Greg Lukianoff, president of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, joins The Winston Marshall Show for a sweeping conversation on free speech, censorship, and the dangers of state overreach.Lukianoff warns that Britain is sliding into authoritarianism with the Online Safety Act, the arrest of comedian Graham Linehan for “offensive tweets,” and thousands of citizens detained each year for speech crimes. He explains why Americans should be alarmed—not only because of cultural ties, but because UK and EU laws like the Digital Services Act now risk exporting censorship to the United States. They discuss the chilling effect of “non-crime hate incidents,” the hypocrisy of politicians who ignore Islamist extremism while cracking down on online speech, and why Big Tech is tripping over itself to appease Brussels bureaucrats. Lukianoff contrasts this with the Trump administration's free speech battles on university campuses, where anti-Semitism and harassment rationales are being used to justify speech codes. They also dive into the deeper history—Lenin, Marx, communism, and why the West never reckoned with the crimes of socialism—leaving us vulnerable to a new wave of ideological totalitarianism. All this—Britain's speech crisis, EU overreach, Trump and the universities, and the global struggle to preserve freedom of expression in the 21st century…-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------To see more exclusive content and interviews consider subscribing to my substack here: https://www.winstonmarshall.co.uk/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------FOLLOW ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Substack: https://www.winstonmarshall.co.uk/X: https://twitter.com/mrwinmarshallInsta: https://www.instagram.com/winstonmarshallLinktree: https://linktr.ee/winstonmarshall----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Chapters 00:00 - Introduction & Guest Welcome 02:49 - Graham Linehan's Arrest and Free Speech in the UK 05:08 - Arrests for Offensive Speech in the UK 07:34 - Non-Crime Hate Incidents and Social Attitudes 10:03 - Malcolm Gladwell, Trans Issues, and Chilling Effects 14:03 - The Online Safety Act and Censorship of Americans 17:04 - Why Americans Care About British Free Speech 19:14 - The EU Digital Services Act and Global Censorship 22:20 - Protecting Children Online: Policy and Parental Controls 28:41 - Free Speech in America: Trump, Wokeism, and Ideology 32:31 - Communism, Fascism, and Totalitarianism: Historical Parallels 36:30 - Reckoning with Socialism and Communism 39:30 - Karl Popper, Tolerance, and Hate Speech Laws 42:30 - Trump Administration, Campus Speech Codes, and Harassment 45:32 - Political Correctness and Speech Codes in Higher Ed 51:02 - Harvard, Civil Rights Act, and Federal Oversight 55:56 - The Right Way to Reform University Funding 58:52 - Free Speech for Pro-Palestinian Students and Deportation 1:10:19 - Why Harvard Ranks Lowest for Free Speech 1:13:21 - FIRE's New Books and Campus Free Speech Rankings 1:13:56 - Closing Remarks Hosted on Acast. OpenAI said Tuesday it plans to route sensitive conversations to reasoning models like GPT-5 and roll out parental controls within the next month — part of an ongoing response to recent safety incidents involving ChatGPT failing to detect mental distress. The new guardrails come in the aftermath of the suicide of teenager Adam Raine, who discussed self-harm and plans to end his life with ChatGPT, which even supplied him with information about specific suicide methods. Also, Instagram is testing a new Picture-in-Picture feature for watching reels, the company confirmed to TechCrunch on Tuesday. The feature allows users to watch reels in a small, floating window on their screen while browsing other apps to allow for multitasking. The feature was first spotted by app researcher Radu Oncescu. Users who are part of the test will see a pop-up notifying them about the new feature and how to turn it on. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Send us a textOkay, let's talk about the thing that is straight-up hijacking our homes right now: screens. If you've ever shouted, “Get off your phone!” at your kid while... checking your own email for the 50th time that hour? Yep, same. That's why I brought on the brilliant, passionate, and hilariously relatable Emily Cherkin, also known as The Screen Time Consultant.Emily is a former middle school teacher turned full-time tech-intentional parenting badass. She's worked with families, schools, and even policymakers and has been quoted by CHUCK NORRIS, for crying out loud. But what really hit me? She gets it. She gets the emotional labor, the mom guilt, the struggle between “don't rot your brain” and “I just need 20 minutes of quiet to make dinner.”In this episode, Emily unpacks why screen time is actually a symptom, not the root problem; why parental controls are basically the IKEA instructions of tech parenting (look good on paper, don't really work); and how to shift our whole approach without going full “live in the woods with no WiFi” extreme. Also, fair warning: You will leave this conversation questioning the idea that your kid needs a phone “just in case they get kidnapped.” (Spoiler: statistically… no.)If you've ever handed over a screen and then immediately felt like a failure, or had a deep desire to yeet your kid's iPad into a lake, this episode is your new therapy. No judgment, no shame. Just some straight-up truth bombs and actual strategies that make sense in the real world. What's Inside: Why screens aren't the real issue, and what's actually going onThe sneaky ways screen time is hijacking relationships, not just attention spansWhy fear-based parenting (hello, Stranger Danger) is totally messing with our decisionsHow to build real-life skills in your kids before handing over the techFeeling overwhelmed and wondering if it's even possible to raise decent humans in a world full of TikTok and YouTube Shorts? You are not alone. This conversation is your reminder that you don't have to go full Amish to protect your kid's brain. Let's talk about what's working (and what's making you want to scream into a pillow). DM me on Instagram @oonaghduncan and let's swap screen-time war stories. Seriously. Are screen time limits really protecting your teen—or just giving you a false sense of security? And why do so many moms say, “My kid finally came back to themselves” after time away from their phone? In this powerful conversation with Claire Morell, author of The Tech Exit, we explore the real impact of smartphones and social media on our kids and why conventional parenting tools like screen time limits and parental controls often fall short. Claire shares her journey from policymaker to parent advocate and breaks down why the tech industry's promises to families aren't adding up. Instead of surrendering to tech as inevitable, Claire offers a radically hopeful and doable alternative: the “tech exit”—a smartphone-free and social media-free childhood. Backed by research and stories from families who've successfully made this shift, she reframes tech resistance not as deprivation, but as a profound gift of presence, imagination, and resilience. Takeaways Many parents try to moderate tech with time limits and parental controls, but these tools are often ineffective and misleading. Claire explains that screens act on the brain like addictive drugs, meaning moderation isn't enough. She introduces her FEAST framework—Find families, Educate, Adopt alternatives, Set rules, Trade screens for real life—as a roadmap for reclaiming childhood from digital overwhelm. The most hopeful message? It's never too late. Even if your teen is already hooked, a 30-day digital detox can reset your child's brain, mood, and creativity. With courage, community, and practical strategies, your family can exit the tech trap—and flourish. In this episode of the Next Level Health & Fitness Podcast, Brad Jensen and cohost Craig Smith dive into Mel Robbins' popular “Let Them” theory that's been making the rounds on social media. You've probably seen it—someone disrespects you or doesn't meet your expectations and the advice is: “Let them.” But is it that simple? We unpack the potential benefits of this mindset—especially when it comes to releasing control, protecting your peace, and avoiding unnecessary emotional burnout. But we also challenge the idea and explore the dangers of oversimplifying complex relationships or bypassing healthy boundaries. This is a conversation rooted in nuance, not black-and-white thinking. We talk about how to discern when “letting them” is empowering… and when it's actually enabling. Even when it comes from someone we admire—like Mel Robbins—we believe it's worth slowing down and looking at the full picture. What you'll hear in this episode: What the “Let Them” theory really means Where this mindset can be empowering and liberating The risk of using it to avoid conflict or ignore hard conversations How to tell when to let go vs. when to lean in Why it's healthy to question even advice from people you respect If you've ever struggled with people-pleasing, setting boundaries, or navigating emotional fatigue in relationships—this one's for you.
