April shah-ers bring May flah-ers, and April 1st brings a new episode of Good, but not the best... a Dancing Gnome podcast. You know the drill at this point. At the top of the episode we read a new review before we take a Look Back and Look Ahead where Andrew tells us about a signage update in the taproom, the "Experimental Pilsner" releases and more. Then, we are joined by our guest, Alan Wildy of Allagash Brewing. Alan talks about bringing Allagash to the Pittsburgh market right as COVID hit, the popularity of Allagash White (a perfect beer?), some upcoming releases and much more. Alan sticks around for a lengthy round of Watch, Listen, Learn, during which we veer into Alan talking about growing up in Belfast before moving to the US in the early 90s. Thanks for listening!

Allagash Brewing will celebrate its 30th anniversary this summer, and founder Rob Tod knows where he'll be and what he'll be drinking on the brewery's birthday, July 1 – an Allagash White at the Great Lost Bear, the taphouse that served the first pint of White in Portland, Maine.   “I remember it like it was yesterday. That was our very first draftline,” Tod tells Brewbound managing editor Jess Infante on the latest episode of the Brewbound Podcast. “I shipped eight kegs of Allagash White to Nappi Distributors on June 29, and July 1 I worked at the brewery all day and my plan was to head down to the Bear where I knew it was going on tap at 5 o'clock, and just hang out for a few hours and having a bunch of beers.   “I thought, my work's going to be done. I've spent a year building the brewery. I've written this recipe, I've brewed the beer. I'm kind of all done,” he continued.   Tod had a pint with the Bear's owners and was happy with it. He had a second pint and a realization hit him: “I've got to get back to work.”   “I got in my car and I drove right back to the brewery and kept working on whatever I was working on at the time just continuing to build and piece the brewery together,” Tod said. “I've always felt like the work isn't done.”   In the conversation, Tod Tod discusses growing Allagash into the 15th largest Brewers Association-defined craft brewery by volume. He also explains what Allagash is looking for in distributor partners, how much capacity his brewery has left for expansion and why the brewery pulled back in the early 2000s.   “We've really optimized how we can support a market, whether it's a really close local market like Boston or Minnesota, Colorado or even Los Angeles,” Tod explained. “We really do feel like we've got a strong, competitive go-to-market plan and that we can do a really solid, optimized job supporting our distributor partners.”   Tod taps into Allagash's innovation approach that checks the boxes of “balanced, drinkability, complexity and authenticity” and how the launches of a lager, hazy IPA and variety pack feed into those pillars.    Plus, the Brewbound team recaps the latest headlines and plays Another Round or Tabbing Out on Minute Maid Spiked's foray into lemonade, pink and otherwise.

From Maine, With Love - An Allagash Brewing Podcast

It's our 30th Anniversary as a brewery and our 4th Anniversary as a podcast. So we're celebrating both with Allagash Founder Rob Tod, and Allagash Brewmaster Jason Perkins. That's right! It has been 30 years since Rob started Allagash Brewing Company in the corner of a warehouse on Industrial Way. And we're taking a refurbished Vermont Gas Company van-ride down memory lane to talk about the origins of Allagash White, the early days of the brewery, long hours, hard work, and fun that was had. So crack an Allagash White (we did) and enjoy this exploration of the origins of Allagash Brewing Company.

This week… it's just Max and Kärel in the Stu and it felt like an old school episode full of tangents, burps, rants, laughs and of course da Pack! They called Andy O. to break down all things sports. College football playoffs, Bucks, Badgers and Packers. They filled out separate college football brackets. They discussed the recent success of the Pack and made predictions for Monday's battle with the Saints. They predicted scores, stats, and what lady eyebrows Lafleur will be wearing! Then things got off the rails. Challenge talk turned into philosophizing about life, which turned into death talk… These guys really know how to give the audience what they want! Horse Thief Hollow Brewing Co's Jake Nelson (Head Brewer) and Adrian Morrison (Brewer and Sales Manager) discuss the fascinating legacy of Horse Thief Hollow Brewing in Chicago's historic Beverly neighborhood, exploring the origins of the brewery's name, its cultural significance, and why the Illinois militia had to run off horse thieves in the very early days of Chicago. They also share their humble beer origin stories, including Andrian's rising through the ranks in order to get to where he is at Horse Thief Hollow. They also talk about what “cellar work” actually means when working in beer before they discuss how Horse Thief Hollow Brewing Co. has become the most award-winning brewery on Chicago's south side, including a deep dive into how they overcame the challenge of brewing high-quality Pilsners consistently in order to come up with their award-winning Little Wing Pilsner.  After the beer break, they discuss Annexation, a West Coast IPA, including an explanation of what makes an IPA a West Coast IPA specifically and why West Coast IPAs are making a comeback. Jake also talks about when a beer is “done” and he doesn't feel like he needs to keep changing a recipe. What's the difference between tasting wine and beer when you want to identify specific aromas and flavours? What are some of the similarities and differences between a Cicerone or beer sommelier and a wine sommelier? How do retronasal aromas give you a different, deeper sense of the aromas of both beer and wine? In this Unreserved Wine Talk podcast episode, I'm chatting with author Mandy Naglich. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Giveaway Two of you are going to win a personally signed copy of Mandy's new book, How to Taste: A Guide to Discovering Flavor and Savoring Life. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose two people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck!   Highlights What are some of the similarities and differences between a Cicerone and a sommelier? What was it like to win a national homebrew competition? How did Mandy become interested in homebrewing? Should your sense of smell be tested as part of your annual physical? What does Mandy love about Pommery Pop Champagne? Why should you consider using a Champagne tulip glass instead of a flute? How does Allagash White bring together the beer and wine worlds? What causes beer to hold its head longer compared to other beverages? How does beer's head affect the tasting experience? What's Mandy's seven-step method for tasting beer? When should you cover your glass before swirling? How can you best utilize your retronasal smell pathway? What types of food would pair well with Allagash White versus Pommery Pop Champagne? How can a food pairing create a whole new flavour sensation? Why does speaking aloud help you to solidify your tasting knowledge? How can you challenge your perceptions of your taste? What's Mandy's favourite wine gadget? Why would Mandy love to share a bottle of wine with Oprah? What message would Mandy share with the world on a billboard in downtown Manhattan?   Key Takeaways I was fascinated with Mandy's explanation and demonstration of the differences between tasting wine and beer. I had assumed the process would be the same and was surprised to find that it's not. I also found her explanation of the similarities and differences between a Cicerone and a sommelier helpful. I didn't realize that the world of beer is so diverse (yes, my little wine-snob eyes have been opened) or that Cicerones are more involved in maintaining complex equipment than sommeliers. I fully support her focus on how retronasal aromas reintroduce you to the richer, deeper aromas of both beer and wine and enable you to discover something new when you're playing it backward as she says. I also agree about using a tulip glass rather than a traditional champagne flute to better swirl and smell the wine.   Join me on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube Live Join the live-stream video of this conversation on Wed at 7 pm ET on Instagram Live Video, Facebook Live Video or YouTube Live Video. If you're a voracious fiction reader like I am, your biggest impression of Maine may come from Stephen King novels. But the United States' northeasternmost state is far more than pet cemeteries and telekinetic prom queens. It's also home to some of the country's highest-quality grain growers and maltsters, many of whom are based in an area that's long been used for another crop: potatoes. In her piece titled “Making It to a Million — How Allagash Helped Grow Maine's Grain Economy,” writer Catie Joyce-Bulay dives into this world of farm-to-pint malting and how Allagash Brewing Company's pledge to use 1 million pounds of grains grown and malted in Maine by the end of this year has helped spur new infrastructure and symbiotic relationships throughout the local industry. As a resident Mainer, she explores the importance of that hyper-localism pervasive among her tight-knit brewing community, and how mutual respect and a shared commitment to quality binds those tilling the earth to those brewing our beer. During this conversation, Catie discusses what it's like to live, work, and drink in Maine, a place that fiercely protects its own, but embraces those who share their sense of rugged individuality. We talk about how the slow growth towards using solely Maine-grown grain is a welcome corrective to our current culture of instant gratification, what she wishes she could have expanded on in her piece, how using GPS in rural Maine may lead you to some unexpected places (and snacks), and what to pair a can of Allagash White with. (Hint: it's everything.)

Noah and Matty do their best to quiet their nerves and make the most out of their time shared with greatness. Topics include, but are not limited to: Noah's most formative memories of Allagash; the steady and subdued Fight for White in Jason's early days at the brewery; the grist breakdown of the best wheat beer in America (besides Blue Moon); how Allagash's love affair with Brettanomyces began by accident via an old dairy tank; defining what it means to get "screwed by the 'Lude"; Jason's biggest takeaways from 13 years of producing authentic spontaneous beer; experiences with beers that have gotten "down with the sickness"; and how Allagash has grown its culture along side its production in such an unparalleled way. Craft Brew News 07/10/20(Courtesy of Brewbound.com)Allagash Founder Rob Tod Recovers From COVID-19In an interview with a Maine NBC affiliate, Allagash founder Rob Tod revealed that he tested positive for COVID-19 in mid-March after returning from a ski vacation.Tod told the affiliate that he self-quarantined and “rode it out” at home, not wanting to infect any other Allagashians.Even with the diagnosis, Tod said he was “so consumed and immersed in running this company at a time when we had lost 70% of our business the day that I came down with the COVID.”With March and the coronavirus, practically overnight people stopped going to bars and restaurants, where most of Allagash’s sales occurred. In less than a month sales tanked by seventy percent. Since losing 70% of its business, Allagash has since refocused on building its off-premise business. The company in June shared plans to launch several years’ worth of innovations in the fall, including a line of sparkling session ales made with fruit called Little Grove by Allagash, a new stout called North Sky and 6-pack bottles of flagship Allagash White.California Governor Orders Shutdown of Breweries and Restaurants in 19 CountiesWith a growing number of new COVID-19 cases in California, Gov. Gavin Newsom has expanded the state’s temporary shutdown of bars and breweries to include a ban on indoor and outdoor dining and drinking in 19 counties, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. However, restaurants will be allowed to continue operating outdoor patio spaces, as well as breweries that operate licensed food service or partner with neighboring restaurants or food trucks.Counties included in the order include Los Angeles, Orange, Sacramento, Santa Barbara, and Ventura. Majority of counties account for nearly 75% of the state’s population. All 19 are on the state Department of Public Health’s “monitoring list” for areas with an increasing number of novel coronavirus cases and hospitalizations.Dichello Distributors Files Lawsuit Against Anheuser-Busch Alleging Conspiracy to Force SaleAn Anheuser-Busch wholesaler in Connecticut is suing the world’s largest beer manufacturer alleging that the maker of Bud Light conspired with a now former employee to damage the business and force a sale of the distributorship.New Haven, Connecticut-based Dichello Distributors is suing Anheuser-Busch, claiming A-B “engaged in an ongoing conspiracy” with Sal DiBetta, a former employee who later worked as CEO of the wholesaler between 2013 and 2016, as well as “other unnamed parties,” to “undermine” Dichello and force president John Hall’s family to sell the business to A-B, according to a complaint filed on June 17 in the Connecticut Superior Court.Dichello also alleges A-B has tried to enforce an equity agreement on the wholesaler and threatened them “with consequences for non-compliance, including forced sale of the distributorship.”A-B has not responded to a request for comment.DiBetta worked for A-B for more than 30 years before joining Dichello in October 2013 and departing in 2016, according to his Linkedin profile.Anheuser-Busch to Pay Record $5 Million Offer In Compromise for Trade Practice Violations Tied to Sports and Entertainment SponsorshipsAnheuser-Busch InBev has agreed to pay a record $5 million offer in compromise (OIC) for alleged trade practice violations related to sports and entertainment sponsorships, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) announced today.Additionally, A-B’s importer and wholesaler permits were suspended for two days in Littleton, Colorado, and four days in Denver. The $5 million fine is the largest offer in compromise collected to date by the TTB, Thomas Hogue, a spokesperson for the federal agency, confirmed with Brewbound. Blood and Black Rum Podcast - A Cult Film / Horror Podcast

Going in with few expectations and no viewings of the spoilerific trailer, we found Pet Sematary to be an okay film that doesn't match the spookiness and cheese of the original. It's also not that offensive, which mostly translates to: it really has nothing new to say despite some of its plot flips and a changed finale. We found the acting to be fair besides John Lithgow, the scares occasionally effective, and the overall theme very muddled. Allagash, a wonderful brewery in Portland, Maine founded in 1995 by Rob Tod. Matt Pollard is responsible for Allagash Field Sales for DC and Maryland and comes by to chat all things Allagash: new beer releases, Allagash White in a can (!), visiting the brewery, and the culture of the brewery. We do an accidental advertisement for visiting Portland, Maine and go off topic with DC beer events, but that's to be expected.

Salutations, everybody! This week, Ryan and Alex try the delightful Allagash White by Allagash Brewing Company. Allagash was started in Portland, Maine, in 1995 as a small, one man brewing company by founder Rob Todd. Todd was familiar with the brewing scene, and realized there was a gap that needed to be filled in the craft brewing scene - while there were plenty of German and British style brews, the beer world was missing real craft Belgian style beers. Rob Todd decided he was just the man to fill that gap and began brewing the first batch of Allagash White, releasing it for distribution in 1995. Since then, Allagash Brewing Co. has grown to become the face of Belgian style beers in the US. Allagash White has tastes of coriander and Curacao Orange Peel, along with the traditional spices you’d expect to taste in a Belgian White. We’ll also be calling the very talented makeup artist, Paulie Jutras, who’s worked in film, theater, and was recently a finalist in the NYX Face Awards. He’s currently blowing up on Instagram, having perfected the looks of The Mad Hatter, Ursula from The Little Mermaid, and Scar from the Lion King, just to name a few. This week on FDB - we discover some interesting craft beer names, learn of the slowest car chase to ever grace the news, discuss secondary means of relaxation, and more! Now please kick back, and enjoy another sit down with Friends Drink Beer. To support Allagash Brewing Company, and to find out more about their other beers, visit: www.allagash.com To learn about Paulie Jutras and his amazing works of makeup artistry, you can follow him on Instagram @paulie_sfx BEER EVENT OF THE WEEK EVENT: Septemberfest WHERE: Avery Park in Corvallis, Oregon WHEN: Saturday, September 15, 2018 WHAT: Being hosted at at Avery Park is the 11th annual Septembeerfest.
