One week after throwing their third child a "DIY" Bar Mitzvah, Adam and Danielle reflect on the process leading up to the event, and the service/party themselves. Some questions/topics include:What's involved with becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anyway? What untraditional practices did they decide to include, and which traditions did they not follow? How do they feel their family's connection to their religion might change moving forward? How much does a Bar/Bat Mitzvah actually usually cost? What were each of their favorite parts of the event? What parts were the most stressful/overwhelming?What advice would they give other parents planning any type of big celebration for their chil(ren)? If they had to do it again, what would they do differently?Looking for the perfect buzz without the hangover? This Shabbat is the second day of Shavuot—a good time to think about our relationship to the Torah as a source of law (halakhah) that is supposed to shape how we live every day. Problem: For most of us, it doesn't. The Torah says: keep kosher. Many of us don't. The Torah says: observe Shabbat. For many of us, Saturday is not Shabbat but another weekend day, not particularly distinguishable from Sunday. The Torah (as the rabbis interpret it) says: we are obligated to pray daily. Many of us don't. Perhaps we come to shul when we have a Yahrtzeit, or when we are invited to a Bar/Bat Mitzvah or an auf ruf. But few of us actually believe we are required to pray every day. Witness that in our congregation of almost 4,000 souls, we average 20 to 40 people at our daily minyanim. The Torah we received at Sinai posits a commanding God whose commands we are obligated to observe. Few, if any of us, believe in that commanding God. There is a disconnect between the commanding God we are supposed to believe in and the autonomous lives we lead, where we do what we want to do, when we want to do it. How do we understand this disconnect? Can we solve for it, or at least ameliorate it? To consider these questions, please read the attached article by Elliot Cosgrove, the rabbi of Park Avenue Synagogue in New York, “A Choosing People,” published in Sources: A Journal of Jewish Ideas, Spring 2023. In addition, Rabbi Cosgrove was in dialogue with Yehuda Kurtzer in this recent podcast. Rabbi Cosgrove asserts: While the language of “obligation” may have run its course, “commandedness” has not. The performance of mitzvot as an expression of service to God remains a powerful driver for Jewish practice. Can we resuscitate commandedness as a relevant category in our religious lives? If not, do you have an elegant theory that explains why you do what you do as a Jew? What is your personal definition of the word mitzvah?

Rick Sammon has said that he specializes in not specializing, and I am seeing that approach to photography more often. Today's guest is Will Cadena, and his portfolio include Weddings, Bar / Bat Mitzvahs, Corporate Events, Commercial work, and Cinematography, and the entire body of work is world class. Will brings a sense of space to his images, with subjects that pop off the background. His lighting never leaves the subjects without their environment, while at the same time keeping the background in it's place. I'm browsing his site while writing this, and there is just an amazing richness to his work. Needless to say, picking an image for this show was difficult. Having started taking an interest in photography at a young age, today he is a sought after speaker. He has educated audiences at the Canon Experience Center, and the Fundy Inspiration Workshop to inspire Disney's Fine Art photographers at Disney World. He's spoken at PhotoPlus NY, and is a Speaker & International Judge at WPPI. From Imaging USA to the Vegas Symposium Will Cadena is helping to advance the creative community. His client list ranges from FJ Westcott and Think Tank Photo to Synology, Wacom, Sekonic and Celebrate. From Shinzo Abe - the Prime Minister of Japan, to Johnny Depp, Derek Jeter, Michael Bloomberg or Timothy Gunn, it seems Will can work in any situation regardless of pressure. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Outreach to Young Audiences: Bar / Bat Mitzvah Programme Proposal and Request for Comment, published by George Rosenfeld on February 20, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary EA for Jews is considering launching an EA intro programme for 11-13yo Jews, around the time of their Bar or Bat Mitzvah, the Jewish coming-of-age ceremony, when it is common to engage with charity and altruism for the first time. Section 1 of this post explains why the Bar / Bat Mitzvah process is an appealing opportunity, especially in the broader context of EA outreach to younger audiences. Section 2 outlines key elements of the proposal in more detail, including outreach to parents, in-person sessions with students, incorporation into the ceremony itself and post-programme follow-up. Section 3 highlights several challenges which we anticipate, including follow-through lag, complexity of ideas, parental resistance and safeguarding. We request thoughts and feedback (including discouragement) on any element of the proposal, especially on risks and obstacles which we may not have mentioned. We are also keen to speak to people interested in helping out or advising in any way, big or small - if this applies to you or you want to learn more, please fill in this form. Background Jewish children have a coming of age ceremony called a Bar or Bat Mitzvah (collective and gender-neutral: B'nai Mitzvah) at the age of 12 or 13. The format differs between denominations of Judaism, but it is universally considered the time when a child becomes a responsible adult within the Jewish community. It is common for children to do something for a charity around their B'nai Mitzvah period. This is partly because practising social responsibility is considered important in the context of becoming a responsible adult. In some communities, it is also because children receive many gifts, and so are encouraged to give back to those in greater need (for example, by requesting donations instead of gifts). As a result, many Jewish charities offer specific B'nai Mitzvah programmes, including ‘twinning schemes', to encourage children to support their organisation (see, e.g., Yad Vashem and World Jewish Relief). EA outreach has traditionally focused on university students, but there has been growing interest in targeting younger audiences, such as high school students (see posts here, here, here and here). Younger audiences may be especially promising for several reasons (taken from this post): They are less likely to have fixed opinions about the best way to do good than people who have been taking altruistic actions for some years. They may be more open to new ideas than older people in general. On past experience, they may also be more open to specific elements of EA thought, such as the possibility of extinction, awareness of privilege, and willingness to engage with controversial ideas in general. They are in a better position to make impactful life decisions than university students or adults, as they haven't sunk time and resources into a potentially lower impact path. B'nai Mitzvah children are a younger demographic than EA has previously targeted, so a successful programme could have broader implications for outreach (though high-quality evidence may be slow). There are also challenges associated with younger age groups, which we explore below. EA for Jews proposes to develop a programme for B'nai Mitzvah-age Jews which introduces them to key EA concepts, encourages them to select a high-impact charity for their B'nai Mitzvah fundraising and provides routes for continued engagement. We expect the majority of impact to come through the future engagement of programme participants (e.g. career, donation and student volunteering decisions), with some potential impact coming from direct fundraising around the ceremon...
Anthony Bollotta and Alex Apostolidis you Bollotta-FIDE hosts start this episode talking about following the rules, following the company culture, getting perms and 90 year old parents in their loose chat. They are joined today by Benjamin “Benji” Asher owner of the aptly named, Benjamin Asher Productions. Benji as many know him is one of the premier Bar/Bat Mitzvah DJ/Entertainer in the industry and they get into the full business of entertaining family friendly audiences. We get his take on the social side of special events…parties in the afternoon? Benji is a “Glass Half Full” kind of guy and we hear about how success sometimes blooms from being an empathetic person. People hire DJ's for weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, birthday parties, corporate events, middle school mixers, and about a million other functions. Why not funerals? Seriously, why not hire a DJ for your funeral? Also, have you told people where you want your ashes spread? None of us have any plans yet so why don't you decide where we should spread ours. *Words around the campfire is that A Rod is just bummed he can't be friends with J-Lo. Stop trying to be friends with your exes!! *Lazlo gives Slimfast some free advice about one of life's many unwritten rules. What do you do when someone asks you for someone else's phone number? *Doomscrolling! Biden and Putin agree on something, most republicans would like to forget about Jan 6th, Slimfast listens to musicals, Goodwill doesn't want your trash, fans are worried about Matthew Perry's "slurred speech". *At some point, most people will toy with being sophisticated. When did you start and what did you do? *How long were you married before you knew it wasn't gonna work? If you knew it wasn't gonna work before you got married but the wedding was already planned, should you have canceled the wedding or just given it the old college try? *Our bosses have yelled at us a million times for saying million different things, over the years. Sometimes it's nice to sit back and watch it happen to someone else. *Julia got in trouble at work a long time ago but she bleeped Slimfast talking about it on the air. *Slimfast gives an update on our Instagram friend who just called off his engagement. He's worried he made the wrong decision and he's stressed about his job. We can't fix his love life but we can toss him some career ideas. *Have a great day! Swing by tomorrow and hang out again. How are the SMBs who work with special events positioned for 2021?My special guest would agree, it's time to celebrate life's moments again, without sacrificing safety for style or inclusion for elegance. If that means thinking outside the box, as it relates to the traditional wedding, sweet sixteen, or Bar/Bat Mitzvah reception, so be it...the parties must go on!We are joined by Morgan Reed, Creative Director at Total Entertainment. Morgan and his team know that there is only one chance to get it right, and we are going to talk about he and his colleagues are making that happen in 2021.Tune in for this pragmatic conversation at TalkRadio.nyc or watch the Facebook Livestream by clicking here.Show NotesSegment 1Today's guest is Morgan Reed, Total Entertainment's Creative Director. Morgan got into the entertainment business at fourteen years old as a lighting assistant to a photographer and later became a bar mitzvah dancer. Shortly after 9/11 he decided that life is short and he had to really focus on this career path. Morgan takes great pride in the way that Total Entertainment is able utilize their creativity and tailor their services to the needs of each client. Steven talks about his experience with event planning and becoming ordained to officiate a wedding.Segment 2Before the pandemic, Total Entertainment does nearly 2,500 events a year. The process begins with the sales team which is run by the founder of the company, Mark Jason. Morgan believes that what separates them from other companies is that they are always updating their sales tools. Make created Event Chit Chat, an online database that they use to talk with their clients and discuss trends. In order to adjust to the pandemic, they began to host online events like game shows and it eventually evolved into full blown virtual productions like galas.Segment 3Steven asks about some of the wild things that happened in his industry due to the pandemic. Morgan Talks about the craziness of what he calls the “goal line stance,” where people were planning parties within ten days of the event date. Normally Total Entertainment will plan events two years in advance so they were scrambling to complete plans. In addition to events, they began hosting on site testing locations. With access to tests they have been able to test staff before events.Segment 4Morgan shares how he makes each event special for his clients. Most are happy to celebrate life after such a dark year. To Morgan this past year has been both a blessing and a curse. While he gained so much from being home with his family, Morgan is ready to get back to work. Steven reads Morgan's answers to the big three questions and they share a laugh over their favorite movies and characters. Featuring: Todd Shotz“You may not remember necessarily every single thing that they (your educators) taught you but you remember how you felt in the learning process and that has stayed with you,” explains Todd Shotz. He says that our (Hebrew Helpers') process helps to create “the feeling, that connection, that engagement which comes from showing the relevance of what our tradition has to hold for modern life.” Since 2005, Hebrew Helpers, a nationwide Jewish Studies program, has been providing personalized education to families from all aspects of the Jewish community. They work with any family looking for outside-the-box Jewish education and anyone looking for a deeper connection and comprehension of Judaism. These families may be interfaith families, LGBTQ+ families, and may or may not belong to a synagogue. Todd and his team of mentors have been working toward helping their students navigate their own Jewish identity through understanding Jewish history, culture, ritual, text and prayer. Hebrew Helpers maintains that the traditional right of passage of a Bar/Bat Mitzvah service can be a modern milestone when families and students access their spiritual place in the community. Hebrew Helpers inclusive approach helps students and families to create meaningful and experiential learning experiences. Their mission is to provide young people with the tools to navigate their Jewish identity through a custom-tailored understanding of Jewish history, culture, ritual, and prayers. Congregation Shema Yisrael is getting ready to host our very first Messianic Youth Summit and today I interviewed our keynote speaker for the event, Rabbi Eduardo Arroyo!Rabbi Eduardo Arroyo was born in 1984 in Brooklyn NY to anusim parents and was raised in a nominally Catholic home. Growing up during the golden age of Hip Hop, in the home of Hip Hop Rabbi Eduardo fell in love with music. His first personal encounter with Yeshua was at Christ Tabernacle in Queens NY, during a Wednesday night youth meeting at the age of 16. He returned to Judaism in 2004 at the age of 19 after a meeting with Messianic Rabbi David Rosenberg on Nyack College campus. A couple of years after that Rabbi Eduardo moved to Pennsylvania where he picked up a set of turntables to pursue the craft of DJ’ing. He has since been a professional DJ for 15 years. While living in Pennsylvania he met Messianic Rabbi Mark Shulman at Beit Simcha in Allentown Pennsylvania. Rabbi Shulman became a spiritual father to Rabbi Eduardo. In 2014 he married the love of his life Rebbitzin Amy Arroyo. They have been together for almost 10 years and married for 5. Together they have a beautiful 1 year old baby boy named Aiden. In 2018 Rabbi Eduardo was licensed as a Messianic Chaplain, and then in 2019 he received smicha (ordination) as a Messianic Rabbi by Rabbi Mark Shulman, Zaken Dan Sicher and Zaken Leon Benner. Glad I’m not a regular at these events...yet.
Being Jewish not only includes many rituals and rules of conduct but can also be very expensive. Being a member of a Jewish community usually includes expensive dues while the costs of Jewish education can be prohibitive. Even following specific rituals like eating Kosher meat, purchasing Shemura Matzah for Passover, making a Bris or Bar/Bat Mitzvah can be very expensive. When is money so central in Judaism? Should we really be charging for Jewish services and membership? Is there a way to take (at least some) of the expense out of Judaism? A fascinating discussion about the role of money in Judaism.

Here's my thing: Darren Till walked out to the Octagon in his hometown of Liverpool to Neil Diamond's, "Sweet Caroline" and it almost immediately became one of my favorite walkouts of all time. I originally thought that "Sweet Caroline" was only for bars, weddings, karaoke, and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, but after Sunday at 1:00 pm I realized that there is much more to it.
Bit of a touchy subject this week as I watch Muslim porn with hip-hop and electro-pop producer/engineer Najeeb Jones aka Godchild. We're just a Jew and a Muslim talking about porn in religious harmony. We compare Judaism to Islam, where I learn a little bit about Islamic cuisine and Najeeb learns the secret behind Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. Najeeb's family is from Kuwait, so after the porn, we talk about what that's like, how it is for women there, as well as fun things to do. Would the country next to Iraq make a good vacation spot? Listen and find out. Also, I share some more embarrassing stories, then during the lightning round, Najeeb and I bond over having both seen the same first porn, and finally delve into some brief talk about bestiality. At first I thought that maybe my brother had dropped something, but I knew in myself that bang was too loud to be a bottle of soap.I walked up the stairs calling his name, and I could hear this weird kind of noise that made me start to worry. I ran upstairs and opened the bathroom door to my brother on the floor having a seizure. He had also hit his head which was bleeding.I have never, in my life, been as scared as I was at that moment. I ran downstairs in a fit of hysterics and called an ambulance, who arrived promptly and helped my brother. However, this was not the moment that made me realise I was not a kid anymore. I had been crying hysterically and had called my dad begging him in a fit of sobs to come home because I was scared and didn't know what to do.What made me realise I wasn't a kid anymore was the second time he had a seizure.I had grown from the first experience. We were on holiday in France when my brother again had another seizure. This time I was so prepared. I remembered the things the doctors had told me and my parents about what to do if my brother had another fit. I was with him the whole time and unlike the first occasion, I managed to maintain my composure. I didn't cry. I didn't scream or beg someone else to help my brother. I was the one that stayed with him as he slowly came around, while my parents tried to call an ambulance when the phone operators didn't speak English.Feeling that responsibility, and the fact that I was the one who stepped up to help my brother, made me realise that I was a grown up.

The homily was delivered on Sunday, April 21, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION It is considered by many to be one of the best Sundays of the year. Our Coming of Age service includes powerful, personal expressions of the beliefs of our ninth graders. It takes a lot of thought, courage, and self-confidence for these teens to share their core beliefs with the rest of the congregation. You may recall that at All Souls, during an infant or child dedication service, the minister welcomes infants and children into the fellowship of all good souls and dedicates them into the service of righteousness and love. The parents pledge that when their child reaches the age of discretion, they will fulfill their obligation as parents to impart to their child the meaning and importance of the hour. The congregation then stands and pledges their support to nurture, care for, and help raise the child. At the end of the ceremony the minister hands each infant or child a flower. In the Spring of each year we give a flower to each youth who has completed our ninth grade Coming of Age class, and invite them before the congregation to recognize they have now reached the age of discretion. In our tradition, this service can be compared to a Bar/Bat Mitzvah in the Jewish community or Confirmation for Christians. It means a great deal to the youth, to their parents, and to the life of our church community that we share this service to honor and welcome the next generation. It is these ceremonies and rites of passage that help us connect with one another across the generations, and with the heritage of all souls across the expanse of time.
