On July 22, 1997, a pioneer trek reenactment honoring early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reached This Is the Place Heritage Park. President M. Russell Ballard, now Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, was there watching as hand carts and wagons entered the valley 150 years after the first pioneers arrived. At the time, President Ballard was serving as chairman of the Church's Sesquicentennial Committee. He emphasized that the sesquicentennial was about more than wagon trains; it was an opportunity to tell the world the story of the restoration. That opportunity continues 25 years later, as the Church marks the 175th anniversary of the pioneers entering the valley. It was a journey then that required “faith in every footstep,” just as living the gospel requires “faith in every footstep” now. President Ballard joins this episode of the Church News podcast to talk about pioneering today. In 1856 thousands of people traveled over 4,600 miles from Liverpool, England to Salt Lake City, Utah. They walked the last 1,200 miles of that journey pulling their meager belongings in small handcarts. Who were these people? Why did they make the journey? What was it like and why did two of these groups require a massive rescue effort involving 250 wagons and thousands of rescuers? Labour MP and former Shadow Leader of the Commons Chris Bryant has told the Telegraph's Chris Hope that he wants to stop Brexit, even though that would be against the wishes of the voters who elected him. Speaking on Chopper's Brexit Podcast, he said, "We're going to hell in a handcart. I kind of want to stop it really. I know that's not what probably the voters in my constituency want, and I think we could only do that if we another referendum."
