Our Section F handpicked hosts and guests discuss their favourite spy movies both the classics and the hidden gems of spy films. Today Spybrary's Section F delve into the 1963 movie adaptation of Ian Fleming's From Russia With Love starring Sean Connery and directed by Terence Young. Host Shane Whaley is joined by Section F's Dr Eric Newsom and Michael Huie, along with special guest film historian Dr. Llewella Chapman, author of the British Film Institute's book on From Russia With Love. https://geni.us/4Ppp The team dives deep into the 1963 Bond classic, exploring everything from Red Grant's chilling villainy to Connery's evolving performance as 007, and why this film is often hailed as not just the best 007 movie but maybe the best spy movie ever made. The panel explores the film's darker, more espionage-driven tone compared to other James Bond entries and its legacy in the genre. Llewella brings rich insights from her research, offering fascinating production details and commentary on its visual and psychological depth. What did you think of From Russia With Love? It's a surprise BONUS episode! Over on my patreon for the last 2 years I've been doing a James Bond movie podcast called Still Bonding. All 25 Bond films have been covered and discussed in depth on there and I figured the best way to wrap the whole thing up was to do an "official" Bond movie ranking episode. Joining me to rank all 25 James Bond films are friends of the show Mel (birb.jamesbirb on Instagram) and Chris (britishbondaddict on Instagram). It took us nearly 4 hours to rank all of the films and this entire episode is not only out on Patreon like usual but also completely out in it's entirety for non-patrons! The author of A Different Kind of Brave describes his novel as a “gay teen love letter to James Bond movies”, which is a pretty accurate description! Lee Wind's book is a ludicrously exciting and romantic action adventure story with all of the Bond ingredients - but with two gay protagonists, one of who filters his whole life through his beloved Bond movies, which is definitely something many of us can relate to. For many readers - young adult or older - reading this novel will be an intensely validating experience. I devoured it in one sitting, propelled by the narrative and characters. What I did not expect to happen was to find myself at the end sobbing tears of queer joy. The day after reading A Different Kind of Brave, I chatted with Lee about his own history with Bond (the book is crammed with 007 detail!) and what motivates him to writes books which have the potential to change lives. One of my own motivations for chatting with Lee was to find out how we could get as many people as possible to get hold of a copy of A Different Kind of Brave. You can pickup the paperback from all online retailers. But Lee has also created a really Kickstarter for the hardback. For everyone who pledges for a gorgeous hardback edition of the book the publisher will give a paperback copy to queer youth! SPECTRE – can this James Bond movie be defended? Dan and Tom bring Vicky back to answer this question. While SPECTRE is not often in a James Bond fan's top 5 list, it is often in a Bond fan's bottom 10 list. Why is that? What about this movie turns fans off? Dan, Tom, and Vicky uncover both the positives and the negatives of SPECTRE to try to figure out if it can be defended. Let's Look At The Negatives They start with a look at some of the negatives of SPECTRE. Dan, Tom, and Vicky think one of the problems is the reason Blofeld hates James Bond. At least the reason Blofeld tells Bond. Dan says that this plot point irks him. Or maybe it is the character of Madeleine Swann. Vicky says she thinks the character is too flat. Or maybe it is the writing of Purvis and Wade. You know Tom will chime in on that one. And more. And Now The Positives To be sure, there are some positives in SPECTRE. Such as: The production quality is top-notch, a signature of Eon Productions' James Bond movies. The spectacular pre-title sequence. The supporting cast. And more. This is a lively discussion as the three of them aren't in agreement on all the positives and negatives. So, What Do You Think: SPECTRE – can this James Bond movie be defended? So, what are your reasons for liking or disliking SPECTRE? Can you defend it? Let us know your thoughts, ideas for future episodes, and what you thought of this episode. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME Filming Locations in Sardinia! Your covert field operatives Dan and Tom trace their exploits in visiting the filming locations in Sardinia, Italy from the James Bond Movie, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME. Many people love going to James Bond filming locations. Dan and Tom do as well. Many times, these locations are very cool. Sardinia, Italy is one such place – simply beautiful and a destination which made the trip that much more fun! Not everything went smoothly for them: Issues with their rental car, places that were closed for the season, and, hey, a balcony was missing – all made the trip that much more memorable. That said, they got to all the sites and only needed a 2-night stay to do that. For the most part, all the Jemes Bond filming locations are all fairly close to each other on Sardinia. The ferry dock in Palau is the farthest drive from the beaches and hotels from the movie and it is only about a 30-minute or so drive away. Everything else is closer together. So, get the whole story and tune in! The sites they talk about are: The hotel where James Bond and Agent XXX stay, using the pseudonym Mr. & Mrs. Sterling (in 2 bedrooms because Moneypenny was being overly efficient). This is also the place where they meet Naomi as she pulls up in the boat. The ferry dock where Q brings Bond the Lotus Espirit The church and village square where the motorcycle chase starts The pullout on the side of the road where Naomi pops up in the helicopter The pier where the Lotus plunges into the water The beach where the Lotus drives out of the water They give you some tips about the area and what to look for when hunting these sites. So, have a listen and you'll “Be in the Know” about traveling to James Bond filming locations in Sardinia, Italy! You can check out all of our podcast episodes on your favorite podcast app or our website. Our channel name is CRACKING THE CODE OF SPY MOVIES. Please send any comments about your visit to these sites or any other filming locations at info@spymovienavigator.com. We'll give you a shout-out on a future episode! Webpage: https://bit.ly/3tKrnpk
It's time for the further adventures of The Flickcast. The podcast about stuff nerds love. This week it's Episode 541: Never Grow Old. On the show this week Chris and Joe get busy with discussions about, as you may have guessed, some new and recurring topics. Some of these include the continuing SAG strike, Christopher Nolan's (rumored) James Bond movies, potential casting of said (potential) James Bond Movies, more on Ahsoka and the return of Loki to Disney+ for season 2 and quite a bit more. And yes, tangents have returned, so fear not. Picks this week include Chris' pick of the 1987 classic The Lost Boys (just in time for Halloween!) and Joe's pick of the recent Tom Cruise blockbuster Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning (part 1). That's a mouthful. Damn. Enjoy! If you like the show, please give it a rating or review on Apple Podcasts, or your app of choice. Every rating and review helps. And if you're really feeling it, consider becoming a Patron and supporting the show on Patreon. That would be super cool. Thanks for listening! In every Bond film there's a real-life historical event that goes with it. Donnie's podcast researches and presents the history that inspired the stories. Here, he sets out the best *and worst* of the James Bond franchise. One of the 007 films is absolutely (in his view) beyond redemption. Yet there are several others that are "perfect tens". We focus on the extreme ends of the enjoyment spectrum, and find a way of watching 2015's SPECTRE that makes it good for all of us.
