One of the toughest jobs for which so many people are finding themselves in the field of caregiving. More than 15 million people are taking care of those that are 65 years and older in the USA. Heidi Godman of WSRQ interviews Dr. Odell Glenn Glenn for 22 minutes and 10 seconds, who is a caregiver and author of "Caregiving-The Inspirational Manual". Heidi Godman is also a caregiver herself. Both of her parents have Parkinson's disease. Unlike Heid Godman, Dr. Odell Glenn actually lives with the care recipients to which both have different degrees of dementia. Amidst all of the ups and down, (income reduction, isolated socially, hard physical work), Dr. Odell Glenn explains how he does all he does each day while caregiving for 2 parents by himself. It's not easy but faith and hope give him strength each day. Dr. Glenn, at the time of the interview, is on the verge of graduating with his Ph.D. in chemical engineering. The writing of the book was very meditative and therapeutic. Prayer, Bible reading, scripture, community, jogging, walking were practices that helped him not burn out via all of the social, emotional, and physical problems that can develop. Create a balanced life to sustain and endure the long journey. Big hugs to all full-time caregivers.

We’re all looking for ways to build cognitive fitness and resiliency. The pathway to achieving that goal can be found in laying down new memories through skill building. It turns out it’s never been easier to learn new things from home, as Harvard Health Letter executive editor Heidi Godman recently discovered. A solution is a mouse click away. Apps on your smart phone also offer easy ways to learn at your own pace.
We all know we need to try to keep moving during these unusual times of social distancing, but where do we start? We consulted Heidi Godman, executive editor of Harvard Health Letter, who’s been researching this subject. Bottom line? Keep it simple.
In this episode of Sarasota Memorial HealthCasts, orthopedic surgeon and medical director of Sarasota Memorial's orthopedic team Edward Stolarksi, MD, joins veteran medical journalist Heidi Godman for a Q&A on the latest innovations and options in hip and knee replacements. You can also watch the video recording on our YouTube channel here. For more health tips & news you can use from experts you trust, sign up for Sarasota Memorial's monthly digital newsletter, Healthe-Matters.
