Google has announced new tools for parents to help manage their child's devices with Google Family Link. Family Link's new design is more intuitive for parents to use and navigate. A new Screen Time tab consolidates all screen-time management tools in a single, easily accessible place. In addition to the app and device-specific usage summary and time limits, the Screen Time tab also makes it easier for parents to set and adjust Downtime and School time. Google advised that parents will find managing their child's account, privacy settings and content filters is now easier than ever on the Controls tab. They have streamlined key controls so parents have what they need right at their fingertips, including the ability to manage account data settings, approve app downloads and block specific websites. Juggling multiple kids and their devices is also getting easier. Simply swipe between child profiles and manage devices from a single page, with more advanced settings just a tap away. The School time feature was brought to the Fitbit ACE LTE and Samsung Galaxy Watch for Kids as a way to help minimise distractions on smartwatches for children during school hours. From next week, Google will roll out School time support for Android phones and tablets as well. School time can help reduce distractions, by scheduling limited phone functionality and silenced notifications during school hours. If there is a holiday or planned day off, or even just planned lunches, parents can easily adjust the settings and set a "Break" to fit their children's schedules. Parents can choose the apps that are silenced and restricted, and learn which apps their child uses while in School time or outside of it. Google noted that there are times when certain apps are useful for studying, which is why parents can choose a set of allowed apps, and select which are allowed during School time or in other selected modes. Galaxy Watch for Kids launched with lots of new features for kids and parents. In the coming months, Google will be bringing the ability for parents to approve contacts for kids to call and text to Android phones, too. Parents can add these contacts from Family Link directly to their child's device and limit calls and texts to only those approved contacts. Children can also request to add new contacts to be approved by parents in Family Link. To learn more about how Google is helping families more safely explore online, visit families.google. There's more evidence of computer manufacturers taking the environment seriously. Acer has introduced a new Chromebook in its eco friendly Vero line. The Chromebook Vero 514 which has been designed to be repaired and recycled - much of it has been built with recycled plastic. The Vero 514 goes on sale across Europe in November although it will be a couple of hundred pounds more than some of the cheapest Chromebook but with much of it user serviceable and upgradeable - it could end up lasting a good bit longer. BeReal has now hit 10 million daily active users. The app is finding fans with people fed up with all the posing and fakery on Instagram - you just post one picture every day of exactly what you can see at a particular moment. Could this be the cure for our social media overload? And if you're looking to set up your children with their own Google account but want to control what they access and how long they spend in front of a screen - check out Google's free Family Link app - I'll do more on protecting young people online next week.

Welcome to episode 211 ("Age of CyberWar") of the EdTech Situation Room from March 3, 2021, where technology news meets educational analysis. This week Jason Neiffer (@techsavvyteach) and Wesley Fryer (@wfryer) discussed privacy issues raised by Clubhouse, Google's professed commitment to privacy, and the Duck Duck Go Privacy app. Additional discussed articles included a sobering prophesy by the FireEye CEO on future cyberwar, how the "Blacklight" tool can reveal the extent of website tracking of consumers, and (thanks to Peggy George) an article about 12 essential apps to protect your online privacy. An update on the Apple M1 SSD writing issue, an effort by Arizona legislators to change Apple's App Store payment policies, and the reopening of all 270 Apple stores in the United States were also highlighted. Chromebook and Google Family Link news and a new company promising to slash electric motor energy consumption rounded out the show. Geeks of the Week included a student eBook project from Casady School seniors (in Oklahoma City) and an iOS/MacOS remote scanning solution. Our show was live streamed and archived simultaneously on YouTube Live as well as our Facebook Live page via StreamYard.com, and compressed to a smaller video version (about 100MB) on AmazonS3 using Handbrake software. Covid-19 may have brought people’s lives to a standstill and forced them to stay at home for a more extended period, but what resulted also was that children did also get more digital exposure in their free time. Now the schools are going online; almost every child owns an electronic device for itself. Now the challenge here for parents has been to keep an eye on their kid’s online activity, and there are ways of doing so. COVID-19: Mindful parental control There are plenty of good things on the internet to access for our good. Still, when one gets access to awful stuff, it is a real challenge, especially to parents, when the users have increased for multi-folds, and the fear of kids getting exposed to unwanted things is there and harmful effects on the brain. Let’s understand how parents can have control over their kid’s activities. The parental control can be done on all devices, i.e., Android, IOS, etc. To enable it on Android devices, download Google Family Link, using which parents can track their online activity, screen time, social media activity, etc. You can also refer to this article here ( to find more information. One can also monitor their screen time if the mobile has a feature introduced by Google called Digital wellbeing. When it comes to IOS devices, Apple’s screen time feature can be used to track the screen time, things they can download, and time spent on apps & games. Parental Control Features Track Location: One of the most useful and best features is location tracking. When parental controls are put in place for kids, parents get to see the device’s location. This helps them have an eye on children’s activity and their whereabouts. This feature’s popularity is also among people who can track their elderly at home when they are out. Block Websites: Another great feature is blocking certain websites. Parents have the authority to block specific websites on their child’s mobile so that they can’t access them intentionally or unintentionally. This saves the child from seeing any harmful content online, which is not suitable for them. Monitor Phone: Parental controls help monitor the Childs activity on their device, such as the apps they use, text messages, screen time, etc. Specific devices come with the feature of putting a limit on these things. Therefore, this feature is a great one from the parents’ perspective. One can also disable specific options in an app like Facebook; a parent can make sure the child texts only to friends and not strangers. Managing Multiple Devices: Parents have the option to manage various devices with parental control features. This is helpful where kids have access to numerous devices, and there is more than one kid at home. The features mentioned above can also be activated for all the gadgets and kept track of. Use Of Inbuilt App Controls: With the worry of online over usage and the harms, it is causing people’s minds. In general, several companies have introduced digital well-being features that allow users to set a reminder on their usage and enable them to take a break. Apps like Instagram, Youtube, and TikTok have introduced this feature, which reminds users of their usage time and take a break. Parents can set time limits on their kid’s devices and have them reduce their usage. This feature is also beneficial to adults who also tend to use more of these apps. There are few cons to having parental controls for the kids, which aren’t harmful. Specific devices do not allow having control over a few apps and the activity related to them. Say, for example, if a parent wishes to Restrict the kid from following anyone on Instagram, it Is not possible owing to the company’s privacy policy, which does not allow external control. Instead, the parent can keep an eye on the activity directly on the kids’ device. Another issue that parents may face is kids are aware of the technology they use, and it won’t take much time for them to figu...

More and more, companies are finally starting to realize that parents want a way to let their children safely use digital devices. Apple and Google have been providing app ratings similar to the ESRB ratings for video games for years now but what do those ratings mean? In this episode of The Wired Homeschool, I […]
