In today's episode we're talking all about bottles—starting from the initial drops of colostrum to finding the perfect bottle that supports your baby's oral development. I'm addressing myths around nipple confusion, the importance of pace bottle-feeding, and finding bottles that benefit both breastfed and bottle-fed babies. I'm even covering one of the biggest questions most pumping and breastfeeding moms have when it comes to bottles-how much do I prepare? You'll leave this episode feeling more informed about how you can incorporate bottles into your breastfeeding and pumping journey. I share:Advantages of initially using hand expression over pumping for colostrum + adjusting feeding tools (syringes, cups, etc) based on baby's needsAdvice on the timing for introducing bottlesRecommendations for feed volumes at different baby stages. How to determine the optimal amount per bottle feeding based on the baby's feeding frequencyThe importance of bottle selection for developmental reasonsResources mentioned:Ep 10: Nipple Confusion and Flow with Courtney OlsonEp 3: Hand Expression with Kelly KendallIG Post: Bottle preppingIG Reel: Courtney's cup feeding colostrumIG Reel: Syringe feeding colostrumFollow @bemybreastfriend on InstagramBemybreastfriend.combemybreastfriend Amazon Storebemybreastfriend YouTubeSponsor: Needed - 20% off your first month of products with code TIREDMOMSCLUB

We have Kelly Kendall back on the show today. She was our guest back on Episode 3: Hand Expression with Kelly Kendall so if you haven't listened to that episode, be sure to go back and check that out. Today we are talking about a not very complicated topic that moms seem to overcomplicate. And that is increasing milk supply.Kelly is a nurse, an IBCLC, the face behind the Instagram account @thebalancedboob, and has a feeding course called Boob School. She and I met nearly four years ago and have been friends ever since. She is a knowledge of information and understands that when it comes to increasing your supply, it's really the foundations that matter. We discuss what a normal amount of breast milk  in one session is - whether you're pumping or breastfeeding. Kelly shares tips like changing the time of day (or night rather in this situation) that you are pumping, making sure you are using the right pump for you, eating a well balanced diet, and whether or not supplemental things like cookies and teas really work to increase your supply. One thing we want you to remember is that if you are having a bad pump session or baby doesn't seem to be latching well at the moment, it's okay to end your session and come back to it when you are less stressed. Your body knows when it is under increased pressure and won't produce as much milk in those types of situations. So, like I always say, sit back, relax, and let's have a let down!Follow Kelly on Instagram: @thebalancedboobFollow Kelly on TikTok: @thebalancedboobFollow Kelly on Facebook: @thebalancedboobKelly's YouTubewww.thebalancedboob.comKelly's CoursesFollow Kaia on Instagram: @lowsupplymomFollow @bemybreastfriend on Instagrambemybreastfriend.combemybreastfriend Amazon Storebemybreastfriend YouTube

The proliferation of tools and devices designed to be used during lactation has occurred without an accompanying body of research to support it. Parents are receiving hundreds to thousands of marketing messages for these products during pregnancy and lactation, a time when they are especially vulnerable to being influenced about making buying decisions that they are told can impact their ability to breastfeed. In fact, any tool or device designed to support lactation can have a negative impact if used improperly or without indication. Much like the "cascade of interventions" terminology used to describe how labor interventions accumulate, parents can also experience a cascade of lactation interventions. Lactation support providers in every setting need to keep up with the use and indications for these products and understand how to recognize when their use is becoming problematic so that they can educate parents prenatally and provide appropriate lactation care and referrals to a higher level of clinical lactation care or medical care as needed.Evolve Lactation with Christine Staricka IBCLC is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. In this session, we'll talk about how we can help simplify lactation for so many by ensuring the basics are always in place. Thank you for listening! I appreciate your support. Here's a link to a handout that goes with this session. Madison and I talk about the unique job of being Kangaroulas, a unique birth worker that was developed by Dr. Nils Bergman and his wife Jills Bergman to focus on bonding and attachment of baby and mother. We also talk about our unique premature baby stories. Madison Hendry (aka Mama Bird), transitioned into motherhood in 2014. As a visual artist and recent graduate in 2011 with a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY, she began to see a shift in her artwork, career, and perspective on life. Her artwork has been exhibited and published internationally and included in pioneering events such as Project AfterBirth; the first-ever international exhibition based on the subject of early parenthood. With the premature birth of her second son, Madison became fascinated with the dynamics of the mother/infant relationship. She realized her touch, sound, smell, milk, and relationship with him were not only beneficial; she was essential and played an active role in his development. The process of having a premature infant taught her to listen to her instincts and her child's needs and respond to them. Madison received a scholarship and completed her Breastfeeding Educator Certification with Birth Arts International in 2018. She went on to become a Certified Birth Doula with BirthWorks Int. And Certified Kangaroula with Jill & Dr. Nils Bergman in 2020. Madison has over 9 years (and counting) of personal breastfeeding experience. She lives in a 1950s Sears Home in Cleveland, OH suburbs with her husband, tattooer, Angus Hendry, two boys, Angus and Huckleberry, daughter, Evergreen, and a baby on the way. Often when there is an extra complication like an illness, a disability, or a rare disease, human milk feeding can be made more difficult because well-meaning care providers don't always provide the latest evidence based information. When early human milk feeding gets interrupted by outdated policies, this can have long lasting implications for the parent and the baby.Today's episode focuses on Diabetes, which is one such complication that often sets off a cascade of both prenatal and postpartum interventions that lead to prolonged breastfeeding/chestfeeding difficulty. This is a unique episode as it features both evidence based information presented by host and IBCLC Lo Nigrosh and an interview with Megan of Illuminated Birth who experienced breastfeeding as a person with Type 1 Diabetes. This episode features information about: Setting yourself up for baby feeding success if you have Type 1, Type 2 or gestational diabetes Research about preventing hypoglycemia (or low blood sugar) in the baby as a person with diabetes Hand Expression during the 3rd trimester to harvest colostrum in case it is need for hypoglycemia Information about milk making specific to people with Diabetes Information about formula content versus human milk content as it relates to blood sugar regulation The difference in blood sugar management between pregnancy and postpartum when the parent is nursingTo hear Megan's full baby feeding story, find it here.To hear Francie Webb's episode on Hand Expression, find it here.To hear the episode on Medications and human milk, find it here.Find Megan to be your doula, childbirth educator or birth photographer on her website. So many people head into the prenatal period either feeling uncertain they can feed their baby from their body, or feeling like it won't be possible because they have heard so many stories that plant seeds of doubt. If you are one of those people, this story from Francie Webb of Go Milk Yourself will help you feel like feeding your baby milk that your body makes is possible, and will give you practical tools to getting there.Francie, a mom of three, went into her first birth feeling very scared about being emotionally triggered because of a traumatic experience that happened while babysitting when she was 14 years old. She had hired a doula and had forthright conversations with her care providers about her fears and how she wanted to be cared for during the prenatal period and delivery. She also was directed away from a breastfeeding course which she was told would be unhelpful and toward a prenatal education course which helped her to feel empowered about what she was capable of doing.Due to a variety of circumstances, the first few months of milk making were far from stress free. In this episode we talk to Anita Moorhead about all things antenatal hand expression. Anita is a Clinical Nurse/Midwife Consultant (for Lactation), at the Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne, a coordinator for the DAME (Diabetes and Antenatal Milk Expressing) trial and PhD candidate at the Judith Lumley Centre, La Trobe University, Australia. Anita has collaborated on breastfeeding papers and reports, hospital, and state clinical guidelines and is a frequent presenter at national and international conferences. We start our conversation with Anita about the Diabetes and Antenatal Milk Expressing trial and what was its purpose and why this was a needed study. Then we delve deeper to ask all those common and not-so-common questions around the topic of antenatal hand expression. So in this episode you'll hear us talking about- What were the feeding outcomes after women initiated antenatal hand expression in the DAME trial? Does antenatal hand expression help with future breast milk feeding?  Could antenatal hand expression cause an increase in the number of babies admitted into the special care nursery after birth? Does antenatal hand expression cause earlier birth? What were the average expressed milk volumes achieved by the women during the DAME study? And we take an important deep dive into the psychological aspects of this practice in relation to the newly published paper looking at the views and experiences of the women in the DAME trial . We spoke about what midwives and birth workers should consider in relation to how women felt about this practice and the milk volumes they were expressing. LINKS:Dr Rachel Reed - Courses- Books Anita MoorheadAdvising women with diabetes in pregnancy to express breastmilk in late pregnancy (Diabetes and Antenatal Milk Expressing [DAME]): a multicentre, unblinded, randomised controlled trial‘Is there any point in me doing this?'
