In this episode, we discuss the complex themes of gentrification, systemic racism, and seduction at play in Bernard Rose's Candyman. We also discuss who wins in the battle between Candyman and Bloody Mary - or is it Helen? We're drinking Saranac's newly revitalized White IPA on this episode! Richard Urwin, Chair of the Investment Committee at Saranac Partners, the $6bn UK wealth manager, joins Alan Dunne in this episode to discuss how he is approaching asset allocation at the current juncture. They discuss how long term valuations and asset class return forecast help inform Saranac's strategic asset allocation and delve into some of the structural forces that may influence the economic outlook and asset class returns in the coming decade. While shifting demographics, climate change, high deficits and rising debt levels all have the potential to contribute to higher inflation and higher bond yields, Richard is cautious about being too pessimistic about the outlook and sees good opportunity in credit and alternative assets and strategies. They also discuss how Saranac think about selecting and sizing hedge funds in their portfolios and how this has changed in a higher interest rate environment.-----EXCEPTIONAL RESOURCE: Find Out How to Build a Safer & Better Performing Portfolio using this FREE NEW Portfolio Builder Tool-----Follow Niels on Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube or via the TTU website.IT's TRUE ? – most CIO's read 50+ books each year – get your FREE copy of the Ultimate Guide to the Best Investment Books ever written here. And you can get a free copy of my latest book “Ten Reasons to Add Trend Following to Your Portfolio” here.Learn more about the Trend Barometer here.Send your questions to info@toptradersunplugged.comAnd please share this episode with a like-minded friend and leave an honest Rating & Review on iTunes or Spotify so more people can discover the podcast.Follow Alan on Twitter.Follow Richard on LinkedInEpisode TimeStamps: 02:45 - Introduction to Richard Urwin06:31 - A noticeable shift?08:49 - What is Saranac's investment philosophy?13:06 - Dealing with structural shifts as an asset allocator18:07 - How confident are they in forecasts?24:24 - Balancing competing forces30:08 - How Saranac builds balanced portfolios33:55 - Do they consider supply shocks in...

The 6-foot-1 Brown was 9 of 15 from the field and made three 3-pointers in her 113th career game for the Wolverines. Laila Phelia added 20 points for Michigan, which shot 46% from the field, while holding North Carolina to 32%. Today Western Michigan at (5) Notre Dame, 12:00 p.m. Eastern Michigan at Wright State, 1:00 p.m. MLB – Michael Lorenzen, Tigers finalize $8.5M, 1-year contract Right-hander Michael Lorenzen and the Detroit Tigers finalized their $8.5 million, one-year contract. Lorenzen was 8-6 with a 4.24 ERA in 18 starts last season with the Los Angeles Angels. Since making his major league debut with the Cincinnati Reds in 2015, he is 31-29 with a 4.10 ERA. The 30-year-old Lorezen began his career as a starter before mostly pitching out of the bullpen for the Reds. He can earn an additional $1.5 million in performance bonuses for innings: $250,000 each for 100, 125, 150, 175, 195 and 205. MLB – Bellinger looking forward to fresh start after joining Cubs Cody Bellinger is looking forward to a fresh start with the Chicago Cubs and showing that he can once again be a productive hitter. He went from winning the NL MVP with the Dodgers in 2019 to being cut by Los Angeles in November. The years in between were marked by injuries and plummeting production. Bellinger says he will “be able to learn from” his experience. The Cubs hope he can experience a bit of a resurgence at the plate while giving them an elite glove in center field as they try to climb back toward contention. They finished third in the NL Central at 74-88. It was their second straight losing season after making the playoffs five of the previous six years, but they went 40-31 in their final 71 games. FIFA – More than 25 million watched World Cup final in U.S. Argentina’s dramatic World Cup final victory over France is the second most-watched soccer match of any kind in the United States. That’s according to early numbers from Nielsen, Fox and Telemundo. Sunday’s match had an English- and Spanish-language combined audience of 25,783,000. That trails the 2015 Women’s World Cup final that was watched by 26.7 million when the United States beat Japan 5-2. That match aired in prime time in most of the U.S. Fox’s numbers from Sunday should increase when the “match-only” rating is released later Tuesday. Golf – Masters – Masters to keep criteria, invite all eligible players in ’23 The Masters is keeping its criteria the same for next year. That means 16 players from Saudi-funded LIV Golf will be at Augusta National to compete for a green jacket. Club chairman Fred Ridley says he’s disappointed in the fractured nature of golf. But he says the focus of the Masters is to bring the top players together from around the world. The 16 players from LIV Golf include six former champions and six who qualify by being in the top 50 in the world ranking. Ridley said the club still reserves the right to alter its criteria for 2024. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Washington Capitals 4, Detroit Red Wings 3 – OT Capitals 4, Red Wings 3 – OT – Orlov scores in OT, Caps hand Red Wings 6th straight loss Nic Dowd scored twice in 11 seconds, Dmitry Orlov had the overtime winner and the Washington Capitals won their second in a row by beating the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 with Alex Ovechkin still waiting for his next major milestone. Ovechkin, for a third consecutive game, was unable to score his 801st goal and tie Gordie Howe for second on the NHL career list. He remained stuck on 800 with Howe's sons Mark and Marty in attendance. Even without a goal from Ovechkin, the Capitals will take the victory on Orlov's goal with 21.3 seconds left in 3-on-3 overtime. The Red Wings have lost six in a row. NFL – National Football League – Week 15 Yesterday Green Bay Packers 24, Los Angeles Rams 12 Packers 24, Rams 12 – Packers defeat Rams 24-12 to keep playoff hopes alive A.J. Dillon ran for two scores, Aaron Rodgers threw a touchdown pass to Aaron Jones and the Green Bay Packers kept their playoff hopes afloat with a 24-12 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Dillon put Green Bay ahead for good with an 8-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and also scored from 1 yard out in the third period. He left midway through the second half to be evaluated for a concussion. Rodgers went 22 of 30 for 229 yards with a touchdown and interception to win his ninth straight “Monday Night Football” start. NFL – AP source: Eagles QB Hurts suffers sprained right shoulder A person with knowledge of the matter says Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts suffered a sprained right shoulder and his status for Philadelphia's game at Dallas is uncertain. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team hasn't announced the injury. Hurts has led the Eagles to a 13-1 mark and the best record in the NFL. The 24-year-old has morphed into a serious NFL MVP candidate in his second season as a starter. NFL – Bears’ Jenkins out of hospital after injuring neck in game Chicago Bears offensive lineman Teven Jenkins has been released from the hospital and was seeing specialists Monday, a day after he was carted from the field with a neck injury during a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Coach Matt Eberflus called the news “encouraging,” but had few details about the extent of the injury. He said Jenkins was released from the hospital on Sunday and was seeing specialists to “double-check and cross-check everything.” Whether Jenkins will play again this season was not clear. Jenkins went down while blocking for David Montgomery on a running play. Duggan has started 41 games during his four seasons at TCU. The senior could have returned for another season because all players were granted an extra year of eligibility after the 2020 season was altered by the pandemic. The Horned Frogs play Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 31. The winner will play for the national championship. NCAAMBKB – Purdue holds top spot; UConn climbs to No. 2 Purdue maintained its grasp on No. 1 in the AP men's college basketball poll on Monday, receiving 40 of the 60 first-place votes from a national media panel after knocking off Davidson in its only game last week. That allowed the Boilermakers to hold the top spot for a second consecutive week. But after then-No. 2 Virginia lost to Houston, UConn leaped into second place and scooped up the remaining 20 first-place votes. The Huskies were unranked in the preseason. The rest of the top five were Houston, Kansas and Arizona. Marquette entered the poll at 23 and Arizona State at 25. NCAAWBKB – St. John’s cracks Top 25 for 1st time since 2015 St. John's is ranked in The Associated Press women's basketball poll for the first time since 2015. The Red Storm is No. 25 after winning its first 11 games to match a school record. South Carolina remains a unanimous No. 1, receiving all 28 first-place votes from a national media panel. The top five was unchanged with Stanford, Ohio State, Indiana and Notre Dame following the Gamecocks. North Carolina and North Carolina State are sixth and seventh. The announcement Monday comes nearly two weeks after the sides agreed to the deal. The Cubs also have added All-Star shortstop Dansby Swanson and 2019 NL MVP Cody Bellinger this offseason. The 31-year-old Taillon is coming off a solid season with the New York Yankees, going 14-5 with a 3.91 ERA. He matched his career high with 32 starts and worked 177 1/3 innings, his best total since he logged 191 innings in 2018. The move puts Taillon back in the NL Central after he began his career with Pittsburgh. Taillon made his major league debut in 2016 and went 29-24 with a 3.67 ERA in 82 starts in his first four seasons with the Pirates. MLB – Tom Browning, pitched perfect game for Reds, dies at 62 Tom Browning, an All-Star pitcher who threw the only perfect game in Cincinnati Reds history and helped them win the 1990 World Series title, has died. He was 62. The Boone County Sheriff's Office announced Browning's death on Twitter, saying he died Monday at his home in Union, Kentucky. No cause was given. The Sheriff's Office said foul play is not suspected. The Reds issued a statement mourning Browning after being in contact with a member of his family, team spokesman Rob Butcher said. It was Larson’s third win of the season. NCAAFB – College Football – Week 8 Saturday Bowling Green 34, Central Michigan 18 Eastern Michigan 20, Ball State 16 Notre Dame 44, UNLV 21 Western Michigan 16, Miami (Ohio) 10 Michigan, Michigan State were off NCAAFB – AP Top 25: LSU re-enters at No. 18 ahead of visit from ‘Bama LSU re-entered The Associated Press College Football poll at No. 18 and No. 25 South Carolina earned a ranking for the first time in four seasons. The first six teams in the AP Top 25 held their spots after either winning and not playing this past weekend. Georgia is No. 1 for the third straight week, with No. 2 Ohio State gaining ground after it romped over Iowa. The Bulldogs, who were idle, received 31 first-place votes and 1,530 points. The Buckeyes got 18 first-place votes and 1,513 points. No. 3 Tennessee received 13 first-place votes. No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Clemson and No. 6 Alabama also held their spots. NASCAR – Larson wins at Homestead, holding off Chastain at end Kyle Larson found his way into NASCAR’s headlines for yet another week. This time, for a much more pleasant reason. Larson held off Ross Chastain to cap a dominant showing in the second-to-last race of the NASCAR season at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday, after leading 199 of the 267 laps over the 1-1/2 mile course. It was Larson’s third win of the season. And it came a week after the reigning Cup champion — who was eliminated earlier in this year’s playoffs — was intentionally spun by Bubba Wallace in an act of retaliation at Las Vegas. NFL – National Football League – Week 7 Last Night Arizona Cardinals 42, New Orleans Saints 34 Cardinals 42, Saints 34 – Cardinals use two pick-6s in first half to down Saints 42-34 Marco Wilson and Isaiah Simmons scored touchdowns on two pick-6s late in the first half and used that stunning change in momentum to lift the Arizona Cardinals over the New Orleans Saints 42-34. The Cardinals snapped an eight-game home losing streak that was the franchise’s longest since 1958. The game was tied at 14 when Saints quarterback Andy Dalton threw the game-changing interceptions on consecutive drives that were barely a minute apart just before halftime. Sunday Detroit Lions at Dallas Cowboys, 1:00 p.m.  Rock 107 WIRX 12:00 Indianapolis Colts at Tennessee Titans, 1:00 p.m. Monday Chicago Bears at New England Patriots, 8:15 p.m. NFL – Cowboys QB Prescott says injury absence ending against Lions Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott says he will start Sunday at home against the Detroit Lions. Prescott’s return would end a five-game absence after he fractured his right thumb in a season-opening loss to Tampa Bay. Dallas went 4-1 with backup Cooper Rush, starting with a four-game winning streak. Prescott says he had a full workload as the first-team QB in practice. Dallas players are crediting Rush for keeping the club in contention. They also see Prescott as the “life source” of the team’s offense. NFL – 49ers acquire RB Christian McCaffrey from Panthers The San Francisco 49ers have acquired star running back Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers for a haul of draft picks. The Panthers announced the deal that sends McCaffrey back to the Bay Area where he starred in college at Stanford in Thursday night. They said it will be finalized when McCaffrey passes a physical. A person familiar with the deal said on condition of anonymity that the Panthers will receive picks in the second, third and fourth rounds of the 2023 draft, as well as a fifth-rounder in 2024. MLB – Major League Baseball Playoffs – League Championship Series (best of 7) Yesterday Houston Astros 3, New York Yankees 2                                            (HOU leads 2-0) Astros 3, Yankees 2 – Bregman HR as Valdez, Astros edge Yankees 3-2, lead ALCS 2-0 Alex Bregman hit an early three-run homer, Framber Valdez pitched seven strong innings and the Houston Astros edged the New York Yankees 3-2 to take a 2-0 lead in the AL Championship Series. Yankees slugger Aaron Judge just missed a two-run homer in the eighth when his drive was caught just in front of the short wall by right fielder Kyle Tucker. The ball would’ve landed in the short right-field porch at Yankee Stadium, Statcast showed — with the roof open at Minute Maid Park, the wind might’ve knocked down Judge’s bid. The Astros improved to 5-0 this postseason. A night after Justin Verlander fanned 11 to begin the best-of-seven series, Bregman’s third-inning homer was all the offense Houston needed. The Astros improved to 5-0 this postseason. Tonight San Diego (Musgrove 10-7) at Philadelphia (Suarez 10-7), 7:37 p.m.      (Series tied 1-1) NBA – National Basketball Association Tonight Chicago Bulls at Washington Wizards, 7:00 p.m. San Antonio Spurs at Indiana Pacers, 7:00 p.m. Detroit Pistons at New York Knicks, 7:30 p.m. NBA – AP source: Pistons’ Rob Murphy on leave due to investigation A person familiar with the situation said Detroit Pistons assistant general manager Rob Murphy was put on leave due to an investigation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday night on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing. ESPN reported that Murphy is facing an allegation of workplace misconduct involving a former female employee. Murphy was promoted to assistant general manager in June after serving as president and general manager of the G League’s Motor City Cruise. The former Syracuse and Kent State assistant was Eastern Michigan’s basketball coach from 2011 to 2021. NHL – National Hockey League Tonight Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks, 8:30 p.m. NCAAFB – College Football – Week 8 Saturday Bowling Green at Central Michigan, 1:00 p.m. Eastern Michigan at Ball State, 2:00 p.m. UNLV at Notre Dame, 2:30 p.m. Western Michigan at Miami (Ohio), 3:30 p.m. Michigan, Michigan State are off this weekend NCAAFB – CFP expansion ‘not finished,’ still working toward 12 in ’24 The third in-person meeting of conference commissioners who manage the College Football Playoff since August ended without a resolution on expansion, but not without optimism. The CFP management committee, comprised of 10 major college football conference commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director, met for six hours. They worked on a plan to triple the number of playoff teams from four to 12 for the 2024 season. Playoff Executive Director Bill Hancock says the work is ‘not finished’ and that time is running short. NCAAFB – Concussion lawsuit against NCAA could be first to reach jury A Los Angeles jury could be the first in the U.S. to decide whether the NCAA failed to protect college football players from repeated blows to the head that cause serious brain injuries. A jury was seated Thursday in a Los Angeles courtroom in the case of a former University of Southern California linebacker who had significant brain damage when he died at age 49. The widow of Matt Gee, who was on the 1990 Rose Bowl winning squad, is suing the NCAA for wrongful death. The NCAA says it had nothing to do with Gee’s death and his mental decline was from years of hard drinking. Hundreds of similar cases are pending against the NCAA. NCAAVB – Wisconsin female athletes notify police over private photos University of Wisconsin police are investigating how private photos and video of members of the school’s national champion women’s volleyball team got circulated publicly without their consent. Wisconsin’s athletic department says players contacted campus police after they became aware the photos had been made public. The volleyball players aren’t being investigated for wrongdoing. University of Wisconsin police spokesman Marc Lovicott confirmed the investigation, but details are not being disclosed. Olympics – Olympic officials talk with 10 bidders for 2036 Summer Games The International Olympic Committee says it’s in talks with 10 potential candidates to host a future Summer Games. Interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics has been expressed by officials in countries including Egypt, England, India, Indonesia and Qatar. IOC director general Christophe de Kepper did not identify any of the 10 projects addressing the Association of National Olympic Committees meeting in Seoul, South Korea. The 2036 Olympics is the next Summer Games available to be awarded in a mostly secretive process led by the IOC. It seeks to avoid both expensive public campaigning and a vote contested by multiple candidates.
