Happy Fourth of July! Your pop culture legal team are back to look into the films of Steve Rogers aka Captain America. His role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is usually as the moral center but how does he fair as a law-abiding citizen? Sarah and Meredith dive into how much medical information Cap should have received before taking the super soldier serum; if Bucky Barnes' brainwashing works towards an insanity defense; and the necessary types of superhero classification that would be needed for the Sokovia Accords. Also is one of our hosts a secret mutant?!? They are joined by attorney Mike Godwin, who works at the R Street Institute and is famous for "Godwin's Law" which states: "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1." --Leave any questions you have for the duo in the comment section at TheArtImmortal.com --Leave a review on iTunes so more people can find the show and learn their fictional rights. Artwork by Meredith Rose Opening music by Adam Lord Edited by Austin Lugar Sarah and Meredith will be back to discuss the legality of Home Alone.

Abby and Jim begin by discussing the horrific treatment of children detained on the Southern border, which both agree will be a defining moment in American history for generations to come, and not in a good way. Jim then introduces Abby to the concept of Godwin's Law, the Internet standard for Hitler analogies, and how Godwin himself has stepped into the discussion. They then discuss the recent presidential debates, and Jim reveals the secrets to winning a debate. (You're welcome to try this at home.)
And they're back. Back in the House of Mirrors, where the conversation begins with a serious analysis of how Godwin's Law applies to Permission to Podcast. The gang naturally progresses from there to Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon Separation and of course, Game of Thrones, which leads to the question of watching nudity with your friend's wife. Before it's all they cover the NBA Finals, iWatches, and lessons learned in driving school. The night is wrapped up with a lively discussion about extreme selfies and how to brake that fall - Stop! Hammer Time!
Mandy Connell, Lori Lynn Barker, Susan Witkin and Dahlia Weinstein talk social media and how it's gotten so ugly. They hit on vague booking, name calling, angry typing a response then deleting it, Godwin's Law, obsessing over haters, gently correcting a friend, Victorian Hair pictures, tattoo preservation, internet mobs, keyboard warriors, and black hair. For real, this went all over the place.
The conclusion to the worst people ever series winds up falling to Godwin's Law. This is one of those rare cases where cliche, popular opinion, and received knowledge happen to be absolutely right: Hitler was as bad as human beings get. Aggressor and instigator of world's most deadly war. Instigator of thuggery and riots. Murderer of former friends. Head of the coldest, most clinical and industrial, act of mass murder in history. Prancing ranting provocateur. Mama's boy.
Godwin's Law is Not a Law. And yet, it probably should be followed in most cases. (re-do of past episode that contained an error). The surprising history of the rule that one should not discuss Nazis in debates, and the person who is not a scientist nor a lawmaker who came up with it. Also, when you can violate the rule and what the rule says about meme-driven discussions in 2017.
Adolf Hitler is long dead. Nevertheless, his name is still uttered every day as a rhetorical smear. By drawing some parallel to Hitler and the Holocaust, however dubious, many charge others with guilt by association. This unfortunate cultural twitch has even been canonized as Godwin's Law or reductio ad Hitlerum. At the top of the list, Hitler's supposed Christianity is often raised by the critics of religion. But was Hitler a Christian? When you get down to the bottom of it, what’s the truth? Was Hitler in any meaningful sense a “Christian”?
This episode Evan and David talk Celeste and David’s new PS4 (he's playing Bloodborne), the parties and wacky indie games of the Game Developers Conference, game dev unionization efforts, and their most anticipated Spring 2018 anime. Topics include: The Daily Isin Dose, the Ed Chavez anime, and Godwin's Law but for game streamers and slurs. Send us feedback at podcast@anigamers.com! Last Friday on Techdirt, we posted video from the World Hosting Days, in which Mike Masnick sat down for a talk with Mike Godwin — a.k.a. the originator of "the Streisand Effect" meeting the creator of "Godwin's Law". As promised, we've got the audio from the event for this week's podcast, so if you haven't watched the video (or you just want to revisit it) tune in for a fun discussion about the history and changing meaning of these now-famous terms. No matter how little you know about history, you know something about Adolf Hitler. And if you want to shut down an opponent, you can claim that Hitler said/did/believed the same thing. Godwin's Law exists for a reason. But Hitler remains a persistent mystery on one front—his religious faith. Atheists tend to insist Hitler was a devout Christian. Christians contend that he was an atheist. And still others suggest that he was a practicing member of the occult. None of these theories is true, says historian Richard Weikart in his new book Hitler’s Religion: The Twisted Beliefs that Drove the Third Reich. Delving more deeply into the question of Hitler’s religious faith than any researcher to date, Weikart reveals the startling and fascinating truth about the most hated man of the twentieth century: Adolf Hitler was a pantheist who believed nature was the only true “God.” In this episode we discuss the following: How Hitler’s Frankenstein's monster religion of pantheism, eugenics, Germanic folk belief, and even Islam served to create the most notorious monster of the twentieth century Hitler constantly lied, so if he took a dose of truth serum, what would he say about his religious beliefs Why members of Hitler's inner circle (especially SS leader Heinrich Himmler) loved the occult so much that they regularly consulted astrologers...until Hitler stamped out the practice Why Hitler went on a propaganda crusade to white-wash Christian symbolism out of old photographs How atheists and conservative Christians both misunderstand what Hitler believed How Hitler actually was intent on destroying Christianity Check out Richard's book Hitler's Religion by clicking here. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Richard Weikart is a professor of modern European history at California State University, Stanislaus, and Senior Fellow at the Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture. He has published numerous scholarly articles, as well as five previous books including The Death of Humanity: and the Case for Life (Regnery, 2016) and From Darwin to Hitler: Evolutionary Ethics, Eugenics, and Racism in Germany. He has appeared in several documentaries, including Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. In addition to scholarly journals, his work has been featured and discussed in the Washington Post, the Philadelphia Inquirer, National Review, Christianity Today, World magazine, BreakPoint, Citizen, various radio shows, and other venues. Weikart lives in Snelling, CA, with his wife and children. TO HELP OUT THE SHOW Leave an honest review on iTunes. Your ratings and reviews really help and I read each one. ORLY-EP0145A - When to fight, when to run Welcome to ORLYRADIO #145 recorded Friday February 24th, 2017 - where we dismantle the current events for your edutainment through mostly rational conversations that make you go ‘Oh Really’! I’m your host Andy Cowen, with my usual suspects, Stephen Griffith, Amber Biesecker, Fred Sims, Daniel Atherton, and JP.Audience Feedback From Previous Shows: From listener Kristen R.Hello. I liked the discussion that went on in this episode and wanted to contribute with two questions. The first question is: When is violence the appropriate answer?Every time I ask this question, people immediately snap back with "Violence is NEVER the answer! NEVER!!!" I feel that this is a short sighted answer with no thought or consideration put into it.How bad would things have to get before violence becomes the appropriate answer? What kind of events or situations would that look like which would warrant a violent response? My second question is: When is it time to flee the country? How bad would things have to get before the decision to flee becomes essential? What would have to happen that would cause you to start packing up and flee right now?(for me personally, it would be the beginning construction of a US/Canada border wall and/or the sanctioned arrests of LGBT people, the community which I belong to)I'm sorry to do this, but I must invoke Godwin's Law of citing Nazi Germany. Our country has some initial parallels of how things became bad there and how things are becoming bad here. I'm curious if the German citizens of that time had similar discussions. How bad would things have to get before they fled or became violent?Personally, several friends, acquaintances, and I of the LGBT community have been making plans to flee just in case. L wastes no time trying to resist Godwin's Law in Episode 1 of SolidarityCast. After reading (most of) Volker Ulrich's Hitler: Ascent 1889-1939 (best known for its NYT book review gone viral) L will tackle whether it's fair to equate the Cheeto-in-Chief with the fuhrer.
Hoo boy. Y'all watch that political debate last week? Well for some reason we did, and our seasoned video gamers/political pundits are more than willing to give you our informed opinion! First though, we lament pumpkin spicing, we lament Street Fighter trying to rootkit our PC's, and we lament 2016 in general. But there's some HAWT discourse on politics, and video-game people donating money to politics, which may or may not end with someone invoking Godwin's Law. So that's fun too! Lastly the No Man's Sky saga continutes, whether you wanted it to or not. Catch the political fever! Special guest Eric Schwitzgebel joins David and Tamler to discuss the moral behavior (or lack thereof) of ethicists. Does moral reflection make us better people, or does it just give us better excuses to be immoral? Who's more right about human nature--Mencius or Xun Zi? What did Kant have against bastards and masturbating? Plus, we talk about jerks, robot cars, and killing baby Hitler. (Godwin's Law within 1:42--might be a new record for us). In this episode, the gang repeatedly violates Godwin's Law by comparing everything to the Nazis/Hitler. And they also discuss two papers which deal with understanding the complicated originations of evolutionary groups. Meanwhile, James discusses his future career options, Amanda willfully mispronounces the plural of LEGO, and Curt explains why he is never funny. Nathan Gilmour moderates a discussion with David Grubbs and Michial Farmer about Internet discourse, the vices that seem to inhere in Internet exchanges, and why a long online discussion is probably at some point going to involve Hitler. Although technology is always on the table, rhetoric is really the name of the game. Among the writers, ideas, and other bad habits we discuss are psychologizing one's opponent, posting manifestos on Facebook, making people into devils, exhibiting classical virtue in online life, and acknowledging just how wise John Mark Reynolds can be when he gets Platonic on your head.
It has been recently reported that someone who was a member of a university RPG club many years ago, allegedly committed a murder. Reporting of this in the media reflected a shocking level of ignorance that serves to remind RPG enthusiasts that as far as we have come since the Dark Dungeons days of the 1980s, much work remains to be done. Many hobbies are misunderstood, but very few misunderstood hobbies are so frequently targeted by popular hysteria. We posted this reaction for humor value, more than anything else. It almost need not be said that nobody at Polymancer® Studios, Inc. actually believes anything being said here. Naturally, the invocation of the name of one infamous historical figure was not a violation of Godwin's Law, simply because, again, it was all meant in good fun.LinksThe classical music compositions that were used in this special episode can be downloaded from the following sites.Musopen.com, an excellent source of public domain classical music recordings, including many that have been recorded professionally, on modern digital equipment,Archive.orgThe compositions, in the order of appearance, are:Piano Sonata No, 2 in B-Flat Minor, Op. 35 by Frédéric Chopin, 3rd movement, "Marche funèbre: Lento." Often popularly called "The Death March.""Ride of the Valkyries" from the beginning of Act III of Der Walküre by Richard Wagner. This piece is frequently referred to as "The Flight of the Valkyries." Many people will be familiar with it from Apocalypse Now and Looney Toons. Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67 by Ludwig Von Beethoven, 4th Movement: Allegro. Not as well known as the symphony's famous first movement, this is still one of the best musical expressions of triumph ever written, and a good way to end the show on a high note.
