I don't know how many times I have now attended, but during my first visit, I was walking the halls hoping to speak to publishers about my blog and praying that I might get a review copy or two. I attended for a single day, driving up all the way and back again by myself, trying to cram it all on. That's all changed over the years. So let me tell you my plans for UK Games Expo 2025.Read the full topic discussion article here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/05/20/uk-games-expo-2025-looking-ahead-saturday-review/Useful LinksUK Games Expo: https://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk/Amosdee UK: https://www.asmodee.co.uk/£1,000 Giveaway: https://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk/whats-on/show/1000-giveaway/Asmodee UK Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/AsmodeeUKAtikin Games: https://atikingames.com/Malus Hortus review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/04/05/malus-hortus-saturday-review/Stuff by Bez: https://www.stuffbybez.com/Dissent Game: https://dissentgames.com/Naylor Games: https://naylorgames.com/Unfringed: https://unfringed.co/Oink Games: https://oinkgames.com/en/Dranda Games: https://www.drandagames.co.uk/Osprey Games: https://www.ospreypublishing.com/uk/osprey-games/Ofrenda review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/05/10/ofrenda-saturday-review/Red Raven Games: https://www.redravengames.com/Hachette Boardgames UK: https://www.hachetteboardgames.co.uk/Paper Forg Games: https://www.paperfortgames.com/Play With Us Design (PWUD): https://pwud.ga/Playte: https://www.playte.com/Pueblo review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/03/22/pueblo-saturday-review/Ravensburger: https://www.ravensburger.co.uk/en-GBKosmos: https://www.thamesandkosmos.co.uk/MusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Music: "oct 8 2021" provided by mobygratis.SupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/

Meanwhile, Banana has fallen for Ryan Laukat as she tries to save the pack-turtle in her first experience with Red Raven Games in Creature Caravan. The land of Arzium is facing a new threat. Ember Zombies have left their volcanic lands to the north and are walking through the previously peaceful lands that we call our home. You can easily recognise them with their charcoal bodies. Yet, there is hope. The city of Eastrey offers a safe haven for the creatures that are threatened by the malicious fire fairies. Everyone must make their way across deserts and plains, over mountains and through deep canyons and seek refuge, picking up other wandering creatures along the way, to join their Creature Caravan by Ryan Laukat from Red Raven Games with illustrations from Ryan Laukat. Based on a suggestion from the wonderful Bez from Stuff by Bez, I want to look at how designers can sometimes be known for specific styles of board games. That can be useful for people looking for certain types of games, but it also means that the designers can end up being pigeonholed, which can have a negative impact on their professional future in our hobby. Enjoy the works of Thomas Lehmann while you can! Despite the lack of player interaction of Dice Realms, Mr. Lehmann has violated local, provincial, and federal law by not supplying a solo mode. International treaty has also been flouted by the absence of a campaign. I fear he may be put in boardgame jail as a consequence. Can he build a tableau convincing enough as his defence? 00:00 - Nap strats and sleep hacks. 06:48 - With Unpacking from Witch Beam Games there's, well, a lot to unpack. What's truly brilliant here is the way the storytelling fully integrates with the gameplay, without feeling clunky, and explores a life experience in a delicate way, without being cloying. 21:06 - Above? Below? Why not have both? Ryan Laukat and Red Raven Games have made a truly lovely and pleasantly light Euro game with Above and Below, merging worker placement with a choose-your-own-adventure-like narrative element. 34:28 - We're big fans of the work of Big Potato Games and Snakesss is no exception. Phil Walker-Harding's latest is a blend of social deduction and trivia and it works brilliantly - just ask the Mongoose of Truth. 43:54 - We also got a chance to play Big Potato TV, which is currently in beta. It's great value, even in its work-in-progress state, and an easy way to get more games on the go during family gatherings, even for those people that might typically shy away from them. 46:38 - We've been exploring classic movies and rediscovering the joy of just browsing through the Radio Times for cool stuff to watch that you might not normally think of. Plus a chat about how one director aims to help save the cinema experience. All that, and the number one rule, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). A cheeky l'il Spotify Playlist is over on Spotify (obviously), which gathers together lots of great thematic music inspired by the stuff we talk about. Links to where you can find us - StayingInPodcast.com Note: sometimes we'll have been sent a review copy of the thing we're talking about on the podcast. It doesn't skew how we think about that thing, and we don't receive compensation for anything we discuss, but we thought you might like to know this is the case.

All right, we need to talk about Sokka. Another staple of kid's shows is often The Annoying One. I don't know why, but they're often there. Steven Universe had Ronaldo, but they knew to use him sparingly. Sokka is so aggressively obnoxious in the first two episodes it is a miracle anyone makes it to episode three. He could have just been the complainer, but additionally his monumental and gratuitous misogyny is so bad that one wonders what Suki (an awesome character) ever saw in him. Sure, he gets better, but always in my mind the Early Days Sokka looms over the show like some terrible shadow.00:59 AYURIS: On Mars (Vital Lacerda, Eagle-Gryphon Games, 2020)Games Played Last Week:02:33 -Cryo (Tom Jolly & Luke Laurie, Z-Man Games, 2021)07:22 -Red Outpost (Raman Hryoryk, Lifestyle Boargames Ltd, 2019)11:38 -Cantaloop: Book 1--Breaking into Prison (Friendemann Findeisen & Grzegorz Kobiela, Lookout Games, 2020)15:36 -Brass: Birmingham (Gavan Brown, Matt Tolman, & Martin Wallace, Roxley, 2018)19:14 -Clever Cubed (Wolfgang Warsch, Schmidt Spiele, 2020)21:09 -Sleeping Gods (Ryan Laukat, Red Raven Games, 2021)23:38 -PARKS (Henry Audubon, Keymaster Games, 2019)27:16 -Shards of Infinity: Into the Horizon (Gary Arant, Justin Gary, Ryan Sutherland, Jared Saramago, Mataio Wilson, & Jason Zila, Stone Blade Entertainment, 2021)29:19 -Pickomino Deluxe (Reiner Knizia, Zoch Verlag, 2018)31:53 -Witchstone (Martino Chiacchiera & Reiner Knizia, R&R Games, 2021)34:48 -Empire of the Stars (Adam West, CrossCut Games, 2021)40:15 -The Grimm Masquerade (Tim Eisner, Ben Eisner, & James Hudson, Druid City Games, 2019)News (and why it doesn't matter):45:53 Fundraiser on Twitch for Food Banks Canada on October 2nd at 3 PM EST.Guests: No Pun Included, Board Game Barrage, the SVWAG crew! Absence, as they say, makes the heart grow fonder, which I believe was an aphorism coined about a gamer's relationship with their prized game collection. Mark finds himself separated against his will from his many many boxes, which makes Walker's occasional reminders of games he left behind all the more painful. Fortunately, Mark has his stable of insect rikishi to keep him company.01:18 AYURIS: Last Bastion (Antoine Bauza, Repos Production, 2019)Games Played Last Week:03:19 -Spire's End (Greg Favro, Self-Published, 2019)05:41 -Regicide (Paul Abrahams, Luke Badger, & Andy Richdale, Badgers from Mars, 2020)05:55 -Race for the Galaxy (Thomas Lehmann, Rio Grande Games, 2007)06:00 -Imperium: Classics and Imperium: Legends (Nigel Buckle & Dávid Turczi, Osprey Games, 2021)07:33 -Orleans (Reiner Stockhausen, dlp Games, 2014)09:30 -The Quacks of Quedlinburg (Wolfgang Warsch, Scmidt Spiele, 2018)11:36 -Sleeping Gods (Ryan Laukat, Red Raven Games, 2021)17:08 -Pan Am (Prospero Hall, Funko Games, 2020)21:24 -Imperium: The Contention (Gary Dworetsky, Contention Games, 2021)22:00 -Wingspan (Elizabeth Hargrave, Stonemaier Games, 2019)23:11 -Destinies (Michał Gołębiowski & Filip Miłuński, Lucky Duck Games, 2021)27:02 -Mind MGMT: The Psychic Espionage "Game." In this episode we look at Above and Below from Red Raven Games. This game is for 2-4 people and has a focus on storytelling and narrative.
Erica and Scott welcome Ryan and Malorie Laukat, the couple behind Red Raven Games. Ryan is known as the designer and illustrator for games like Eight Minute Empire, Above and Below, Near and Far, Islebound, Empires of the Void, Artifacts Inc., Megaland, and the forthcoming Now or Never. They are also the subject of an upcoming documentary, Crafting Arzium. Ryan is often seen as the sole force behind Red Raven Games, but Malorie and the whole Laukat family do a lot of work behind the scenes. We talk about the challenges and opportunities of making games as a family, how to maintain a work/life balance, and how to get your kids to playtest your latest game. SHOW NOTES 27m32s: Tales of the Arabian Nights 38m59s: We discussed the different markets you can sell your game in on Ludology 246 - Cornering the Market. 51m14s: You can hear the Laukats' original music in their Sleeping Gods Kickstarter trailer. 1h07m24s: Here's the Red Raven website, their Twitter, their Facebook, and their Instagram.

We had been transported to another world, another time maybe. The stars were all wrong, not matching any of the charts we had on board our ship, the Manticore. Captain Sofi Odessa decided we should make landfall and spotted a natural harbour nearby. As we got closer, we saw an old woman waving to us from the shore. It seemed like she had been expecting us. Once we had dropped anchor, we went to the starboard side to speak to the woman and find out what she wanted. She was clearly excited to see us and immediately told us that we were here to wake the Sleeping Gods by Red Raven Games.Read the full article here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2021/03/27/sleeping-gods-saturday-review/LinksSleeping Gods: https://redravengames.squarespace.com/sleeping-godsRed Raven Games: https://redravengames.squarespace.com/BGG listing: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/255984/sleeping-godsNear and Far: Amber Mines review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2019/09/21/near-and-far-amber-mines-saturday-review/Intro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Music: Acoustic Breeze by Bensound (https://www.bensound.com)
Bill and Dylan take a closer look at the popular new story-and-exploration game from Red Raven Games, Sleeping Gods.
Today we discuss Sleeping Gods by Red Raven Games, a game that combines campaign, rich narrative, worker placement, tableau building and action efficiency! In Sleeping Gods, you and up to 3 players become Captain Sofi Odessa and her crew, lost in a strange world in 1929 on your steamship, the Manticore. You must work together to survive, exploring exotic islands, meeting new characters, and seeking out the totems of the gods so that you can return home. The goal is to find at least fourteen totems hidden throughout the world. Like reading a book, you'll complete this journey one or two hours at a time, discovering new lands, stories, and challenges along the way. Each new location holds wild adventure, hidden treasures, and vivid characters. Your choices affect the characters and the plot of the game, and may help or hinder your chances of getting home! The four armies have landed on the beach of the abandoned island and deposited their troops with intent. They are here to claim their stake and become the new rulers. Yet, battles are rare. The invaders mostly compete for majority, tolerating their opponents' presence, while brave cohorts cross the seas to reach neighbouring islands in this tiny archipelago. Cities are built to establish a permanent presence, but it doesn't take long until it is all over. In Eight-Minute Empire: Legends by Red Raven Games, you and up to three other players try to manoeuvre your armies over eight to eleven rounds to come out victorious. Here is another beautifully illustrated game by Ryan Laukat. You will immediately recognize it from his other games, such as Near and Far. You will also recognize a lot of the characters he created in his other games and which appear in Roam as well. Yet, this game from Red Raven Games is quite different from the others. There is no resource management, no movement and no storytelling. Instead, you get a lovely, light game that is very easy to explain and learn and relatively quick to play. My name is Bruce Brown and what we seek to do here on board game impact is to tell you about the experiences that were having in this mazing hobbies that way, you can make informed decisions for yourself and for your gaming group. And how we do that is we apply our, some of our educational backgrounds at looking into this, and I say we because there's a co host and his name is I'm Josh Isringhausen co host and together both of us are sharing our experiences that we're having in this wonderful hobby and Josh with that. How about we just jump right in and tell this nerves about some of what we've been playing lately? What's something for you? Sure. So the first thing I wanted to bring out today is a game. I'd actually been trying to get to get my hands on for a while now probably since BG con last November. And that is Tayo t-, what con- city of. Gods? So this is designed by Daniel skinny believe is the way his last name's for nounce them. Forgive me if I'm wrong published by NS Kate in games. Teotihuacan is a a. Really interesting hasn't really interesting mechanics to the, the core. Concept of the game is you are building the. Here amid that is at the center of Teotihuacan Teotihuacan is. A city from the Mayan culture in Mexico or not Mexico gonna draw blank on where that cities, located I got home keep gone. It is a. Pyramid that you are building on the tape are on the board with these almost like Mahjong tiles. There's some really interesting ways in which you're placing than this disgorge you points based on some, some character designs that are on top of them as you build upwards to this pyramid. And in order to do that, you are taking your workers which are dice and moving them around the board collecting resources and researching new technologies and. Building some decorations all different ways in which you're ultimately scoring points. The thing that really intrigues me about this game is the way in which your workers are placed on all your all of your workers or on the board at the start of the game. And as you move them around the board, you will actually age them starting at a one, and then moving to a two three four five and then ultimately allowing them to ascend to the heavens, as they become elderly and old, and then come back to bring you some positive points or rewards, a few age them out. So there's some really, really interesting choices and ways in which to play a game I had a blast with this one. This is the spiritual successor to Zolkin, which is. By the same designer his initial game. Also, based in that mindset, lose -ation, right? And so just really quick Teotihuacan. The real thing is a vast mic Mexican as you were right...

Welcome back to another episode of Chasing Geek with Knight of Oa (Matt) and Pint Size Ginger (Selina). The breaking news for this week is that the break last week was due to Matt moving but he is all settled now and soon will have his new office up and running! Selina's news is way less lifechanging but still exciting. Plaidhat has announced that Oni Press will be publishing a Dead of Winter comic featuring the adorable stunt dog Sparky! This week our main discussion is about board games and apps. It like seems apps are thoroughly saturating the industry and they are almost impossible to get away from. Every where you turn there is a new game turned into a mobile game, a companion app to go along with the board game, or a game that bases its gameplay on an app. Some of the ones we disscuss are... Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, Ascension, Pathfinder the Adventure Card Game, Castles of Mad King Ludwig, One Night Ultimate werewolf, Dead of Winter, Race to the North Pole, Fuse, Alchemists: Lab Equipment, and Golem Arcana. Just to name a few. We also mention TableTop Simulator on steam and “Worlds first Board Game Console” PlayTable. The article we talk about is Fairway Thoughts: Why I'm So Over Digital Board Games. We also talk about our homework for the week which was Rat Queens vol 1: Sass and Sorcery ! We could have talked about it for the whole podcast. Matt's homework for next week is to listen to at least one episode of The Adventure Zone podcast on Maximumfun and finally watch Moana. Selina's will be to listen to the Wii U-logy episode from the Gameinformer podcast. The quick shout out for the week is Red Raven Games' podcast. As always you can find Pint Size Ginger on Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Twitch as well as on the Playstation Network! You can find Knight's articles (Matt Mueller) on ComicBook.com, and you can reach him on Twitter and PSN! As for Chasing Geek, you can follw us on Tumblr, Twitter, or Facebook!
