Have you ever wondered what it takes to leave a stable, high-stress job to pursue a passion that lights up your soul? Not only that, what about taking that passion and using it to build a career with your passion of travel? Justin Liebman transitioned from a high-stress finance job to a fulfilling career as a yoga teacher. Justin, like many others, found solace and passion in yoga, which ignited most when he began studying yogic philosophy. After years of dedicated practice, he took the leap in 2018 to leave his corporate finance job to pursue teaching yoga full-time.His journey wasn't without its challenges. Justin shared that the transition period was fraught with financial uncertainty, teaching only a handful of classes every week. However, his passion kept him going, and within six months, he was able to build a sustainable teaching schedule. Justin traded financial security for happiness, a decision he never regretted. One of the most transformative aspects of Justin's journey has been the practice of meditation. Meditation helped him cultivate patience and navigate life's chaotic moments with a clearer mind. With numerous retreats now available, choosing the right one can be overwhelming. In our conversation, Justin shared invaluable tips:1. Find the Right Teacher: Ensure that the teacher's style and approach resonate with you.2. Check the Schedule: Look for retreats that align with what you want from the experience, whether it's an immersion in yoga or time for excursions.3. Understand Your Goals: Determine whether you want a serene retreat with less activity or a complete immersion into yoga practices.Justin's story is a testament to the transformative power of yoga and travel. He encourages everyone to take the leap and embrace the uncertainties that come with following your passion. Today we'll meet world-renowned yoga master Daniel Hickman … but what I initially found interesting is that he's not a Buddhist monk, or a ninja Sensei from Japan. He's a dude I grew up with in suburban Maryland, and we actually went to high school together in the 80s.Dan's journey began with studying martial arts and then working in professional theater. He later became an expert rock climber, but eventually pursued even deeper enlightenment by studying with monks to become an accomplished expert in yoga and meditation. However his karma was ultimately an invitation to work with traumatically injured troops at Walter Reed NMMC, where he served for over a decade. The relationships he forged with our wounded warfighters are truly inspiring and demonstrate how effective yoga and meditation can be. They also demonstrate the incredible power of human connection between a gifted yoga master and the soldiers who miraculously survived IED explosions and enemy attacks. His vivid stories reveal the fluid, and often untapped bond between our mind and body.Hickman also shares some basic yoga poses and meditation techniques that can help alleviate the anxiety, stress and depression that we all experience from time to time. For more on multi-disciplinary yoga and meditation with Daniel Hickman, check out:https://danielofthesun.com/Go Walter Johnson Wildcats and WJHS Class of 89! Can you trust that you've done enough even when there's more to do? If your answer to that question is no, my hope is that listening to this week's guest will help you answer differently. We're conditioned to be productive, to achieve more, to do more to tick more things off our list. There's always more to do, there always will be. But what sort of a life are we living if we never stop to reflect, to recharge, to unwind, to rest? So many, including this week's guest, know all too well that if we don't do it for ourselves, eventually, we're forced to stop through burnout, sheer exhaustion, or illness.Olivia Raheem shows us how slowing down, stillness, and intentionally taking care of ourselves gives us the space to breathe and recognise that we are enough, despite what we do; and that we can gain freedom from the ‘always on' culture that tells us otherwise. Here are links to share:www.octaviaraheem.comwww.pauserestbe.comRest resources: https://www.octaviaraheem.com/rest-resourcesThanks for listening to this episode of “Well, hello anxiety with Dr Jodi Richardson.”How you can help: If you enjoyed this episode, or gained some useful insight from it, please share it with a friend or family member. Are meditation and yoga offered to prisoners merely to have them acquiesce to being incarcerated and degraded? Or can they help prisoners interrogate the political and social structures that incarcerate and degrade? In Freedom Inside? Yoga and Meditation in the Carceral State (Oxford University Press, 2022), Farah Godrej explores the tension between narratives of quiet contemplation and social or political liberation in meditative and yogic practice that the carceral condition exacerbates or exposes. Godrej resists the impulse to treat personal wellbeing and systemic critique as if they are in a binary relationship. By leveraging her own knowledge of yogic philosophy and practice of yoga, and drawing on Gandhian political theory, she offers an account of how incarcerated people in the United States can and do sometimes practice meditation or yoga subversively by going beyond the palliative logics of prison officials and the organisations that train and bring volunteers to teach them. The meaningful question, she shows, is not whether meditation and yoga should be taught inside, but how they are taught. By describing how, her book reveals the contingent possibilities that meditation and yoga provide incarcerated people to cope with degrading coercive conditions and also sometimes hinder mass incarceration, while deferring or foreclosing other possible freedoms. Farah Godrej joins this episode of New Books in Interpretive Political and Social Science to discuss access, ethics and risk in prisons research; ethnographic observation and scholarly activism inside; the character of resistance to physical and structural violence in the carceral state; the nexus between activism and academic work; joys of co-authorship with research participants; the delicacy of checking research participants' meanings; and the importance of self-care in research on violent and opaque institutions. Nick Cheesman is associate professor in the Department of Political and Social Change, Australian National University where he co-convenes the Interpretation, Method, Critique network. He is also a committee member of the Interpretive Methodologies and Methods group of the American Political Science Association. Learn more about your ad choices. This week I am interviewing Addie deHilster. Addie is a mindful movement teacher whose teaching prioritizes mindfulness from the Vipassana tradition. She blends many styles of movement including Yoga, somatics and chi gong to facilitate embodiment. We discuss how Yin yoga in many ways is already a very accessible form of meditation. You will learn how to apply concepts from Vipassana including compassion, and non-resistance to your practice and how to apply Yin components such as body awareness and regulation to your meditation practice. We know that meditation is so beneficial, but many of us lack the time, knowledge or confidence to really commit. I know this discussion will inspire you to turn the things you are already doing in your Yin practice into your own mindfulness practice.Addie deHilster is a Mindfulness Meditation Teacher and C-IAYT Yoga Therapist. Her passion is teaching movement practices that "unlock" mindfulness skills, and helping students gain traction in their meditation practice so they can be more present for their lives. She is a graduate of the Mindfulness Mentor Training with Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach, the InsightLA Mindfulness Facilitator Training, and the 2014-15 Mindfulness Yoga & Meditation Training Program at Spirit Rock Meditation Center. She has studied Yin Yoga with Bernie Clark, Paul Grilley, and Sarah Powers. How yoga and meditation can help your game. By grounding your attention in your body and separating yourself from your mind, body, and emotions. You can become sensitive to how you feel about your decisions and actions. When you're sensitive to how you feel about your decisions and actions, you can better calibrate to be more ethical and thus make you feel better about how you behaved. The realization that all masculine ambition has, at its root, the desire for choice of mate. You then realize if you're not having a choice of mate, your decisions in life and behaviors are not as ethical as they could be. You would feel better ethically if you were providing mate choice for yourself, without compromising other areas of your life. Yoga and meditation allows for inner separation, so that we can change our patterns of behavior and communication and how we relate with the opposite sex. We must look for better examples of how to be, so that we can upgrade our patterns, after we have separated from them. It is important to have mentors, teachers, role models, and inspiring characters to study while we practice yoga and meditation, while on this path of personal evolution. She comes from a multi-faith family and has been exposed to diverse cultures through her extensive travels and her time living in India, Singapore, and London. These experiences have helped mould her thinking and have taught her valuable lessons in the importance of understanding, accepting and celebrating cultural differences. Although she initially trained as a Chartered Accountant, she found her calling much later in life through Yoga, which she has used to help better herself and now uses to help many others. Deepa has completed her Hatha Yoga teacher's training at the Arsha Yoga Ashram in Kerala, India and her Yin Yoga teacher's training in Singapore. She has also lived in a Buddhist monastery for a silent meditation retreat. She has also developed ‘A Beginners Guide to Meditation'- a program that introduces various techniques of meditation, from which participants can choose and apply the ones that best resonate with them. Before she found yoga, Deepa had a 12-year stint in the corporate world, making her fully aware of and sensitive to the challenges and stresses it poses. Her own journey and training coupled with her extraordinary passion, has led her to teach yoga and meditation with the sole purpose of uplifting people's wellbeing and bettering their physical and mental health. Deepa continues to build upon her learning everyday through self-practice, self-reflection, observation of her students and also keeps upskilling herself by attending various training programs, workshops, retreats, and immersions. Yoga. It was something I avoided because it was hard and slow and I felt awkward. Now that I'm older the slow, stretching and stability aspects of yoga appeal to me.
