Today on the show, we're talking Hiroya Oku's 37-volume manga Gantz, which ran from 2000-2013. Joining us is our favorite expat drag queen in Japan, author and airwave artist Zach Langley Chi-Chi of I'm So Popular. We dive into this libidinal freestyle epic and also dig into revisiting the artist's vault, and what we can learn from our past selves. This is a prime example of the craft talk we get into frequently behind the paywall, so we decided to make this entire episode free as an example of the sauce you get over on Agitator Z. This week we review Hiroya Oku's "Inuyashiki Last Hero". Going back 5 years to 2017, Studio Mappa did a fantastic job at adapting this overall "question of morality" series. We begin to follow the story of Inuyashiki, who is going through a rough patch in life, and his journey to becoming a "Hero" after he's suspiciously transformed into a robot after being hit by a magical bright light. We also follow the story of Hiro's transformation as well, what he decides to do with his newfound power, and what it is exactly that makes him feel "human". Tune in and see how we felt about some of the most controversial moments and the series overall. Also, remember that One Piece is crazy good and you should definitely be reading and watching!

Inuyashiki (いぬやしき) is a Japanese science fiction manga series written and illustrated by Hiroya Oku. It was serialized in Kodansha's seinen manga magazine Evening from January 2014 to July 2017, with its chapters compiled in ten tankōbon volumes. An anime television series adaptation produced by MAPPA aired on Fuji TV's late night programming block Noitamina from October to December 2017. A live-action film adaptation premiered in Japan in April 2018. Inuyashiki Ichiro is an older, friendless man with an uncaring family. One fateful evening in a nearly empty public park, he is struck by an explosion of extraterrestrial origin, and his body is replaced by an incredibly powerful, but still outwardly human, mechanical body. He quickly realizes the extent of his body's powers, and after saving a homeless man being beaten by a pack of teenagers, he decides to dedicate himself to doing good, using his powers to heal those with incurable diseases and fight crime. However, a teenager who was with him at the time of the explosion, Shishigami Hiro, had the same fate as Ichiro, but unlike Inuyashiki, Shishigami becomes a psychopath who goes about using his newfound abilities to murder various people, from classmates that annoy him to innocent families, including young children, just for amusement. His acts of merciless cruelty bring him the attention of the police, who can do nothing to stop him. Hiro becomes the most wanted criminal in the country. Inuyashiki by Hiroya Oku is a ten-volume manga series that we confidently recommend to anyone who enjoys a dark but also different take on superhero fiction. It's also an inspiring story about an average old man who wants to do some good. Briskly paced and full of the cinematic, "widescreen" traits we Westerners typically associate with influential superhero titles like The Authority, Inuyashiki is a Japanese take on a very American genre that's not a spin on the sentai stories that populate Japanese pop culture. Tune in to find out why we devoured this series in such a short period of time!

On this episode of Bakacast, we start off with a listener question that tasks us with deciding Netflix's anime production plans that prompts us to dig deep for both obvious and obscure choices. We also add Inuyashiki to our watch list, a show that has two very strong intro episodes but still gives us a little pause due to, you know, it being written by Hiroya Oku, the dude who also made the infamous Gantz. Meanwhile, Garo impresses, Whales disappoint, and Kino's Journey sparks a discussion about the value of different adaptation styles.

Even if rakugo was a dying art form, manga surely isn’t! The anime adaptation of Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu was critically acclaimed among anime connoisseurs in the west, so the Manga Mavericks take a look at the original manga, licensed and renamed Descending Stories by Kodansha USA. Can a manga capture the essence of rakugo as an auditory performance art in a soundless medium? Or is this another case of an anime adaptation transcending the limitations of its source material to transform a good story into a masterpiece? But first, news! Colton’s back from buying cigarettes at Anime St. Louis, and rejoins Sid in discussing the latest happenings in the world of manga. We feign enthusiasm for the return of Hunter X Hunter, speculate on the potential of a Hollywood-produced Saint Seiya live-action film, and salivate over Seven Seas’s latest tidal wave of manga licenses, including the likes of Devilman and Captian Harlock! Manga: Reviews of Inuyashiki and Wandering Island

For the August manga episode, Shea and Derek go topless...at least that's a common condition that they sense in the two titles that they discuss this month. They begin with Hiroya Oku's Inuyashiki, the fourth English-language volume of which was released in June by Kodansha Comics. It's the story of an older Sad Sack of a salaryman, Ichiro Inuyashiki, whose slowly crumbling life is turned around after contact with an alien life form. As a result of this encounter, his body is replaced with a weapon-grade robotic shell, and over the course the first four volumes, Inuyashiki learns to use his new condition to positively change the lives of others. However, complications arise when another man similarly changed by the same alien encounter decides to use his powers for more nihilist purposes. Shea and Derek spend much time discussing Oku's art -- a clean yet static style -- the borderline melodrama of the storytelling, and the fact that Inuyashiki goes around without a shirt much of the time. After that, the guys turn to their second title of the month, Kenji Tsuruta's Wandering Island (Dark Horse Manga). This is a quest narrative centered on the discovery of a mythical island in the Pacific that is free floating. The protagonist of this series, Mikura Amelia, owns a small delivery service and pilots a bi-floatplane along the Izu Islands. When she discovers the writings of her dead grandfather about the elusive Electric Island, Mikura sets off with her cat Endeavor to prove its existence. The guys appreciate the protagonist as a fully formed, complex adventuring character, but they disagree slightly about the ways in which Tsuruta represents her. Shea feels that the frequently bikinied Mikura is too often posed specifically for the male gaze, and while Derek agrees with his cohost, to a point, he's not entirely convinced that Mikura is sexualized for that purpose. Regardless, Wandering Island rests upon a fascinating premise that will have both of the guys coming back to the title for volume two...whenever that publication might be.

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Aliens walk among us. So says the franchise Gantz. Gantz, which started out as a Japanese manga (or graphic novel), back in the year 2000 by artist/writer Hiroya Oku, has since gone on to a two full seasons as an anime series and also two full live action films. In all cases, the three versions have become highly successful and critically well received. Jason Lloyd of Horrorphilia stated that Gantz is was one of the best genre films of year when it was released as two live action films. When an indigent person happens to fall off a subway platform, two older high school students, Kei Kurono and Masaru Kato, independently jump down to help him. Unfortunately minutes into the story, both die in the tragic accident. Yet each finds themselves soon after in an apartment looking out on the city of Tokyo unaware how they got there. With them are a group of other strangers from various walks of life and in the center of the room is a giant black metallic ball that will soon determine their final fate. Gantz happens to be both a science fiction story in the vane of both cyberpunk and techno-thriller subgenres with strong and graphic horror elements. Yet the largest critical reception of the franchise is the misanthropic arc the story takes while it leads to an eventual ambiguous deliverance. Though showy with its grindhouse and exploitation elements, the story of a handful of condemned individuals tells a lot more than its surface elements. Co-host Abe joins Phil for his very first appearance on Dark Discussions, now finally released as its own episode. Podcast Manga Review of Gantz Volume 1 by Hiroya Oku. Translated by Matthew Johnson. Originally published in Japan by Shueisha. Published in US by Dark Horse, $12.95, Rated Mature 18+. The highly violent, highly sexualized, and highly anticipated series is finally out from Dark Horse and it doesn't disappoint. Kei and Kato are saved from death in a subway accident only to find themselves trapped in a room with a group of people from all walks of life whisked away in a similar manner right before they died. They cannot leave and are commanded by a strange black globe to hunt down and kill an alien.  My Grade: A+
