We are thrilled to introduce you to Mr. Tyrone Geter, a world-renowned artist and teacher. With a Masters of Fine Arts from Ohio University, Geter's exceptional talent in painting and drawing has captivated audiences for decades. His portraits are masterfully executed, sensitive, and timeless. However, Geter's journey to becoming a world-class artist was not without its challenges. He grew up in Anniston, Alabama during a time when segregation laws and social justice were defining the region. In 1979, Geter relocated to Nigeria where he lived for seven years, painting and drawing among the locals of Northern Nigeria. This experience taught him to appreciate the richness and depth of the cultures of the region, despite the harsh realities of life. Geter's works have been displayed at several prestigious institutions such as the Columbia Museum of Art, Florence County Museum, and The Museum of Fine Art in Boston. Missy Willis invited Ann Hansen to be a guest on her podcast Let 'Em Go Barefoot - and since then, they have been close connected. In sync as they are. Together they have written the book 'Life Unschooled: Living & Learning without School.' We invited both of them to a talk.Imagine taking the responsibility for your child's life into your own hands, breaking away from the constraints of the traditional education system and nurturing their curiosity to cultivate a love for learning. That's the essence of unschooling and it's exactly what we explore in this episode with Ann Hansen and Missy Willis. We kick things off by delving deep into Ann and Missy's backgrounds in education and their personal journeys into unschooling. They bust the myth that one must be a teacher to homeschool, emphasizing instead the role of a curious and attuned parent. As we navigate through their experiences, we explore the power of self-directed education and how it fosters growth, curiosity, and a unique learning environment. Their insights into alternative education are truly enlightening, challenging people to reevaluate societal definitions of success and to trust in children's interests. We also discuss the challenges and triumphs of committing to an unschooling lifestyle. Ann and Missy share their wisdom on creating a community among homeschoolers, about the hardships of breaking free from conditioned thinking and about the necessity of taking responsibility for our children. We also get an inside look at their collaborative project, the Barefoot Playground guidebook, a practical tool they've developed to help families navigate the world of homeschooling. Towards the end, we delve into the complexities of parenting during the teenage years and the importance of a strong family bond that outlasts adolescence. Expect to have your perspectives challenged and your curiosity piqued in this deep dive into a whole new world of learning, fostering growth, and child empowerment. Remember, learning is not about filling a bucket, but lighting a fire. Let's ignite that fire with some unconventional wisdom on unschooling!

Hi friend, being a Black woman is hard. Black women deserve safe and soft spaces. Being a Black woman content creator, I've been getting questions asking why I create so much for Black women. I LOVE BLACK WOMEN. Black women are always being told that they aren't enough and I aim to remind them that they are enough. That they matter. That they are loved. In 1995, OutKast was booed by an angry crowd at the Source Awards after they won Best New Artist. During his speech, Andre 3000 famously declared "The South got something to say." Nowadays, ATL has a solid place in the history of rap, but OutKast had to fight for a seat at the table. OutKast becomes the newest member of the Triple Crown club here on Heat Rocks and we're talking to professor/scholar Regina Bradley about the duo's smothered, covered, diced, and topped LP, Aquemini. We discuss Andre's evolution as a rapper, the deep Atlanta love throughout the record, and where this album ranks in OutKast's discography. We finally did it! Nate from the Kings of Sport podcast came through to watch the Outkast musical, IDLEWILD starring Big Boi, Andre 3000, Terrence Howard, Macy Gray and more. We all have strong opinions about Outkast, so we get into our feelings pretty quick on this one. We struggle, but ultimately find a lot to love in this messy masterpiece. We also talk about Da Art of Storytellin' Part 4, and a B.O.B. song with a great Andre verse. It's a long episode, so if you just want to hear us talk about music, that starts at 1:05.
