What if #4: What If… Zombies?!

The Marvelous Madames Podcast

Hank Pym tries to find his lost wife, Janet VanDyne, in the quantum realm. When he does, he discovers that she is infected with a quantum virus that has made her a flesh-eating zombie. Janet returns to the world and the zombie infection spreads like wildfire. The Avengers are infected, leaving only a few heroes to try and save the earth. Along with a returning Bruce Banner, Spider-Man, Happy Hogan, Wasp, Sharon Carter, Bucky Barnes, Kurt, and General Okoye are on a mission to Camp Lehigh in hopes of finding an antidote. After battling a lot of zombies, including Cap, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, and Wong, most of the gang makes it into Camp Lehigh, thanks to a heroic Hope VanDyne. They find Vision, who is immune to the virus, working on a broad spectrum cure for the virus. Using the Mind Stone's power, Vision has already cured Scott Lang, whose talking head is alive & well. But Vision has a secret: he is keeping his wife, Wanda Maximoff, alive as a zombie at Camp Lehigh. Vision has been feeding her pieces of King T'Challa, whom he kidnapped for that purpose. Wanda is unleashed, but Vision finds his conscience at the last moment. Vision removes the Mind Stone from his head. While Dr. Banner & Hulk create a diversion, Spider-Man, T'Challa, Kurt, and Scott head to Wakanda, the only place with the technology to harness the Mind Stone for a global cure. However, we then see Zombie Thanos, who appears ready to snap his fingers any moment.    Episode 5 stars Jeffrey Wright, Mark Ruffalo, Paul Rudd, Danai Gurira, Paul Bettany, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Evangeline Lilly, Chadwick Boseman, Jon Favreau, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, David Dastmalchian, and Hudson Thames.   For more details on the film/TV references that spill out of Kris's (and occasionally Amy's) brain, as well as links to other podcasts, visit the episode page on our website: Episode page link Email us at themarvelousmadames@gmail.com Follow us on Twitter  Instagram  Tumblr

The ladies are beside themselves with this one… many tears were shed. A being known only as The Watcher takes us into an alternate universe where Steve Rogers never became Captain America. When Steve is injured, Peggy Carter receives Dr. Erskine's serum to become the world's first super soldier. Fighting back against Col. Flynn and his misogynistic attitude, Peggy mounts an attack against the nazis, led by Johann Schmidt, and reclaims the Tesseract for the Allies. Along with Howard Stark & Steve Rogers in a HYDRA stomper suit, Captain Carter liberates a group of POWs, which includes Bucky Barnes and the Howling Commandos. Together, they defeat Red Skull & ultimately end the war. But Captain Carter sacrifices herself to do so and is transported through time and space by the Tesseract. She ends up in the Avengers facility in 2012, face-to-face with SHIELD director Nick Fury and Agent Clint Barton (Hawkeye).     The first episode of Marvel's animated anthology series stars Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Bradley Whitford, Dominic Cooper, Stanley Tucci, Toby Jones, Neal McDonough, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Ross Marquand, Jeffrey Wright, and Josh Keaton.   East Coast Avengers Podcast  Twitter   Ep Feed  Wine, Dine, & Storytime Podcast   Twitter   Instagram   Ep Feed     For more details on the film/TV references that spill out of Kris's (and occasionally Amy's) brain, as well as links to other podcasts, visit the episode page on our website: Episode page link Email us at themarvelousmadames@gmail.com Follow us on Twitter  Instagram  Tumblr

You asked, we're doing it: A second Fleur de Louve episode WITH a guest (welcome back, Mia!) so we can spend all the time talking about this rare and beautiful love between Sarah Wilson and Bucky Barnes. There might also be a brief detour where we talk about enlisting the celebrities who follow us (yes, BOTH of them) to help us write a Broadway musical about this very thing. And maybe a threat against anyone who tries to harm Sarah in any upcoming Marvel properties. Maybe. Probably. Intro Superhero Therapy - explanation by Dr. Scarlet Background (5:16) Natalia Alianovna “Natasha” Romanova created by Stan Lee, Don Rico, and Don Heck in Tales of Suspense #52 (April 1964) Young Natalia was trained and raised by the Red Room, a secret Soviet facility training assassins - she was sent to America to assassinate Anton Vanko, who had defected from Russia, but was defeated by Iron Man - then she enlisted Hawkeye's help in fighting him, but they were defeated as well - when Clint saved her, she began falling for him, and he helped her defect - she later joined the Avengers Began working for SHIELD, and then started a relationship with Daredevil while he was stationed in San Francisco Encounters Yelena Belova, another graduate of the Red Room, who wants to take Natasha out so she can inherit the Black Widow mantle - uses psychological manipulation to force Yelena to confront her own past Has a relationship with Bucky Barnes for a time, while he's working as the Winter Soldier Serves on the Secret Avengers under Captain America Killed during the Incursion event merging the mainstream and Ultimate Marvel universes, but resurrected after Molecule Man restores the damage done - only to be killed again, this time by Hydra-influenced Steve Rogers After her death, the Red Room cloned her, including her memories, and tasked her with taking out Hydra and SHIELD - the clone, calling herself Natasha Romanoff, instead eliminated the Red Room leadership and freed all the recruits Issues (7:49) Manipulation by the Red Room, and its repeated attempts to bring her back under their control, mean she's never free from her past Also constantly trying to redeem herself for her assassinations (16:05) Life of a spy/secret agent means her identity is always in flux (22:53) Break (34:06) Plugs for BetterHelp, Sips Suds & Smokes, and Cullen Bunn Treatment (36:10) In-universe - Use Dr. Issues as a target, force her to face inequity Out of universe - Empty chair exercise to discuss feelings with people that have been wronged (39:02) Skit (46:21) DOC: Hello Natasha, I'm Dr. Issues.  NATASHA: Good afternoon, Doctor. D: I'm afraid we're going to have to go through a bit of an introductory period. Normally I get a file on my patients before I meet with them, but yours was almost entirely redacted. N: That's just how it is in my line of work. D: That's fair, but I've worked with your colleagues before, and I've never seen anything quite like this. It's like the whole thing was covered in black Sharpie. N: Some of my employers would kill both of us if they even knew I was speaking with you. Frankly this conversation is more dangerous than most. D: In that case I appreciate you speaking with me. And be sure to know I take all the necessary precautions for my own safety, as well as the confidentiality of my clients. N: No offense, doc, but that won't stop some of the more… unsavory characters I've dealt with. They've come at me in Avengers Mansion, I don't think this office will hold them. D: Sad to say, but I've dealt with worse. So we'll deal with that threat if and when it comes. Let's get back to you. What can we accomplish today? N: Probably less than what I would want out of this. D: How so? N: This is going to be the type of scenario where I don't say names, I only give hints. If you are sharp enough to follow my lead, then maybe I can learn something from you.  D: Way more nebulous than I imagined. Usually when people do that, I think they're demonstrating paranoia.  N: Is it really paranoia when you know people are truly after you? D: But the fight, flight, or freeze phenomenon doesn't turn itself on and off like a switch if you've exhausted yourself in that vigilant state for too long. Plus, it makes it difficult for anyone to get to know you. N: Thank you for stating the obvious. No, really, thank you. People don't understand that it's inherent in what I do. I didn't sign up for this life. I was bred for it. D: Maybe that's true, but N: *interrupting, clearly upset* No maybes about it! I can't say that much about such things but...think about how organized different agencies can be, especially under authoritarian rule. D: Got it. Sorry to cast any doubt to your experience. I'm thankful that you're keeping the conversation on track. Is it fair to ask, then, how being so harshly molded at a young age influences you now? Any nightmares or flashbacks to those events? N: I've learned to regulate my physiology just fine.  D: How about the emotional content, then?  N: I have all of the...expected emotions. D: Interesting choice of words. I'm not familiar with what would be considered “expected” because that's such a wide range. Anger? Sadness? Fear? N: *pause* All of it. D: Then you have lots of possibilities to work with N: More than that though. Relief, Joy, Pain...I know you're really a doctor because you just went for what's considered negative. But I'm a lot stronger than you realize. I don't want a pity case here. In a way, you're only alive right now because I made that decision when I stepped into this office. D: *obtuse, missing the mark* Is that a veiled threat at me in some way to show superiority? I don't have a god complex. N: No, I meant it much simpler than that.  D: Hmmmm...You're so resolute about this, once again I have to take you at face value. And yet, that brings us back to the original point. How can I help you if the only thing on your mind is helping others besides yourself? N: I don't get such luxury. You seem to have this mindset that I'm intentionally draining my life away, toiling at the behest of others and neglecting my needs. That's nonsense. I'm alive because I see all of the angles. Too many times it's “kill or be killed.” But what about when you save someone? Save hundreds? How many times can I give an eye for an eye before we're all blind? D: That's noble beyond compare. I hear the pain that comes through too. Same with exhaustion. I'm not asking you to change everything. I'm asking if you want some part...ANY part, better. N: *sarcastic* So you want me to be a better killing machine? D: ...anything, but that. N: So you see my problem. Even when I'm supposedly doing good in the world, it's typically because someone doing worse has been brought down.  D: Least Common Denominator. So how do we change the math? You know I won't help you with the one part of that equation you mentioned, so… N: You're not making the ultimate sinner into a saint...and I'm not even religious. D: For one thing, I'd hardly consider you the ultimate sinner. For another, we're not even going to get into that side of things.  N: That makes one of us. D: You...you really would go that far, huh?  N: When you've seen what I've seen and done what I've done, there's not even a question about it.  D: Then no shame, no blame. There's only the way up. The next assignment. Clue me in your emotions, and I'll try to establish the right path to maximizing your efficacy in relating to people in a mutually beneficial way. N: Now you're trying to make it sound like I'm a wallflower who's never dated. Come on! D: That's not what I'm getting at, I mean *bullets hit glass* N: Bozhe moi. Get down! D: Yes ma'am. N: *fires back* Who knew I was coming? D: No one outside of my assistant. N: That's one person too many. *pause* Did you see where the shot came from? D: No, I'm kinda too busy doing my job. I thought you saw all the angles. N: This is why I didn't wanna come here in the first place. OK, you stick your head up and see if you spot any movement. D: HELL NO. I'm not getting sniped so you can save the day again. N: *grunts* Fine. Do you have something you can use as a distraction? D: I have a paperweight on my desk. N: Gotta work with what we've got. On the count of three, toss it to me. One… two… three! D: *grunts* *bullets fire* N: Do svidaniya, asshole. D: I.. I can't believe this. N: Really? You do what you do and you're surprised? D: No, I can't believe something like this happened and I don't have a pun prepared. N: You are a strange man.  D: Thanks. N: And yet, not the worst at your job. Perhaps I'll come back for another session. But if I do that, we're talking directly or not at all. Also, I'd check your assistant's background. D: Consider it done. So, do you want to keep the paperweight? Consider it a memento. N: No thanks. I have enough stuff weighing me down, I don't need something else. D: Oh man, ANOTHER pun. You're good at this. #10176 Weird Questions - Jimmy Akin

Catholic Answers Live

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 5, 2021

Questions Covered: 02:05 – Suppose there is a person that, while they are asleep and dreaming, has the capacity to recognize that they are having a dream and to guide their actions within the dream. How would sinful actions in their dreams affect their regular life? For example, if this person is married and one night has a dream with a celebrity in it that they find attractive, would it be sinful to act on their feelings within the dream? If it’s not inherently sinful, would it maybe just be a bad idea because it might open the door to similar behaviors in their regular life?   06:27 – I saw this morning in a discussion with Father Mark Goring about aliens. My question is this: If there are aliens out there, and they’re just God’s creatures like us and the angels, as Jimmy Akin said, they’d also worship the one true God, the Trinity, just as we do, right? But the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity would have what for them would be an alien body, the God-man, Jesus Christ. I mean, how would they deal with a God who looked like us, and not like them. Wouldn’t that be kind of weird for them?  11:54 – If all matter were smaller and hotter prior to the Big Bang, then could it have contained life forms at those temperatures, or was life introduced after matter cooled enough to support life as we know it? 14:59 – If all matter comes from the Big Bang, I assume that matter was sent in all directions. So, are stars and matter that exploded towards the opposite direction from us visible to us, and appearing as moving away from us faster than matter moving in the same direction as we are? 17:55 – If Jesus sits at the right hand of God, who sits on the left?  19:30 – I was wondering if it would be the sin of presumption to attempt to travel into the future, since we don’t know when Christ is returning and can’t no that a particular future time will exist?  23:05 – Given that Mary is the Ark of the New Covenant, would God have placed a punishment upon touching her as his did with the Ark of the Old Covenant, a la Uzzah?  28:25 – My girls have a question for Jimmy. They want to know if Bucky Barnes, from Marvel, would be morally responsible for the violence and mayhem he caused while under a trance. Specifically, would he need to go to confession? Would he go to hell for the crimes he committed while under a trance.   31:55 – After my 6-year-old was born with Down Syndrome, I wondered if he would have Down Syndrome in Heaven or in his resurrected body. At first, I thought not since it’s caused by an extra chromosome in the body, which is not part of the soul, but I’ve recently come to understand that the church says, our bodies are a fundamental part of our eternal existence. And certainly, our intellectual capability affects our desire and ability to seek God. Will people with intellectual or physical disabilities have the same or similar disabilities in Heaven or after the resurrection of the dead? And would his intellectual disability necessarily get him a get out of hell free card?  41:30 – If I happened to have a time machine and went back to the sixteenth century, would I be morally justified in kidnapping Martin Luther and bringing him back to my own time in order to stop the Reformation?  46:50 – Could the St. Gertrude Purgatory prayer be proof of intelligent life elsewhere? Follow my logic. The prayer is traditionally said to release 1000 souls from purgatory. There are around 1.2 billion Catholics on Earth. Let’s say 50% practice. That’s 600 million. Of those, let’s say 10% know about this prayer. That’s 60 million. Let’s say 10% of those actually say it on a regular basis. That’s 6 million. Well, 6,000,000 x 1,000 souls is 6 billion souls. It’s estimated that around 108 billion people have ever lived on Earth. So today’s 6 million people regularly saying this …

Truly Inconsequential - Not all characters are created equal. Mr. Greer and Brimstone of The Grindhouse Radio debate this week's zeroes in front of a live audience. It'll be determined in real time who will remain inconsequential, and who may be liberated back into the hero's category. This week, they argue the lone wolf, Daryl Dixon from The Walking Dead; as well as Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier from Captain America and The Avengers (as well as The Falcon and Winter Soldier). How many wolves does it take to bring a super soldier down; we'll find out in the zombie apocalypse. Question is, who will remain truly inconsequential.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier was the second MCU show to hit Disney+. The show, presented as an action-adventure thriller, discussed serious subjects like race and classism. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier wrapped up season one in April, but it laid the groundwork for future MCU properties. In this episode, we were joined by K-Mitch, a good friend to the podcast and the first guest we had on the show. Similar to our Star Wars episode with K-Mitch, this episode focused heavily on race, particularly the comparison of Sam Wilson and Isiah Bradley -- two black men that took up the mantle of Captain America. Another subject we tackled was the development of characters like Sharon Carter, Baron Zemo, and most importantly, Bucky Barnes. Also, we got into some of our highlights of the show. John Walker aka USAgent actor Wyatt Russell might've stolen the show along with a surprise appearance from the Dora Milaje. A subject we touched on briefly was the scrapped pandemic storyline. Due to the real-world COVID-19 pandemic, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier went through a couple of rewrites. These changes affected the show's villains, Karli Morgenthau & the Flagsmashers. Did you agree with the Flagsmashers? Where do you rank The Falcon and The Winter Solider out of all the Marvel shows? Are you excited to see Sam Wilson in the upcoming Captain America movie? Paul, Arlo, and returning guest Michael Holland aren’t in Westview anymore. For its second TV series, the Marvel Cinematic Universe returns to more conventional superheroics. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the Captain America sequel we’ve been waiting for, filled with stellar action sequences, resonant character work, and a twisty-turny plot. The gang debates how well that last element works, but one thing they can all agree on: director Kari Skogland and head writer Malcolm Spellman do their cast justice, bringing depths to Sam and Bucky we haven’t gotten to see on the big screen. Other topics of discussion include just how relatable the Flag Smashers are, Madripoor’s splashy MCU debut, Sharon Carter’s heel turn, and how Wyatt Russell makes an insufferable character sufferable.   NEXT: he’s not exactly a falcon, but he is a weird little bird-boy. For the first Four-Color Flashback discussing manga, Paul and Arlo take a look at Inio Asano’s Goodnight Punpun: Vol. 1.     BREAKDOWN 00:00:44  -  Intro / Guest 00:05:05  -  Main Topic 02:05:00  -  Outro / Next     LINKS   Captain America’s Legacy Isn’t the Shield, It’s Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes by Jess Bacon, Inverse Falcon Watch: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Finale Reminds Us Why Steve Gave Sam the Shield by Rachel Leishman, The Mary Sue Marvel Has Big Plans for Julia Louis-Dreyfus by Joanna Robinson, Vanity Fair The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: Shooting a Psychological Thriller About the Legacy of the Shield by Bill Desowitz, Indiewire The Falcon And The Winter Soldier's Most Challenging Scenes To Film, According To The Cinematographer by Erik Swann, Cinemablend Carl Lumbly Defines What Makes a Good Captain America by Anthony Breznican, Vanity Fair The Falcon and The Winter Soldier: Emily VanCamp and Erin Kellyman on Sharon Carter’s Role as the Power Broker by Christine Dinh, Marvel.com Falcon and Winter Soldier: Baron Zemo Fixes Marvel’s Most Notorious Problem by Eric Francisco, Inverse     MUSIC “Trouble Man” by Marvin Gaye, Trouble Man (Soundtrack) (1972) “Fly Like an Eagle” by Steve Miller Band, Fly Like an Eagle (1976)     GOBBLEDYCARES Support AAPI communities and those affected by anti-Asian violence: https://www.gofundme.com/c/act/stop-aapi-hate Support the AAPI Civic Engagement Fund: https://aapifund.org/ Support Black Lives Matter and find anti-racism resources: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/ Advocate for writers who might be owed money due to discontinuance of royalties: https://www.writersmustbepaid.org/  Help teachers and classrooms in need: https://www.donorschoose.org/ Do your part to remove the burden of medical debt for individuals, families, and veterans: https://ripmedicaldebt.org/ Register to vote: https://vote.gov/

Excelsior! Just as we did with WandaVision, we've gathered the Empire Podteam — Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, Amon Warmann and Ben Travis — to talk about their favourite moments from the most recent Disney+ MCU show, The Falcon And The Winter Soldier. It's all here: talk of that bloody ending to episode four, the heartwrenching conversation at the, erm, heart of episode 5, and that bit in episode 2 with the marching band. But that's not all. As well as four giggling idiots, the show's head writer and executive producer, Malcolm Spellman, also weighs in, talking to Chris about some of the key decisions that helped shape the further adventures of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes. One quick thing: while this isn't a spoiler special (hence its presence here in our regular feed), we thoroughly recommend that you watch all six episodes of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier before listening, or else it won't make a lick of sense. And will spoil the show for you. And with that... enjoy. @ChrisHewitt @HelenLOHara @BenSTravis @AmonWarmann

Guess what! It’s the season finale and we are incredibly grateful you let us in your ears for all this time. But like Pringles, we couldn’t stop at just one so the friend goals that is AJ and Dalin... will return for season two! [movie trailer voice] “And this time, it’s personal.” We’ll be back with more Blackness, more therapy, more history, more laughs, more flats vs drums and did we mention more Blackness? Whew! Ok, all that said, how about one more ride to wrap the season properly? In this episode, AJ and Dalin dig into Marvel making Blackness more canon with series like The Falcon and Winter Soldier. They’ll make some very real life ties to our healthcare system and it’s experimental history with Black people, which leads to the question: to vax or not to vax? We had a blast with you this season and can’t wait to do it again. Be sure to keep it locked on our Twitter/FB/IG @BattleFatiguePC for more news and shenanigans. See you there! May is Mental Health Month in the US. This month is a chance for us to continue combating the stigma that keeps far too many silent. It’s a chance for us to tell and to highlight stories of lesser-known challenges. It’s a chance to declare a few statements we believe to be Black and White.   In the second episode of the Black & White Miniseries, host Chad Moses and TWLOHA Editor Becky Ebert explore the statement: “I am not broken. Who I am is whole.” Together, they talk about what it means to practice grace and acceptance when it comes to our present moment and self, and how we can be both hurting and healing.    Becky Ebert has been working as TWLOHA’s Editor for nearly half a decade, which means she’s the energy behind the organization’s blog and podcast. When she isn’t at her computer, you can find her behind the steering wheel of a car en route to a new place to explore, rewatching a Marvel movie, or outside hiking. And throughout all of those things, you’re sure to find her sidekick, a dog named Bucky Barnes, close by.  Show Notes (Links of ours and guests):   Download a transcript of this episode at twloha.com/podcast.   Follow TWLOHA on social media at:   twitter.com/TWLOHA instagram.com/twloha/ facebook.com/towriteloveonherarms/   Visit our FIND HELP page of mental health resources at twloha.com/find-help/.   Get connected for free, 24/7 to a trained crisis counselor via Crisis Text Line by texting TWLOHA to 741741.   Connect with our team by emailing podcast@twloha.com.   Learn more about the podcast and previous episodes at twloha.com/podcast.   Read the Black And White 4.0 blog at https://twloha.com/blog/black-and-white-4-0/ and shop the collection by going to https://store.twloha.com/collections/black-white.   Download The Hopeful, a free daily-use self-care app from TWLOHA, at Sign up at twloha.com/thehopeful/.   Register to move for something that matters in the 2021 virtual Run For It 5k by going to store.twloha.com/products/2021-run-for-it-5k/.     Credits:   This episode of the TWLOHA podcast was hosted by Chad Moses and produced by Rebecca Ebert.
