Religious Freedom—A Cherished Heritage to Defend | D. Todd Christoffersonhttps://youtu.be/qDUsvRXPfds Religious freedom is crucial for our nation. By being informed, speaking up, and getting involved, we can preserve religious freedom for everyone of faith. https://speeches.byu.edu/talks/d-todd... "Religious freedom is the cornerstone of peace in a world with many competing philosophies. It gives us all space to determine for ourselves what we think and believe—to follow the truth that God speaks to our hearts. While protection from government persecution is of course crucial, that is not all that religious freedom means: A robust freedom is not merely what political philosophers have referred to as the “negative” freedom to be left alone. . . . Rather, it is a much richer “positive” freedom—the freedom to live one’s religion or belief in a legal, political, and social environment that is tolerant, respectful, and accommodating of diverse beliefs. That freedom is now under fire. Although religious freedom lies at the core of what America is and what it stands for, critics now openly ask whether religion belongs in American public life at all. Some say that faithful Americans have no business speaking of their beliefs when addressing issues of public concern, even when those issues involve unmistakably moral judgments. Others condemn churches and religious organizations for expressing moral and religious perspectives on matters of public policy—especially when those perspectives conflict with secular viewpoints. Some even claim, with no sense of history, that religious people and institutions violate the constitutional separation of church and state if they bring their beliefs into the public square. A few scholars have gone so far as to argue that religion does not deserve to be tolerated, much less receive special protection. Some advocates demean as “discrimination” the long-standing right of religious organizations and schools to have faith-based standards in employment and admissions. Others resort to politically correct name-calling rather than talking about difficult topics in a spirit of mutual respect. Hurtful labels such as “bigot” or “hater” are all too common. Religious voices are at least as deserving of being heard as any others. In fact, churches and other religious organizations bring unique experiences and perspectives to public policy debates. They recognize corrosive social forces that threaten faith, family, and freedom. They know personally about the hardships of family breakdown, unemployment, poverty, drug abuse, and numerous other social ills. Why? Because they are on the front lines helping individuals and families work through these wrenching problems. When they speak out, they do so not for selfish reasons, like the special-interest groups that constantly lobby our public officials, but out of concern for the people they minister to, their families, and society itself. They bring a moral—often cautionary—voice to matters of social and public policy that we desperately need in this age of materialism, self-promotion, and disruptive change. The perspectives of churches and religious leaders make an irreplaceable contribution to our ongoing democratic conversation about how we should live together. Their voices are essential. And so are yours. If you are a person of faith, you have a critical contribution to make to our country and society. Public discussions about the common good are enriched by men and women like you who routinely put duty above convenience and conscience above personal advantage. Don’t be intimidated by those who claim that you are imposing your religious beliefs on others. In a pluralistic society, promoting one’s values for the good of society is not imposing them on others—it is putting them forward for consideration along with all others. Societies will choose and decide. Someone’s values will prevail in the end, and all of us have the right—and duty—to argue for what we believe will best serve the needs of the people and most benefit the common good. Without you, our political and social debates will lack the richness and insights needed to make wise decisions, and our nation and communities will suffer." - Elder Christofferson Elder D. Todd Christofferson was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when he gave this speech at the Provo 2016 Freedom Festival Patriotic Service on 26 June 2016. Elder D. Todd Christofferson reminded us that because Christ was resurrected, we know that what He taught is true. "Because He was resurrected, Jesus cannot have been only a carpenter, a teacher, a rabbi, or a prophet.

"This great and last dispensation is building steadily to its climax." That is what Elder D. Todd Christofferson said toward the end of his General Conference talk this last April. In this conversation, Bill Turnbull from Faith Matters sits down with Tom Christofferson and Patrick Mason to discuss the Church’s reversal of its controversial November 2015 policy regarding LGBTQ couples and their children. They discuss what we know about the origins of the policy and its reversal, as well as the implications of those actions for both gay and straight Latter-day Saints, and for our understanding of how revelation occurs on important Church matters.Tom Christofferson is a devout, gay Latter-day Saint, and brother of Elder D. Todd Christofferson. Tom is author of “That We May Be One: A Gay Mormon’s Perspective on Faith and Family” published by Deseret Book.Patrick Mason is the Howard W. Hunter Chair in Mormon Studies and Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities at Claremont Graduate University. He was recently named Leonard Arrington Chair of the Mormon Studies program at Utah State University. He’s also the author of “Planted: Belief and Belonging in an Age of Doubt,” co-published by BYU’s Maxwell Institute and Deseret Book.
***Meant to be for Friday, March 8, 2019****I've known a few people, including myself, that struggle with knowing if it's okay to compromise our standards just a little bit in order to help someone else. I mean, we're asked to be Christ-like, are we not?! In this episode, I share something from Elder D. Todd Christofferson that actually helped me see quite clearly what the best option is, and it may surprise you! Enjoy! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

You may have heard the Christian community talk about GUILT--that feeling of responsibility for doing something wrong, of never being quite good enough, whether real or imagined. Do Latter-day Saints feel it too? Oh, you bet! This week we tackle the big "G" word, talking less about doctrinal beliefs and more about perceived experience and how we have felt it deeply affect our personal lives and our friends near and far. Can Christianity as a whole be damaging? Is it the teachings, or the culture of the people, or both? This is our longest episode yet, so strap in, get comfy, and listen in with Jon and Steph as we talk all about this LIFE as Latter-day Saints. Recently, the Deseret News and Deseret Management Corporation hosted an event at the Newseum in Washington, D.C., titled, "Integrity and Trust: Lessons from Watergate and Today." Some questioned us for convening a conversation on the principles of integrity, trust and truth in our nation’s capital – especially in a day when debates are rarely about principles and policy but are instead about fake news, alternate facts, deceptive internet influence, half-truths, bold lies and countless shades of morally relative gray. At the Deseret News we felt it was exactly the right place for this conversation to begin. Hear highlights from our event with legendary reporter Bob Woodward, Elder D. Todd Christofferson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Pew Research Center president Michael Dimock on this special edition of, Therefore, What?

My name is Kurt Francom and today I have the opportunity to be in beautiful downtown Salt Lake City with and really, I'm across the world and we'll explain that in just a minute. But, let's start with you, Tom. I'm in the home of Tom Christofferson. How are you? Tom: Very well, thank you. Thanks for joining us. LS: Yeah, well, I'm excited to have this opportunity. And, mainly this interview came to be as you release your book, "That We May Be One, a Gay Mormons Perspective on Faith and Family" and you've been on the interview circuit for that. Tom: It's been an interesting journey. LS: I bet it's been very fulfilling to share your faith through, through this method. Tom: It has been a unique opportunity to be able to talk about my feelings about the Savior and the journey that I feel I have been led along. LS: Yep, obviously we'll get the, the obvious things out of the way. So, your last name is Christofferson and you are Elder Christofferson's brother. Tom: And he is my brother. LS: Oh, that's right. You are becoming more and more famous through this, these interviews. Tom: So, we are a family of five sons. He is the oldest and I'm the youngest. LS: Nice. I'm the youngest too, so I can, I can empathize with that. That's right. That's right. So, we're going as far as Australia to talk with President David Checketts. How are you a President Checketts? Checketts: I'm doing well. LS: Good. And now you don't live in Australia? I think many people recognize your name here in Utah, but you generally live in Connecticut. Is that right? Checketts: Yes.
Many of the greatest conflicts in our world have been attributed to religious differences. So if religion has often been attributed to the cause of conflict, is religion creating world peace, or destroying it? To answer this question we attend the Global Peace and Spiritual Life Lecture Series where the keynote speaker is Elder D. … Continue reading "Is Religion Destroying World Peace or Creating It? – with Elder D. As part of our series on meetings with Mormon General Authorities, we interview Meg and Jake Abhau as they relay the story of their September 2013 meeting with Mormon Apostle Elder D. Todd Christofferson. Meg and Jake appeared on episodes 508-510 of Mormon Stories discussing their experiences in early 2013 when their 13 year old son, Jon, came out to them as gay while they were living as committed, orthodox Mormons. During this period Meg and Jake met Tom Christofferson, brother of Mormon Apostle D. Todd Christofferson. At the time Meg and Jake met Tom he was an excommunicated gay Mormon man living in a committed relationship for over 18 years. After hearing the Abhau’s story, Tom graciously offered to arrange a meeting between them and his brother, Elder D. Todd Christofferson. In this episode Meg and Jake recount in detail their 1+ hour with apostle D. Todd Christofferson, which included: Elder D. Todd Christofferson acknowledging that the LDS Church may not be a safe place for our LGBT youth, Elder Christofferson acknowledging to Meg and Jake that personal revelation trumps revelation from Mormon leadership (but that he would never be able to admit this publicly to church members), and Meg informing Elder Christofferson that he and other LDS leadership had/have “blood on their hands” for the way that they have mishandled LGBT issues, contributing to a modern wave of LGBT youth suicides. Meg and Jake also express their disappointment with Elder Christofferson’s role in speaking as the representative for the LDS church during the November 2015 policy decision denouncing same-sex couples as apostates, and disallowing their children from being baptised into the Mormon church. They also discuss their respective decisions to leave the Mormon church after decades of orthodox membership.
In this episode, we discuss the talk “Abide in My Love” by Elder D. Todd Christofferson from the October 2016 General Conference. This was a dense talk with tons of ground to cover, but we unpacked as much of it as possible in our limited half hour. We discuss the potentially misleading idea of God’s love being “unconditional,” the balance between mercy and justice, and our thoughts on the Atonement. Also, this is the first episode where we’ve incorporated audio from the actual #LDSGenConf, so let us know how you liked it!
