Today's Old Newscast focuses on 8 May 2009 - the day that The Daily Telegraph publishes the first in a long series of stories about MPs expenses. We hear how the information that changed the way the British public view politics was leaked.Adam is joined by two people who were reporting at the heart of the story - former Whitehall Editor of the Telegraph, Chris Hope, and Jo Coburn - then of the BBC. This episode tells the story of what led to that day - disgruntled off duty soldiers, a ‘bunker' of journalists on a secret mission, and a disk full of information kept under high security. You can now listen to Newscast on a smart speaker. There are already examples around the world where the manufacturer helps to pay for the safe disposal of waste from their goods once used - such as electronic items or bottles. But what about the carbon dioxide produced from fossil fuels? Tom hears about the 'Carbon Take Back Obligation' concept - in which oil and gas producers would have to capture and store C02 - ratcheting up from 1% of what they produce by 2023, to 10% in 2030 and 100% by 2050. Some say it's impossible to meet the aims of the Paris Climate Agreement without it. But where would all that carbon dioxide go? How much storage space would we need for it and how much of the cost would trickle down to the petrol pump? Dr Tamsin Edwards of King's College, London, armed with statistics gathered by the Royal Geographical Society, joins Tom to add up the numbers. Producer: Anne-Marie Bullock Researcher: Sarah Goodman Produced in conjunction with the Royal Geographical Society. Particular thanks for this episode to Professor Stephen Peake of the Open University and Dr Chris Hope of the University of Cambridge. This episode goes in a different direction than normal but we aim to cover all things, as the name promises. Last week, a tragedy occurred in which a former NFL player, Philip Adams, shot and killed 6 people in Rock Hill, South Carolina, before taking his own life. While we are unaware of exact details, the incident leads to a discussion on the physical and mental state of players in the aftermath of their football careers. Chris Hope played in the NFL for 11 seasons and also served as a mentor to Adams, as the two hailed from the same hometown. Hope joins hosts Patrick Peterson and Bryant McFadden as they have an honest conversation about the side effects of playing football. We want to make it clear that Philip Adams is not the victim but we also want to explore ways for ex-players to lead healthier lives. Chris ends the chat by saying "We're all going through something. You ain't in this by yourself, so don't be afraid to ask for help." That message is for everyone as our crew tries to convey on this episode. Good people,Today's episode is the continuation of my conversation with Chris Hope, National Collegiate champion with Florida State University, Super Bowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and author of the book P.R.O.S.In this second part of our conversation, we talked about Chris' project, the I See Hope For the Future academy, where he aims to teach young athletes to be professionals in the field and in every aspect of their lives. From how to dress and talk properly to manage their finances, Chris' idea is to be who he needs to be. He also shared his view on the incongruence of being successful at one thing and terrible in all the rest. For him, it makes no sense being a spectacular athlete and a terrible husband, or brother, or son. In This Episode, You Will Learn:True professionals excel in every area of their lives (4:12)For an athlete, their body is their corporation (8:30)How we do one thing is how we do everything (11:15)The things young athletes need to be taught (15:42)We tend to get caught in what we see (17:40)Yes or BS:Children owe everything to their parents (21:06)Pro athletes need a coach, other than the team coach (21:48)Jerome "The Bus" is the hardest hitting running back you ever faced (21:58)Women are smarter than men (24:32)Kaepernick is misunderstood (25:05)Setting boundaries gets easier with practice (26:57)Resources Mentioned:Book: Chris Hope - P.R.O.S: Parents Relying on Their Seeds Connect with Chris:InstagramTwitter See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Good people, Today I'm joined by Chris Hope, National Collegiate champion with Florida State University, Super Bowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and author of the book P.R.O.S. Chris Hope's truth is about setting boundaries with his family and loved ones as a famous and wealthy professional NFL player. We had a fantastic conversation about success and fame, what happens after we reach them, and the pressure of being the family's savior. In this first part of the interview, he described the feedback he got from his family and friends after exposing profound truths about the sorrow and the pain he felt during his career, many times inflicted by his own intimate circle. We also talked about how our culture and society influence successful elite athletes and the impact that pressure has on African American families. In This Episode, You Will Learn:The things we do to solve problems we know of (7:11)What we think money can fix, but it can't (9:49)Realizing his book wasn't just another athlete's book (13:20)Correct and then heal (16:22)What society expects (demands) from elite athletes (19:04)Learning the difference between feelings and emotions and how to deal with them (28:31)Resources Mentioned:Book: Chris Hope - P.R.O.S: Parents Relying on Their Seeds Connect with Chris:Instagram See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

iPM listener Chris Hope knew he was entitled to Shared Parental Leave when his baby was born. When he was told he'd be paid at the statutory rate, rather than the same as female colleagues on maternity leave, he decided to challenge it.
