"Solitude, I reflected, is the one deep necessity of the human spirit to which adequate recognition is never given in our codes. It is looked upon as a discipline or penance, but hardly ever as indispensable, pleasant ingredient it is to ordinary life, and from this want of recognition come half of our domestic troubles" - Freya Stark, The Valleys of the Assassins and Other Persian TravelsWelcome to Episode #102:Today I share the story and personal journey behind my solo travel adventures, how I navigated my writing, creativity and family life to create the time and space to go on the adventure - to really listen to my heart, to trust the whispers, and to just do it anyway. This share is an honest account of my journey as a woman navigating relationship and family life and my dream to travel and explore Italy. Ernest Hemingway once said “All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know”, here today on the podcast I let that sentiment run through my words and my voice, and this account of this stage of my life. The decision to travel solo made an immense ripple effect in my life (at the time I didn't know that) in my writing, in my creativity and in my choice to later create a podcast on Italy because I loved Italy…. It has been an incredible experience, a work in progress and a lot of fun connecting with every one along the way.Enjoy xxVisit the Shownotes for BOOK suggestions on Solo Travel and a few tips if contemplating such an adventure....Find all Shownotes at michellejohnston.lifeBuy my new book: In the Shadow of a Cypress - An Italian Adventure Book Link for my MichelleJohnston.lifeGo in the draw to win an original watercolour painting from my new Book! Throughout history, artists and writers have been drawn to the Northern Italian hill town of Asolo; some say it's because it's the “city of a hundred horizons,” I think it's because it's the home of Asolo Prosecco! At one time, you might have caught a glimpse of poet Robert Browning, actress Elenora Duse, or writer Freya Stark sitting enjoying a glass of bubbly at one of the cafes in this Pearl of the Veneto; I can almost guarantee the liquid in their glass was Asolo prosecco! In this episode, I'm taking you with me to Asolo to meet a few people who are making Asolo Prosecco what it is! We‘ll begin with a masterclass led by Wine Educator and Journalist Gianpaolo Giacobbo, who will explain what Asolo prosecco DOCG is exactly. Then Ugo Zamperoni is next. He is the President of the Conzorio of Asolo Prosecco - which is the association of producers and grape growers. Then we are off to meet a few producers of Asolo Prosecco: Dennis Bordin from the Tenuta d'Asolo Progress Country & Wine House, Ermenegildo Giusti of Giusti Wine, and then we finish with Tenuta Baron's Andrea Sbrissa. I interviewed them all in situ, so alas, there is no video podcast this week, but you can find a video guide to the town of Asolo and a selection of the vineyards and historical sites you can visit when you are next in town. You can find it on my YouTube channel, youtube.com/lushlifemanual. Our cocktail of the week comes straight from master mixologist Samuele Ambrosi, owner of Cloakroom Cocktail Lab and Knowledge Hub in Treviso. We met at Venice Cocktail Week last year, and I am thrilled to include one of his cocktail creations. It's called the Made in Italy and is a little different from what you might think of as a prosecco cocktail - because it's savory! The cocktail of the week is Samuele Ambrosi's MADE IN ITALY.INGREDIENTS 50ml Basil and "datterino" tomatoes cordial*150 ml Asolo DOCG Prosecco extra BrutMETHODAdd all the ingredients to a mixing glassAdd iceStir, stir, stirStrain into a champagne glassGarnish with a tomato basil cracker*Basil and "datterino" tomatoes cordial*In an electric blender, add 500gr cherry tomatoes and 10/12 fresh basil leaves and blend everything for a few minutesLeave the liquid all together for 10/15 minutes in the fridge. Then strain all and put 1 tsp white sugarKeep the cordial in the fridgeBest before 10/12 daysYou can use the leftovers (tomato peel, basil leaves, etc.) to make the garnish! You'll find this recipe, more prosecco cocktail recipes, and all the cocktails of the week at alushlifemanual.com, where you'll find some of the ingredients in our shop.Full Episode Details: https://alushlifemanual.com/asolo-prosecco-podcast-----Become a supporter of A Lush Life Manual for as little as $5 - all you have to do is go to patreon.com/lushlifeLush Life Merchandise is here - we're talking t-shirts, mugs, iPhone covers, duvet covers, iPad covers, and more covers for everything! Elise Wortley is an Englishwoman on a mission; not as a modern day explorer but as an authentic amazon from centuries past. Elise is planning her third journey following in the footsteps of famous women who conquered mountains and oceans from Scotland to the Himlayas. And what makes her journeys different is that she is dressed and equipped in authentic clothing of that period which so far has been the early 1900s. This includes heavy long woolen coats, leather shoes and a wooden backpack; none of which makes for easy going across difficult terrain and in challenging weather conditions. And there's also altitude sickness to cope with too. But none of these adversities have deterred Elise who was first inspired by reading about Alexandra David-Neel who climbed the Himalayas and Nan Shepherd who explored The Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland. Her next adventure begins in April 2022 when she travels to Iran to retrace the exploits of Freya Stark on her incredible journey to the Valleys of the Assassins. While all these women made history in their time, Elise is also making history of her own inspired by her sheroes.Host: Chris StaffordRecorded: March 3, 2022For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women's sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. Today we look at the globetrotting life of Freya Stark, a woman who overcame a traumatic childhood only to willingly place herself in danger to explore the most remote regions of the middle east. This episode was written over a year ago so it was just as much a journey of discovery for me as Freya's travels were for her!Guest Host: Emma Heathcote See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Welcome to Episode #9 Amalfi, Campania......Travel Writer and Author Freya Stark once said, “To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world. You are surrounded by adventure. You have no idea of what is in store for you, but you will, if you are wise and know the art of travel, let yourself go on the stream of the unknown and accept whatever comes in the spirit in which the gods may offer it. For this reason your customary thoughts, all except the rarest of your friends, even most of your luggage - everything, in fact, which belongs to your everyday life, is merely a hindrance. The tourist travels in his own atmosphere like a snail in his shell and stands, as it were, on his own perambulating doorstep to look at the continents of the world. But if you discard all this, and sally forth with a leisurely and blank mind, there is no knowing what may not happen to you.” From the Book - Baghdad Sketches: Journey's Through IraqTraveling from Siena to the village of Amalfi was quite a journey and a fresh chapter of my travels around Italy. Amalfi is ancient, rugged, beautiful and fabulously itself. I loved the bougainvillea cascading on faded architecture; the cacti and the palms and the baskets of lemons and ceramica on display in the village. The days were a world away from my real life yet a delight to share and write about. Please find Show Notes at: www.michellejohnston.lifePlease subscribe, rate and/or review if you enjoyed this podcast.Instagram: @awriterinitaly and @theyellowhouse__About A Writer in Italy Podcast:Five years ago Michelle Johnston traveled to Italy to create space for herself and her writing. Welcome to Episode #8 Siena, Tuscany Book Share: In the Shadow of a Cypress: An Italian Adventure. Chapter 6 and the Italian Adventure continues.....After wonderful days exploring Florence and Fiesole to a sweet journey through the Tuscan Countryside to Siena by rail.Returning to Siena after many years it was wonderful to be sitting and sipping a cappuccino staring at the beauty of the Palazzo Pubblico on my first morning in the Centro Storico of this Unesco World Heritage medieval city. Siena is an obvious choice if visiting Florence. An hour and a half away on the train or by car through majestic countryside and you find yourself in a city like no other. Once upon a time it was a stop on the pilgrimage route as the pilgrims came from the south to Rome along the Via Francigena. With its fan shaped piazza, Gothic Duomo, wonderfully dark secretive streets, the non stop celebrations of the Palio Race and the many Renaissance treasures there is much to discover and enjoy inside and outside of the medieval walls. Please find Show Notes at: www.michellejohnston.life© 2021 A Writer In Italy - travel, writing, art and lifeMusic Composed by Richard Johnston, © 2021Instagram: @awriterinitaly and @theyellowhouse__Next stop the Amalfi Coast for Episode 9.....days spent exploring the villages of Amalfi with trips to Ravello, Positano and more.....About A Writer in Italy Podcast:Five years ago Michelle Johnston traveled to Italy to create space for herself and her writing.
