"Everyone tells me I'm terrifying." The powerhouse agent talks about being a woman in a male-dominated world and growing the careers of artists like David Guetta, Marlon Hoffstadt and more. What does it take to become a powerhouse agent in the male-dominated electronic music industry? No one can answer this question better than Maria May, a name that might be familiar to anyone who's had a brush with big-ticket dance music over the past 30 years. May is a longtime agent at CAA, or Creative Artists Agency, one of the largest booking agencies in the world. She was first hired a little over a decade ago to expand its representation of electronic music, back when the company saw that DJs were primed to become the new rockstars. She now looks after major acts like David Guetta, Paul Kalkbrenner, Marlon Hoffstadt and Sara Landry. But she isn't just a fierce businesswoman. She's also a tireless advocate for equity and inclusion in club culture. In this conversation recorded live at the International Music Summit in Ibiza, she talks about the obstacles she's faced over the course of her career as she's actively rebuilt the rooms in which major decisions are made. She was first inspired by her involvement in Britain's illegal rave scene, she recalls, which turned her onto the power of activism and showed her how on-the-ground organising can lead to real-life policy change. She also addresses the negative narrative taking hold of the music industry and the opportunities at hand to make positive, collective change. Listen to the episode in full. -Chloe Lula

"We were searching for our own voice." The Chicago artist talks about pioneering the sound of acid house and the spirit of experimentation in early dance music. The Chicago-based Nathaniel Pierre Jones—AKA DJ Pierre—may be best known for forming the "squelch" we now call acid. When he and his friends Spanky and Herb J picked up a TB-303 in a pawn shop, they captured the sound of the knobs being turned as a pattern started to run. While this wasn't how the instrument was intended to be used, they were enthralled by the result, reproducing it and releasing it as an EP called Acid Tracks under the name Phuture in 1987. The result was the birth of the acid house era and a new, international musical craze. In this RA Exchange recorded live at International Music Summit in Ibiza, Jones retraces the acid craze and the nature of experimentation and risk-taking more generally. In his view, there's a marked absence of this mindset in contemporary dance music as many producers have become accustomed to using sample packs, presets and generally operating within workflows that stymie originality. At the end of the interview, he raises important questions around if and how the music being released today enhances our lives, as well as what a truly transcendent and mutually supportive industry could look like. "What is it about my music that's touching other people?" One of the forefathers of techno reflects on his legacy, the state of techno music and the city of Detroit live from IMS. Most people in nightlife are familiar with the name Juan Atkins. One of the originators of techno, he grew up in Belleville, a middle-class suburb of Detroit, and would become one of the Belleville Three alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. This first wave of Detroit techno artists was inspired by the late night emissions of radio DJ The Electrifying Mojo—a late-night presenter who famously mixed different synth music, like Krautrock and the German outfit Kraftwerk—and the writing of futurists like Alvin Toffler, who imagined a different, utopic vision of urban life and technology. In this keynote interview recorded live at International Music Summit in Ibiza, Atkins reflects on his roots and the musical movement that's grown from his first experiments with techno in the '80s. Returning to his adolescence, he unpacks the origins of his electro collaboration Cybotron, his solo project Model 500 (coming to Houghton this year) and his label, Metroplex, which became a blueprint for a hoard of techno imprints that would emerge in its wake. Now 61, Atkins also reflects on the broader impact music has had on his life—he has given lectures on the intersection of physics, music and spirituality—as well as the remaining stones left unturned as he enters the (very much still active) sunset in his career. As TOKiMONSTA, Jennifer Lee has made a name for herself as a Grammy-nominated music producer, pioneering the L.A. Beat Scene and ranking as one of the top 100 DJs worldwide. Her entire discography has drawn critical praise, collaborating with a long list of artists including Anderson Paak, Earthgang, and Ryuichi Sakamoto, and remixing artists like Sia and Beck. In 2015, Lee was diagnosed with Moyamoya, a rare brain disease that left her unable to communicate or comprehend music, but she persevered through two surgeries and cognitive therapy to make a triumphant comeback at Coachella in 2016. Her first album post-surgery, Lune Rouge, was nominated for ‘Electronic Album of the Year' at the 2019 Grammy Awards. In 2020, she released her fourth full-length album, Oasis Nocturno, showcasing her progression as an artist with a mix of house, funk-soul, and hip-hop. Throughout the pandemic, she continued to innovate by hosting the popular music program Lost Resort on Twitch, collaborating on an NFT collection, and curating a livestream event for Women's History Month. Always looking to combine her creativity with innovation, TOKiMONSTA continues to push boundaries across music, fashion, tech and beyond. Toki has now entered the world of tech having cofounded a music tech start up by the name of “Sona.” The aim of Sona is to democratize music streaming for artists in a world where the pay per stream is not adequate for a musician's cost of living. The protocol and platform will reconstruct the scaffolding of music streaming so that audiences still have access to all the music they desire, while allowing artist's payout to equate to what they truly deserve. In 2022, Sona raised approximately 7 million in funding and is in development. The company is aiming for a mid-2023 launch. In this episode of Takin' Care of Lady Business®, recorded in Ibiza, Spain at the International Music Summit, host Jennifer Justice sits down with special guest TOKiMONSTA, a DJ and music producer who shares her experiences as a woman of color and encourages listeners to lead with their best foot forward, choosing to represent who they really are instead of taking shortcuts. The episode also explores her tech start-up, Sona, which rewards both artists and curators, offers a fairer payment system and uses blockchain technology. Here is what to expect on this week's show: Sona's plan to revolutionize the music industry with a streaming platform that allows users to stream music for free and invest in artists by buying the streaming rights to their songs. How Sona uses blockchain technology in the music industry to bring transparency and efficiency to the ecosystem for musicians. Challenges for female producers in the music industry, gender bias, fundraising, and democratization in the music industry. Quotes: "With the internet, it kind of opens the floodgates for people to kind of just steal music, and that's really difficult for people who make music... I think technology and music are so intertwined now that it's kind of hard to say that they're two separate entities. Like, they're very linked." - TOKiMONSTA "I never wanted to be a DJ. You know, I wanted to make music. And now it's like I kind of love both and I feel that both are very different and dynamic skills that I've had to learn to kind of work on." - TOKiMONSTA "As far as making music and producing, that's something that came out of just having such a deeply rooted love for music. And then one day, I decided, I think I can do that, you know." – TOKiMONSTA "I feel like the more diversity we have, especially in music, the more interesting it gets because you have all these different perspectives and different ways of thinking.” - TOKiMONSTA https://tokimonsta.com https://sona.stream https://www.internationalmusicsummit.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. This weeks we are back at the International Music Summit with a female led conversation on the Power of Voice. The episode was recorded LIVE in the Garden Suite of Destino Ibiza and was hosted by Eco activist, documentary maker and Co-founder of EarthRise Alice Aedy. Alice has travelled to the climate front lines to document the human cost of climate change to give a human face and share the human stories that are all too often missing from climate storytelling. Alice guided a beautiful conversation about how we can all use our voice to empower our art, fuel music, inspire movement and make a positive change in a world that seems transfixed on doom talk when it comes to climate. Sophie Shnapp of Earth Percent spoke of the idea of having a voice through change making. So having a voice through music and having a political stance and feels that being at places like IMS is and important place to share this. Mollie Mendoza works in the healing arts with dance and embodiment and is a female empowerment coach. She shared the way we use our voice internally and externally and says our inner voice is just as important as the one we express to others and create boundaries and communicate and spoke of the art of relating. Poet Ebyan Zanini shared the way her voice has influenced her art and healing and how both are intrinsically linked. In October The Reset rebel will be hosting our second Ibiza installment of our Women´ - s voice activation retreat 14 and 15 October 2023 - More details here: www.resetrebelproductions.com
This is final part of our series of podcasts recorded at the International Music Summit in Ibiza, better known as IMS. Cocoon was a the first party to bring Techno to Ibiza. Sven Väth was a huge name in 1998 but bringing the real sound to what, up til that point, been a musical landscape that was probably best described as light-hearted was a big risk. But they made it work at twenty seasons later a legend had been born. Johannes Goller was there from the very start, and despite youth and inexperience was soon the main man for Cocoon in Ibiza. He has the stories to prove it.This was a wide ranging discussion covering Ibiza today, and Johannes' new party Trip, but going all the way back to the very first season of Cocoon and the challenges of bringing a fresh sound to the island. We also discuss after-parties, local politics, the changing nature of Techno in the 2000s and beyond, and much else besides. This was a great way to wrap up our IMS series. Jurgis Didžiulis - a columbian Lithuanian - pops in for a chat and tells us how he is working with companies who wish to shift their organisational culture and has been doing so through music for a very long time. He used to be an artist and is now a music artisan and we hear some special live tracks on the show. Plus we End the episode with a conversation with Chabeli Chain who is from the Venezuelan Amazon rainforrest. She is a vocalist, musician and DJ as well as an Indigenous rights advisor. She tells us how her vision is to bring the music and natural wisdom of the indigenous people to pop culture and electronic dance movement.
Last week we were lucky enough to be invited to record three podcasts at the International Music Summit in Ibiza, better known as IMS. In the second of these three conversations, we welcomed the Head Of Music at the Night League to the stage. Leslee Tatman is, amongst other things, responsible for the full season of programming at Ushuaia and Hi (formerly Space), and is as such a very important voice in Ibiza nightlife. We discussed a wide range of topics including the closure of Space in 2016, her involvement in Pete Tong's attempt to change the image of San Antonio a few years before that, the development of Ushuaia, and her parallel involvement with the music scene in Bali. This was a great conversation that could've sat on the main feed without any special preamble. You will enjoy it... as you will part 3 which will drop next Tuesday. Last week we were lucky enough to be invited to record three podcasts at the International Music Summit in Ibiza, better known as IMS. We'll be posting each of these conversations over the next week, starting with today's episode which features a genuine Ibiza legend, DJ Pippi. A man with a real claim to having been the first DJ to play House music on the White Island, he held residencies at Pacha and Ku (later known as Privilege) during the 1980s and has been a fixture on the scene ever since. Recording these conversations live, and in front of an audience, is a totally different proposition to a one-on-one chat in a studio or on the phone and this episode reflects that. But we get some great stories, and the definite sense that Pippi is a charismatic performer with an incredible history. You'll definitely enjoy each of these three live recordings, and this is a great place to start. Huge thanks to Ben Turner and the whole IMS team for inviting us to be part of the conference. Episode 105: For a man whose name is rhyming slang in the UK for something going wrong, most of what Pete Tong touches goes very right. He's been enormously influential in the international electronic music scene for four decades: as a broadcaster, a jet-setting DJ who has released dozens of mix albums, at the influential FFRR and Three Six Zero labels, and now, as co-founder of the International Music Summit. We invited Pete onto the podcast to talk about A&R in the dance music world: how it has changed, how it works now, the role that good taste plays, the challenges of keeping up with the TikTok whirlwind, his thoughts on modern artistry and fandom, and what he thinks about the use of AI in future A&R approaches. https://www.internationalmusicsummit.com/summit-schedule ------
A regular Billboard Dance Power Player, Ben Turner is a true industry pioneer. He is notable for producing and directing over 30 documentaries about dance music, co-founding the International Music Summit alongside Pete Tong, often described as the "TED of music conferences", as well as founding the Association for Electronic Music, a not-for-profit trade body designed to preserve, protect and promote the electronic music industry worldwide. For the last 2 decades, Ben has been at the forefront of artist management and the culture surrounding it with brand partnerships, film + TV, Web3, and curated events. His company, Graphite Media, manages groundbreaking artists such as Richie Hawtin, ANNA, and Sama' Abdulhadi. In addition, he is an advisor and investor in the next wave of music tech with John Acquaviva, Rishi Patel, and Richie Hawtin's VC, Plus Eight Equity. Bradley Gunn is still championed as one of the most inspiring figures to enter the music industry. We could all do with some positivity at the moment, and the story of Bradley Gunn Raver is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Bradley unintentionally went viral through his sober raving antics, attracting everyone from all corners of the industry for all the right reasons by breaking down barriers worldwide with his message of positivity and advocacy of inclusion. In this very special episode and a personal one for me, Bradley reveals his first experience in a rave, the dancing videos from his early days unintentionally going viral, dancing everywhere from Vietnam to Italy and America, why he realised it was the right time to withdraw from the industry, his favourite memories and best events he went to around the world, and numerous spontaneous moments including staying at Joris Voorn's house, dancing on a beach with Seth Troxler & lunch with Kölsch. There's some great advice in this episode on authenticity, retaining integrity, doing what's right for your happiness & mental health, building your brand gradually, not forcing the message of sobriety on people, and there's some very inspiring words on how Brad overcame his barrier of nerves to do a keynote interview in Ibiza for International Music Summit. You can also find out if Bradley Gunn Raver will return to the dancefloor in a post-Covid world. Brad was one of the first people I met in the industry, and bringing his story to life when I was editing his monthly rave review through Ministry Of Sound is a memory I'll never forget. It was an absolute pleasure to have today's guest on The U-Turn Podcast. We had a lot to cover so the interview has been split into two episodes. Incredibly we went from discussions around raving to open banking. For those who don't know Bradley, first and foremost he is known for his iconic rave goggles, leggings, self-branded t-shirt, and for promoting his mantra “Love Life and Rave”. It's also important to note that he only ever raves sober. In 2015, people started to notice his dance moves and unique attire in clubs around his hometown city of Bristol and began to share videos of him on social media resulting in him becoming an internet sensation. He went on to undergo 38 hours of none-stop back-to-back raves. Since then, he has starred in BBC Three's Amazing Humans, was named Mixmag's Raver of the Year 2017, has had rave reviews published on the Ministry of Sound's website, undertook a keynote interview at the International Music Summit 2018 and has collaborated with respected DJs in dance videos including Carl Cox, Seth Troxler, The Martinez Brothers, Nicole Moudaber, Pan-Pot, Peggy Gou, Joris Voorn, Maceo Plex, and Jamie Jones. In the podcast, we discuss the subject of Mental Health in-depth and what it means for Bradley as he often speaks about the mental health benefits of raving, and offers support to anyone in their musical journey hitting struggles. Bradley lives with Asperger's Syndrome and through raving, he is determined to spread a message of positivity and happiness. He also illustrates that the stigma of diagnosis shouldn't restrict aims in life. Clubbing helps Bradley overcome his feelings of self-consciousness and struggles in social environments. I would love to invite Bradley back on the podcast at some point when we are through this particular stage with the virus, so we can discuss mental health and the effects of what is currently happening in more detail. *Please be aware this was prior to the current situation* Part 2 of this to follow! As most of you already know, this week should have been the International Music Summit here in Ibiza but unfortunately due to the Covid -19 pandemic, it had to be moved to 2021. IMS has been missed by us all over the last few days, it’s a massive highlight of the year for our industry but hopefully, in this next podcast with Ben Turner who is one of the co-founders of IMS, some good memories from past editions will come back to you as well as some really interesting insight and thoughts on the current status and also on the future of the dance music industry. More information on IMS here: https://www.internationalmusicsummit.com/
Danykas Dj was born in Lisbon, Portugal. The love of music has always been a constant in her life, atmosphere felt early on in their home. A musical spirit cultivated by her father, a passion that exists in the whole family. Never leaving the corners of her room, in 2015 comes the first invitation to expose itself to the public in the Room System Project at Casa Independente, Lisbon ,held by Seres Producoes where she's working currently. Was the place where she could express her vibes through the simbiose of African Electronic Music and Deep House. The desire was increasing, the willingness to take the aspect of music more 'serious' as well, which allowed her to go through places like Lux Frágil, Festival Musa Cascais, Douro Rock Festival, Maus Hábitos, Musicbox Lisboa, two clubs in UK and host a Show at Quântica Rádio invited by Violet. ________ Satelite is an ambassador of the new Angolan sound as well as one of the pioneers of African Electronic Music. According to The Fader Magazine- “One of the very few producers who embraces house music, yet does not shy away from kuduro, the style in which he first honed his skills.” Satelite's talent has taken him to some of the most recognized event, such as The Red Bull Music Academy, Ibiza’s International Music Summit and Boiler Room.
