Today I'm talking to Christine Colton, Senior Growth Executive with ONE Sotheby's International Realty. Before Sotheby's, she was an editor in advertising for Apple, then for the NFL documentaries, Queen Latifa and many more. Shortly after her success in documentaries, advertising, and editing, she obtained her real estate license, pivoted her career into luxury real estate and within a couple of years became a Senior VP with ONE Sotheby's, and she is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to her passion for and impact on the culture and growth of ONE Sotheby's.Today, on episode 303, Christine and I dive deep into the mindset, strategies, and personal philosophies that have propelled Christine to the top of her game as we talk about 'How to Turn No's into Yes's and Create Big Wins'.⚡️Powered by BreakthroughLuxury Coaching & Membership https://BreakthroughLuxury.com

The Joy of Cruising Podcast

This week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome Elizabeth Hill. Two queens, a convicted felon, and a schoolteacher board a cruise ship.... Sounds like the beginning of a bad joke. This is no joke, however; these four individuals are, respectively, the Queen of England, Queen Latifa, the iconic, and Snoops good friend, Martha Stewart, and my guest today Elizabeth Hill—all Godmothers of cruise ships. Cruise ship Godmothers perform the task of christening a new cruise ship, ceremonially naming the ship marked by the smashing of a bottle of champagne against the ship hull. Cruise ship “Godparents” are usually women, even animated ones like Tinkerbell who was named Godmother to Disney Cruise Line's Wonder—although rapper Pitbull was selected as Godfather of Norwegian Escape. The notion of a ship godmother had its origins hundreds of years ago where ceremonial launching of seagoing vessels took place in various forms, either celebratory or religious, depending on local custom, but generally to bestow the ship and crew with well-wishes and safe travels. Usually, celebrities are chosen as godmothers, such as Oprah, Helen Mirren, Dame Judi Dench, Whoopi, Reba McEntire, Jennifer Hudson, Mariah Carey, J-Lo and Simone Biles. And then there is Godmother Elizabeth, who you probably never heard of. I wrote about her story in The Joy of Cruising and called it a ‘Modern Day Fairy Tale.'The Joy of Cruising Again is now available! Coupon code is joyofcruisingpodcast.Support the show

All good things must come to an end, so it's also true with our month of comedic actors in dramatic roles. When good things come to an end, you have to go out with a bang, and we do! This week we watched Stranger Than Fiction the 2006 Will Farrell film that co-stars Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Queen Latifa, and Dustin Hoffman. In this film we meet Harold Crick (Farrell) a cardboard boxed personality of a man that works for the IRS who hears narration in his head one day and finds out he's going to die. If you haven't seen this film, you've got to. So, sit back, relax and listen to our thoughts on 2006's Stranger Than Fiction. And no, this title is not indicative of our current societal climate. It's just a coincidence.Support the show

It's 1990s in New York; the East Coast was thriving with up-and-coming rappers, DJs, and hip-hop groups trying to make a name for themselves. One of these groups was A Tribe Called Quest. It features Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi White. They were school friends in the Queens suburb that would go on to create music that would set the standard of hip-hop and rap for generations to come. They were also part of a collective of other Afrocentric artists called Native Tongues that make up De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifa, and others that used their music to speak on important social issues, and set a certain aesthetic that highlighted their heritage. The eclectic sampling of Quest's music, the unique flows of Q-Tip and Phife Dawg, as well as blending soul with jazz in their songs made them stand out as a force to be reckoned with. Today, we look at their story and the critically acclaimed albums they made. The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Philip Lassiter spent his early years in Mobile, Alabama. He was the son of a white pentecostal preacher. “They clapped on one and three in my father's church,” he says. Moving to Peoria, Illinois as a teenager was a revelation for him. As he tells it, “They beat the racist out of me in Peoria.” Lassiter's story, both musical and personal, is a bit hard to unravel. He somehow managed to pay dues in multiple scenes seemingly  at the same time. Philip's has been a hero's journey.  Blink once and you'll find him in the “Afrocentric” Dallas music scene running the band at a large church, mentoring a young Michael League during the inception of Snarky Puppy. Blink again, and you'll find him doing the New York hustle. Turn around and he's still there, this time living in Nashville. But what's this? Then he's an LA cat, writing arrangements for gospel and r&b records. Wait! Now he's an expat, living in Holland and raising a family with his Dutch Caribbean wife (the talented singer Josje). Phil is a trumpet player, arranger, band leader, teacher, songwriter, cat. His first major recording opportunities were on gospel records, and he has done arrangements for dozens of major praise and worship albums and artists. Eventually that work led him to do arrangements for pop, r&b and soul artists as well. His sound is identifiable, punchy, funky, funny, narrative, empathetic - in fact, you've probably heard his sound so often that you take it for granted. It's that sound;  the sound of a horn section hooking up a record, elevating a production, bringing the project to life in such a natural way that you almost can't imagine the song without it.  Philip wrote for and toured with Prince as his trumpet player and section leader, and he has worked with a full roster of other top notch musicians as well. Most notably Ariana Grande, Chris Cornell, Kirk Franklin, Timbaland, Roberta Flack, Jill Scott, Kelly Rowland, Fantasia, Anderson. Paak, Yelawolf, Queen Latifa, Al Jarreau, Fred Hammond, The Isley Brothers and Ledisi.  Why does he get called so much? “People ask me how did you get this gig or that gig. I always tell them, ‘I didn't get the gig. The gig got me.'” Lassiter recently released his fifth solo album, Live In Love, a collection of nasty grooves and thoughtful messages, a love letter to his former life in Los Angeles, a manifestation for a better America, and a gathering of collaborators from around the world.

Philip Lassiter is an 11-time Grammy award winning horn/string arranger, and former section leader/arranger of Prince and the New Power Generation.  Currently based in  L.A., Philip has quickly garnered respect as the go to arranger and trumpet player for iconic artists such as:  Prince, Kirk Franklin, Ariana Grande,  Timbaland, Roberta Flack, Jill Scott, Rodney Darkchild Jerkins, Hamilton w/ Barack Obama, Cece Winans, Kelly Rowland, Fantasia, Anderson Paak, Yelawolf, Queen Latifa, Al Jarreau, Fred Hammond, The Isley Brothers and more. At age 6, he unwittingly met his first love – the piano – and began belting out Amazing Grace like no other kid in Mobile, Alabama. Being the son of a preacher – a man “who sweated every ounce until he was red in the face” – Philip learned how to captivate an audience and he's taken that spirit on his own unique mission ever since.  A stint in St Louis brought the beauty of big band noise and an ear for improvisation. College in Florida harnessed his gift on the trumpet, provided inroads into Salsa and Merengue, and refined his natural ability as a Jazz Pianist.  Eight years in Dallas under the wing of some of the most talented musicians and producers in the world. Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, Bernard Wright, Bobby Sparks, Snarky Puppy, Erykah Badu, and many others further expanded his notoriety in the gospel and funk industry.  Several more years in Nashville further diversified Lassiter's musical portfolio. While there, he worked with the legendary producer Tommy Sims and performed in numerous awards shows such as the Dove Awards and The Stellars.  Learn more about Philip Lassiter at www.philthyfunk.com. Music and martial arts lead him to acupuncture school where he’s now coming down the home stretch of his education.  Both acupuncture and music require a flexible mind and heart that are rooted in solid fundamentals. It’s not surprising that we often use the metaphor of playing jazz when doing an acupuncture treatment. Both require the ability to be present, attuned and effortlessly flexible from moment to moment.  Listen in to this conversation on how we take everything with us as we move into new phases of life and putting our heart into our work is an essential ingredient to living a life with meaning and creativity.  Head on over to the show notes page for more information about this episode and for links to the resources discussed in the interview.

This week on Episode 476 of Priority One --- We ‘Trek Out' Terrestrial Trek, Chris Pine's pining, Takei's Rapier wit, why James MacKinnon loves Bananas, and Bob Picardo's newest role. In Gaming news, Star Trek: Timelines launches Wolves and Wraiths! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Question Is: CQ: Will you be watching “Star Trek: Discovery” on CBS? Is this your first time viewing the series? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Discovery to Air on Terrestrial Television Back in 1998, a year before the introduction of TiVo, NBC ran a Summer campaign promoting their re-runs of popular television programming. The slogan - “If you haven't seen it, it's new to you” - seems as relevant now as it was in the VHS-recording nightmare times of 1998. Why, you ask? Because if you held out on watching “Star Trek: Discovery” due to CBS ALL ACCESS subscription costs, then you'll have new-to-you Star Trek very very soon! On Wednesday August 26th, CBS released its revised fall line-up. The original CBS schedule featured fan-favorites including NCIS and Young Sheldon as well as newcomers like Chuck Lorre's “B Positive” and Queen Latifa's “The Equalizer” Reboot. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, CBS pivoted towards reality TV and previously non-broadcast programming to fill the gaps. One of those non-broadcast programs is, as we implied already, “Star Trek: Discovery”'s first season! CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl said of the revised line-up “This is hardly a traditional fall season, but we are prepared with a strong slate of original content while our regular scripted series begin production. Based on our current timeline, we hope to start rolling out our previously announced fall series as they become available in November.” So when will you be able to catch Discovery over-the-air? Starting Thursday September 17th, Discovery will air from 10PM to 11PM, following the popular “Big Brother” and “Love Island”. Chris Pine Is (WAS) Still Interested in a Star Trek IV Star Trek legend and Twitter connoisseur William Shatner has a history of changing his mind. He wants to play Kirk, Kirk's story is already told. He loves his co-stars, he has problems with his co-stars. He wants to go to space...he still wants to go to space - okay that last one was a bad example, but you see where we're going. But what about the other actor who's played Starfleet's youngest Captain. What about Chris Pine? We ask because this week, August 27th, the new podcast “Things are Going Great For Me With Claude Deering” launched an interview with A-lister Chris Pine. During the interview, the 40 year-old actor discussed his newest film - “Wonder Woman 1984” - partying with his mom, and of course, Star Trek. If you're a fan of Kelvin Trek, what he had to say was heartening. Pine told Deering "I haven't heard anything. I mean, I get asked these questions all the time. I'm like the last person to find anything out. So, I've heard -- what have I heard? Tarantino is going to do one. And then, who is it? Noah Hawley was going to do something else, and then that fell through. And then he's going to do something with the Discovery, the new Alex Kurtzman-led cast. So, I really don't know. I know that Paramount is coming out of having restructured a bit and kind of a major corporate restructuring. So hopefully, when all that dust settles, something concrete will come out of it, and we'll get to work. I'd love to do it." If you're a Kelvin fan, great news - right? Well, that brings us back to Pine's convictions. Be sure to follow the link in our show notes to listen to the full episode of “Things are Going Great For Me”! George Takei Talks To StarTrek.com Another social-media guru straight   outta    Connie had some interesting things to say about his time on Star Trek, and whether or not he'd be interested in a return - though we shouldn't call it a comeback - he's been here for years. George Takei, Star Trek's own Hikaru Sulu, sat down with StarTrek.com and discussed his favorite episode of Star Trek's Original series. Takei cited “The Naked Time”, saying ”I loved being unchained from that damn console. Episode after episode, there I am. They may have given me promotions, from the Lieutenant, to becoming the Lieutenant Commander, and then Commander, but I'm still there at that same console, saying “Aye. aye, sir, warp three!” Well, at least in that episode, I showed them that I had a life beyond just “Aye. aye, sir, warp three!” I can fence.” Takei also revealed some on-set drama regarding that episode, telling Bex April May ”Well, the fencing was an important scene, and I didn't know how to fence, either. I had to take formal fencing lessons a couple of weeks before we were to shoot that.[...] Jimmy Doohan, who played Scotty, was a very perceptive person. He heard the sound of my stamping and panting, and huffing and puffing, and walked all the way from the opposite end of the soundstage [...] Just as I'm lunging, he appears behind the flat, and I miss him, literally by inches, from his nose. He was shocked and startled, and went rushing back to the set, complaining to the Assistant Director, “George just assaulted me with his fencing foil!” For more of the interview with the ever-entertaining George Takei, including what he thought Star Trek VI should have been called and whether or not he would return as Sulu, trek out the link in our show notes! James Mackinnon on Creating - And Being - Picard's Borg This week, Star Trek's  “For Your Consideration” interviews continued. This time SYFY Wire spoke with a behind-the-scenes star - Dept head Prosthetics and Special Makeup Effects James MacKinnon. And as it turns out, MacKinnon is in front of the camera as well! The five-time Emmy winner - and this year's nominee for his role as Makeup director on “Star Trek: Picard” - talked about his secret weapon - and it's bananas  ”Yes. [Laughs] Bananas are my go-to for inside flesh. Whenever you slice somebody open, there's fatty tissue and other layers of stuff. If you sculpt as deep as possible, and add a little bit of banana, little chunks of banana, with a little bit of [fake] blood, it makes it look like fatty tissue…. So I always have a banana in the trailer every day, just in case you need a little bit of meaty tissue...” Mackinnon also talked about his time in front of the camera, and how it affects interactions with the fans ”My assistants Richard [Redlefsen] and Alexei [Dmitriew] slipped me in during lunch, because we didn't want production to wait. Our lunch break is 45 minutes, and this makeup usually takes an hour and a half, but we pounded through! I'm a very TNG-looking Borg, so it's a bit of a throwback….” Bob Picardo Joins “To Meet the Faces You Meet” Finally this week, we'd like to mention that former Star Trek Doctor and all-around-great-science-ambassador Robert Picardo has landed a new role on the Kickstarter film "To Meet the Faces You Meet". From the "To Meet the Faces You Meet" kickstarter page, the synopsis states  The military thought they had created the ultimate weapon-a soldier (Friz) linked symbiotically with an artificially intelligent spaceship (MEAD: Mobile Extrasensory Autonomous Deceptor) with the ability to project illusions so real that they cannot be distinguished from reality. Together, Friz and MEAD became the most deadly fighting force the world had seen. There was one problem: An errant bit of programming instilled MEAD with a conscience and pacifist tendencies that made him and his human symbiote useless for military purposes. Scheduled for "decommission," Friz and MEAD go on the run, pursued by bounty hunters and an admiral with a personal axe to grind. Picardo will play ADMIRAL GILLETTE, the antagonist of the film. Other stars include Patton Oswalt and PATRICK WARBURTON. We'll have a link to the kickstarter in our show notes! Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds George Brinson This week we are joined by George Brinson: A veteran, Information Technology Manager, and Star Trek Online player. Mr.Brinson talks with the team about how Star Trek Online has influenced him; and a troubling interaction with Cryptic support. Star Trek Timelines: Wolves and Wraiths From September 3rd through 7th, Star Trek Timelines players will conclude their human-Romulan history studies in the “Restoration” Hybrid Galaxy/Skirmish Event, the last chapter in the Capitoline Wolf Mega-Event. The ranked reward is sure to satisfy any player's vaulting ambitions: Her most Imperial Majesty, and returning 5-star crew member, Emperor Georgiou. The new 5-star RomuLannister sister Narissa heads the event crew, along with 5-star Captain Erika Hernandez, and returning 4-star Rura Penthe Reed doing his best Patrick Bateman deep cut. Timelines also begins its Haunted Heroines campaign on September 3rd, featuring 5-star Pah-wraith Keiko and 4-star Tieran Possessed Kes. Disruptor Beam has yet to release details about the four-week event's narrative. However it's safe to say the current theme of confronting one's past isn't going away soon. Star Trek Fleet Command: Scopely Names a New Chief Business Officer Scopely, the developer behind Star Trek Fleet Command, purchased FoxNext Games back in January, and that acquisition has led to a new announcement. As reported on website GameDaily.biz, Scopely have named former FoxNext president Aaron Loeb as their new Chief Business Officer. Describing his position, Loeb said his responsibility is driving Scopely's core business of game services. Speaking to GameDaily, he said,  Somehow, rooted in our industry's history, we came to a belief that ‘fun' is the opposite of ‘business' … My experiences have taught me to recognize that when done right, ‘fun' and ‘business' are a near total overlap.  Loeb praises Scopely's fearless approach to creative game development.  He goes so far as singling out Star Trek Fleet Command, saying  It's a game that was given the time and support it needed to achieve the greatness that the team knew was within their grasp. And today, it's one of the most (if not the most) deeply engaging games on mobile.

This week on Episode 476 of Priority One --- We ‘Trek Out’ Terrestrial Trek, Chris Pine’s pining, Takei’s Rapier wit, why James MacKinnon loves Bananas, and Bob Picardo’s newest role. In Gaming news, Star Trek: Timelines launches Wolves and Wraiths! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! The slogan - “If you haven’t seen it, it’s new to you” - seems as relevant now as it was in the VHS-recording nightmare times of 1998. Why, you ask? Because if you held out on watching “Star Trek: Discovery” due to CBS ALL ACCESS subscription costs, then you’ll have new-to-you Star Trek very very soon! On Wednesday August 26th, CBS released its revised fall line-up. The original CBS schedule featured fan-favorites including NCIS and Young Sheldon as well as newcomers like Chuck Lorre’s “B Positive” and Queen Latifa’s “The Equalizer” Reboot. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, CBS pivoted towards reality TV and previously non-broadcast programming to fill the gaps. One of those non-broadcast programs is, as we implied already, “Star Trek: Discovery”’s first season! He wants to play Kirk, Kirk’s story is already told. He loves his co-stars, he has problems with his co-stars. He wants to go to space...he still wants to go to space - okay that last one was a bad example, but you see where we’re going. But what about the other actor who’s played Starfleet’s youngest Captain. If you’re a fan of Kelvin Trek, what he had to say was heartening. I'd love to do it." If you’re a Kelvin fan, great news - right? Well, that brings us back to Pine’s convictions. Wikipedia does a nice job defining, "Misogynoir," so I will borrow it here. "Misogynoir is misogyny directed towards black women where race and gender both play roles in bias. The term was coined by queer black feminist Moya Bailey, who created the term to address misogyny directed toward black women in American visual and popular culture. Trudy of Gradient Lair, a womanist blog about black women and art, media, social media, socio-politics and culture, has also been credited in developing the lexical definition of the term. The concept is grounded in the theory of intersectionality, which analyzes how various social identities such as race, gender, class, and sexual orientation interrelate in systems of oppression." Today, we talk about misogynoir from the perspective of a cis white het man's desire to learn and share.  Additionally, there is music.  Always music. The soundtrack includes Big Freedia, Missy Elliott, Queen Latifa, Leikeli47, Maimouna Youssef, and Jamila Woods. I love all of the Black women who have loved and supported me throughout my life, starting with my step-Mom, Angie, and continuing through the myriad colleagues, friends, and educators with whom I currently work and interact. Love yinz. G

Happy Valentine's Day Baddies! We hope you have a special night planned for that special someone in your life, and we also hope it involves listening to Christian & Alejandro discuss a Gary Marshall Classic (a GMC if you will). Valentine's Day (2010) stars (in no particular order) Jessica Alba, Kathy Bates, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, Eric Dane, Patrick Dempsey, Hector Elizondo, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Topher Grace, Anne Hathaway, Carter Jenkins, Ashton Kutcher, Queen Latifa, Taylor Launter, Shirley McClain, George Lopez, and Taylor Swift. The Boys can agree on one thing for sure, and that's the fact that, of Gary Marshall's holiday three pack, this one hits a home run. Full of plot twist and turns, Alejandro and Christian can barely contain themselves talking about this rom-com that has more set up and payoffs than the Avengers franchise. Christian reveals that as a kid he was forced to look at Richard Gere's ass, then Alejandro is forced to listen to Christian's plans on seducing an older generation of women, "GILFS" as some calls them. But lets not forget what this holiday is all about... a saint who refused to listen to the Emperor of Rome and was killed for the sinister act of marrying people who were in love.

This week I continue my conversation with hit producer, composer and music supervisor Doug DeAngelis. In part 2 of our interview we focus on working as a music director and supervisor for award shows such as The Billboard Music Awards and Teen Choice Awards. We also talk about what it takes to be a music supervisor for t.v. shows, the relationship a supervisor should have with an artist as well as the importance of knowing the music editor for a series. Plus, practical steps you can take to get into this line of work in the music industry.Show Notes:Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. Talking Points:*I do music supervision and music direction at the same time for award shows.*How did you get into working on award shows? I did talent performance shows and along the way I got called to work on a sci-fi award show for Spike T.V. then she started calling me to do Teen Choice Awards and shows like that and people get to know you and start calling you for others.*It takes about 2 months to put an award show.*A “Dub Stage” is where you mix a t.v. show.*Don Mischer Productions does award shows.*I am either editing library music or writing music for the award shows.*Label and management decide what music they want played when their artists come on stage for award shows and I have to work with them to put that together.*Award shows are giant marketing events for artists, films, shows, etc.*When actors or models come on stage to be presenters, I have to figure out what their brand is and create music that fits who they are. Then their managers have to approve it most of the time.*The stress in award shows comes when they don’t tell you who the artists or presenters are until about a week before the show. So you’re doing stuff blind and chasing a lot of rumors and sometimes do work for no reason.*You’re going to do a lot of work for nothing, but that’s part of the job.*I do pop culture award shows, not academy awards, etc.*You only get about 48 hours to turn a song for t.v. shows.*I rarely have time as a music supervisor to reach out and ask licensing agents for songs to put in a show. I have reached out directly to artists and had them send me music that I needed right at that moment.*A music supervisor’s sentiment for putting an artist’s music in a show should be “thank you,” not “you’re welcome, I just got you exposure on social media.” That is devaluing you as an artist.*We have devalued music for the past 25 years.*Music supervisors should appreciate the artists and thank them for making the show successful.*Music supervisors should always be respectful of the musician’s art making their show better.*I would love to see the business of music stop accepting less all the time and try to be innovative and get back to more with innovation.*I moved to Nashville with the goal of saying “how can we break the mold entirely and start over again with a new model that will actually generate real revenue for artists and not just take whatever we’ve left them by giving away things all the time."*I have a company called Black Sleeve Media to create a new medium for music that can be experiential like the video gaming world where people will find value in and spend money on.*We’ve built technology for mobile devices that can play back multiple multi-tracks all at one time to gamify the experience of music and tie it all to different social experiences and communication experiences and festivals, and tie to brands, etc. and make it so you’re actually participating in music. It’s all virtual currency based so you’re not buying music but unlocking features and things they can do with music that will pay the artist the same way that the sale of CD would pay.*It’s mostly on mobile platforms working with artists and festivals to connect with the users.*Advice for getting into this world?*Do a lot of different things. They all have their own life and they all tie together so be free in not saying I only do one thing.*Someone taught me a technical skill to match my mental skill so I could express myself.*If you want to get into music supervision, there is a tremendous amount of value in technical skills. In being able to present your ideas to directors and producers they you hear them in your mind.*Learn how to edit music. Learn how to marry that music to Quicktime so you can take a show and put the scenes and music together edited the way you want.*The difference between being able to present yourself and your creative ideas as a music supervisor to picture, edited the way you hear them so it’s artistically doing what you’re hearing in your head, compared to just telling people your a music supervisor is huge.*Show them you have a clever, creative style.*You can’t show style without being able to present yourself.*Music supervision is a very hard world to get into now.*Learn how to program and do everything. It’s a job.*You don’t have to do it all at once, just get on the path. It’s a long journey.*It’s your presentation.*How do you approach a production company to show them a demo reel so you can become a music supervisor or composer?*You can get an agent like CAA or First Artist Management. There are multiple talent agents you can look up.*If you can show them something, they’ll watch it. You are competing against a bunch of people who have nothing to show for themselves.*Make something to show for yourself.*You don’t have to be signed with an agent to be a music supervisor, but it sure helps.*What is a talent agent going to do for you? If you’re new, they will connect you with indie films and small projects that nobody on the roster wants to do because it pays a smaller amount. They can offer that to you and if you follow through with it and do it well it will lead to bigger things, but you will only get the job is you SHOW them you can do the job, not tell them you can do the job.*Telling people you can do this job doesn’t help you. Showing them you can do this job helps you.*You can research “music supervision agency” or “composer agency.”*Music editors are critical because they are the pass-through in between the composer and the music supervisor and the show.*Music editors are critical people to get to know and send music to and work with.*Music editors are your first line people to get music to as an independent artist because they have to add temp music to picture. Give them music and ask them just to temp with it. It will most likely get replaced but it means that your music is getting shown to directors and you might be able to get a copy back and use it as a demo reel.*You’re just trying to show people what you can do to start and it will come from there.*Nobody is getting music in front of directors and producers more than a music editor with their own music because they have the knife and a picture with no music that needs temp music.*The music editor is the one who shapes the sound of t.v. show pilot more than anyone.*Music editing companies hire music editors. They don’t need an agent.*This is all one big job. Learn how to dive in and edit your music.*Pick 10 different shows and try the same song in all different environments and you’ll find out where it works best. That will teach you a lot about your music.*Comedy is the hardest to thing to put music to. If you can do that well you can jump to the front of the line because it is a very niche thing in Hollywood.*Don’t try to be something. Be you and try you in a lot of different things.*Learn what you’re good at by applying it to all different things.*Doug’s websiteDoug DeAngelis is a composer/producer/musical director and music supervisor. In part 1 of our conversation Doug and I discuss his time producing the biggest names in pop music, being a composer for hit television shows and what it takes to be a music director for live t.v.Show Notes:Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. Talking Points:*I programmed analog synthesizers in the early days before MIDI and went to Berklee College of Music to study music synthesis.*I saw music in colors and textures and layers.*Enthusiasm is the single best ingredient in professional musicianship. Nothing beats enthusiasm.*I started working at Syncro Sound studios owned by The Cars.*It had one of the first MIDI rooms in the country and I worked programming.*My first big project to work on was the debut album of Nine Inch Nails.*Then went on tour with the band Inner City, one of the first pop/house (Detroit Techno/Club) music bands.*Doug is a pioneer in Dance/Club music.*Moved to New York to work for David Franken McMurphy and that was my start with working on all the big artists in pop music.*When re-mixing an album, the record label picks the DJ and the DJ picks the producer to do the re-mix.*Moved to L.A. to work on more records and ended up working in T.V. by accident. I got a call to be the music director for a live talent show called Next Big Star with Ed McMahon, a precursor to American Idol. I ended up becoming the music supervisor as well not knowing what that even meant.*What does “clearing a song” mean for use on t.v. and film? It means identifying who the rights holders are for both the physical recording (the master) and the copyright (the publishing). Learning what cost is for all the different types of usages in t.v. or film. Learning how to do the paperwork and going out and getting the rights to license the songs to be used and have them signed off on before the show airs.*Don’t say no to an opportunity. Say yes! Figure it out and do it.*If you don’t take the opportunity when it comes your way, there are hundreds people waiting to take it from you.*You have to be more enthusiastic than ALL the people you’re working with. More than your bosses, the contestants, the artists your producing music for, the songwriters you’re cutting demos for. That’s what people need. That’s the job.*When you are making music for t.v. where you are on the clock, sometimes you are working for hours on a song and find out you can’t clear the rights to use it and you have to scrap it and start over knowing you have a lot more songs still do. Even then you have to stay enthusiastic. That’s the job.*Don’t leave a project until you know you have made your client happy based off what you know you are capable of accomplishing.*If you don’t impose your talent level on the client, you’re not finished yet. That’s enthusiasm.*Elevate everyone around you.*People who are great take everybody with them.*If you want to work professionally as a musician, producer, songwriter, composer, music supervisor, etc. , make “that’s great” the base line for what you do and go beyond that until the client says “that’s the greatest thing I’ve ever heard.”*Big things are easy to get right. It’s the little things that matter.*How did you transition from Music Directing on live t.v. shows and music supervising to be a composer for t.v. shows?*After multiple t.v. talent shows I produced a record for the group Love and Rockets and the singer and I started making music together that landed on some projects. We signed with CAA talent agency and pitched our reel to producer Michael Mann and landed the job scoring Robbery Homicide. That was my first job scoring a t.v. show.*Why sign with an agency like CAA? my partner Kevin already had a connection with them because of his band Love and Rockets and we had an advantage of getting our music heard.*When a new show is coming out, the studios will go to the big agents and say so and so has a new show and he is looking for a certain kind of music. Then everybody sends in their reels and the producer picks what they like.*t.v producers and music supervisors, etc. go to licensing agencies and talent agencies for music and composers because they can vet you and your work to make sure your music is good and you can handle the pressure of the schedule, the pace, etc. which is very taxing.*Scoring a drama is a 6 or 7 day turnaround which means 3 or 4 days to write the score because you have to have time for the producers and directors to hear it and make notes, then you revise the score and have it to stage the day before they mix the show.*All of that is for about 35 minutes of score in an 60 minute show.*What does a 24 hour day look like when you are scoring a show?*Realistically you work 18-19 hours a day and sleep 5-6 hours.* “Spot the episode” - meaning the composer, music supervisor, editor, director and the sound effects group meet together to watch a cut of the episode and you walk through it beat by beat, top to bottom of the showing making notes of what should be score, where there should be a song, where they want only sound design, end score, etc.*Then you have to remember what you talked about and create score and songs around that because there are no sound effects, etc. actually there yet.*When you’re scoring, understand that the better the film, the better your experience getting started at scoring is going to be.*It’s very hard to score to picture that is not good. Film, dialogue, story, cinematography, etc. make everything roll easier.*Music is all about you. When you’re scoring music for picture, it’s not about you anymore.*You always have to keep in mind that the episode started as a script about a year and a half ago going through a bunch or re-writes and back and forth with the studio getting rejections. Then they shot it and re-shot it because the acting wasn’t great, etc.*By the time it gets to you, It is what they want. So you have to be aware of that and score music that is subservient to the dialogue and the story that’s being told and it has to move with it.*The real job of a composer is to make each emotional turn and twist moment by moment with the dialogue and to tell the stories that the director is having a hard time telling.*You have to guide the audience to things that are important and away from things that are important with a score.*You’re also fixing things that aren’t working in the picture. Bad acting, a script that someone is unhappy with, or even subtle things like a beat is too long, etc.*You’re also fixing things as a music supervisor. The job is not just to polish something that was already great.*A lot of times a scene is over done and you need to downplay with the score.*You learn the banter between the executive producers and what they like and dislike so you can know how to fix problems in a scene with a score.*Comedy is the hardest genre to put music to.*The craft of a sitcom is to move from one scene that has a joke to a new scene in 3-5 seconds with a girl crying and getting from a chord that feels great with the joke to a heartbreak in two chords and it not feel horrible.*Every genre is a different craft. Check out Doug's website Doug DeAngelis is a composer/producer/musical director and music supervisor.
