It's 1990s in New York; the East Coast was thriving with up-and-coming rappers, DJs, and hip-hop groups trying to make a name for themselves. One of these groups was A Tribe Called Quest. It features Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi White. They were school friends in the Queens suburb that would go on to create music that would set the standard of hip-hop and rap for generations to come. They were also part of a collective of other Afrocentric artists called Native Tongues that make up De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifa, and others that used their music to speak on important social issues, and set a certain aesthetic that highlighted their heritage. The eclectic sampling of Quest's music, the unique flows of Q-Tip and Phife Dawg, as well as blending soul with jazz in their songs made them stand out as a force to be reckoned with. Today, we look at their story and the critically acclaimed albums they made. A Tribe Called Quest is one of the most innovative, original, groundbreaking groups of all time, any genre. The group consisted of four members Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi White. Q-Tip is one of the greatest producer, emcees of all time. He is a genius. Phife Dawg is an emcees emcee, he didn't start with the biggest role in the group, but by the second album he was destroying the mic. Ali Shaheed Muhammad is still an all time producer even outside of the group. Jarobi was the least involved from the second album as he was going to culinary arts school. Come check out who this group helped get their start and how and why they are so influential still to this day. Please like, subscribe and leave a review where possible. Thank you and have a great day.

Jarobi White is in the studio for this week's The Main Course! Alexes McLaughlin and Phillip Gilmour welcome the rapper turned chef turned taco aficionado for a comprehensive chat. A New York native, Jarobi shares what he grew up eating and recalls his very first restaurant job, working his way up the restaurant hierarchy at age 14. By age 17 he recalls the story of how his musical prowess came about, meeting his group mates, and the struggle to get his music noticed by the masses. Once A Tribe Called Quest took off, Jarobi goes on to share how he always kept cooking in the forefront of his mind and how presently he's rocking Taco Tuesdays with A Tribe Called Quest themed food truck with some of the best DJs in the country, plus lots more. This program was brought to you by The International Culinary Center. “First time I got some money from music, I used my money to go to culinary school… I was serious about it. I only wanted to do music and cooking.” [17:00] “We started pairing the hottest DJs on the planet with delicious tacos!” [31:00] –Jarobi White on The Main Course
Ep. 160 - From A Tribe Called Quest to Chef, Jarobi White returns to the podcast for a second time. Since we talked to him last year he's started a new company (Eats, Rhymes, Life), was part of the Black Chef Series at BluJeen in Harlem, started a Tribe Taco Tuesday in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn, and was back in L.A. for Labor Day Weekend hosting a BBQ w/ Roy Choi at the Line Hotel in Koreatown. We talk about all that and Star Wars.
Can I kick it ? Q-Tip, Jarobi White, Phife Dawg, and Ali Shaheed say yes you can ! Tune in this week and get acquainted with my boys from ATCQ.
Ep. 122 - This week's podcast guest is Jarobi White, the mysterious original member of Tribe Called Quest who left the group to become a professional chef. A Tribe Called Quest is an American hip hop group, formed in 1985, and is composed of MC/producer Q-Tip, MC Phife Dawg aka Phife Diggy (Malik Taylor), and DJ/producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad. A fourth member, rapper Jarobi White, left the group after their first album but rejoined in 1991. Along with De La Soul, the group was a central part of the Native Tongues Posse, and enjoyed the most commercial success out of all the groups to emerge from that collective.
