This week, Pastor Dennis Allan continues our Lent series by talking through a story found in John 18-19. Jesus is brought by the Jewish religious leaders to Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor in Jerusalem, in the hopes that Pilate will condemn Jesus to death. The religious establishment doesn't have the authority to execute Jesus on their own, and they're hoping to coerce Pilate into doing their bidding for them. Despite Pilate saying multiple times he finds no reason to condemn Jesus, he still relents, giving the assembled mob exactly what they want. It's a story where we see Pilate, seemingly the most powerful person in the story based on his political position, overlook what is obviously true and good and, instead, participate in injustice. The same temptation Pilate faced is one many Christians face today. If we speak up or act up we might get cast out by people we once considered friends. What are we to do and how are we to be truth tellers in a world that needs people who are both unafraid and courageous?

Finding new friends is challenging at any age, but it seems to get particularly more difficult as we get older. As we age out of experiences and environments that are more conducive to socialization (i.e., school), we naturally find less opportunities to make friends. Even in areas like the workplace, most people seem less open to making friends outside of certain environments. We also find that we are more conscious of the people we make friends with. We focus on finding connection over quantity, and we are inclined to not take a risk on a new friend if we don't think it's worth it. But that doesn't stop us from continuing to try and find new connections - whether at parties, cultural events, or just in our day-to-day lives. Where have you found success in finding new friends? He was homeschooled from kindergarten through high school graduation before attaining both a Master of Human Services in Child Protection and A Master of Arts in Eastern Classics. He has worked with high school students in homeschool communities and is co-founder of the viral website HOMESCHOOLERS ANONYMOUS.An advocate for children and abuse survivors, Ryan has run numerous social media campaigns for child advocacy organizations. He is a “child liberation theologian,” and his upcoming book is called The Kingdom of Children.I met Ryan when he participated in a panel at the Conference on Religious Trauma earlier this year, discussing some of the potential pitfalls of religious and homeschooling.
