We said we'd do the 2019 Child's Play at some point after we were unable to cover it during its release due to the theater's projector issues, and here we are! Only a few months late. However, we were particularly surprised by this reimagining of Chucky the killer doll, who is transformed into an uncanny valley-style smartbot rather than a voodoo serial killer. While we admit the themes are sort of on-the-nose, this Child's Play is decidedly entertaining and, for the most part, just a lot of fun. Yeah, She's All That might seem like a weird pick for a B&BR episode. But we're a weird podcast, and we enjoy a wide variety of films. That includes '90s teen romantic comedies, of course (and we're still itching to do that Mean Girls episode). Going in with few expectations and no viewings of the spoilerific trailer, we found Pet Sematary to be an okay film that doesn't match the spookiness and cheese of the original. It's also not that offensive, which mostly translates to: it really has nothing new to say despite some of its plot flips and a changed finale. We found the acting to be fair besides John Lithgow, the scares occasionally effective, and the overall theme very muddled. Shazam! isn't an intensely popular DC franchise, so it was surprising to see it getting a fairly early release in the DCEU. But most of DC's bigger franchises have already been busts, with Batman and Superman getting poor reception and the Justice League going down in flames. So why not let Shazam out of the bag? We were pleasantly surprised with how well this movie captures the fun, fairly lighthearted spirit of the character, and we talk about Zachary Levi's portrayal, the juxtaposition between emo kid Billy Batson and his superhero alter-ego, Mark Strong wearing sunglasses everywhere he goes, and more! We know that Happy Death Day 2U is already out and in theaters, but what's the point in seeing the sequel if you haven't covered the first one? This Brian Yuzna-directed film really has no bearing on the previous SNDN films, and it lacks a lot of Christmas cheer too. What it does have, though, are bugs, Clint Howard, and more bugs. Blood and Black Rum Podcast continues its coverage of all of the most recent Marvel movies with a look at the small but extremely fun Ant-Man and the Wasp. We're big fans of Paul Rudd, and so he can pretty much do no wrong in a film, but we find that this movie is uniquely less about Ant-Man than it is about Hank Pym and the Wasp. That leads to some interesting reveals, some Macguffins, and some great fight scenes using seamless CGI. We had a lot of fun with this light-hearted romp, and we think it shows in this episode. We said we were going to do a western, so we're doing a western! On the docket for this episode is Sam Peckinpah's classic 1973 film Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, a classic caper film where a sheriff chases an outlaw. In this case, it's James Coburn as the grizzled Pat Garrett and Kris Kristofferson as an old man playing the young Billy the Kid. We talk about Peckinpah's simple plot, the different cuts of the film, how both titular characters are developed, and of course we talk about Bob Dylan's awkward appearances in every scene. We're back a little late for St. Patrick's Day, but we're still celebrating with our annual tradition: the Leprechaun series! We're on to Leprechaun 3 this year, when Warwick Davis goes to Las Vegas for some reason. You can bet there's gambling, boobies, and even more weirdly funny sequences in this sequel, but even with all of the tongue-in-cheek humor, it's hard to truly appreciate this film. We try our best, and we muddle through with a very erratic episode as we try to discuss Leprechaun 3 even when it's hard to put into words how ridiculous it really is.
