This week we're joined by two-time Scottish Anglo Celtic Plate Team member Catherine Cowie. You'd think that would top the bill for our discussion, you thought wrong. Catherine first leads us through her own running odyssey and of course we spend a good while chatting all things ACP and the memorable events that took place on the North Inch in March 2024. However, Catherine has been a busy lass, her recent undertaking of the gruelling Hardmoors 110 on the Cleveland Way National Trail dominates our chatter. Catherine gives us an inspirational take on her last year that started with an ankle break in June 2023 and ended on a magnificent Hardmooors 110 finish line. Bouncebackability at its finest. We are privileged to hear about her training, find out about her coach and Catherine is brim-full of sharing tips andlessons learned. An extra special review of her fav kit and gear will give you some food for thought. Oh, talking about food we also give airtime for some discussion on one of our fav topics! Be ready to get googling new races a plenty as Catherine lets us know what's up next, there's no stopping this remarkable human-being. She's keeping it lit! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/youngheartsrunfree/message

122. Power data with Andy Dubois: prescribing + measuring running intensity Andy Dubois is a world renowned ultra running coach who takes a data back scientific approach to his profession. In this ep we unpack one of Andy's biggest point of difference in his coaching style; the use of a wearable power device to track training intensity, prescribe race pace and manage training plans. We learn all about the world of power data for runners and how this could be the biggest hack to unlock your athletic potential. Andy has a strong competitive history in the ultra endurance space, winning countless word class ultratrail races including 114- mile Hardmoors, Pennine 100 mile Challenge, breaking the course record by 4.5 hours just to name 2. Andy is both passionate and meticulous in his approach to coaching and competing at the highest level. Andy's coaching style is ahead of the game and we loved getting his expert insight to running data, pacing and performance. We cover: - What power training is and how to use it as a runner - Power for pacing and race predictions - Limitations of pace to program run intensity - Intertwining heart rate data - Interpreting and analysing power data You can learn more about Andy Dubois on his website https://mile27.com.au/employees/andy-dubois/ or Instagram @mile27ultracoach We imagine you're going to have lots to think about on your next run when considering intensity and heart rate data. On this episode Daniel and Dave spend time catching up on the previous races that they have taken part in. Dave tells us all about his Hardmoors 200 experience walking away from the event with 100 epic miles along the stunning trails up north. And Daniel goes into some details, perhaps sometimes sharing a bit too much, about his long awaited finish at the 2022 Grand Union Canal Race, finishing 145 miles in central London. Dave is also fresh back from Glastonbury so gives us a little insight into what the weekend was like there too. Our show this week begins with a short interview from a runner who came through Southsea last week by the name of Paul Minter. He is running the entire coast of the UK and was 2500 miles into this run when he approached our city. Daniel took some time with Paul and some of his friends to help steer them towards Gunwarf where he was stopping for the night. What an epic challenge! As always everyone, thank you for listening and do get in touch with us if you'd like to share a story or running tale.
Part two of our Montane Spine Race double feature - Chris and Jason are joined by Christopher Cowley, a highly accomplished ultra runner who made his Spine debut at this year's edition of the iconic race across the Pennine Way. With wins at the Hardmoors 160 and 200, Christopher came into the 2022 Spine Race with as much experience as you could possibly hope to have short of an actual completion or living on the Pennine Way itself. This episode is full of insights from a first-time finisher of the notorious 268-mile Winter gauntlet of a race. Christopher talks training, nutrition, what he'd do differently next time, advice for potential entrants, and the surprising amount of due diligence that went into that seemingly barbaric finish.Less pressingly, the trio debate the merits of the different varieties of chocolate buttons, and the Christophers labour a toothpaste analogy...To get in touch, email: thepod@run4it.com. Run to the Hills - Episode 57 - Ryk Downes Punk PantherRyk Downes, who in his teenage years was a top Orienteer before a running hiatus of over 20 years. This break from running ended when he ran the 2003 London Marathon as the Punk Panther. Since then Ryk has completed many Marathons, Ultra Marathons and other long distance challenges. In January 2016 Ryk collapsed and ‘died' from a hereditary heart condition. He was thankfully revived at the scene by passers-by by using a defibrillator and performing CPR.A subsequent triple heart bypass in February 2016 saw him return to running in the Leeds Half Marathon three months later. Ryk then returned to ultra-distance running with the Hardmoors 60 in September 2016.Whilst recovering from his heart attack Ryk was looking for Ultra Marathons near to home. Finding few and wanting to give something back to the sport he has launched the Punk Panther Series from Otley. He is currently writing a book about his running experiences and the road to recovery and how for many people he has become an inspiration.https://www.punkpanther.co.uk/Each week we'll bring you interviews with runners from the front, back and middle of the pack. Kim Collison needs no introduction to ultra, fell or mountain runners. He has represented GB twice in the World Trail Championships. In 2020 he broke the long-standing Lakeland 24 hours record with 78 tops in 23 hours 45 minutes. He has won races and broken records for many of the UK's toughest ultras including Lakeland 50, Lakeland Trails, Lakes in a Day, Arc of Attrition 100 miles, and Hardmoors 55. Abroad he has competed in UTMB, CCC, TDS and Skyrunning World Championships. Kim has completed the Bob Graham Round in summer and winter - setting the winter record in 2019. Episode 42 is all about the Hardmoors 60! Guest host Sinead Battarbee steps in to chat with Mark Thistlethwaite and Kev Robinson about how they got on running in the HM60. We chat about the race and the changes made to allow it to go ahead during these extraordinary times of COVID pandemic. Staggered starts, outdoor checkpoints and not knowing what place you finished in until everyone's come in! Brilliant work by race directors Jon & Shirley! We chat about Mark's brilliant performance taking almost 3 hours off his time from 2019 and with Kev about doing too much and still taking nearly 50mins off his time from 2018. Huge thanks to Sinead for keeping the boys on topic!

From July 2019 Jacob had to stop running due to "Gilmore's Groin", a debilitating injury that left him unable to walk for more than 15 minutes. Following surgery on 18th December 2019 Jacob has been focussed on training and getting back to his best. By August 2020 Jacob not only completed the gruelling Hardmoors 110, a 110 time trail race. But he won the race breaking the course record! This is a fascinating chat with a very down to earth champion who eloquently reminds us that we can all achieve a huge amount through self belief and hard work. And of course with help from amazing friends. Jacob would particularly like to thank Sabina, Aga, Gosla, Tadek and Marek. What an amazing support crew Jacob has! Thanks also to Jacob's sponsors La Sportiva, Coros, Mountain Fuel, Bridgedale and Mountain Massage Sports Therapy!

I really don’t know where to start with Sharon Record holder of both the Jogle and the Mizen Head to Malin Head, winner of races such as the Hardmoors 110 miler, the Fire and Ice 250km race, The Himalayan LA Ultra The High Ultra, Commonwealth 24hr champion, Silver in the European 100k & 24hr with a 17 year career racing at the top for GB, but she hadn’t discovered her hidden talent until her early 20s and after a difficult up bringing she really recoloured her life through the sport of running. Jonathan Steele had an unusual journey into the world of ultrarunning many years ago. A competitive bodybuilder and martial artist, the shift to ultrarunning wasn't exactly on the cards until he was holidaying in the Lake District and a sign for a local trail route caught his interest. That route was the Bob Graham Round and he decided to make that his first foray into ultrarunning! In this episode, Jody speaks with Jonathan about attempting Bob Graham, his three attempts at the UTMB (and why the first one failed somewhat...) and just what attracted him to running some of the most physically and mentally challenging races in the UK, including The Hill - a 160 mile race up and down Shining Tor 55 times! For many, Jonathan is, of course, better known as the race director for the Hardmoors Race Series and explains where the ideas for the trail and ultra series came from, what the Hardmoors community is like and the best way to tackle the races are for a newbie.
