By 2003 she had transitioned to secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. In December 2007, she began the Wahls Protocol™. Within a year, she was able to walk through the hospital without a cane and even complete an 18-mile bicycle tour. We also have Julie Robinson on the show. Julie was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis last year. She started using the Wahls Protocol™ and within months saw huge changes in her symptoms.

He was 88 pounds and dealt with severe anorexia.  Plus, Ryan was suffering from hardcore mental health problems. Eventually, Ryan got his weight up to 130. Ketosis will help reset your body and give you humanity back. Infants are in ketosis, and women during pregnancy are in ketosis too.  So many people in the United States are metabolically inflexible. Every single one of these people can benefit from ketosis.  [30:10] Ryan Debunks Common Misconceptions About Keto  Too many health coaches and influencers are making ketosis complicated. Ketosis is not complex; it's simple.  One of the biggest mistakes people make is eating things that are labeled “keto.”  Nothing in the world labeled “keto” beats eating real and whole foods.  You need to focus on real food instead of packaged and processed goods. Another thing people are getting wrong is worrying about eating too much protein. It's actually pretty challenging to get into gluconeogenesis.  [35:40] Animal-Based Proteins Are Amazing for the Human Body  Pretty much everything you hear mainstream, almost the opposite is true.  Animals have the full array of amino acids that the human body needs. While on the other hand, plants do not have the full array of amino acids we need. Ryan is a massive fan of eating fatty red meat.  You need cholesterol to synthesize vitamin D. Also, don't be afraid to eat eggs; eggs are great for your hormones.  [39:30] Cholesterol Is Critical for the Body and Your Overall Health More people die from heart disease with normal to low cholesterol than with high cholesterol.  Cholesterol is essential; your membrane is made up of partly cholesterol. You Need To Have A Diverse Microbiome  The microbiome is vast; if you have a healthy microbiome, you have five to nine million genes in that microbiome. As long as you have a diverse microbiome, you can fill in the gaps and have excellent health.  Basically, we need diversity to have healthy metabolites. Healthy people have diversity in their guts.  [20:00] Look At Your Poop: That's The Best Gut Diversity Test More diversity may not necessarily be a good thing. Unfortunately, we don't understand this field well enough. You can test your microbiome every single day by pooping and looking in the toilet.  Are you pooping rocks, logs, sticky logs, snakes, pudding, or tea? Rocks are a problem, and so are sticky logs. Pudding and tea are also problems.  [25:25] The Hormetic Role That Plants Can Play In Your Lifestyle  There are more lectins in plants than there are in animal products.  Remember, plants are filled with compounds that are poisons. However, plants are incredible hormetic stress for our cellular physiology. By eating a large variety of plants, you are giving cells the signals that our ancestral mothers and fathers would have received.  Plant variation will be critical for your gut health.  [34:05] What Is The Wahls Protocol Diet?  Whatever you and your family do together, you will be much more successful.  The diet that has the most significant effect on fatigue reduction and quality of life improvement is the Wahls diet.  It would help if you ate fewer added sugars, fewer processed foods, and fewer carbs than the Standard Amerian Diet. Eat grass-fed meats, wild fish, organ meats, oysters, mussels, and clams.  Also, eat kimchi and sauerkraut regularly to have a lower rate of respiratory viral infections. Plus, it's a great source of vitamin C.  [41:05] A Clinical Trial For People With Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis If you have relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, Dr. Wahls wants you to enroll in her clinical trial. She is comparing a ketogenic diet, the modified paleo diet, the Wahls diet, and a usual diet. Plus, she will give the usual diet group tips on reducing sugar and eating more non-starchy vegetables.   They have MRIs at month zero and month twenty-four.  Plus, they will measure walking, hand function, vision function, and working memory.  [46:00] The Magic of Olive Oil: Potent Antioxidants and Polyphenols  There are many studies showing what olive oil does to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, dementia, anxiety, and depression. Olive oil does remarkable things for the risk of relapse as well.  Hydroxytyrosol is a very potent antioxidant. Take your olive oil cold because you deactivate some of those polyphenols when you heat them. Also, put your olive oil in the fridge. She kept seeing the same inflammatory-based conditions turning up. Terry Wahls inspired Pauline to look at nutrition at a much deeper level. Pauline loves to think about how nutrition can improve longevity and protect us against chronic disease. [07:20] Being More Preventative When It Comes To Covid We can improve our immune function and make it more robust and more reactive when it needs to be. At the start of the pandemic, there was a lot of skepticism around vitamin D and zinc. Plus, there was a lot of skepticism around supplements, food, and the impact of nutrition. Now, it seems to be much more readily accepted in the conventional medical community. [17:30] Dual-Fuel Burning: What It Means and How To Achieve It Ketones have been around for as long as we've been around as humans. We can burn two different types of fuel: ketones and glucose. It protects our body from essentially eating our muscles and ourselves to death if we go two or three days without food. Dual-fuel gives us the ability to go for long periods of time without food. We're carrying our own little refrigerator of food that we can access at any point. Dual-fuel keeps our mood stable. [21:00] It's Incredible That We Have A Metabolically Flexible Body Our brain is designed to be able to utilize glucose or ketones. However, the brain has a preference for ketones. If we eat some sweet potatoes, we will mop up that glucose and use it immediately. If you don't eat carbs, then you will utilize the fat stored in your body. Pauline will fast from 6 pm to lunchtime the next day. She loves to have a core level of ketones. We have a brain that's becoming increasingly insulin resistant. Millions and millions of individuals across the world are already insulin resistant. Our body will produce ghrelin, very predictably, at nine o'clock, in anticipation of us having our breakfast. Your ghrelin is trained to spike. If you want to eliminate breakfast, then you should start to shift your ghrelin. Start moving your eating times 45 minutes back. That way, you're training that ghrelin spike to ease off rather than stopping altogether slowly. It will be an easier transition.
