Faint Stars in a Faint Galaxy: II The Low Mass Stellar Initial Mass Function of the Boötes I Ultrafaint Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy by Carrie Filion et al. on Thursday 22 September This paper presents improved constraints on the low-mass stellar initial mass function (IMF) of the Bo"otes I (Boo~I) ultrafaint dwarf galaxy, based on our analysis of recent deep imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope. The identification of candidate stellar members of Boo~I in the photometric catalog produced from these data was achieved using a Bayesian approach, informed by complementary archival imaging data for the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. Additionally, the existence of earlier-epoch data for the fields in Boo~I allowed us to derive proper motions for a subset of the sources and thus identify and remove likely Milky Way stars. We were also able to determine the absolute proper motion of Boo~I, and our result is in agreement with, but completely independent of, the measurement(s) by textit{Gaia}. The best-fitting parameter values of three different forms of the low-mass IMF were then obtained through forward modeling of the color-magnitude data for likely Boo~I member stars within an approximate Bayesian computation Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. The best-fitting single power-law IMF slope is $alpha = -1.95_{-0.28}^{+0.32}$, while the best-fitting broken power-law slopes are $alpha_1 = -1.67_{-0.57}^{+0.48}$ and $alpha_2 = -2.57_{-1.04}^{+0.93}$. The best-fitting lognormal characteristic mass and width parameters are $rm{M}_{rm{c}} = 0.17_{-0.11}^{+0.05} cal M_odot$ and $sigma=0.49_{-0.20}^{+0.13}$. These broken power-law and lognormal IMF parameters for Boo~I are consistent with published results for the stars within the Milky Way and thus it is plausible that Bo{"o}tes I and the Milky Way are populated by the same stellar IMF. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.10461v1

The LA Galaxy signed a 21-year-old as their youngest Designated Player in club history. But when we first were looking at Kevin Cabral, we had assumed the Galaxy were going to get him under a different Mechanism. On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Sophie Nicolaou discuss why that all changed and what that means for a team that is now out of Designated Player slots. And does this really mean the end of Cristian Pavon? Let's face it; Major League Soccer does a horrible job of explaining all the rules to everyone. Josh will do his best to give you an advanced crash-course in why Cabral isn't going to be signed under the U-22 Initiative and why the Galaxy are still calling that a win. And how much are they paying him? If the reports are accurate, Cabral just got his first big payday. But why is Samuel Grandsir also another important signing to the success of Cabral? And why are the Galaxy so sure on a 21-year-old that has a lot of upside but not a lot of experience? During the show, Josh and Sophie will make sure they get their thoughts in on the Galaxy's preseason draw with the Colorado Rapids and tell you why Saturday's game against Real Salt Lake could be a crucial match. But they're also going to highlight some Galaxy II signings that have some first-team impact, get you through another retro fashion drop and make sure you're following along with the Galaxy's new supplemental development deal. Maybe your kids will be at Dignity Health Sports Park to be assessed by the Galaxy Academy coaches. We've got a jam-packed show brimming with the details you need to explain what the Galaxy did with Cabral. Go forth and teach the masses!

Military Update news :U.S. Panic : China tests aircraft carrier KlLLER ballistic missiles in South China Sea (Video/Thumbnail Picture just For Illustration) U.S. calls Chinese missile tests in South China Sea 'disturbing' The Pentagon on Wednesday condemned weekend missile tests by China in the contested South China Sea. Over the weekend, China carried out an anti-ship ballistic missile test and fired at least one missile into the South China Sea, which contains several hundred tiny islands claimed by China, Taiwan, Vietnam and other countries. Among them are the Spratly Islands, where a buildup of Chinese military installations has been seen. Observers said the missile may have been a DF-21D anti-ship ballistic missile, known as a "carrier killer" and capable of crippling an aircraft carrier. China previously moved land-based anti-ship cruise missiles to it's military stations in the region, a crucial shipping route where $3.4 trillion in goods travel each year. "Of course the Pentagon was aware of the Chinese missile launch from the man-made structures in the South China Sea near the Spratly Islands," Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Dave Eastburn said. "What's truly disturbing about this act is that it's in direct contradiction to President Xi's statement in the Rose Garden in 2015 when he pledged to the U.S., the Asia-Pacific region, and the world, that he would not militarize those man-made outposts." Introduction This is the Northern 90 Podcast with Pat Sweet, Episode 16. Welcome to the Northern 90 Canadian Premier League Podcast, covering the beautiful game in the great white north. For more Canadian Premier League content, head over to Northern90.ca. That’s Northern Nine Zero dot ca. Welcome Hello, Canada, and welcome to the Northern 90 Canadian Premier League Podcast! I'm your host, Pat Sweet. In this week's episode, I interview Julian Buscher of Calvary FC. First, of course, let's dig into this week's CPL news and results. News Results Since we last spoke: Thursday, May 2 Pacific FC 1 - Valour FC 2 Saturday, May 4 HFW Wanderers FC 2 - Forge FC 1 Cavalry FC 2 - York 9 1 Valour FC 1 - FC Edmonton 2 Five teams tied for top spot with three points with FC Edmonton and Calvary FC leading on points per game. York 9 and Forge are the only teams who've yet to pick up a win, putting them at the bottom of the table. League leader in goals: Kadel Thomas League leader in assists: Trick question - there are 8 players with one assist each Most tackles: Ndzemdzela Langwa with 18, and 13 of those won Obviously, there's more to come, but I'll keep an eye on these things as the season progresses. News HFX Wanderers FC has signed a former member of the Vaughn Azzurri in defender Matthew Arnone. Arnone joins former Azzurri teammate Thomas Skublak. Arnone will provide defensive depth, and will no doubt be called on for scouting notes ahead of the Wanderers' matchup with the Vaughn Azzurri in Canadian Championship action starting May 15. Of note is the fact that York 9 FC, the other CPL team facing off against a semi-pro team, in this case, A.S. Blainville, also has a former member of their opposition on their roster - Diyaeddine Abzi. There was an interesting article in the Hamilton Spectator about Forge FC's schedule congestion and playing 4 games in 13 days. The article made the point that by the end of that stretch, their spring season will be half over. Other Business I went to my first CPL game! Forge FC visited Halifax last weekend, and I had a blast. A few observations: Great game - high energy. The crowd was into it in a big way. ONEOKODAI and PeterSchaale we’re excellent for the home side. Kyle Bekker had a much better game today. The place was packed. You could hardly turn around in there. Quote of the night was from the school kid behind us saying that seeing this game was a dream come true. I met two of the guys from @FromAwaysHFX and one of the guys from @SeaToSeaPodcast and they are awesome I got to go to the press conference after the match, and it was interesting - neither coach was particularly happy. Have a listen to what the coaches had to say. Stephen Hart was pleased with the win, but still sees a lot of room for improvement. Bobby Smyrniotis was obviously looking for more from his squad. So, I had a blast, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more games in the future. If you don't have plans to see a game yet - do it. You'll be amazed at the level of play and how great the atmosphere is. If you want even more CPL content, including the most important headlines delivered straight to your inbox, then sign up for the Northern 90 Supporters' group. When you join, you get a weekly newsletter with the top headlines, podcast notifications, access to private supporter's group Facebook group, and much much more. Also, it's free. Check it out at northern90.ca/join. Next up, I have a chat with Calvary FC's Julian Buscher on his deck. Interview with Julian Buscher I caught up with Julian a few weeks prior to the beginning of the CPL season. He's a really interesting player with respect to his experience prior to coming to the CPL - he'd featured regularly for DC United of the MLS and was captain of L.A. Galaxy II, and is someone that has come up on the podcast a couple of times already as someone to watch this year. Here's my interview with Julian Buscher. In talking to Julian it was clear to me that he saw the CPL as an excellent opportunity to reinvigorate his career. This is one of the more interesting things for me as an interviewer - the question of why people join this league. Some are getting their start, others are trying to get back into the groove, while others are making this where they spend their prime and make their mark. I really want to thank Julian again for his time and his candor! If you have ideas for someone you'd like to hear on the podcast, please do let me know in the show notes at northern90.ca/episode16. Next up, the mailbag. Mailbag You know how this works - you send me mail and messages and I read every single one of them. If what you send is extra good I read it on the podcast. Last week, my question of the week was about what you thought the good, the bad and the ugly were in the first week of the CPL. I got lots of good responses, but I'll share a few of the best on the show here: Febrian posted in the Northern 90 SG Facebook group that he thought the Good: positive play used by all 5 teams so far. With some highlight-worthy stuff. Bad: number of players cramping. Players tackling are not so refined that it often cross to the point of recklessness. Ugly: Bekker late tackle and that no disciplinary review has been made (yet). The Haber: back to back post. (he's not that bad otherwise though) Joe wrote me an email to say: The good - no team seems to be running away with the league so far. - the officiating has been outstanding. - officiating #2: not restricted to only males. Very impressed that a female was the head ref in Halifax. She was very good. - player conduct - so far very little if any diving The bad - player maturity - mostly in the Valour PFC game. One Valour player was chirping at a down player. I think he got a yellow and hen chirped the ref. Gale was caught on camera telling his player to stop (which was good). - HFX vs Forge - not quite sure what was going on at the end of the game. There was a lot of blatant time-wasting followed by pushing and shoving on both sides. Do not want to see that The Ugly- nothing from the league yet on Kyle Bekker's elbow. It doesn't matter if he's a perceived star. It needs to be dealt with - fans chanting 'ref you suck'. Really? Let's leave the hockey hooliganism at the rink, which even there is not good. Heard that at a few games. Question of the Week Thanks so much for your answers to the question last week. This week's question: What has surprised your the most so far about the league? Leave a comment at northern90.ca/episode16 Write to me at pat at northern90.ca Fire me a note on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram @northernninety Of course, I love hearing from you on any topic - so whatever you want to share, just drop me a line. The Week Ahead There are a few games to look forward to over the next week or so: Wednesday, May 8 Pacific FC Visits Hamilton to play Forge FC and Valour FC take on Calvary FC at Spruce Meadows on These game will have been played by the time this episode airs. Sunday, May 11 Halifax travels to see Valour FC in Manitoba at 2:30 local time Sunday, May 12th, Cavalry FC is at Forge FC at 1PM local time. FC Edmonton takes on Pacific FC for their first game of the season at Clark Stadium. All games will be broadcast on One Soccer, and the Calvary versus Forge game will also be broadcast on CBC TV, CBC Sports, and CBC Gem. Take note also that the Canadian Championship gets underway next week with Halifax Wanderers FC visiting Vaughn Azzurri at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughn, Ontario. Meanwhile, York 9 FC will travel to Blainville to take on A.S. Blainville. Finally, Cavalry FC and Pacific FC will duke it out in Westhills stadium. All games will be played on Wednesday, May 15th, and will be available through One Soccer. Outroduction That's all we've got for the show today. Next week, we'll be talking all about the Canadian Championship, and digging specifically into the non-CPL teams that are competing in the first round. I've got interviews lined up with the President of A.S. Blainville and former Impact de Montreal player Wandrille Lefevre, as well as some recordings from the Vaughn Azzurri, so you'll definitely want to tune it to that. If you liked the show, don't forget to subscribe to it, and when you do leave an honest review. That helps me make the show better and others find it. Also, if you've been enjoying this show, you should join my supporters' group. CoG Scarves/Stickers: http://www.CorneroftheGalaxy.com/Shop CoG Studios, CA -- The LA Galaxy don't have a game this week. So that means we'll get to talk about things that normally get lost in the hustle and bustle of the weekly grind. Your host Josh Guesman, will start off with some LA Galaxy II talk. The club has been busily signing players and some of the names you've heard before, but most of them you haven't. What does the Galaxy II schedule look like to start? And if you could go to any promotional night, would it be wine over puppies -- only the most hard-hitting questions on this show, obviously! Next, Josh will transition over to the senior team where the Galaxy are training ahead of a bye-week. But with Vancouver on their minds, we'll be sure to give you an update on the six injured Galaxy players, and why the club could actually be without eight players when they finally step foot on the carpet at BC Place. Plus, why didn't the Galaxy appeal Ashley Cole's red card? Sigi Schmid had something to say about it and CoG's very own Larry Morgan was at training to write it all down. Finally, Josh will talk about alternative lineups for Vancouver and why Jonathan dos Santos might just be the guy to fill the no. 10 role even after his brother returns from injury. And with the LAFC game approaching at the end of the month, we'll tell you why you shouldn't be worried. And it has nothing to with form, or quality of the team. We love talking Galaxy and we're so glad that you could join us for another Thursday (or whenever you're listening) full of soccer! Music Provided by Back Pocket Memory

CoG Studios, CA - The LA Galaxy have only hours remaining on the 2017 preseason as they get ready to host Supporters' Shield and U.S. Open Cup Champions FC Dallas on Saturday at StubHub Center. And this show will do a lot to get you ready for that game and what you can expect from a starting lineup. But first, your host Josh Guesman fills you in all the Galaxy news that you may have missed. Including three new signings from LA Galaxy II and what that means for the senior team. You shouldn't be surprised by these moves, after all, we told you to expect the depth of this roster to be filled by "Los Dos." And Speaking of the second team, we're going to be joined by LA Galaxy II Head Coach Mike Muñoz. Mike was just promoted from the academy to taking the job in USL and the Galaxy couldn't have picked a better guy. Mike will update you on how they'll be filling out their roster, how important the Galaxy Academy is, and what style and philosophy they plan on playing. We'll also talk to Mike about his team's plan to hold tryouts in London and Manchester over the summer. What does he hope to get out of that? And why does he think the Galaxy can be successful looking for future players in one of soccer's birth places. Then, Josh will be joined by Fox Sports and ESPN Radio Broadcaster, Dave Denholm. He's also the guy who started the original Galaxy podcast, and he's been a guest Co-Host so many times it's hard to count. But Josh and Dave will regale you with their first meeting, face-to-face, and what it was like to share lunch with Jelle Van Damme at the Galaxy's Media Luncheon. There's some great insight into why Jelle Van Damme is the right guy to be Captain of the Galaxy and why he's the right guy to have in a Galaxy kit. They guys will also talk about Dave's thoughts on the team going into a very difficult matchup with FC Dallas. Finally, Josh gets you ready with a predicted starting lineup for the game against Dallas. And reminds you to GET TO THE GAME EARLY -- you've been warned. This is a matchup that pits the Galaxy up against one of the toughest teams in MLS. And it's a game that the Galaxy will be lucky to keep close. FC Dallas is coming off a CCL victory with a ton of momentum and it will be up to a weakened Galaxy team to try and slow them down. Are you ready for LA's first kick? Today, your hosts take you back through the demoralizing draw with Seattle, and highlight LA Galaxy II's advancement in the USL Playoffs. We know it's a buy week, but we've got more to talk about, without a game this weekend, than we normally do. Your hosts Josh Guesman and Cory Ritzau will start by recapping the draw with Seattle. It was 90 minutes of good soccer, followed by 30 seconds of "who was covering that guy?" They'll talk about how this is probably a pretty good result considering the form Seattle has found. The guys will also ask questions regarding the goalkeeping and highlight some of the better performances on the night. Is this team capable of sitting back when they're ahead? Then it's off to talk about LA Galaxy II and their successful advancement over OC Blues FC in the Western Conference. Josh and Cory will play post-game audio from Head Coach Curt Onalfo and LA Galaxy II Striker, Ari Lassiter. Next Josh will be joined by CoG: From the Box Co-host, Adam Serrano to get his views on everything that's happened with the LA Galaxy including Seattle, Los Dos, injuries, International call-ups and anything else they can think of. Finally, it's a free-for-all segment with Josh and Cory going over every bit of LA Galaxy news they can think of. Including an argument about whether or not Landon Donovan's recent comments concerning the USMNT are even relevant for LA Galaxy fans. No game this weekend? Apparently that doesn't matter. Because this show is absolutely packed. Music Provided by Back Pocket Memory.

On today's show we discuss the upcoming weekend games for LA Galaxy and LA Galaxy II. We're joined by Fox Sports Announcer Mark Rogondino, LA Galaxy II Head Coach, Curt Onalfo, and Corner of the Galaxy writer, Wendy Thomas. It's another packed show for your listening pleasure. Josh may be hosting the show by himself but he's enlisted plenty of talented and smart people to fill in the gaps he's missing. First, we'll take you over the the 3-2 victory over FC Dallas. Did the defense almost ruin the party again? Are there lessons to be learned? And, just like always, we'll have plenty of post game sound so you can hear directly from the players just minutes after the game had concluded. Then Josh is joined by Fox Sports Announcer, and 7-year voice of the LA Galaxy, Mark Rogondino. Mark called the win over FC Dallas and he'll give you his thoughts on the LA Galaxy and what he saw from the booth. Then we'll switch gears and dive into the LA Galaxy II playoff game that takes place on Saturday against the Orange County Blues. Head Coach Curt Onalfo will talk about his teams' win over Sacramento last week and what he's expecting from his team at the StubHub Center Track & Field Stadium on Saturday. This should be a great game and it's not going to be one you'll want to miss. Finally, to get us through the standings, the schedule and the big game on Sunday night for the LA Galaxy, Josh is joined by Corner of the Galaxy Writer, Wendy Thomas. Wendy may be making her debut on the podcast, but she's bringing pure LA Galaxy knowledge to the table and will get you fully prepared for the Seattle clash. It's an absolutely packed show filled with all the LA Galaxy goodness you've come to expect from this show. Music Provided by Back Pocket Memory and Drop City Yacht Club
