm, Sara and Oakley illuminate the art of repair — a powerful practice that not only conserves resources but also enriches our connection to the objects we own. Enjoy this fun conversation between three friends about their shared passion for sustainability, science communication, and the circular economy. Restoring Our Faith in Humanity this week is the inspiring story of Nik Robinson and his sons, Harry and Archie, who, motivated by a conversation about plastic pollution, launched a sustainable sunglass line made from recycled plastic bottles called Good Citizens. We salute their initiative exemplifying the power of creative solutions in addressing environmental challenges! Key Topics: Circular Economy and Its Impact: We need to switch from a linear economy to a circular economy, where waste is minimized and resources are reused or recycled to create a sustainable loop, ASAP. This shift is crucial for reducing environmental impact and fostering innovation in product design and waste management.Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): Producers should be held accountable for the entire lifecycle of their products, including post-consumer waste. EPR aims to encourage manufacturers to design products that are easier to reuse, recycle, or dispose of responsibly, thus reducing waste and environmental harm. The Power of Repair and Reuse: Repairing and reusing items is a key aspect of the circular economy- these practices can reduce waste, save money, and support local economies. It challenges the disposable culture and promotes a shift in consumer behavior towards valuing and sustaining the lifespan of products.Community Engagement and Education: The biggest impact comes from community involvement and education in promoting sustainable practices! Sara and Oakley describe how by engaging with the community through cleanups and other activities, they were able to provide accessible information on waste management and sustainability with communities.Voices on The Show: Oakley Jennings-Fast, Trash Magic Co-host, Founder of Level Up Planet LinkedinLevel Up PlanetSara Eve Fuentes, Trash Magic Co-host, CEO of SmartWaste USALinkedin SmartWaste USALisa Ann Pinkerton, Earthlings 2.0 Host, CEO of Technica Communications, and Founder of Women in Cleantech and Sustainability LinkedIn:

His latest work is called The Moral Economy: Why Good Incentives Are No Substitute for Good Citizens.Samuel and Greg discuss how our modern service and information economies pose unique challenges to traditional market principles. Sam shares studies that illuminate the intricate relationship between intrinsic motivation and external rewards. They also debunk misplaced beliefs in equilibrium and Sam emphasizes the need to align economic education with the challenges of climate change. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:A mistake economists make when it comes to the functions of law28:59: Here's a mistake that economists sometimes make: When we think of people acting, we think that we're acting to get stuff. When we make a decision about saving, investment, getting a job, working hard, whatever, shopping, we're getting stuff. Now, we know, you and I, that when we act, we're acting to get stuff, and we're also acting to be something. So, it's not just getting we're talking about; it's becoming. Now, we know, you and I, that when we act, we're acting to get stuff, and we're also acting to be something. So, it's not just getting we're talking about; it's becoming. Now, yes, we want to be someone. We want to be a particular kind of person. Now, if you add becoming to getting, then you have a better view of what humans are like. Now, what is this becoming? Are we just being generous so as to impress other people? Yes, probably; that's part of it. But, speaking for myself, but also on the basis of a lot of psychological research, we're also signaling to ourselves,  we're reaffirming to ourselves that we're that kind of person.Do we treat people as selfish when it comes to policy-making?05:12: If you design policies that treat people as if they're self-interested, you're more likely to get people to act in self-interested ways. So, it's not only that these policies are going to be misguided; they may even be counterproductive and backfire. And they may produce a citizenry which requires increasing regulation and increasing coercion. Because if you generate an increasingly self-interested population by treating people as if they're selfish, well, then you're going to end up with a very, very authoritarian society or chaos.Exploring the relationship between markets, generosity, and rule of law in European history51:52: One of the ways you transact goods when you don't have markets is gift, but another way is theft. Now, I think that the really key idea and my explanation of why Europeans tend to be more generous than people who have less contact with markets, historically talking about Western and Northwestern Europeans most. I think the reason for that is that we've had markets under the rule of law for a long period of time. In a rule-of-law society, you can actually take a chance on trusting somebody. And the reason is the worst possible outcome isn't so bad. They're not going to take your kids. They're not going to burn down your house. Maybe you're going to get cheated once or twice.Embracing incentives, constraints, and community to create change10:46: We'll never solve the problems facing us, whether it's economic injustice, how to handle new innovations, or how to handle climate change. We have to have a combination of incentives and constraints of the traditional kind and appeal to people's desire to be members of the community and to actually do something that they'll be proud of because they're good human beings.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Adam SmithCeteris paribusDavid HumeJohn Stuart MillAlexander HamiltonFriedrich HayekArrow–Debreu modelThomas SchellingWendy CarlinVoltaireJeremy BenthamAlbert O. Have you ever been asked by a political opponent to describe what's wrong or weak about your own side's arguments? That's what Richard and Jim do here. This episode could have been ripped from a Braver Angels training seminar, but to our knowledge, no other podcast has tried this before.Liberal-leaning Richard takes on three hot topics, picked by Jim, where the left is wrong. Jim does the same thing for his side, discussing three examples picked by Richard. The ground rules are simple: No "your-side-ism". When describing the failings of their own side neither host was allowed to criticize their opponents. If they do, a loud bell rings. Listen to find out how many times the darn thing goes off!The six topics are: - Liberals try to do too much and as a result their policies backfire. - Conservatives fail to challenge populism, Donald Trump, and stand up for democracy. - The left hugely underestimates the cost of their spending programs. - The right ignores the huge increase in public debt. - Liberals are too quick to decide that anyone who disagrees with them is not only misinformed but evil. - Too many Conservatives deny the reality of climate change. One big failure in American politics is that neither side understands the other. Both Democratic and Republican voters have major misconceptions about what supporters of the other party actually believe. This weakens the arguments of both, and has a dire impact on public policy making and the quality of debates.Issues discussed by Richard and Jim include homelessness in California, recent changes in the Republican Party, the alarming rise in government deficits and debt, and the changing nature of the conservative debate over climate.Among articles mentioned in this podcast are Jim's writing about The New Green Right and Against The Wind about problems with wind energy and coverage about homelessness in The Atlantic and New York Times.Recommendation: Richard read the new book by Richard Haass: "The Bill of Obligations— The Ten Habits of Good Citizens".This podcast is the third episode of our series on American polarization funded in part with a grant from Solutions Journalism Network. When we consider the meaning of citizenship, most Americans usually think about individual rights. In this episode, we hear a bold call for change. Our guest, Richard Haass, says that if democracy is to survive, we must re-envision citizenship and consider our obligations to one another.  He argues that the greatest threat the country faces comes not from foreign adversaries but from none other than ourselves. Finding common ground and healing bitter divides, he says, requires placing obligations on the same footing as rights. "We get the government and the country we deserve. Getting the one we need is up to us." A highly experienced diplomat and policymaker, Dr. Haass served in the Pentagon, State Department, and White House under four Presidents, Democrat and Republican alike. His new book is "The Bill of Obligations. The Ten Habits of Good Citizens". For 20 years Richard Haass was president of the nonpartisan Council on Foreign Relations. Today he serves as CFR's president emeritus.

We discuss how we, as citizens, can fulfill our role in the social contract.   The United States is a country founded on an idea about equality, about opportunity, and about freedom. Rights alone will not guarantee the smooth functioning of a society, but must be coupled with obligations. These include being informed, getting involved, civic education, and rejecting violence. If 1 or 2% more Americans were to get informed and involved in American politics, we could have very different outcomes.
