For a few days there was nothing but discussion about an ad put out by the Gillette shave company (called a "short film" by its creators, 2 minutes long), that was made up of various scenes in which men were depicted as mistreating women or encouraging aggressive behavior. Hodges and Vowell discuss the implications of this view of men, how the term "toxic masculinity" is used in the ad, and whether or not it gave a fair view of men. Since both men wear beards, and thus don't need the products that Gillette makes, they might not have had any contact with the ad except for the fact that everyone and his Aunt Matilda was talking about it. See what you think. (We suggest watching the ad before hearing the podcast.)
What kind of man do you want to be? What kind of a man do you want your man to be? In Luke Gifford's opinion, most men can get very clear about who they want to be and how they want to show up in the world, but they might need a few weeks with the question before they can answer it. And then they might need a year to connect with their own emotional framework. This week on The Puddcast Luke and I discussed helping men become aware of their emotions, mastering fear and anger, moving beyond toxic masculinity and trying to raise kids who'll face their monsters. And yes, of course, we talked about the Gillette Ad. This is part 2 of 2.Support the show at patreon.com/jonathanpuddle

On today's podcast hosted by our Opinions editor Gene Cole, our staff discusses toxic and positive masculinity in light of the recent controversial Gillette Ad that was published earlier in January. Gene is joined by our Arts editor Winona Young and our Photo editor Chris Ho.
Gillette released a new one minute, 48 second commercial on Twitter recently that has generated a lot of divided, emotional reactions from consumers. The ad tackles the issues of “toxic masculinity” – bullying, sexist talk, and violence – linking them to their signature tag line “the best a man can get.” It's the latest example of a brand taking on social issues of the day. While the ad has generated some criticism, with some men saying they will no longer use their razors, has this move been overall a win for them? Host Dan Loney is joined by Michael Kehler, a Professor of Masculinity Studies at the University of Calgary in the Werklund School of Education Research, and Hank Boyd, a Clinical Professor in the Marketing Department at the University of Maryland’s Smith School of Business, to discuss the strategy behind the commercial on Knowledge@Wharton. A report from Harry's, A Gillette competitor, showed us in 2018 what makes men happy. Gainful employment was the major criteria for whether a man would be happy or not.But the report also showed that men are moral and good and that they strive to be heroes, fathers, and father figures. They strive to be the best and to protect. But Gillette's ad depicted men as bad, evil, as "toxic."This is likely why the social justice ad was so controversial.Instead of highlight positive masculinity, it showed men as bad and as aggressors.Support the show (http://timcast.com/donate)

You've probably heard of the recent ad from Gillette that attempted to counter traditional stereotypes about masculinity and invited men to improve themselves, in an attempt to sell overpriced razors. Like many, I am very much not a fan of the ad or the message it sends. However, I believe there's a deeper meaning behind it that is getting lost in the massive amounts of Internet slapfights spawned because of it, something that I believe was the intent of the ad all along. I talk about this theory and why everyone arguing about this (including me) is giving Gillette exactly what they want.
On this week's episode of the Loyrad Media Podcast we discuss: Australia Day, this years lamb ad and our opinions of Gillette's ad.

By now, you've probably seen this picture... ...and heard about Gillette's new ad, The Best Men Can Be Maybe you've even heard about the American Psychological Association's Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Boys and Men, which some applaud and some condemn. (Two recent headlines: "Toxic Masculinity is Under Attack. And That's Fine," from a left-leaning website, and "The American Psychological Association Has Made Choosing a Therapist Easy," from a right-leaning site.) Discussion of these videos, pictures and guidelines have dominated social media recently -- for better and for worse. For better: People are publicly discussing masculinity and the expectations placed on boys and men. For worse: Many people are jumping to conclusions without looking at the actual source material. In many corners, "discussion" has devolved into shouting. In this episode, Jen & Janet dive in & discuss: The APA Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Boys and Men The Gillette ad, The Best Men Can Be The encounter between the boys of Covington High School, tribal elder Nathan Phillips and the Black Hebrew Israelites Note: On 1/21/19, Twitter suspended an account which spread the initial 1-minute video of the encounter in DC after realizing that the account was likely part of a network of anonymous accounts that were working to amplify the video. Soon after that initial, short video sparked outrage, a longer, nearly 2-hour video of the encounter was posted on YouTube to an account called "John Duncan." As of 1/23/19, no one seems to know who recorded or posted the video. One journalist Jen spoke with said, "We all have serious questions about the origins of the vids and related content and the fact that finding a human attached to any of it proves elusive."
