Martin Rosenbaum was the leading specialist in utilising Freedom of Information at the BBC. As the former executive producer of political programmes at Westminster, he oversaw programmes such as 'Political Thinking' with Nick Robinson, and the 'Week in Westminster' as well as editing and producing numerous political documentaries. He had a ringside seat at the BBC during the Hutton Inquiry, the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Dr David Kelly the government advisor who became embroiled in the controversy regarding the government's claim about Iraq's possession of weapons of mass destruction in the lead-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. It was one of the most damaging controversies in the BBC's history which led to the resignation of both the director general Greg Dyke and the chair Gavyn Davies. We discuss whether FOI changed journalism and politics and the lessons learnt from the Hutton Inquiry."We were trapped in a kind of groupthink, of feeling, 'We must really stand up to them. We've got to demonstrate our independence.' They didn't have the voices saying, 'Hang on a minute, is this intelligence really right?' We didn't have the voices saying, 'Hang on a minute, are you absolutely sure that every detail in this story is correct?'"Support the podcast by signing up here Find all our podcasts here Find Martin Rosenbaum's ‘Freedom of Information: A practical guidebook' here @BeebRoger@RogerBolton@mastodonapp.ukemail: roger@rogerboltonsbeebwatch.com  Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Do Less, Be More – Exploring Franklin Method and Alexander Technique   – The MOVEMENT Movement with Steven Sashen Episode 126 with Greg Dyke   Greg Dyke is a software engineer, a former researcher in the learning sciences, and occasional partner dance teacher. He gave up downhill ski racing after leaving university and has not been running or gone to the gym since. He somehow found his way into partner dancing (Blues, Lindy Hop, Tango, Bal folk) and settled down into a sedentary lifestyle with occasional movement to music. Encounters with great teachers, Franklin Method and Alexander Technique transformed him from an ungraceful, nerdy dancer into someone who wears barefoot shoes, geeks out about somatic modalities, and is about to start training in Alexander Technique. Ten years later, he's still nerdy, but more graceful - and people seem to really enjoy dancing with him.   Listen to this episode of The MOVEMENT Movement with Greg Dyke about the Franklin Method and the Alexander Technique.   Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week's show: - Why people should find the movements that their body knows how to do. - How the images you hold about your body are going to mirror what you do with your body. - How turning your head from side to side shortens your spine and creates tension. - Why people must expand their movement vocabulary by bringing awareness to their movements. - How people should find a way to use less effort and relax more. About this episode: Greg Dyke's resume reads like a collage of seemingly unrelated twists and turns -- engineer, pastor, nurse, yak rancher -- but that's only if you're reading it superficially. Spend even a few minutes with Dr. Reverend Dyke and you learn each twist was related to the one that came before, and each turn marked by a deep and abiding relationship with social justice, downward mobility and doing the right thing. About our guest: Greg Dyke, owner of Zhi-ba Shin-ga Yak Ranch in Wellington, KY has always been a man on a mission. His unusually varied professional life has taken him from engineering to ministry, from upstate New York to inner city New Orleans. But regardless of the terrain, Greg has remained true to the inner compass that always seems to be urging him on to help make things better for others. Greg Dyke’s hugely successful career is defined by leading some of the UK’s biggest and most influential organisations, from the BBC, ITV, London Weekend Television, The FA and Brentford, the west London club he’s supported since childhood. Sport has been a theme throughout his professional and personal life. When he was managing director of LWT in the early 1990s, Dyke arranged to meet representatives of five major English clubs to discuss a deal to award them a greater slice of media rights fees. This meeting is often cited as a catalyst for creation of the Premier League. Famously, Dyke’s ITV was outbid by Rupert Murdoch’s Sky, and years later, when Dyke was a board director of Manchester United, his was the only vote against Murdoch’s proposed takeover of the club. He became Director General of the BBC in 2000, with a reform agenda, famously describing the organisation as ‘hideously white’. In 2013, Dyke replaced David Bernstein as chairman of The FA, leaving in 2016, choosing not to seek re-election. We’re grateful to Nic Coward for putting us in touch. Greg Dyke, in conversation with Adam Kirtley, gives frank insights into what it means to be a leader and what is key. Greg explains how important the way people are managed is to the success of the business and wonders why this doesn’t always happen. He goes on to explain the qualities of a good leader and how to assess success, using a personal, nightmarish situation to illustrate the point. Selling change is key to employee engagement with the process. Experience at the NHS had an impact on how he achieved change at the BBC. Greg explains the cost- effective strategies he used to improve relationships, enabling him to get agreement on some tough decisions. Leadership training, Greg says, is a must for supporting managers in their jobs. He then tells us how he used ‘public money’ to build a more caring culture and describes the cost benefits of doing so, despite repeated media criticism. At LWT, big, unpleasant changes needed to be made to the company. This was done using a sensible long-term view and treating people properly. Greg tells Adam how he views the differing roles of line managers and HR managers and explains why HR was centralised at the BBC. We hear that encouraging a culture where risk and innovation are important and that getting information to everyone, especially in a big organisation like the BBC, is crucial. Adam asks Greg about his failures. Not following ‘rules’ has had mixed results in his career at the top. He also concedes that impatience is, to some extent, a weakness. Finally, hear Greg’s two top tips that listeners should follow to win at leadership.

This week Dame Elizabeth Filkin's been telling the Leveson Inquiry about claims of improper relations between police and the press, including suggestions that some senior officers exchanged information to keep their private lives out of the papers. What impact could her recent report on police/press relations have on this and, based on what we've heard from the Inquiry this week, does she see senior officers as a greater problem than the junior ones? Lord Birt was BBC Director General from 1992 to 2000. As the search continues for a successor to the current DG, Mark Thompson, what qualities does he think the candidates need and what are the main problems that she or he will face? You can hear Greg Dyke's thoughts on this on The Media Show on 1st February. And, following this programme's coverage of the debate about women on TV, what are the prospects for the latest campaign? Steve Hewlett presents a topical programme about the fast-changing media world. As former presenter Miriam O'Reilly celebrates winning an ageism case against the BBC, we ask whether this ruling will impact on who programme executives choose to be their on-air talent. A recent EastEnders storyline on sudden infant death syndrome has prompted a record number of complaints leading producers to announce they will cut the story short. Former channel controller Lorraine Heggessey and scriptwriter Simon Ashford ask whether a culture where complaints have such weight will lead to less creative drama. Why has Northern and Shell, which includes Express Newspapers, withdrawn from the Press Complaints Commission? What are the implications for press regulation in the UK?The Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt is due to outline his plans for local television next week. It follows a report by Nicholas Shott in December, which suggested a network of around 10 local TV stations. But former Director General of the BBC and Chair of the Local Television Advisory Committee, Greg Dyke says the report is too cautious. He suggests that local TV could be commercially viable in at least 60 areas of the UK. We talk to him about how this more extensive network might operate, and how much it's likely to cost. The producer is Kathryn Takatsuki.

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is Greg Dyke. A top flight TV executive known for being instinctual and populist, his appointment as BBC Director-General was an uncharacteristically bold move for the corporation and an extraordinary moment for a youngster once marked out by his teachers as 'the boy least likely to succeed'. A natural businessman who relishes taking risks, his greatest successes have come from his ability to spot the moment and act quickly. He saved TV-am with Roland Rat, moved the BBC's Nine O'Clock News at a fortnight's notice and thwarted Rupert Murdoch's digital hopes by backing Freeview. But his critics say that it is his passion and instinct that ultimately led to his downfall. He was forced to resign from the BBC after a bitter row that erupted between the corporation and Downing Street about its coverage of the Iraq war. His departure, which followed considerable mud-slinging, ill temper and tragedy, prompted a huge display of loyalty from his staff as thousands gathered on the steps to wish him a tearful goodbye. Since then, he's kept a low profile - but doesn't rule out a return to high office if the right job came along.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Like a Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan Book: Complete Works by Dylan Thomas Luxury: A guitar with a guide to playing it.
