'Diva' betekent 'vrouwelijke godheid'. Loren is 90 nu, Cardinale 86.

Hosszú évek óta a Párizstól 150 kilométerre található vidéki rezidenciáján, Douchyban egy kúriában élt, visszavonultan, ráadásul életének utolsó időszakát családi acsarkodások árnyékolták be. Nincs többé tisztelet, se a kimondott szónak becsülete. Trabalhou com Luchino Visconti, Michelangelo Antonioni, Louis Malle, René Clément, Jean-Pierre Melville, Jean-Luc Godard, Romy Schneider, Monica Vitti, Claudia Cardinale, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Gabin e tantos outros.

Roy Harold Scherer Jr. was born smack dab in the middle of both the Roaring 20's and the country in Illinois, Thanksgiving of 1925. Of all the gay and bisexual actors and actresses we've covered, Hudson was easily the most elusive and convincing in his career long presentation as a very straight screen idol and leading man. While known to many in Hollywood circles, his private life only came to public light over three decades into his career, when he was one of the earliest celebrities to openly discuss his being stricken with AIDS. A naval veteran and strangely enough, a lifelong Republican and de facto Goldwater Girl (!) he pursued his dream of acting despite a pronounced and career long difficulty in remembering lines, being rejected from drama school and wasting no less than 38 takes to deliver a single line in his first onscreen role – a testament to his All American good looks and winning personality, to be sure. After being signed to Universal, he was cast in several forgettable and forgotten cheesy period westerns, pirate and supposed adventure films before landing industry attention with his Oscar for the execrable James Dean/Elizabeth Taylor melodrama Giant.  But it was with his oddly fortuitous pairing with Doris Day and neurotic comic relief sideman Tony Randall in a series of fluffy and decidedly conservative romantic comedies at the end of the 1950s that he truly attained marquee leading man status. Going on to star with Italian sex symbols Gina Lollobrigida and Claudia Cardinale, as well as other attempts to replicate the Hudson/Day formula with lesser lights like Leslie Caron and Paula Prentiss, Hudson began to tire of these sort of light comedy roles, moving to television for the highly enjoyable and well remembered McMillan and Wife alongside the equally loveable Susan Saint James and gay icon (and Rosie the paper towel lady!) Nancy Walker  for a several season, nigh-decade spanning run.   His latter roles tended towards the decidedly idiosyncratic: John  Frankenheimer's existential paranoia opus Seconds, Alastair MacLean's flawed if enjoyable Cold War spy film Ice Station Zebra, Roger Vadim's sexploitation slasher/comedy Pretty Maids All In a Row, entertaining disaster epic Avalanche and the pensive meditation of a miniseries that was The Martian Chronicles. So join us as we take on the All-American leading man who hid a surprising edge behind the surface veneer, the one and only Rock Hudson, only here on Weird Scenes! Topics of discussion include whether the film is an anti-western, Leone as a mythmaker, a theory on Charles Bronson's character having been dead the whole time, a breakdown of Ennio Morricone's legendary score, and why more films need to swing for the fences.#78 on Sight & Sound's 2012 "The 100 Greatest Films of All Time" list.https://www.bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/polls/greatest-films-all-time-2012#95 on Sight & Sound's 2022 "The 100 Greatest Films of All Time" list.  https://www.bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/greatest-films-all-timeCheck us out on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sceneandheardpodCheck us out at our official website: https://www.sceneandheardpod.comJoin our weekly film club: https://www.instagram.com/arroyofilmclubJP Instagram/Twitter: jacpostajGK Instagram: gkleinschmidtPhotography: Matt AraquistainMusic: Andrew CoxSpecial Thanks: Becca DeveauxGet in touch at hello@sceneandheardpod.com

POP ART, WHERE WE FIND THE POP CULTURE IN ART AND THE ART IN POP CULTURE. GO WESTERN, YOUNG MAN: Join me and film producer Colin Vaines (Gangs of New York, Young Victoria, My Week with Marilyn, Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool) as we talk The Wild Bunch/Once Upon a Time in America. First, a mea culpa caveat. There were some technical issues, so at the end, some things were cut short, mainly in how I listed my suggested films, and then I left out what's coming up for me and the podcast. But other than that, it was a great recording venture. “When you side with a man, you stay with him!” Oh, the good old days of the west where it was easy to tell the good buys from the bad guys. The bad guys wore black hats; robbed and killed innocent people; and hated Indians; the good guys wore white hats, brought law and order to the community, and hated Indians …Sounds like it's time for Episode 89 of Pop Art, where we find the pop culture in art and the art in pop culture. It's the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. For this episode, I am happy to welcome as my guest, producer and filmmaker Colin Vaines, who has chosen as his film the existentialist revisionist western, Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch, while I have chosen the more postmodern revisionist western, Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West, both films not just about the changing West, but about the change in Westerns. And in this episode we answer such questions as: Why did the two filmmakers make so few films? What is the connection between the Mexican warlord Mapache and the Oscar statuette? Who dubbed Claudia Cardinale's voice and what is she most famous for? What movie did Lee Marvin turn down The Wild Bunch to do? Dario Argento and Bernardo Bertolucci…together? What did John Wayne say about The Wild Bunch? Why did a French movie projectionist hate Once Upon a Time…? What did Peckinpah do after Robert Ryan wouldn't stop complaining about not getting top billing? What fashion influence did Once Upon a Time… have and what did it have to do with escalators? Check out Colin's Wikipedia page at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_Vainesand his films which can be found on various platforms as well as coming to a theater near you. Ein Gespräch u.a. Democracies around the world are under threat from populist movements, demagogues, and dogmatic extremists who use disinformation, conspiracy theories, cancel culture, and shaming to weaponize social media and challenge our ability to distinguish truth from falsehood. Most recently, the Russian government has used lies and fake news to justify its attempted land grab in Ukraine. In "The Constitution of Knowledge: A Defense of Truth", best-selling author, journalist, and public intellectual, Jonathan Rauch, offers a stirring defense of the social system of checks and balances that is crucial for turning disagreement into verifiable facts."This global network of people hunting for each others' errors is far and away the greatest human technology ever invented," Jonathan tells us. The constitution of knowledge "is a global conversation of people looking for truth, and more especially, looking for error."In this episode of "How Do We Fix It?", Jonathan arms listeners and advocates of truth with a clear understanding of what they must protect, and how to do it. He makes a clear and moving argument for how all of us can help defend truth and free inquiry from threats that come from as far away as Russia and as close as our cellphones. Here's one of our recommended reviews of "The Constitution of Knowledge".Movie recommendation: Richard enjoyed "The Leopard", a 1963 Italian period drama by director Luchino Visconti, starring Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale, and Alain Delon.
