Poet Glenis Redmond has learned to receive beauty without hesitation. Being diagnosed with cancer and amid COVID, she came up with the idea to visit South Carolina's State Parks with her grandson as a life-affirming way for them both to share this poetic journey. Her new book, “The Song of Everything: A Poet's Exploration of South Carolina State Parks,” is a pocket-sized collection of poems exploring the enduring connection between the natural world and our internal landscape. In sharing these Park experiences, Glenis explains to her grandson (and us) that goodness and well-being exist worldwide, especially in nature. "There, we can find our truest nature—our highest nature," said Glenis. You will cherish her treasured moments as she shares them with us here. Glenis has spent almost three decades touring the country as a poet and teaching artist. She explains why poetry is the mouth that speaks when all other mouths are silent, and she invites everyone to rediscover the wonders of the world around us, the stories they have to tell, and the lessons they have to teach us.Only on Speaking of Travel. Come celebrate the launch of Cheryl Boyce-Taylor's collected poems The Limitless Heart. Encompassing the breadth of Cheryl Boyce-Taylor's astounding career, The Limitless Heart is a time capsule of the boundless love, care, grief, and fortitude that make her work so stirring. With deep empathy, thoughtfulness, charisma, and lyricism, Boyce-Taylor's work explores questions of immigration, motherhood, and queer sensuality, among other themes. Grief is both an anchor and a door throughout Boyce-Taylor's poetry, as seen in Mama Phife Represents, a hybrid of memoir and verse on the death of her son, Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor of A Tribe Called Quest. Questions regarding Blackness and Black womanhood in the United States are stitched throughout her books, and Boyce-Taylor leans into a more overtly defiant political register in her latest work, We Are Not Wearing Helmets, while maintaining the connective spine of the Trinidadian dialect that appears throughout all her work. Selections from these books, as well as her other poetry collections, appear in this new volume. Curated from Boyce-Taylor's body of work, The Limitless Heart encapsulates her progression as a writer throughout the decades of her highly successful career. There are still hopes that a national Erebus memorial will be ready in time for elderly family of those killed in the disaster to see it. The Culture and Heritage Ministry says flooding erosion means it can no longer be built in Auckland's Dove Myer Robinson Park. Deputy CEO of the Ministry of Culture and Heritage Glenis Philip-Barbara said that had the memorial been erected there, they wouldn't have been able to guarantee the safety of visitors. She said they couldn't take a risk with people's safety, and that they couldn't guarantee that there wouldn't be more slips in the future due to the weather damage. Glenis Redmond, the "Afro-Carolinian poet" teamed up with British painter Julyan Davis  to produce a spoken word album called, "Cymbee." It's named after an African mermaid. Her legend traveled along with enslaved Congolese people who were brought to the shores of South Carolina.  In this episode we'll hear how Julyan first encountered the folktale and how Glenis weaves her own ancestry and identity in its retelling.

When you're a kid into art, it's hard to imagine doing that and getting paid for it like a job. (We all know that old adage about starving artists). James Navé Twice 5 Miles Radio welcomes poet Glenis Redmond to the Twice 5 Miles Radio microphone. Glenis and Navé explore the liberating idea that your artistic destiny belongs to you in this lively discussion. Glenis, a nationally recognized poet, understands well that her artistic destiny belongs to her, just like your artistic destiny. Best of all, Glenis is living proof that her hypothesis is true. Glenis grew up in Greenville, South Carolina, back when adults encouraged proper young girls to maintain a demure profile which naturally included no loud speaking. Of course, when your artistic destiny belongs to you, and you're a naturally gifted spoken-word poet like Glenis, it's easy to imagine a bit of tension might emerge. Glenis knew she wanted to be a poet from the start, but like so many young people looking for respectability, she confirmed for a while. She kept her poetry in journals, maybe read her poems to a few friends, quietly as she thought she should. But then, one day, Glenis said to herself, your artistic destiny belongs to you; now what are you going to do about it? Indeed, my friends, Glenis Redmond did something about it. When you listen to this interview, you'll find out precisely what Glenis did and how well it worked out. Besides telling you how she made her artistic destiny work for her, Glenis spends a fair amount of time in this interview explaining how you can make your artistic destiny work for you. She also lifts the idea that you don't have to forsake your current life to achieve your creative destiny. Guess what you can make it happy right there at your kitchen table, or while you're sitting on your porch, or in your living room a few minutes before you go to bed. Finally, Glenis explains that you must commit to your destiny to make your artistic destiny work for you. Of course, Glenis explains, this means you must show up and do the work, but you can do it over time, in short or long stretches. Glenis believes that if you move in the direction of your artistic destiny, your artistic destiny will move towards you, a dance if you will. Enjoy the interview.
