Oh how I love to hear people's stories and what allows them to experience God that encourages their faith. You might be tuning in this week with more of a skeptical ear thinking “I haven't experienced God to the fullness that others have talked about” and for that I just want to encourage you to keep showing up! Keep inviting Jesus in and keep asking him to strengthen your faith. I just know he's gracious enough to meet you where you're at. And if you let him, like really let him in, it'll be one epic journey! So today we have a really fun conversation to dive into with filmmaker and director, Brent Gugel. We just so happen to talk about the amazing film, Free Burma Rangers, which is a documentary film exploring the extraordinary 20-year journey of missionaries Dave and Karen Eubank and their kids, as they venture into war zones where they are fighting to bring hope. The film itself is a testimony to people trying to walk after God, full of their own limitations, sins and mistakes, facing real enemies AND asking “CAN LOVE WIN?!” We talk about the film as well as radical ways God moved during the process. Even some of the other “no way but God moments” of Brent's career. Brent Gudgel is a documentary film director and founder of the ministry Deidox. His credits include the documentary Free Burma Rangers which won Best Feature at the Justice Film Festival in NYC, was in theaters nationwide, and is now on Amazon Video. Previous work has been on Showtime, Hulu, for the Olympics, and featured during the Super Bowl. With over 20 years of experience, Brent has also directed and consulted on 250+ short documentaries for organizations such as Toyota, LA Clippers, Union Rescue Mission, Crisis Pregnancy Centers, Saddleback, Willow Creek, Goodwill, and IJM, among others. He currently resides in Merced, CA with his wife and two growing children. There comes a point when we embrace what God is doing in our lives, twists, turns and unknowns. And I believe we ALL desire for tangible evidence of God working IN our lives to at least show us he's real, right?! And the point isn't the miracles in and of themselves…. These are unexpected and always come in different ways for EVERY ONE just because God is a personal God. But we want to keep in might that in pursuing him, we want to magnify HIM, NOT the signs. I love the journey we're all on! God is so unique and so intricately involved in our lives. I'm confident that when people experience the love of the father, they'll want nothing less and no counterfeits either. I'm so excited to share more of Brent's story with you today. I hope his experiences give you the courage to believe God for more, as well! So without further adieu, Why dont you pull up a chair, grab that cup of coffee and dive in with us to the places between. www.deidox.org - All about Deidox. Kevin Jones never expected to graduate from college. In fact, after graduating from high school in 1988, he made the conscious decision not to pursue higher education – even though his three sisters had all gone on to university studies. “School and I were not friends,” recalls Jones. “All the way through elementary school, then in high school, I just wasn't the typical kid. I was the nerdy type that wasn't accepted. So by the time 1988 came around, I had made up my mind. I was done with school.” Jones went so far as to hold a mock funeral in the backyard of his mother's house, digging a hole and burying his textbooks in it. He had decided that the blue collar lifestyle suited him best, and spent the next three decades drifting from one job to the next. “Truck driver, security guard, nurse's aide – I did anything you can think of that's underpaid and undereducated.” It wasn't until 2014, when the Los Angeles native found himself unable to pay rent and ended up homeless on the streets of Atlanta, Georgia, that Jones decided to turn his life around. “It was March 14, 2014,” he says. “I'll never forget the date. That's when I had the revelation that life was getting serious. All of a sudden, the light bulb came on. I asked myself, ‘What are you doing with your life? What happened?' From then until now, I was on a path to change things. I didn't know that the path would include about four and a half years of homelessness…” “I thought I would be stuck in that lifestyle forever,” he says. “And now I'm considering options for graduate school. It's amazing.” Upon losing his home in Atlanta, Jones drifted along, sleeping in his car or abandoned warehouses before adapting himself to living in local homeless shelters. “I had to learn the system, because every shelter has one,” he says. “For example, you have to be in line for bed every day at the same time. You really have to figure out your life based on that system.” Jones moved from shelters in Atlanta to those in San Jose, Calif., before ending up on Los Angeles' Skid Row. It was while on Skid Row that Jones dedicated himself to self-improvement. “I told myself I had two options,” he remembers. “I can stay here at rock bottom or I can go in the opposite direction. I started working on a plan of growing up.” While staying at the Union Rescue Mission in downtown Los Angeles, Jones enrolled in a program there aimed at helping get clients off the streets. “They have a program for anybody that's serious about not being homeless,” says Jones. “It's a one-year program. If you go through the program, by the end of it, they guarantee you an apartment and a job. They don't just kick you out and say, ‘You're on your own.'” He started working at the shelter while still living there. Within a few months of starting the program, Jones was able to move into his own apartment. Again, it's a date he'll always remember. “I moved out of the Union Rescue Mission on June 18th, 2018,” he says. “I jumped in a taxi over to the apartment that they had for me in Compton. I've been off the street ever since!” Jones' return to school happened almost by accident. He was walking through Lueders Park in Compton while a career fair was going on. As he walked past the Compton College booth, the woman working there asked him if he wanted to enroll in school. “I looked at her, and strangely, I considered it,” says Jones. “I walked over to the booth and I thought, ‘You ain't got nothing to lose, right? I signed up, and the next thing you know, it's Fall 2019 and I'm enrolled in junior college. Then I started seeing some good grades—grades that I wasn't even getting in elementary school.” “All of a sudden, my brain turned on and I could do the work. As I kept seeing those A's and B's coming in, I thought, ‘I can do this, and I'm going to keep working and see how far I can go.'” --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/matt-brown57/support

Rev. Andy Bales has  fought to end homelessness in Los Angeles County for more than three decades.  His tales of life on the streets of Skid Row illustrate the emergency situation in which Los Angeles has found itself. An average of 5.5 people die daily in LA County when they are  unhoused. Bales and his team at Union Rescue Mission have provided housing, counseling, job programs and much more. Seniors end up homeless for a variety of reasons. When they do they find themselves in a situation that is said to reduce life expectancy by nearly 30 years.  This episode is a frank discussion with someone who has literally given his life to this cause--losing both legs in the process. Hosts Nicole Franklin and Bryant Monteilh were honored to spend this time with someone who knows first-hand--and who tries to implement when he and his team can-- the steps needed to put an end to this growing human tragedy. To volunteer and/or donate, please visit Union Rescue Mission @ urm.org.This episode first aired on KBLA Talk 1580 in Los Angeles.

Today we sat down with Joe Gardner, a retired police officer and resident of West Covina, to talk about homelessness.  He provides his first hand experiences combined with keen thoughts and insights into the homeless situation, which today is impacting us all more than ever.   Joe's work with the homeless spans decades and stretches back to his work as a beat officer and subsequently to his assignment on the Homeless Outreach Program of the Santa Monica Police Department.  In our conversation Joe covers both the causes of homelessness as well as current and proposed solutions from elected officials and civic leaders.   We also cover the history of government run mental health treatment and the legislation and court cases that substantially impact how we deal with mental health and homelessness today.  Joe shares his time, knowledge and expertise widely, including with the Union Rescue Mission in Los Angeles.  He focus in on creating and sustaining solutions that help the homeless successfully transition to stable living conditions.  Joe discusses options such as tiny homes, treatment centers, temporary living centers, and much more. This conversation was enlightening for me as the host and I think it will be equally so for any listener.  You'll find few people better versed in the matter of homelessness – its history, the present, what works, and what doesn't – than Joe Gardener.

How does one move from having a successful career as an attorney to becoming the President and CEO of the Orlando Union Rescue Mission? Well, for Freddy Clayton, it didn't happen overnight. He began his career as an attorney and then worked in the business sector for several years. He moved to Orlando and eventually began volunteering at the mission. He was asked to serve on the Board of Directors and shortly thereafter, he was asked to serve as the interim President and CEO. That interim role became a permanent calling, and he has been serving the homeless community ever since. Freddy downplays his story, and he says he doesn't know how he got to this place, but his life is an example of what one's life can look like when they journey with Jesus, one day at a time.

We're back after a short break! Our guest today is Melissa Wasserman, psychologist, speaker, consultant, and trauma expert. In this wide-ranging episode, we talk about her untraditional career journey and how the pandemic has caused a lot of chaos in our personal and work lives. Melissa also shares her best piece of advice about navigating challenges, cultivating resilience, and some tools that you can use to implement in your daily life.  Learn more about Melissa and her story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com. “One of my biggest values and such a big part of my identity is being relational and being human.”    03:52 Melissa grew up in a Jewish family and her parents both worked in the real estate industry. She was always very active as a child and valued meaningful relationships. She attended religious school growing up and attended religious studies in college.   During her years in college, Melissa had a class about American religion and its impact on the Vietnam War. She learned about family traumas in military families and realized that this was her calling in life. She became a licensed psychologist and a trauma expert. “Communication is a mega resilience factor in systems to buffer the impact of mental health symptoms.”   16:47 Melissa shares some advice on how to navigate through challenges.  Reflect on previous challenges that have already passed. How did you go through those? What have you learned? Identify some strategies that you already used successfully in the past and think about how could you use those in your current situation. Be aware of the warning signs of burnout. Don't wait until you feel completely burnt out, practice self-preservation and self-care continously.   Melissa is a trauma expert and specializes in generational family traumas. In her experience, family traumas are stronger in families where they don't have good communication with each other. Communication is key and it is a huge resilience factor, so it's important to learn how to communicate well and listen to each other.   Melissa started her business just a few months before the global pandemic. This presented a lot of challenges for her, but she loves the dynamic work environment and wearing many hats as a business owner.  The Final 3 Questions     What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?   Patience - not just with others but mostly with herself. Making mistakes is part of the human experience, so we need to be kind to ourselves and learn from them.     What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you?   Purpose and Community. These two words are greatly interconnected to Melissa as she finds purpose in community and through connectivity.      What do you hope others take away from your story?   That we are all human and we are all resilient. Be gentle and kind to yourself and others.  About Our Guest, Melissa Wasserman Dr. Melissa Wasserman (AKA Dr. Meli) is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (PSY30983).   She has specialty in traumatic stress, particularly how trauma-related challenges impact interpersonal relationships (e.g., couples, families, social, work relationships). While trauma can include a wide variety of experiences and challenges, her expertise includes working with individuals who have experienced interpersonal/relational trauma, war-related trauma and violence, civilian and military sexual trauma, and traumatic loss.  She is trained in evidence-based and trauma-informed interventions including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Families Overcoming Under Stress (FOCUS). She is also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).   Along with her clinical work, she is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Pepperdine University's Graduate School of Education & Psychology where she teaches master's and doctoral level psychology students.  Additionally, Dr. Meli is the Co-Director of the Pepperdine Union Rescue Mission Counseling Center, a collaboration between Pepperdine University's Graduate School of Education & Psychology and the Union Rescue Mission, a faith-based mission located on Los Angeles' skid row.  Dr. Meli is a member of the American Psychological Association, Society of Indian Psychologists, the International Society for the Study of Traumatic Stress, and Psi Chi Psychological Honors Society. Officer Joseph is a law enforcement consultant who has worked for the LAPD for over 24 years, twenty-two of those years in downtown Los Angeles' Skid Row community. From patrolling the streets or providing a shoulder for the community to lean on to meeting with public figures and advocating for change, Deon is driven to create an environment conducive to change for the homeless and those trying to reclaim their lives from the grip of addiction. He is an honest, faithful, passionate and caring man – traits he pours into his daily life and activities. For the past ten years, Deon has served as Senior Lead Officer in charge of safety of the people that live on Skid Row. Deon was able to help change the culture of Skid Row along with his fellow officers, via a grassroots approach as opposed to handcuffs. Over time, Deon discovered that he could not simply make arrests with any hopes of making lasting changes on Skid Row. Coupled with reducing crime in Skid Row, Deon helped build a better relationship between the LAPD and the homeless population they serve.  Deon is considered a subject matter expert on Skid Row crime and culture and has been sought out by multiple news organizations, filmmakers, and politicians to speak on issues related to Skid Row.  To accomplish changes to the culture of Skid Row, Deon collaborated with the community to develop programs such as the “Just Like U” Mentor program, which began in 2006 at the Union Rescue Mission.  The program was designed to motivate kids living in poverty to see themselves beyond their negative circumstance by placing mentors in front of them who have become successful, but whose lives mirrored the lives of the children.   In 2008, Deon created an education safety and self-defense seminar focused on the women of Skid Row called “Ladies Night.”  The goal of this program was to ensure that the women of Skid Row understood that no matter their race, criminal background or socioeconomic status, they had a fundamental right to report domestic violence and sexual abuse committed against them, and they would not be penalized for doing so.  In 2009, Deon began an outreach program with seven other officers that included passing out hygiene kits, as well as drug, housing, and job program information to the homeless to guide them away from the streets and into area programs. Working with housing programs within and outside of Skid Row, Deon was able to help house over 100 homeless people over eight years who were truly ready to take a chance and change their lives for the better. Deon along with his fellow officers were responsible for a 40% reduction in overall crime in Skid Row, and a 32% reduction in death from 2005 to 2009. Deon, with the help of the Skid Row community, has aggressively focused crime-fighting efforts on drug dealers who are not homeless and come down to Skid Row to sell drugs and alcohol inside and outside of the drug programs. Deon goes beyond policing the community of Skid Row, he has become a part of it, establishing relationships with a community that most believed would be impossible to do. Deon is proud to be able to show love to the people of Skid Row from an unexpected place. “I just want to be a strong voice in ending homelessness, saving women from being victimized and changing the negative culture and perception of police in the community,” he remarks. Although Deon does not engage in his efforts for accolades, he has been honored citywide and nationally for his work.  Deon's selflessness was instilled in him by his heroes, his parents. His parents dedicated their lives to helping others whether they were homeless, abused children or anyone else who needed support. Embracing the early examples and life lessons of his parents, Deon personifies a legacy of community outreach and support that he hopes his own three sons will pass onto the world.    Find Officer Joseph here:   http://www.deonjoseph.org/   Stay tuned for more great shows on the CJEvolution Podcast   Patrick
